THE 2002 EXPLORER WITH THE 5-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION DEFINITELY HAS MANUFACTURING FLAWS AND SHOULD EITHER BE REPLACED OR REPAIRED.*AK

CONSUMER EXPERIENCED A PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSION ON ANOTHER FORD VEHICLE. TRADED IT IN FOR A NEW VEHICLE. THE NEWLY PURCHASED VEHICLE DISPLAYED THE SAME SYMPTOMS AS THE PREVIOUSLY OWNED VEHICLE. T HE GEARS SLIPPED WHEN PRESSING THE GAS, THEN IT ENGAGED. THE VEHICLE WENT FROM 50 MPH TO 30 MPH.*AK
SEVERAL PROBLEMS - AT 9,000 MILES MY BRAKES WENT AND HAD TO HAVE MY ROTORS RESURFACED BY 23,000 MILES MY REAR BRAKES WERE COMPLETELY GONE AND MY FRONT BRAKES WERE NEARLY GONE. THIS COST ME OVER $1,000 TO REPAIR. AT 25-27,000 MILES MY VEHICLE WOULD NOT CHANGE GEARS PROPERLY. GOING IN REVERSE THE VEHICLE WOULD "BANG" INTO GEAR, THEN GOING FROM PARK TO ANY GEAR THIS WOULD HAPPEN. ON LEVEL GROUND AND ON HILL. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY GUESSED AT THE PROBLEM AND FIXED SOMETHING IN THE TRANSMISSION. AT 32,000 MILES THE PIECE OF PLASTIC UNDER THE LIFTGATE WINDOW COMPLETELY CRACKED. SINCE UNDER WARRANTY THE DEALERSHIP IS FIXING THIS. THERE HAS BEEN A "WHINING" NOISE WHILE USING THE GAS PEDAL FOR SOME TIME THAT THE DEALERSHIP CAN NOT RECREATE.... I EXPECT THAT TO GO WRONG AS SOON AS MY WARRANTY EXPIRES. I THINK YOU ONLY GET 36,000 MILE WARRANTY BECAUSE...
OVER TIME NOTICED JERKING WHILE UPSHIFTING. LOUD WINDING NOISE AT HIGH WAY SPEEDS WHEN ON GAS PEDAL. DRIVE MOSTLY HIGHWAY AND STILL EXTREMLY POOR MPG. 9.8-10.6MPG AVERAGE ON HIGHWAY! ALSO PASSENGER SIDE REAR SEAT BELT DOES NOT RETRACT. HAD REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
MY TRUCK WORKED FINE FOR THE FIRST 18000 MILES I HAVE HAD IT AND NOW IT HAS ALMOST 45000 MILES ON IT. WHEN THE TRUCK TRIES TO CHANGE GEARS FROM SECOND TO THIRD THE TRANSMISSION MAKES A CLUNK NOISE AND THEN THE REST OF THE TIME IT CHANGES GEARS FINE. THE NOISE JUST HAPPENS BETWEEN SECOND TO THIRD GEAR.*JB
TRANSMISSION DIED AT 3642 MILES VERY LOW MILAGE TRANSMISSION HAS TO BE DEFECTIVE AND IT COSTS MORE THAN 3,000$ TO FIX IT. THE COST SHOULD BE PICKED UP BY FORD.*AK
MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER XLT HAD A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. WHEN PUTTING IT IN REVERSE NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN FOR 5 - 10 SECONDS. THEN IT WOULD LURCH INTO GEAR AND REV UP AND SHOOT BACKWARDS. SINCE NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN YOU WOULD THINK IT NEEDED GAS AND THEN WHEN IT ENGAGED AFTER 5 - 10 SECONDS IT WOULD LUNGE FASTER BACKWARDS CREATING A SERIOUS RISK OF BACKING INTO SOMEONE OR SOMETHING. FORD FIXED THE PROBLEM AT MY EXPENSE (OVER $1000) SAYING THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION CONTROLLER. OTHERS THAT I HAVE SPOKE TO HAVE SAID THEY HAVE HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS. I THINK THAT THIS SHOULD BE SUBJECT TO A SAFETY RECALL. *JB

