During steady state low-load extended drive on freeway, engine pushed out oil dipstick and all oil out of dipstick tube with no warning. Engine rattled then seized while on the highway, requiring a tow. There were no warnings prior to the "low oil pressure" light that preceded the engine stopping.

Vehicle drops into 1st gear randomly while driving on the highway. Extremely dangerous
The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that on numerous occasions when the vehicle is powered up, the engine compartment rattled and the check engine light warning light was illuminated. The contact added that the check engine light remained illuminated for a short period of time and then disappeared. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed as needing the cam phaser replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 42,000.
The truck is 5 years old and has just hit 70K mileage. The transmission has just started slipping between gears 1 and 6. Ford tells me there is nothing wrong with their engines and they don't hear of any issues with this years vehicle and the transmission. Back in July 2022, I had to take the truck to Ford because it would just shut off in the middle of traffic. I had to have the engine censors replaced due to this. Ford tells me there is no correlation between the two issues. Ford says I need a new transmission and they will not pay for it since my warranty was expired in February 2023 and I am 10K miles over.
Engine rattle on deceleration is a known issue on 5.0 V8. Vehicle was brought in to a dealer in May of 2022 who was able to replicate the issue. Ford has a "remedy" in form of TSB 18-2354 which was performed by a dealer. Rattle noise was still present immediately afterwards and noted by tech performing the work but was deemed normal operation. A year later now in April 2023 I brought the truck back to Ford dealer with same loud rattle on deceleration noise and once again it was looked at and once again it was deemed normal operation. How can a loud rattle noise from engine once deemed worthy of TSB fix and not fixed by the TSB now be deemed normal operation? I do not believe and refuse to accept that rattling engine on deceleration is a normal operation, especially since not all 5.0 V8 engines do...
My vehicle has a cam phaser failure as simular to other Ford F150s that have been recalled for the same issue, however my Vin does not fall under the same issue for the cam phaser recall. There must of been some vins that were missed by the recall and mine is one of them.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while her husband was driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the cam phasers were replaced; however, the failure recurred. The contact stated that the engine made abnormal sputtering sounds while driving and while the vehicle was parked. The vehicle was taken to a second dealer, Campus Ford (2401 W Main St, Waynesboro, VA 22980) where it was diagnosed and determined that the cam phasers needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 18,000.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, an abnormal clicking sound was coming from the vehicle without warning. The contact had initially taken the vehicle to two dealers who were both unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was then taken to Downtown Ford Sacramento (1535 Howe Ave, Sacramento, CA 95825) where a diagnostic test was performed, and an oil leak was discovered coming from the front valve cover of the engine. The mechanic also discovered a defective Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT). The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.
My truck is at a Ford dealer and has been diagnosed with the cam phaser problem that is identified and covered in a Ford Customer Satisfaction Program(21N03). For some reason my VIN does not qualify. I'm wondering why my truck is not covered even though it is the correct year, assembly plant, and is having the same issue?
Transmission has been repaired by Ford Dealer multiple times without fixing the hard shifting issues that run common on this vehicle. Ford dealer states that nothing is wrong even after the truck has been in the shop multiple times for the same issue.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, there was an abnormal clicking noise coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The contact was informed by the mechanic that the vehicle had experiencing the failure listed in an unknown recall. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and the dealer stated that the vehicle was out of warranty. The manufacturer was contacted and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was 27,000.
My 2018 Ford 150 with the 5.0 engine is burning up oil. Looking on line I see that there are other owners of this type having the same problem.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated while starting the vehicle he heard an abnormal knocking sound coming from the engine. The contact stated that the knocking sound was heard while driving the vehicle at various speeds. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the cam phasers needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the cam phasers were replaced over a year ago. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The contact related the failure to Ford Customer Satisfaction Program: 21N03 (Engine). The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
I noticed the truck began rattling in the mornings or when the engine was cold. I was driving on the freeway when it started losing power and the check engine light was flashing. It had been misfiring and progressively got worse. I managed to get off the freeway in time to shut the vehicle off. The vehicle has gone through diagnostic testing at a Ford dealership. The service tech informed me that the cam phasers needed to be replaced because they were sticking and the computer needed to be reprogrammed. The computer was then reprogrammed and I drove the vehicle home, 5 miles away, and it would not start again. After some research, I was made aware that the CAM PHASERS are a KNOWN ISSUE on the Ford F 150 Raptor through the Customer Satisfaction Program no. 21N03-initiated by NHTSA. This replacement covers the 2017-2020 F150 Raptor if manufactured at...
