Cracked or Broken Spot Welds in the Left Front Door At the Check Arm Attachment Points in the Door Assembly - [XXX] - Available for inspection upon request. The door will not open without creating a loud crunching sound, requiring the passenger to squeeze out before the check point. Check points are inoperative. The window often malfunctions. There was no warning. I found the problem by searching online. This is a common issue with the 2020-2022 Ford Escape. See [XXX] The repair is not covered by the warranty. NHTSA should issue a recall. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

2020 Ford Escape. Front driver door made a lot of creaking noise, hard to open and close, couldn't roll window down because hinge had broken was loose in door. Discussed with Mel Hamilton Ford, Wichita KS, while it was there getting another issue addressed. Said it was not covered under warranty. Just a couple thousand over 36,000. Door popping and creaking began before the 36,000 mile warranty had expired. It was in and out of shop to get another issued figured out. Took to Lubber Ford in Cheney KS and they said the weld was broken took hinge out of door. I took to a body shop, said it can't be fixed needs entire door replaced for $3000.00. Ford knows it's a problem, they offered to pay $1200 of a $3,000 fix. Ford needs to replace door at full cost since they issued a Technical Service Bulletin in Sept. 2021....

Drivers front door began popping when opening and now will not close and window is now not operational. While traveling down highway the door wouldn't latch fully as well. Window now will not go down and door is making a heck of a popping noise

Drivers door won’t close the spot welds are broken on check link mounting bracket
#11575450 |
after dealing with the loud popping of my door for one day, now my window will not roll down and when i open and close my door there is no tension at all. making me believe that the entire inside of my door panel fell apart. it’s scary because i’m worried i may not be able to open or close my door soon, or that it will stop latching.

Drivers door started popping very loud spoke to ford about it they said to report the safety issue on the welds breaking in the door
#11575279 |
The driver’s side front door made a creaking/popping sound when opened due to an issue with the welding. This same issue also prevents the window from being rolled down.
#11575375 |
the door pops when opening and closing. sometimes gets stuck while opening or closing. looks like the door panel is coming undone from the door. arm break check.
#11575398 |
Drivers side door was creaking and now the window will not go down. Reading other complaints seems like a weld issue on the door catch. I do not want this to open while I am driving. I have 41k miles so my basic warranty is not in play. Please let me know if there are other warranties that will cover this.
#11574612 |
I opened door and it made a loud pop and I took it to a dealership and was told it was a Ford issue and the door needed to be replaced but that their wasn’t a recall so I’m just stuck with a door that is very hard and loud to open.

I have a bad weld on the driver's side door of my 2020 Titanium Escape and I am told this is a known issue. The window in the door doesn't work anymore and my door is basically falling off and from what I have read this can happen at any time even while driving. They say the door can fly open even while driving because of the bad weld. I have spoken with Ford and they will only pay a fraction of the bill. This requires a fix of a new door. They are expecting me to pay over $1300 for the repair and they will pay $980. To fix on my own is $3300. Why is there no recall. Do I have to get injured or die to be taken seriously??
#11574647 |
The driver door starting making a loud popping sound. I found out the check arm/hinge broke. Now the door has 3 holes in it, the window will not roll up or down, and the popping sound is still present.
#11574746 |
My driver’s door started making a loud noise. Then it popped real loud and now it has no spring. It will not stay open for me to get out of the car. You have to hold it open. The window will only go down about an inch.

Problems with the driver side door. Purchased car brand new. Currently has 25k miles (roughly). My 3-36k mile warranty ended 10/23. My door is making creaking snapping popping noises and the window Won't go down. I'm concerned the door won't open or worse snap and fall off while driving. I feel I have to hold the door while driving which is not safe. . I have to drive this car for work, I work in the field and need the car to go from location to location throughout the day. . I took it to the dealer garage. The conversation went along the lines, the door arm welds are bad and the garage mentioned they had 5 cars recently with the same problem. They said it was covered and then the door would have to be replaced. They (service dept) sent it over to the body shop stating it was...

Drivers side door inner shell became unwelded. Ford released a TSB technical service bulletin about it, but refuses to call it a recall. Out of pocket $1500

Weld came undone. Driver door does not work properly. Window does not roll down
#11573744 |
The weld that holds the control arm for the front driver side door has broken.
#11573789 |
The driver front door check arm spot welds are breaking, making the door hard to open and close. The vehicle only has 56,000 miles.
#11573551 |
Opening/closing driver door is very difficult must do slowly. Window does not go down. I can see three holes where the spot weld holding the hinge is gone.
#11573368 |
On February 23,2024 the driver door started making very loud scraping and popping noises with physical resistance to opening or closing. The drivers power window started working very slowly like it was being dragged on, and then wouldn't go back up. Pushing on exposed window edge got it finally to go up and close. Over the next several days the noise and resistance has gotten worse. Found out NTSB has opened an investigation into this issue, and Ford has a service memo SSM 50150 as the cause is faulty spot welds on interior door anchors which can lead to door failure and unexpected opening. SO far Ford has not offered any help to repair this issue. I have filed a claim without result yet.