THE AIR CONDITION STOP WORKING IN DECEMBER OF 2003 AND AT THE TIME MY CAR WAS BARELY 1 YEAR OLD THIER HAS BEEN MANY OTHER CONCERN WITH MY EXPLORER THAT I AM MAKING $500.00 PAYMENT ON. MY 2002 EXPLORER HAS BEEN THROUGH TWO TRANSMISSION OVERHAULS IN ONLY 53,000 MI. THE FIRST TRANSMISSION OVERHAUL WAS PERFORMED AT 35,000MI BY A LOCAL FORD DEALER WHO CLAIMED TO HAVE REPLACED THIS, THAT AND THE OTHER! I WAS GIVEN AN EXTRA 12,000MI WARRANTY ON THAT TRANSMISSION. WELL IT LASTED 12,000MI BUT AT 50,000MI THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT AGAIN!!! FORD INSISTS THAT I TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHO WANTS TO CHARGE ME $3000 TO FIX THIS PROBLEM AGAIN! I OPTED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER SHOP THAT SPECIALIZES IN TRANSMISSION REPAIRS. I PAID THEM $2000 TO REBUILD THE TRANSMISSION YET AGAIN. APPARENTLY, ON THIS MODEL YEAR THE CASINGS ARE DEFECTIVE. THE TRANSMISSION SHOP TOLD ME THAT HE HAS ALREADY SEEN 4 OF THESE EXPLORERS ALL WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL DONE ON THE 2002 EXPLORERS ALONG WITH THE 2004. *AK
CONSTANT TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS SINCE PURCHASE OF CAR FROM FORD DEALER W/29,000 MILES ON IT. ROBLEMS: TRANSMISSION SHUTTERING, BANGING IN GEAR, BANGING INTO REVERSE(ALWAYS) AND OVERDRIVE LIGHT BLINKS ON AND OFF SOMETIMES. MY TRANSMISSION FAILED IN MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER V-8 EDDIE BAUER EDITION. IT'S 2 WEEKS OVER THE WARRANTY PERIOD, BUT HAS ABOUT 35000 MILES ON IT, SO IT'S UNDER THE 36000 MILEAGE. FORD WON'T COVER THE REPAIR EVEN THOUGH MY CAR HAS BEEN PROPERLY MAINTAINED.*AK

THE DEALER HAS TUNED THE TRANSMISSION 3 TIMES AND NOW AT 109,000 HWY MILES I NEED A NEW TRANMISSION FOR $3,000 USD. THIS TRANMISSION HAS RECEIVED NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS IN THE NHTSA DATABASE AND HAS ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT WHERE I HIT ANOTHER CAR WHEN REVERSE ENGAGED AFTER 3 SECONDS. I HAVE ALREADY SPENT IN EXCESS OF $500 ON THIS TRANSMISSION AND THE FIRST MAINTENANCE OCCURRED AT 32,000 MILES. IN ADDITION, THE AXLE SEALS CONTINUE TO LEAK AFTER BEING REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES AND PER MY DEALER SOURCES ARE A DESIGN FLAW. NHTSA NEEDS TO GET THIS PUBLIC BEFORE SOMEONE GETS KILLED WITH THE TRANSMISSION ISSUES AND HAVE FORD CORRECT THEIR DESIGN FLAW ON THE AXLE.

I HAVE A 2002 EXPLORER WITH AROUND 67,XXX MILES. THE PROBLEM FIRST STARTED OUT WITH A LOUD "POP" SOUND WHEN ENGAGING IN REVERSE. THEN WHILE DRIVING MY OVERDRIVE OFF LIGHT STARTED FLASHING LIKE CRAZY AND NOT WANTING TO SHIFT. THE TECHNICIAN INDICATED THAT NOTHING WAS WRONG. FOUR DAYS LATER THE SERVICE TRANSMISSION AND O/D LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN HAD TO THE DEALER WHO INFORMED THE CONSUMER THAT THE TRANSMISSION HAD FAILED. SINCE THE VEHICLE IS NO LONGER UNDER IT'S WARRANTY THE CONSUMER FEELS THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST OF A NEW TRANSMISSION. *NM
LEASED NEW '02 EXPLORER IN MAR 02. HAVE HAD A WARPED DRIVESHAFT REPLACED, CLUNKING NOISE IN REAR END AREA WAS "NORMAL', AND NOW AT 65K MILES HAVE TO REPLACE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION. FMC OF COURSE CLAIMS NO RESPONSIBILITY- VEHICLE ISN'T UNDER WARRANTY AND I SHOULD TAKE IT UP WITH DEALER. DEALER SAYS 3000 DOLLARS TO FIX. ALSO HAD THE STALLING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS WITH SPEEDOMETER READING BETWEEN 5 AND 95 MPH APPROXIMATELY 1 1/2 YEARS AGO. DEALER FOUND NOTHING WRONG.*AK