Transmission slips, changes gears. Auto start slams into forward gear. Ten speed transmission not safe to drive. Taking truck to dealership for two years with no resolution. Phaser start up rattle. Taking it to dealership for two years with no resolution.
I was pulling out into 4 lanes of traffic and the truck shut off. Dash had message "Auto StartStop Shift to P, then Restart Engine". I am stuck blocking 4 lanes of traffic on a busy street with cars coming fast. I put in park and restarted the engine. It died and gave the same message 4 more times. Finally revved the engine way up and was able to move the truck. It died twice while approaching the next stop sign even though Auto Start/Stop was disabled. Revved engine and was able to make it to the Ford dealer who had no one available to assess the problem. Several people suggested replacing the battery. I put in a new battery and reset the battery monitoring system. The problem still persists. Slamming a dead pickup into park in the middle of 4 lanes of oncoming traffic is most definitely a safety...
Engine light came on. Brough to dealership who reported the issue is an Engine Coolant Temp Sensor. It is listed under a bulletin and is a known issue that can result in overheating and engine failure. Vehicle has >30,000 and Ford refuses to cover the cost of repairs.
Ford has recalled a Cam phaser for the 2018 F-150 3.5L Eco boost trucks for specific vin number. I took my truck into Larry H Miller Ford Draper dealership to have it looked at because the Cam phaser makes a very loud and distinctive rattle noise when it has a cold start. The dealership technicians told me that it was the same exact issue that the trucks that do have the recall are doing, but they are not able to do my repair because I do not have that recall. I reached out to Ford customer service, and they said they are not able to help or add the recall to my vehicle. My Cam phaser is still continuing to do the same thing with the same problem and would like to get my vin and even other Ford owners with this same issue.
Exiting a major freeway. Truck lost all power and dash lights illuminated. With a message. Place and park and restart engine. Resulting in me narrowly avoiding a major accident, due to lack of power and braking. After running off the side of the highway and stopping. Vehicle could be restarted with no check engine or faults. However, this is extremely dangerous. After getting home and researching to see if this is a problem to other Ford F150 owners. Others have reported similar problems. Will not be driving vehicle because its unsafe.
My vehicle engine stalls, the engine failed few times while driving at different speed. My F150 also suffers from oil consumption, low oil levels, rattling noise, valve noise while accelerating, and I had to replace the catalytic converter and both oxygen sensors due to that problem but that didn't solve the issue as it does exist and I was told by several experts that this problem is popular with the Ford 5.0 Coyote engines.
Ford has multiple Customer Satisfaction Notices on this problem, as well as is Listed on the NHTSA site. My vehicle is a 2018 Ford F-150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost engine. I have approximately 64K miles on this vehicle. I began to hear a rattle in the engine during cold starts. I took it to the dealership, and the vehicle requires cam phaser, etc… replacement. Ford has offered some customers assistance on this repair, and not assisted others. I fall into the not assisted portion. This is a common problem with these vehicles. One only has to do a Google search, or YouTube search, to find many unhappy customers. There should clearly be a recall on the vehicles with this motor installed, but Ford refuses to stand behind their product.
excessive oil consumption > abnormal engine sounds > poor engine performance > stalling engine > engine shaking excessively > reoccurring p0022 codes > abnormal/hard shifting in transmission during acceleration or cruising > even failed acceleration engine shutting down while passing vehicles at highway speeds on interstate travel putting myself & other vehicles around me at risk; recognized excessive oil consumption before 50K miles but didn't realize ongoing problem because regularly changed oil 3-5K miles but it has worsened over time burning up to 3-4Q every 3K miles (currently 155K miles on truck). Dealership confirmed excessive oil consumption: changed dipstick & reprogrammed computer (PCM); didn't help, seems worse now. Check Engine Light chronically appears, even the "wrench" light has appeared twice in past 10K miles but will turn off after adding 2Q oil. I now change oil every 3K and add 1Q every 750-1000 miles until oil change is due to...
