2019 RAM 1500 Steering Problems

I JUST PICKED UP A 2019 RAM 1500 CLASSIC TRADESMAN AND TWO WEEKS AFTER MY POWER STEERING STARTED TO GO IN AND OUT. AND NOW IT DOESN'T WORK AT ALL. I CALL THE DEALER AND THEY SAID IT'S NOT ON THE RECALL LIST,BUT IT'S THE SAME PROBLEM THAT THE RECALL WAS FOR. THEY GAVE ME A PRICE TO REPLACE THE STEERING GEAR. I ONLY HAVE 33,980 MILES ON THIS TRUCK.

The vehicles power steering goes out. The wipers turn on automatically. The lights on the dashboard flicker. The battery voltage keeps dying. The message dash starts to go crazy and everything starts to say something is wrong. I was driving on interstate 95 when all power steering went causing me to lose control of the truck. I almost crashed. A car shop did inspect it but could not figure out why this was happening when I showed him the footage I took of the truck when this happened.

While the vehicle is running is hard to turn left and the steering wheel got stuck turning left at any speed..!!! This problem happens very frequently sense the date of purchase..!! The vehicle currently has 100541 miles

When the truck is at low speeds, the power steering will occasionally stop working. If it does not come back on after a moment or two, i can put the car in neutral, which sometimes kicks it back on. I noticed this started happening after i had my truck in tow mode, but that could be just a coincidence.

I have been experiancing power steering failure on my 2019 Ram 1500 (21,000 miles) vehicle at random times since the end of November 2022. On 12/13/22 it was dropped at a Dodge dealership in Queens NY where they had my vehicle for seven days and I was told it was because of my battery and they installed and charged me for a new one. That was some help but it did not resolve the problem completly and it continued to happen all though less frequently and with time it progressively got worse. On Febuary 14, 2023 I droppped the vehicle at a Dodge dealership in Nanuet NY and there diagnosis was the steering box needed replacement at a cost of $3600.00. My truck got hit in the front right, including the front right wheel that had a fairly high impact, alloy wheel is bent in one section (see attached photo). After that impact I was not able to steer or apply the breaks. The steering wheel would not move either direction no mater how much force I applied. On top of that, the brake pedal was rock solid and no matter how much force I applied, I could not get the truck to slow down. So I was a passenger and had no control over the truck. Electrical system failed. A new battery was installed 1 month ago and on 10/28/23, I went to start the truck and it hesitated but started up then I lost power and it would not start again. I had it jumped and the service auto start/stop light, check engine and battery light came on. I pulled out from work and the engine hesitated. Electric power steering service causing safety issues due to no power steering! Lost power steering on highway during rush hour and dealer won't cover it. Out of warranty.

When turning to left vehicle will say power steering unavailable and stop working intermittently and the rear end howls.

While driving down the highway i received a message in my dash that my power steering was no longer available. I was in a slight curve (not too bad). The steering was instantly hard to move the wheel. It was not too alarming. Then the warning went away and the power steering resumed immediately. Then the pressure that i was using was too much and my truck started swerving until i could regain control of it. Now the power steering is going in and out almost every time i drive it. While the whole thing is dangerous the most worrisome part is the fact that the power steering returns when i am turning causing a jerk to the vehicle depending on what curve i am in at the time.

Every time I turn on my truck my steering wheel locks out for 15-20 minutes not allowing me to turn my tires. After waiting for the “service power steering” warning sign goes away it’ll then unlock allowing me to drive.

Power steering went out while attempting to back up.

Was driving, hit a moderate sized pothole and lost all power steering. Steering became extremely stiff and hard to turn. Was almost impossible to make turns to get out of the roadways. Vehicle had 42000 miles on it at the time of the incident. Steering rack needed to be replaced. Power steering rack should not fail under normal use conditions, especially when hitting said pothole did not damage any other suspension components, nor knock it out of alignment.

Power steering was intermittent. And had to be towed to the dealership. There was an internal short in the power rack found. Similar to the recall on around 150,000 of the same year male and model.

Excessive play in steering, especially during turns, truck tends to slightly drift

Driving at speed around a curve and lost all power steering without warning. Almost put car in ditch because the steering wheel was yank out of my hands when power steering was lost.

