I BOUGHT MY 2002 EXPLORER WITH 80,000 MILES ON IT FROM A RESPECTED LOCAL FORD DEALER. 20,000 MILES LATER, MY O/D LIGHT WON'T GO OFF AND MY GEARS WON'T ENGAGE PROPERLY. THIS HAPPENS FOR 2 DAYS BEFORE I SPUTTER INTO A DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE. I'M NOW BEING TOLD THAT I NEED TO REPLACE THE WHOLE TRANSMISSION AT A COST OF $2,500. THE KELLEY BLUE BOOK TRADE-IN VALUE IS ONLY $2,100 AND I STILL OWE $4,000! I FEEL DUPED AND SCAMMED BY FORD: A COMPANY MY FATHER HAS WORKED FOR 34 YEARS. FORD INSISTS THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT THIS COST. MY QUESTION IS: WHY HASN'T THERE BEEN A RECALL WHEN I'VE FOUND HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS FILED ABOUT THE VERY SAME PROBLEM I'M HAVING? CHECK TRANSMISSION MESSAGED APPEARED AND OD OFF LIGHT STARTED BLINKING. *TR
PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY AHEAD OF MY WIFE'S CAR. STARTED THE FORD EXPLORER AND PUT IT IN REVERSE, NOTHING HAPPENED, IT DID NOT ENGAGE. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT ENGAGED AND LEAPED BACKWARDS INTO MY WIFE'S CAR. SINCE THIS IT HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL MORE TIMES. I HOPE THAT A PERSON ISN'T STANDING BEHIND ME WHEN IT HAPPENS. *TR
MY FORD EXPLORER TRANSMISSION STARTED SLIPPING, IT IS STARTING TO FAIL. IT SEEM THAT THIS IS A BIG PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES, THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL. THERE HAVE BEEN RECALLS FOR LESS. *TR
THE OVERDRIVE LIGHT WAS BLINKING, AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. AFTER HAVING THE CAR SCANNED BY A MECHANIC, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE PC SOLENOID IN THE TRANNY WAS OUT. WE BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER IT WAS PURCHASED AT, AND THEY PERFORMED THE SAME TEST AND FIXED IT AT A COST OF $1058.18. A WEEK LATER IT IS SHIFTING HARD. PLUS AFTER USING THE 4WHEEL DRIVE ONLY TWICE, IT WOULD NOT GO INTO 4 WHEEL DRIVE. WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY TOLD ME THE 4X4 MODULAR HAD FAILED THIS AFTER A 140.50 CHECK, AND THEY WANTED 600.00 TO FIX, THIS WHILE PUTTING BRAKES ON IT. AND WHEN I ASKED WHAT WOULD CAUSE IT GO OUT, THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME " HOW WOULD I KNOW?" *TR
MY WIFE WAS IN THE LEFT LANE OF A BUSY HWY AND THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT. THERE WAS NO SHOULDER TO SAFELY PULL OFF ON. I OWN A 2002 FORD EXPLORER, THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS FOR THE EXACT SAME FAILURE. HOW CAN FORD NOT RECALL THIS PROBLEM? MY WIFE WAS LUCKY THAT SHE WAS NOT SERIOUSLY HURT. CAR HAD NO ACCIDENTS OR UNUSUAL USAGE. I HAD BOTH CITY AND HIGHWAY DRIVING WITH PREDOMINANTLY CITY DRIVING, NO HAULING HEAVY LOADS OR OFF ROAD DRIVING. THE SHIFT LEVER BROKE OFF AND THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN HAD TO BE REPLACED, CAR COULD NOT BE STARTED, GEARS ENGAGED OR MOVED AND HAD TO BE TOWED. THIS EVENT OCCURRED DURING HURRICANE EVACUATION AS WELL. AFTER RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET THERE SEEMS TO BE A LARGE NUMBER OF THE SAME (SIMILAR)COMPLAINT. DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 60MPH - CAR BEGAN TO SHIFT RANDOMLY AND THAN WOULD NOT SHIFT AT ALL (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) - HAD TO COAST ACROSS SEVERAL LANES OF TRAFFIC AND TRY TO PULL OUT OF DANGER. TRANSMISSION WAS REPLACED FOR THE COST OF 3,400.00. *TR
