2019 RAM 1500 Power Train Problems

Vehicle developed the infamous "hemi tick" chronicled in multiple news articles, bulletins & complaints. Defective exhaust manifold design causes it to trap heat, melting the bolts and cracking the manifolds. This leads to loud ticking when engine is started from cold and can eventually lead to engine failure. Had to have both manifolds replaced, along with gaskets.

Recall 44A I contacted Promaster Case Management Case # [XXX] Their reply was that I go to Wilson Motors 425 N W Buchanan Corvallis, OR 97330, a 5 hour, 14 minute round trip, of 246 miles. I live in a population of approximately 26,000+ people. This is wholly unacceptable when there are 5 dealerships who sell Ram vehicles (2 much closer) closer to my location. A major auto manufacturer should not be selling vehicle for which they don't provide reasonable service for in a populated area such as the ORegon coast. Every Ram 1500 around 30K miles cast iron exhaust manifold failure bolts brakes and/ or manifold cracks causing exhaust leak higher toxins in the air without going through the Cadillac converter. Ram been scamming people for decades, costing over $1,000 to resurface and/or replaced manifold gasket and bolts have to extract the broken bolts since the nut broke off the bolts

Upon acceleration from stop, and even while driving at speeds between 30 & 40 mph, the vehicle shifts from Drive to Neutral and displays "Shift to P..." on the display. This occurs repeatedly. You have to stop the vehicle and shift to Park then back to Drive. But it keeps occurring, over and over. It first occurred when I pulled out into traffic, the vehicle shifted to N and I had absolutely NO EXCELLERATION with oncoming traffic behind me. I immediately put on my hazard lights and steered towards the curb to attempt to get out of the way... traffic behind me was able to slow and avoid collision but this is an extremely dangerous issue.

My [XXX] son was driving his Ram 1500 on a country road and the he started hearing a clunking noise and his tires locked up. Luckily he is experienced in driving bigger vehicles and was able to control the vehicle to not wreck it. We had his vehicle towed to repair shop. Less than a day later the repair shop called to tell us that the vehicles transmission needed to be replaced as well as the rear differential. He said the rear diff issue is what caused the transmission to go out. Ive contacted multiple dealerships in hopes to have this replaced for free of charge since Ram had a recall with this same issue. 2019 RAM classic with significant wobble /vibration during highway driving between 40 and 80 at cruising speed. Will do similar shaking during acceleration, but not consistently. We have replaced the rims, all 4 tires (the two rear wheels have been replaced twice), the vehicle has been balanced twice, once high speed and once with all 4 wheels. the tires have been balanced as well. The vehicle has gone to several different repair shops trying to troubleshoot the problem. Documents are available upon request.

I was driving on busy road and truck completely shut down with a warning message”shifter autocorrect active” all power to truck died out and truck cruised to a slow speed and then abruptly jumped into park.i would restart it, drive few feet and it did it again. A few times it drove for a relatively longer distance but same message would come up and truck shut down in motion. Police had me take it off the road as i was causing very unsafe situations for myself and for all others around me. Had truck towed home, Unhooked battery once car got home to help reset it, took it out again and exactly same thing. I own a 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie quad cab 4x2. In two different instances while accelerating from a stop or near stop the transmission dropped completely out of gear. The message "Return shifter to park(P) then shift to desired gear" has come up. On one of those occasions I was pulling out onto a main road. Luckily for me there was no traffic at that moment as I made it into the lane before the transmission dropped out. My truck just rolled 80K miles. This is a major life safety issue and has taken away my confidence in my vehicle.

The location of the shifter knob, in close proximity to the fan control knob, poses a danger while driving the vehicle. I was driving at 70mph on the freeway and went to turn down the fan when I accidentally turned the shifter and the truck went into neutral. As a result, I was nearly rear-ended as I wasn’t able to accelerate.

Gauge cluster stopped working, no speedometer, mileage, turn signal indicators etc. all black. Extreme safety risk. 4WD will not engage, possibly associated.

The 4wd has never worked in my 2019 Ram 1500. I bought the truck in November of the same year, I tried to engage the 4wd with the snow that year and it would not engage. Notification showed service 4wd, I took it to a ram dealer in South Carolina where I worked out of town they had it for two days and they informed me they didn't know what was wrong with it. I then took it to the dealer at home they kept it overnight and installed a new actuator. It engaged the first time and then back to service 4wd. This time was different it stayed in neutral, I turned the emergency brake on and turned the truck off. I have had my Dodge Ram 1500 in the shop from November 2022 through September 2023 five different times for defective camshafts vvt solenoids oil control valves. Issues still persist due to faulty machined parts from the manufacturer.

