About Vehicle Safety Data
Our Mission
Vehicle Safety Data is a free vehicle safety resource that brings together five critical government datasets into one searchable platform. Our mission is to help car owners, buyers, and automotive professionals quickly access comprehensive safety information for any vehicle.
We believe that vehicle safety data should be easy to find, easy to understand, and available to everyone. Whether you are researching a car before buying, checking for open recalls on your current vehicle, or investigating a recurring problem, we provide the information you need in a clear, organized format.
Our Data Sources
All data on this website comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a U.S. government agency within the Department of Transportation. We aggregate five distinct datasets:
- 1 Safety Complaints — Owner-reported vehicle problems submitted directly to NHTSA. Each complaint includes a detailed description of the issue experienced.
- 2 Recall Campaigns — Official manufacturer recalls issued when a safety defect is identified. Recalls include the defect description, potential consequences, and the remedy offered.
- 3 Safety Ratings — Crash test results from NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), rated on a 1-to-5-star scale across multiple test categories.
- 4 Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) — Notices from manufacturers to their dealers about known issues and recommended repair procedures.
- 5 Defect Investigations — Formal investigations opened by NHTSA when a potential safety defect pattern is identified across multiple complaints.
What Makes Us Different
While all of this data is publicly available on NHTSA.gov, it is spread across different tools and interfaces. Our platform is the first to cross-reference all five datasets on a single vehicle page, giving you a complete safety picture at a glance.
For any vehicle, you can instantly see:
- How many complaints have been filed and for which components
- Whether there are active recalls
- The official crash test safety rating
- Technical service bulletins from the manufacturer
- Any open or closed NHTSA investigations