I HAVE A 2002 FORD EXPLORER LIMITED THAT HAD AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT 51,000 MILES. THE TRANSMISSION IS SEALED AND DOES NOT HAVE A DIPSTICK TO CHECK FLUID LEVELS, THEREFORE MAKING IT NON-SERVICEABLE BY THE OWNER. THIS TRANSMISSION APPEARS TO HAVE AN INHERENT DESIGN FLAW RESULTING IN PREMATURE FAILURE. THE CHECK TRANSMISSION LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASH AND THE TRANSMISSION STARTED SLIPPING WHEN ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE GEARS WHILE DRIVING. THIS CREATED A HAZARDOUS CONDITION BECAUSE THE TRANSMISSION WOULD SLIP OUT OF GEAR WHILE DRIVING CAUSING THE ENGINE TO REV EXTREMELY HIGH. I AM VERY CONCERNED AT ALL OF THE TRANSMISSIONS COMPLAINTS THAT THE NHTSA HAS HAD ON THE FORD 2002 EXPLORER AND NOTHING IS BEING DONE ABOUT THIS. PURCHASED A 2002 FORD EXP EDDIE BAUER ED USED WITH 35,000 MILES. TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE REPAIRED WITHIN 3 WEEKS DUE TO 4WD MALFUNCTION COVERED BY WARRANTY. PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW MOTOR ASSEMBLY HAS BEEN REPLACED ONCE, AND WINDOW REGULATOR HAS BEEN REPLACED ONCE, AND IS IN NEED OF A SECOND REPLACEMENT. TOOK TO LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD WINDOW WAS NOT MEANT TO BE LOWERED HALFWAY. THE REAR HATCH HAS ALSO CRACKED COMPLETELY DOWN FROM WINDOW TO LOWER PANEL. DEALERSHIP WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE ISSUES WITH THIS OCCURRING, BUT UPON FURTHER RESEARCH HAVE FOUND THIS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE MAKE AND MODEL. OVERDRIVE LIGHT BLINKS CONTINUOUSLY AND DEALERSHIP REPORTS IT TO BE A MALFUNCTIONING ELECTRICAL SWITCH REPAIR COST AT AROUND $400. HAVE CONTINUED TO DRIVE VEHICLE, BUT WILL NO LONGER DRIVE VEHICLE AFTER DISCOVERING THAT THIS IS A PRECURSOR TO TRANSMISSION FAILURE. MAY POSSIBLY TRADE-IN THIS VEHICLE...

THE VEHICLE STALLS AND LOSES POWER BEFORE 30 MPH, BUT AFTERWARDS THE VEHICLE FUNCTIONS PROPERLY. THE CONTACT NOTIFIED THE DEALER ABOUT THE FAILURE AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A TRANSMISSION SHOP FOR REPAIR. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE THIRD GEAR BAND IN THE TRANSMISSION FAILED; THEREFORE, A NEW TRANSMISSION WAS NEEDED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT YET BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 58,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 63,000.

AT ABOUT 55K MILES IT WAS SO BAD THAT WE HAD TO HAVE THE ENTIRE DIFFERENTIAL REBUILT AT A COST OF OVER $1,000. AT 65K MILES THE ENGINE HAD BEGUN TO MAKE NOISE AND IT BECAME MUCH LOUDER RAPIDLY. THE ENTIRE CAM DRIVE (TIMING CHAIN, SPROCKETS, TENSIONERS) HAD BEEN GROUND UP. THE TENSIONER PADS HAD 3/8" DEEP GROOVES WORN INTO THEM AND THERE WERE METAL SHAVINGS EVERYWHERE. THE BILL THIS TIME WAS ALMOST $1,300. IT IS INTERESTING THAT ALL THE PARTS THAT WERE REPLACED WERE A DIFFERENT DESIGN THAN THE ORIGINALS. IF THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE ORIGINAL DESIGN, WHY SPEND THE MONEY TO CHANGE THEM? OF COURSE FORD WOULD NOT ADMIT THAT THEY HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE TIMING CHAIN FOR THE CAMS. AFTER...

WE PICKED IT UP A WEEK LATER DRIVING 4 HOURS ON BUSY THROUGH WAYS AND HIGHWAYS, WHEN THE TRANSMISSION LIGHTS, AS NOTED ABOVE, STARTED BLINKING. ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO, WE HAD THE WHEEL BEARINGS REPLACED AS WELL AS OTHER REPAIRS. HOWEVER, THE TRANSMISSION FAILURE...