My 2018 Ford F150 is having problems shifting into gears and will disengage from gear while trying and rev up the engine until I take my foot off of the gas and the RPM's decrease and the transmission re-engages. Sometime this causes harsh shifting and sudden jerks of the truck. I notified the dealership and was put on a long waiting list but told to keep driving it. My place in line finally came up and was notified that the transmission was shot but the time frame to get a new transmission is 2 to 3 months. The vehicle is at the dealership right now so you would need to visit the dealership for inspection. I would say this item has put safety at risk since the vehicle will slow down while driving on the freeway. On the day I was scheduled to drop the truck off at the dealership,...
The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, there was a clunking sound coming from the engine compartment. The contact indicated that the failure was intermittent. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, but the failure could not be duplicated, and no repair was performed. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 1,500.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, there was a rattling sound coming from the engine compartment. The contact indicated that the failure was present during cold starts. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the engine cam phasers were faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 61,000.
Vehicle had electrical issues - Diagnosis by dealership was water damage to the Body Control Module. This module is inside the cabin on the front passenger area by their feet/legs. The issues included - flashers goin off, horn going off, truck bed gate dropping open - while parked and while driving down highway, and entire vehicle just shutting down while ALL of the issues happened at once. People have been put at risk by the gate dropping and the immediate shut down of an operating vehicle. The dealer was able to reproduce the problem. I had it happen twice. I have since identified that it is something that is a known issue on F150 forums. So much so that the likely cause of the water damage has been identified, and forwarded to the manufacturer. They are not fixing the issue. Manufacturer's dealership technician identified the water damage as the root...
My truck stalls when I brake to a full stop when the auto start/stop is deactivated. It is an intermittent problem that I have had the Ford dealer investigate twice with no resolution. It is a bothersome irritation that can potentially get me rear-ended when, at a traffic light, the truck dies and I have to shift to park, restart the engine, shift back into drive, and hopefully make it out of there.
Cam Phasers Still Rattle after recall work was done. Ford refuses to fix it properly.
Engine rattles for 10 seconds at start up caused by the camshaft timing phasers in the engine not performing correctly. This is an ongoing problem with Ford trucks. This causes unpredictable performance from the engine at any given time. It will set a permanent code in the PCM for camshaft timing not in specifications, Check engine light. Ford was fixing the problem after complaints to customer care but doesn't now.
I have a 3.5 ecoboost in my F150 and it has the known cam phaser problem. Ford is refusing to pay for the repair even though they know and have acknowledged the problem. This issue is pretty much effecting every 3.5 built. Being a mechanical component within the motor I would think that it will eventually fail causing a catastrophic failure in the motor that if it happens at the wrong time it could cause a serious traffic crash.
Ford Initiated 21B10 Cam Phaser reprogram recall, which updates the software to prevent rattling on start up. My issue the software update is a temporary repair that will ultimately reduce Ford repair liability when vehicles power train warranty expires. With my personal vehicle I experienced a transmission failure while commuting on a congested Hwy in a construction zone. The transmission failed at 18000 Miles. The 21B10 PCM software update was performed in July and did not take, the engine rattle on cold start has resurfaced. In addition, it is my understanding that this issue causes the engine to run harder and is less efficient with fuel. This is most likely the reason my fuel mileage never reached the manufacturer benchmarks. I have taken the vehicle back to a shop and the rework is 10 hours, the dealer estimated 30-45 days for parts ordering and service back logs. All of this...
Trucks transmission makes a loud noise when shifting from park to drive, trucks transmission also jerks when letting off the accelerator. Trucks engine makes a knocking noise when idling truck has 36000 miles on it!
The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 MPH and slowing for a traffic signal or sign, the brake pedal was depressed and while coming to a stop the vehicle suddenly accelerated independently. The contact stated that there was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent however, the failure had started to occur at start up and the vehicle would accelerate independently. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer who diagnosed the vehicle but was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 28,000.