On 1/13/2024 driving at around 35 mph truck stalls with no waring light displayed on dash and no indication of anything being wrong prior to stalling. I was able to pull off safely to which truck auto shifted into park when I came to complete stop. The truck restarted fine but when I went to put in gear truck would stall. After around 5-10 I was able to to get truck in gear and drive for awhile. Stopped for lunch that day and when returned started truck and when I put in gear truck would stall again. Vehicle 4WD functionality. Vehicle fails to engage 4wd system. If 4wd does get engaged and used, it will say “4wd overheated” and “service 4wd system” and no longer engage 4wd. Working on getting this to the dealer but seems to be a fairly common issue with these trucks. Multiple individuals complaining of the same issues.

I had serval problems with the electrical and shifter all of the sudden all lights wipers all instruments turn on shifter wants to stop and cars turns off while driving on highway front brakes vibrate . I know there’s a defect with the electrical and is very dangerous because I looked up problems like mines and other people say they had the same issue with dodge ram 1500 . It happens unexpectedly while driving sometimes . The last time I almost had an accident because it happen nearly a the light was changing to red that was very frightening.

On December 30, 2023, my 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie edition suddenly and unexpectedly popped out of gear into neutral while driving approx. 35 mph. The vehicle engine was on, however, no power was being applied to the drive train as the vehicle was in Neutral. The engine revved fine, just no power to the drive train. Wheel bearings

The transmission shifts extremely rough mainly when in traffic. There are times that you try to accelerate but the truck doesn’t shift fast enough or correctly. The dealership said it was a software update but it didn’t fix the problem.

Sometimes it shifts into neutral while vehicle is in operation, on its own. Sometimes when cold (not reached normal operating temperature, the transmission sticks in fourth gear while down shifting. I can feel and hear the downshift from 4th to first while I am decelerating. This causes the transmission to jump into neutral. The "DANGER" is when the transmission jumps into neutral while I am in the intersection or about to merge onto a busy roadway. I have to come to a complete stop (in an intersection or merge lane), shift the truck into park, then to drive. I have taken my truck to the dealer four times since 2019 regarding this matter. The dealer claims there are no codes, unable to recreate scenario, hence no repair made.

I have an oil cooler leak, a radiator leaking coolant , transmission running high. I have 110k miles on my truck and do routine maintenance. I’m worried about an engine fire or cracked block soon.

When turning to left vehicle will say power steering unavailable and stop working intermittently and the rear end howls.

I had my oil changed and my OIL Pan is rusting out which would be critical when driving and could cause engine harm. I was told that my Warranty just ran out on 8/30/23. However i only have 42,500 miles on the truck. I Have owned over 20 vehicles in my lifetime and i have never had any issue with an oil pan rusting out.... I thought it was aluminum but obviously not.

Vehicle after driving and shutting off, fails to start. Only having an audible click noise. Truck required to be towed to home. Battery provided sufficient voltage and shows to have continuity from starter relay to solenoid. Disconnected the negative battery connector overnight. After sitting unplugged from battery overnight and reconnecting in morning, the truck started 1st attempt, however now has several codes popping up P1DF3, P2111, P2017 and U0402. I believe it is related to the mild-Hybrid (eTorque) setup as this appears to only occur on those models of pickup trucks. Steps to reproduce: - Car sits all day outside my office in Virginia summer heat - Turn on car without A/C so the Start/Stop can engage. - Approach stop light and Start/Stop engages for the duration of the stop - After waiting ~4 minutes for the light to turn, when I release my foot from the brake there is a sharp jolt/lurch and the truck appears to stall or fall out of gear. Defective shifter. Vehicle is automatically shifting in Park while in drive causing vehicle to stop moving while driving, in traffic or at a stop light. Vehicle accelerated and cut off in the middle of an intersection and almost got rear ended because vehicle would not move. When shifting to drive again it immediately switched to park stranded me in the middle of on coming traffic. This is horrific especially if it would happen on an interstate. This happened also at a gas station putting the truck in reverse backed a little bit than automatically shifted to park stranding me in the middle of the parking lot. This is an emissions issue. The exhaust manifold bolts have failed and are failing. This ultimately releases nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, benzene and formaldehyde fumes into the cabin area. Broken exhaust manifold bolts directly causes failed manifold gasket(s). Failed exhaust manifold gaskets causes emissions (nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, benzene and formaldehyde fumes) to be released and to build up in the engine compartment and into the cabin rather then safely through the exhaust system and catalytic converter and out the rear end of the vehicle. This problem has been confirmed by the dealer (documentation forthcoming). This problem was denied warranty repair by the extended warranty purchased at the dealership and by RAM customer service by phone 7/7/23 8:41 am. There were no warning lights or messages. The problem was identified by the dealer technician when inspecting for another unrelated issue.

The vehicle has worn out mechanical components and shakes at highways speeds and the wheels bearing/balljoints are so bad the vehicle swerves all over the road and is nearly impossible to keep under control. I visited the dealer service center and asked for it to be repaired. They answered my call after a week and said they have found nothing severely wrong with the truck and it is ready to be picked up. This is a danger to all drivers on the road also to my girlfriend and I. This is unprofessional and criminal.