The passenger door hinge made a large noise and was unable to close without extreme force. It was a safety issue as the car function and hinge mechanism failed. The dealer turned me away as they do not "weld" and referred me to a body shop. Yes, my independent auto service stated that the Door Stay and Mounting Bracket three small welds broke off. They were unable to re attach door properly as they do not weld. They noted the drivers side door is also starting to loosen. This is another safety concern.
#11573437 |
When opening driverside door, hinge broke making it difficult to close door securely. Had to have the hinge replaced.
#11573452 |
The driver side door began making a terrible noise upon opening and closing. It would not close. The door eventually closed and the door weld for the hinge failed. The door does not operate properly and now the driver side window does not go down because the door hinge components are broken off inside the door and blocking the window from going down at all. Ford was contacted multiple times about the manufacturer failure and there is still NO Recall on the 2020 Escape AWD. They advised to wait for a letter from Ford allowing the fix. Ford has no information for when they will send letters to customers or dealers to fix the failed manufacturer weld component on the drivers side door.

My driver door began clicking and popping and I was unable to open my door to exit the vehicle . My driver window would not roll down. The following day the metal door arm had popped loose. And where the hinge was welded to the door. 3 holes were found and the metal hinge in the door started moving freely. I am a home care nurse and depend on my vehicle. It feels like the door is going to fall off. This scares me, because I am not sure if I will be unable to open my door or window to exit in case of an emergency. I am also fearful the door will fall off. I called ford and was told no recalls were reregistering for my vin number. I was told my warranty ran out and any repair will have to be paid fully by me. Ford refuses...

The door check bracket is broke to where my door makes a terrible noise and I hear this is affecting over 300,000 Ford escapes
#11573496 |
The driver door welds have broken. The door has been investigated by Courtesy Ford, Hattiesburg, MS. They stated the door would have to be replaced at a cost of $2600. No warning lamps were indicated. Also, the breaks squeal when in reverse.

Drivers side door started to make a loud popping sound and the window stopped rolling down. Every time the drivers side door opens it flings wide open because there’s nothing to keep it in place. Took the car to the dealership it was purchased at and was told that the ford escape has that issue with a faulty weld on the check arm causing it to break completely off with no way to repair it.
#11573128 |
Drivers door spot welds that hold the reinforcing angle for the door check have broken loose allowing the door check angle to move inside of door, this makes it difficult to close the door all the way because the angle is hitting something inside of the door. Looking online this appears to be a common problem, Ford issued a service bulletin for this issue, (SSM 50150), we called the local Ford dealership and was told that since the vehicle is out of warranty there is nothing they can do. Vehicle has about 14,000 miles on it but is about 8 months out of warranty, it was used very little for the first 2 years due to Covid 19 pandemic shutting down the University that is the owner. The passenger door spot welds are also beginning to break loose.

The door just started to make a bad noise and the window will not go down now. The weld mounts on the door have come undone!
#11572704 |
Last week, I heard a popping noise when opening my driver side front door of my 2020 Ford Escape. I had the issue diagnosed by my local Ford dealership as broken spot welds on my door. Since then, the issue has progressed and my door no longer closes properly. It is a safety issue because my door is not closing properly and continuing to get worse. I do not feel comfortable driving until it is fixed. I was referred to a body shop by my local dealership for the issue and will have it repaired this week. The body shop confirmed the broken spot welds on my driver side front door.

The driver door popped open at 70 MPH on the interstate. Pulled over and the door was jammed open about 12 inches. We could not get the door to close or get the window to go down. We had to get out the passenger side. We finally forced the door closed with two of us pushing on it. Now it won't open all the way and the window is stuck about 6 inches from closing. Extremely dangerous situation. The vehicle has 56.000 miles and we purchased it new. Now my wife refuses to ride in it. We are both [XXX] . It's unbelievable that the Ford Motor Company has not addressed this! My dealer is stating the repair could cost us as much as $2000 out of pocket, The NHTSA is our only hope.. Approximately a week ago we noticed a popping sound in our driver side door. You can see where the rivets have popped free from the sheet metal. This car is over its 3 year warranty by about one week. Yet, the dealer and Ford motor company do not want to do anything to replace our door. This is an issue that ford acknowledged as a problem on this specific car. But, no TSB or recall has been issued yet. Hopefully by leaving this message, the NHTSA will look into this concern. I don't need my wife driving this car with a door that is not safe. Thank you!

Hinge on driver's door broke. Door pops every time it opens. Window will not roll all the way down.
#11572650 |
The spot welds holding the door check on driver side have failed. The door does not open or close properly now we have had the vehicle for 3 months. The vehicle has 22000 miles on the Odometer.