I HAVE A 2002 FORD EXPLORER XLT THAT HAS 68000 MILES ON IT. SINCE WE HAVE HAD IT THE TRANSMISSION HAS DONE NOTHING BUT SHIFT HARD AND WASHBOARD FROM 2ND TO 3RD AND 3RD TO OVERDRIVE. THIS VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IN 2 TIMES, AND BOTH TIMES WE WERE TOLD THAT IT WAS NORMAL. I HAVE HAD ISSUE GOING UP HILL IN MINE BECAUSE OF THE SHIFTING, AFRAID TO PASS BECAUSE I AM NOT SURE IF THE VEHICLE WILL SHIFT. I FINALLY TOOK IN MY EXPLORER LAST WEEK AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE COMPUTER SAID THAT THE BEARINGS WERE BAD IN MY TRANSMISSION AND THAT I HAD TO PAY $3000 TO REPLACE IT. THIS SAME ISSUE HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE I FIRST COMPLAINED ABOUT IT AT 16000 MILES. *NM

I AM THE OWNER OF 2002 FORD EXPLORER XLT. I PLACED THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND EXITED THE VEHICLE, I TOOK ITEMS OUT OF THE BACK HATCH AND LEFT THE VEHICLE AREA. WITHIN A 5 TO 10 MINUTE PERIOD OF TIME, THE VEHICLE'S TRANSMISSION SLIPPED OUT OF PARK AND BEGAN ROLLING, THE VEHICLE ROLLED DOWN AN EMBANKMENT, FLIPPED OVER ON IT'S ROOF THEN LANDED ON ANOTHER VEHICLE PARKED DOWN IN THE YARD. *AK THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN DETERMINED TO BE TOTALLED. I AM THANKFUL THAT NO ONE WAS IN THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME OF THIS MALFUNCTION BECAUSE THEY SURELY WOULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT THIS TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION MAY OCCUR TO OTHERS WHO MAY NOT BE SO FORTUNATE AND INJURIES MAY OCCUR.

VEHICLE STALLS AFTER DRIVING 20 MILES OR ABOVE ON FREEWAY. WHEN ON EXIT RAMP,ENGINE LIGHT TURNS ON AND THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF. I HAVE TO PUT IT IN PARK AND START ENGINE AGAIN. THE VEHICLE ALSO ACCELERATES WHEN STOPPED AT LIGHT, WHILE FOOT IS ON BRAKE. THE ENGINE STALLS TO CHANGE INTO FASTER SPEED. *AK

AUTO-TRANSMISSION STARTED OUT WITH DELAYED ENGAGEMENT IN TO REVERSE AND HARD SHIFTS 25-30 MPH. STARTED TO SLIP OUT OF DRIVE WITH NO POWER TO THE WHEELS. THIS HAPPEN SEVERAL TIMES, ONCE WHEN PULLING OUT ACROSS TRAFFIC AND COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. REPAIRS ARE ESTIMATED TO EXCEED $2500.

WAS TOLD IT WOULD COST $3350 TO FIX, I ASKED FOR HELP FROM MY SALESMAN AND FORD KNOCKED OFF $1700.00 LEAVING ME TO PAY $1650.00. I HAD NO WARNING SIGNS UNTIL THE SPEEDOMETER STATED 30 MILES PER HOUR WHILE THE I WAS GOING 5 MILES PER HOUR. THEN THE HIGH PITCHED WHINING NOISE STARTED. THE TRANSMISSION SHOULD NOT GIVE OUT AT 40,000 MILES. *CB