WHEN ATTEMPTING TO SHIFT FROM DRIVE TO PARK, THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER BROKE FROM THE STEERING COLUMN, MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO CHANGE GEARS. THE ENGINE REMAINED RUNNING WITH IT IN DRIVE. I TURNED THE IGNITION OFF & IT COULD NOT BE RESTARTED (IE, IGNITION/INTERLOCK SYSTEM). THE STEERING WHEEL WOULDN'T TURN EITHER. TRANSMISSION IN 2002 FORD EXPLORER FAILED W/O WARNING. DIRECTLY (3 DAYS) AFTER GETTING IT BACK FROM TRANSMISSION SHOP, BOTH REAR HUB ASSEMBLIES WENT. AGAIN, SEEMINGLY OVERNIGHT. MY WIFE SAID, "IT FEELS LIKE THE WHEELS ARE GOING TO FALL OFF." SERVICE SHOP SAID, "IT'S A WONDER THE WHEELS DIDN'T FALL OFF." DID THIS THING JUST SELF-DESTRUCT OR WHAT? FORD NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THESE UNTIMELY FAILURES. I HAVE THREE SMALL CHILDREN. UPDATED 06/25/08

I HAVE BEEN QUOTED NEW TRANNY FOR 3,814.18, REAR BRAKES, REAR END NOISE, EGR SYSTEM CODE A 5,000.00 REPAIR AND THE SUV IS ONLY WORTH 7 GRAND. *TR
2002 FORD EXPLORER- A NIGHTMARE OF PROBLEMS THAT KEEP GETTING WORSE. IT HAS 56K MILES ON IT AND I AM ABOUT TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. INDICATOR LIGHTS FLASHING ON AND OFF ,TRANSMISSION RATTLING NOISE AND FAILURE AT 99,000 MILES. *TR
MY WIFE AND I OWN A 2002 FORD EXPLORER XLT. THE VEHICLE O/D LIGHTS STARTED BLINKING AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AS WELL. THE SUV THEN JUST QUIT. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC AND IT HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH COMPLETE TRANSMISSION FAILURE. AFTER READING MANY OTHER WEB SITES THIS APPEARS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE AND MODEL YEAR. FORD IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM, EVEN GOING SO FAR AS ISSUING A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT IT. IF IT HAS BECOME STANDARD PRACTICE FOR THESE TRANSMISSIONS TO FAIL THEN FORD NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE COST OF THE REPAIRS. *TR
WE OWN A 2002 FORD EXPLORER XLT WITH A V6 ENGINE. IT HAS APPROXIMATELY 149,000 MILES BUT HAS BEEN WELL-MAINTAINED. ON 5/24/08 WE EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF OUR TRANSMISSION WHEN DRIVING IN DOWNTOWN SEATTLE. THE O/D LIGHT WOULD BLINK AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE. ATTEMPTS TO RESOLVE THIS FOUND THAT FIRST GEAR WAS AVAILABLE IF WE WOULD ONLY GO FOR ABOUT 100 YARDS AT BEST. WE ENDED UP HAVING IT TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED IT AS A TOTAL FAILURE AND REQUIRED A FULL REBUILD. HE ALSO FOUND THAT THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN MAINTAINED TO SPEC AND THERE WERE NO SERVICE-RELATED ISSUES. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED WHEN WE WERE ON I-5 OR GOING UP A STEEP HILL (OF WHICH THERE ARE MANY IN SEATTLE) THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM. AS IT WAS, A FAMILY OF 5 WAS LEFT STRANDED ON A LONG...
WITH IN THE FIRST YEAR OF HAVING MY VEHICLE I HAD TO HAVE 2 TRANSMISSION REPAIRS. WITHIN THE NEXT YEAR IT WAS DONE AGAIN AND THEN I STARTED TO COMPLAIN ABOUT NOISES AND A THUMPING COMING FROM THE REAR DURING ACCELERATION. I NOW KNOW THAT THE THUMPING IS DUE TO THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL AND AXLE NEEDING REPAIRS. NOW THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THIS IS GOING TO COST ME ABOUT $1,000.00 NOT TO MENTION THAT I HAVE HAD TO HAVE THE TRANSMISSION DONE ALSO AT A COST OF $400.00 THERE ARE MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH THIS SAME COMPLAINT THAT I HAVE NOTICED ON THE INTERNET AND I THINK THAT SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE. *TR
