NHTSA Complaint #11563733 — 2019 RAM 1500

The contact owns a 2019 Ram 1500. The contact stated while starting the vehicle, a message indicating that the power steering was off was displayed temporarily. Additionally, the contact stated that while her son was driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost power steering functionality, and the steering wheel was pulling to the left. The contact stated that the failure had occurred with oncoming traffic, nearly causing a crash. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring intermittently while driving at slow speeds. The contact stated that each time the failure occurred, her son pulled to the side of the road, turned off and restarted the vehicle, and waited until the power steering became functional. The contact's son then continued driving; however, the failure recurred intermittently while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the steering rack assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V812000 (Steering) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 49,900.