The truck intermittently comes out of gear when braking. A bell rings and a message is displayed on the dash instructing the driver to shift the truck into park and then select desired gear. The dealership cannot replicate the problem and has not been able to fix the problem. The truck has been in and out of the dealership for the past year and the problem still exists. I have an active lemon law claim with Ram. They denied the claim stating it is a warrantee matter, but they cannot fix it. I have a call into the Department of Consumer Affairs to initiate the arbitration process. My family and I are afraid to drive the truck due to the safety issue.

Shifting autocorrect to park when driving. The vehicle has to turned off and turned back on in order to work. This is a huge safety hazard as it is shifting on its own especially when I have my toddler in my car. I have taken it to the dealership multiple times in the past year with no fix. When driving at speed and speeding up the transmission can go out of gear and leave the truck unable to accelerate. This has happened on the highway multiple times. Dealership CJDR24 unable to diagnose issue. Has been there twice. First time they said it was battery next time they said it was a transmission recall code that needed to be reset. Issue still remains. It is not a persistent issue but it is dangerous and has almost caused accidents on multiple occasions. To get transmission back in gear vehicle must be put in park or turned off then back on and it can drive normally again.

Code p0850 for the tcm. Transmission would not go in park it happened 3 times on 3/3/2023 and 2 time 3/4/2023 truck would not shutoff due to the issue engine light came on and remains on. Had to set emergency brake so truck wouldn't roll and jump start the following morning because ignition had to stay on after seeing a chunk of snow fall off the transmission about 18"x10"and 6"thick it now shifts to park engine light remains

While driving vehicle comes out of drive and into neutral. The driver has to stop and cycle transmission into park and then back into drive leaving the vehicle in the middle of an intersection with heavy traffic. No warnings or messages pre or post event. Dodge dealership has ran a scan and also drove to recreate and was unsuccessful. There is many people experiencing this issue. Just google it. THIS WILL EVENTUALLY KILL SOMEONE.

I was at a stop sign and when I attempted to cross the intersection my truck started to go but seemed like it lost all power and a warning message popped up on the dash stating to "place truck in park than in gear" after that everything went back to normal, I also had the same thing happened in January. I brought my truck to the dealer and they found and installed a software update that was related to my concerns.

The driver side exhaust manifold is leaking. I have had the passenger side replaced already. That issue occurred around 55,000 miles on my Ram. I am at 80,000 miles now with the driver's side having the same issue. I believe it is a bolt. I can smell exhaust and think this could cause a fire if not corrected. Along with the fire issue, I have noticed a decrease in gas mileage and believe to be experiencing lag or loss of power at times.

The vehicle lost power, and all of the service lights on the dashboard started lighting up, wipers turned on and off by themselves, headlights turned on and off. Most of the messages stated that service was required on AWD, shifter, parking assist, power steering, brakes...etc. The truck wasn't picking up speed and started shaking. At some point, I felt like the brakes were NOT responding. I was 2 minutes away from home, so I drove home and parked it. I found a few other 5th generation Ram owners online with the same issue. However, I just hit 40k miles on the car, and the basic warranty only covers until 30k miles. If this is a common problem, why isn't there a recall to fix the problem before someone crashes their truck, hurt themselves, or hurt someone else. This only adds to the water leaking from the back window problem.

I have already had one mainfold bolt replaced by the dealer 8/6/21 before warranty expired and now I have another defective manifold bolt causing yet another exhaust leak. My vehicle has just over 72000 miles and this is a know issue with Ram and they need to take care of these issues.

Vehicle lost power while driving and received an error message stating please shift truck into to Park to get to desired gear. Had to turn vehicle off while in traffic to get it moving again.

74,000 miles: I left a parking lot the transmission wouldn't shift, check engine light came on, I pulled over, shift knob went to park on its own. I shut off the engine, waited, restarted, shifted to drive, same thing, I repeated the same process. This happened a total of 3 times. 4th attempt I was able to drive normally. I have constantly had issues with the shift know not recognizing park. I have contacted my dealer and I'm told that I'm opening the door to soon. 2019 ram 1500 continually shifts into park while the vehicle is moving. The problem occurs when slowing and the Ram attempts to downshift. The shift occurs when the vehicle speed is slowing below 25 mph. I have had the vehicle serviced for this issue and the dealer cannot solve the issue but “upgraded “ my software for $300 with no resolution. Vehicle powertrain, engine, and electrical systems, including brake, power steering, and dashboard systems completely shut down (were completely 'black'/off) on three separate occasions - two of which occurred while operating the vehicle. The first occurred while driving on a public/local road in early Dec 2022. Although all systems lost power and were unresponsive, I was able to coast the vehicle to the shoulder without impacting moving vehicles or fixed objects. The vehicle was towed to a Ram Service provider where the issue was investigated for approximately 10-days. The reason for mechanical failure could not be determined, however, they replaced the battery and key fob as precautionary measures - partially at my cost.