Spot welds on drivers side front door attaching the check arm has broken loose causing a loud popping sounds and causing difficulty opening and closing the door. Ford is aware of the problem and refuses to fix it, even though they have been made aware of the issue by Ford through service bulletin numbers SSM 51553 and SSM 50150.

Hello and thanks, for giving this your attention. 2 days ago, I heard a popping noise when I opened my drivers side door. There is now an issue opening and closing the door. The window also, will now not roll down. Upon, looking closer at the door frame, 3 factory tack welds have completely come loose.

Check strap on drivers side door. Door makes a ridiculously loud noise when opening fully and closing.
#11572168 |
Welds that hold the driver door have broken lose causing the door to make a popping sound when opening and closing. You can see where the weld has broken and the inner brackets are no longer attached. Cant open door all the way as it causes it to bind up and not close. Tried to upload pictures but keep getting an error message.

The drivers door is becoming harder to open and close. Was told it is a faulty weld on the door arm. This is a safety concern due to not being able to get out of the vehicle.
#11572212 |
The drivers side door started to have a creaking sound and became difficult to open and close. The window was also hard to open, so I stopped and quickly put it back up. I informed the dealer and they told me they are aware of the problem but Ford isn’t covering it under warranty’s. I am currently still driving the vehicle because I have no other and am just very careful how far I open the door and I’m unable to use the window.

THE HINGES IN MY DRIVERS DOOR HAVE BECOME UNATTACHED AND NEED TO BE FIXED. I WAS BEING QUOTED A 3800.00 TO FIX IT. I HAVE NEVER DRIVEN A CAR THAT HAS HAD THIS ISSUE. I AM VERY DISPAPPOINTED AS THIS IS MY 5TH FORD ESCAPE AND LOVE THE CAR. BUT THIS CAR IS A PIECE OF CRAP. THE CONTACT STATED THE BRACKET THAT HOLDS THE HINGE PIN WELD BROKE INSIDE THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR.

The driver-side door makes a very loud popping and grinding noise. While driving the vehicle approached a stop like the door suddenly opened while in motion. I took the vehicle to the dealership which told me it was the spot welds in the driver's door and that it would need to be replaced. The vehicle is at 41670 miles and is no longer under warranty. Ford is refusing to cover the repair and will not offer any assistance with helping to offset the cost of the vehicle repair. The vehicle is unsafe to drive as the door can open while in motion due to the weld failures. No warning lamps came on when the incident occurred to indicate that the door was open at any time.

Door hinge on driver side making cracking noise when opening and closing door. Unable to roll down window. Took to Ford Dealership to look at issue and they referred me to a body shop to fix the door hinge before they can complete work on the window issue.

Driver side door is making a loud noise when opening and closing the door. Door is binding up/ has resistance. Spot welds to door closer are broken and will almost not allow door to close once it has been opened.
#11571430 |
The driver's door suddenly became hard to open and close and makes loud noise when doing so. The door does not sound like it is closing well which is a huge concern. I took it to dealer and they knew immediately what the problem is as it's a known issue documented by Ford "SSM 50150 - 2020-2021 Escape - Cracked Or Broken Spot Welds In The Left Front Door At The Check Arm Attachment Points In The Door Assembly". They gave a quote of $3,200 to replace and repair. It is not covered as my car has 39,000 miles and warranty expired at 36,000 miles. I DON'T BELIEVE MILEAGE SHOULD HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH DOOR FAILURE!!! Ford Motor should step up and fix this known issue - it is a manufacturing defect that welds are failing
#11571229 |
Popping noise coming from drivers side door. There is resistance when shutting the door and window will not go down. No incidents occurred that would have caused this to happen.
#11571097 |
Drivers side front door welding has come off the cross-arm bracket making the door make a scratching sound when opening it closing. Has also caused the window to have issues. Door doesn't always latch correctly not and because of the welding that came undone afraid the door will fall off. This could happen while drive and cause not only my car with myself and my family to get hurt but could potentially danger other people. FORD refuses to fix the issues without making me pay for a whole new door when the welding that came undone is a manufacturing flaw that Ford did, nothing that consumers are doing wrong.

Drivers door hinge stop bracket spot welds broke causing popping and cracking noise when opening and closing door. Window only goes down a few inches. Door won't close sometimes without several tries
#11569873 |
Driver's door hinge welds failed (broke loose). This safety hazard may occur while operating vehicle. The hinge was attached to the door with 3 spot welds. The 3 spot welds all failed. The drivers door may open while driving and do not close once the welds have failed.
#11569884 |
When closing the driver's side front door, an audible clicking sound was heard. When opening the door at my destination, some mechanism inside the door failed. I was unable to close the door all the way. I immediately drove to the Ford dealership service department, holding the door as closed as it would go (about a 12 inch gap). I have been waiting for two weeks for the repair to even be begun.