This 2018 F150 developed a cranking noise when starting the engine. Dealership tried two software upgrades per manufacturer notices to solve the issue. The issue was not solved and was said to be Cam Phasers need to be replaced. Manufacturer internal document to dealer stated that driving the vehicle with this problem would not cause any problems and is safe to drive. Dealership had been waiting months for parts. Set-up for an appointment was for later this month, but last month while driving on the Interstate the engine light which was on from the engine issue but a new light, the wrench light came on with the engine light flashing. All power was being lost and had to dodge other vehicles to move over to emergency lane as I had no control of the vehicle. While waiting 12 hours for a tow, I had researched this issue online and found...
While driving 5mph 5 minutes after starting the truck, the truck caught on fire and burst into flames after stalling out.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the engine was making abnormal rattling sounds. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact associated the failure to Customer Satisfaction Program Campaign Numbers: 21N03 and 21N08. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.
Engine burns oil even though a oil consumption test was done and all updates performed. Engine still make chatter noise on acceleration occasionally.
My truck has an automatic start-stop feature. About twice a month, when I am at a stop and the auto stop shuts down the engine, the whole truck will shut down. I will then have to put the transmission into park, turn the key to off and then restart the truck. A warning light comes up on my front display which says Auto StartStop Shift to P, then Restart Engine. The A with the arrow around it is in orange. This has caused me many issues in traffic and I have been close to getting rear ended on multiple occasions because of it. I have had it to the dealer, Haldeman Ford of Kutztown, on 5 different occasions over the past 6 months and it is still not resolved. The dealership has replaced the battery, did a system reboot and replaced the starter. I have shown them pictures and videos...
The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while driving at 20 MPH, the vehicle hesitated during acceleration and made an abnormal rattling noise. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the failure was related to Customer Satisfaction Programs: 21B10 (Cam Phaser Replacement) and 21N08 (PCM Reprogram Due to Engine Shudder) however, the warranty had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the previous owner was mailed notification of Customer Satisfaction Program: 21B10 (Cam Phaser Replacement) and provided no further assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
The issue I am complaining about is Customer Satisfaction Program #21N03. For some reason Ford did not issue a recall on this issue even though they know they have an issue with the cam phasers and this problem is very widespread. The cam phasers on my vehicle failed and had to be replaced and they forced me to pay for a portion of this change even though they knew it was a manufacturing defect and even though they are using a "redesigned" version of the cam phasers in the replacement. This SHOULD BE A RECALL and not a "Customer Satisfaction Program" and the full price of the repair should be covered by the Ford Motor Company. They should have to reimburse me for the full cost of this repair since this is a widespread issue with many 3.5L Ecoboost Engines.
After starting the vehicle, at any time in under a minute the vehicle's engine will randomly shut off and display a message on the instrument cluster "Auto StartStop, Shift to P then Restart Engine". A photo of this message is included in this report. This issue can occur while in Park, Reverse, Neutral, or Drive. I have had it randomly occur to me upwards of 40 occasions over the past 3 years. A few times I have actually been driving at a slow speed (below 10 mph) when the engine stopped. So far for me, it seems to only happen when the engine RPM's are below 1500 or so. It feels like the engine shakes and then shuts off, then the dash chimes and displays the message mentioned above. I follow the instructions; I turn the ignition off, shift to Park, and restart the engine. Sometimes it starts back up...
The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, the vehicle made an abnormal rattling noise. Additionally, the fuel efficiency had decreased. The contact related the failure to Customer Satisfaction Program: 21N03 (Cam Phaser Replacement) however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 66,000.
The contact owns a 2018 Ford F-150. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the engine emitted abnormal knocking and rattling sounds. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to continue driving. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring while starting the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where an unknown software was updated under Ford Customer satisfaction Program Number: 21B10. The dealer informed the contact that an unknown part would be replaced in the event that the software update did not correct the issue. The failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who informed him that the unknown part could no longer be replaced as Ford Service Campaign Number: 21N03 had expired in February 2022. However, the contact had not received a letter. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred...
We took the truck in for a recall for the Camphase III. They stated it will take about three days to fix. The dealership called the next day a stated the truck was ready for pick up. They drove the truck about 120 miles. We notified the dealership the next morning that the truck was not change the gear correctly it was like we was driving a manual. We call and reported the matter to the dealership the said bring it back in two week because they said we had to have an appointment when we had just left the dealership. Took it back two weeks later they said they will have to keep it for another couple of days, call the next day truck is ready, picked up the truck they said drive it for a couple of days and it will stop , but it was worse than...