STEERING STICKS WHEN GOING TO THE LEFT AT 35 MPH AND UP. STICKS AT 10-11 OCLOCK POSITION AND MUST BE FORCEFULLY RETURNED TO CENTER CAUSING VEHICLE TO JERK. OVER AND UNDER STEER HAS TO BE CONSTANTLY MANAGED AND IS DANGEROUS. HAS CAUSED ME TO CROSS YELLOW LINE INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC.

I was driving 70mph on the freeway when my power steering stopped working. No warning lights came on. I slowed to 55 mph and it seemed to help. Steering is working currently but not sure for how long.

The power steering on my 2019 Ram 1500 stopped working while driving on Interstate Hwy 94 in Wisconsin in heavy holiday traffic on Friday, June 30, 2023. The steering wheel vibrated, I heard a warning sound, and a warning message came up that indicated the power steering needed servicing; there was immediate loss of the power steering; this all happened in 2-3 seconds. It was only because I was strong enough that I was able to exit the Interstate and return to my home about 90 miles away. Had my wife or another person with not as much strength been driving, they would not have been able to manage the situation. It is a definite safety issue. 
The next time I entered the vehicle a day or two later to have it inspected, it was working again. But, again, on Saturday, July 8, 2023, the same issue occurred on Wisconsin...

The Electronic power steering system stops working without warning or cause. It is available for inspection. While driving the loss of power steering stops you from be able to steer for turns or avoid a collision. A dealer confirmed that the (EPS) is shorting out causing this to happen. A warning light appears when EPS stops working stating "POWER STEERING IS UNEVALUABLE". There is a recall for 2019 1500 RAM's but my VIN is not one of the recalled. The serial number of the EPS gear is on the list of contaminated ones TIC2609A4211 I have reached out to Chrysler twice now and will not help me.

Steering wheel is getting stuck at 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock positions causing the wheel to not return to center without force drastically increasing the possibility to crash.

My power steering stopped working when I was driving on a highway. My safety was put at risk when suddenly it was very difficult and almost impossible to control the direction of travel of my truck. The problem was confirmed by Tomball Dodge in Tomball, Texas. The gear-rack and pinion was inspected by Tomball Dodge and they determined that it needed to be replaced. The charge for the repair was approximately $4,000.00 which included a mandatory wheel alignment. I received various warning lamps and messages in November of 2022 when the mileage was a little over 14,000 but if I turned off the engine and restarted it there would be no message or warning lamp on the dash. I called Auto Nation where I purchased the truck to try and make an appointment and they advised they were extremely busy and it would take at least 5-7 days to diagnose...

Power steering has gone out twice while driving making it extremely hard to turn. A light comes on stating that "power steering is unavailable". I see that the same year, make and model has a recall for this, but my VIN does not. I have not taken to a dealer do to the expense that may occur.

This is a second report to NHTSA for power steering issues. Three separate times, the power steering cut out between speeds of 30 - 45 MPH making it difficult to turn and change lanes.

The vehicle has worn out mechanical components and shakes at highways speeds and the wheels bearing/balljoints are so bad the vehicle swerves all over the road and is nearly impossible to keep under control. I visited the dealer service center and asked for it to be repaired. They answered my call after a week and said they have found nothing severely wrong with the truck and it is ready to be picked up. This is a danger to all drivers on the road also to my girlfriend and I. This is unprofessional and criminal.

ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING MY DODGE RAM PICKUP AFTER ABOUT 39 MINUTES OF DRIVING THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND THE POWER STEERING WOULD FAIL MAKING IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER. A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION TO BE PUT IN. i TOOK IT TO MY DODGE RAM DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED IT NEW AND THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE EPS-U1601 CONFIRMED A FAILED ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING UNIT. THE DEALER REPLACED THE UNIT AT A COST OF 3275 DOLLARS . THIS DESPITE THE FACT THAT FIAT CHYSLER OF AMERICA ISSUED A SAFETY RECALL VB8/NHTSA 19V-812 FOR THIS VERY VEHICLE YEAR AND MODEL AND THE HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS ON VARIOUS WEBSITES FOR THIS VERY ISSUE. YET FCA AND THE NHTSA CLAIM IT DOESNT APPLY TO MY VIN, AMAZING! THERE IS A REAL ISSUE HERE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND NOT GIVEN THE RUN-A-ROUND LIKE I HAVE.

The power steering cannot be manually manipulated when this happens giving you only an option to stop completely wherever you are.
