What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The AWD module failed after 35000 miles. Dealership said it needed to be replaced. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The failure shut off my collision assist, traction control, AWD, and hill assist. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Unknown, it seems to be a fairly common issue with 2020 Ford Escapes from what I've seen online. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Just the dealership Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Unknown, I had warnings on my dash stating AWD fault service required and soon after began reporting the other errors.

The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who determined that the rear differential was faulty and needed be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V011000 (Power Train). 2020 Has a 8f35 transmission with the same torque converter issues and low speed shudder under 35 same as bulletin 21-2081... ford edge with same transmission ford recommended replacement at 90000 miles didn't offer to even attempt to work on it. No warning lights are on

The AWD module failed after 22,000 miles. This affects the awd and many other options not to work. Trac control, Hill assist, Awd etc. Dealership wont cover due to 3 years. Dealership is fixing with $1160 out of pocket to me. This part is a known issue with Ford and many other complaints have been made.
#11604565 |
My car spontaneously started throwing out Service AdvanceTrac, PowerTrain Malfunction, AWD Fault, Pre-Collision Assist Not Available, and Hill Start Assist warnings. Those all cleared themselves, but the AWD Fault remained. I took it to my local Ford dealer, who replaced the AWD module the same day. The very next day my check engine light came on with the code for the Catalytic Converter and the PowerTrain Catalyst System fell below the efficiency threshold. My car barely has 40,000 miles on it and it is well-maintained. Upon reading some of the other complaints about this year, I see that I am not alone and have read several other complaints explaining the exact same thing that happened with my car. It appears as though there were other 2020 escapes within a certain manufacturing date range that DID qualify for a recall related to these issues, however mine did not for some reason.
#11603515 |
Had new Ford factory transmission installed due to only getting 72000 miles on original trans. New transmission, after being installed, has been deemed defective from the factory so dealer will have to order and install a replacement. Ford 8 speed transmission.

Took car to dealership for separate covered customer satisfaction program involving door weld. door weld was resolved however the dealer stated that some check engine lights came on. after having my car for three weeks they diagnosed it as needing to replace the AWD Module and 2 related updates. It is publicly known by Ford that this issue has occurred in other 2020 Ford Escapes. This was addressed for some 2020 Ford Escapes in their customer service program 21B19. However my VIN did not qualify as it did not meet the manufacture dates. Nevertheless, the problem, vehicle year, and manufacture year are identical and this is not an issue that occurs with normal wear and tear within 30000 miles. The known issues with the 2020 Ford Escape AWD Module should be expanded to cover this.

My car spontaneously began displaying error messages saying that pre-collision assistance, hill start asssitance, vehicle stabilization, and AWD were in error and wouldn’t work. I took it to a Ford dealership and they diagnosed the AWD system as faulty and it will need to be replaced. If continued to be driven without replacing it, the AWD fault would cause the car to not be able to move forward. They were surprised a car this new would need this. Upon further research, I am among hundreds, if not more, of 2020 Escape owners with this problem. This is a widespread safety issue.
#11603119 |
AWD module has failed and per FORD is not covered in replacement cost. Multiple error messages about forward collision, AWB and adaptive cruise control. This module was covered un a previous customer satisfaction program (Customer Satisfaction Program 21B19) and in multiple issues noted in on line forums should be taken up for a recall. Vehicle appears to run more poorly and thus could put myself and passengers at risk for accident. The error shows up every time the vehicle starts up. I see there are over 40 complaints listed here and I am sure there are more.

Different warning lights were coming on in my suv while I was on vacation a couple weeks ago. The lights consist of AWD, Pre-collision assist, traction control and hill assist. The door and window is also broken but that will be fixed for free because of a recall. I’m extremely frustrated because I just got this car in February. Now all this is breaking down at the same time. We did not get the warranty on it because we had to buy a car last minute and couldn’t afford the extra fee. I drive all over because I own a cleaning business. My frustration is that there was a recall on certain vehicles with the same exact issues that my suv is having. So I feel like this is a manufacturing problem. I don’t want to spend a $1000,00 or more if this is in fact a manufacturing issue. Especially...

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Escape. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the AWD and check engine warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the AWD control module. The vehicle was repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to Customer Satisfaction Program: 21B19. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 43,000.

All Wheel Drive module is malfunctioning. AWD needs serviced light came on. Upon further research it appears that AWF modules that were manufactured at the facility where mine was manufactured, were recalled for dates within 2 days of mine being manufactured. Based on internet searches, it seems this has been a frequent issue and Ford will not replace/recall this module within the other recall. My vehicle only has 13,000 miles on it and is 4 years old. This should not be a problem and is going to be a great expense to get fixed. Ford should recall this part as it is a knows consistent issue with the AWD module that was manufactured out of the same facility.

I just bought this car less than 6 months ago, and the other day I had an “AWD Fault Service Required” light come on. Come to find out it’s a bad AWD computer module. I get to searching online and see hundreds of people with the same problem. I am not sure what I’m going to do, but if this is as common of an occurrence as forums lead me to believe it is, someone should look into this as a recall. There is already a recall for this exact problem for this same model of cars built within a specific factory and timeframe. It’s happening to enough people that this umbrella should probably be extended

A clunking noise in the rear at turns to the right starting up from a stop. Local automotive shop diagnosed contaminated rear differential fluid. Changed fluid and told me to contact dealership. Differential should not have the issue at only 30,000 miles. Dealership confirmed issue and recommended TSB 24-2185 be performed at this time. However RDU vent nose part unavailable at this time and had to pay for a special order shipment when it was produced by third party vendor. Did not change fluid and Escape is clunking at right and left turns now and feels unsafe to drive as I herk and jerk down the road.

The vehicle is flashing warning lights for Powertrain Failure, AWD System Failure, Collision-Assist Failure, AdvanceTrac Failure, Hill-Assist Failure. Apparently, these are all linked to a faulty AWD module. Ford is claiming that it is not covered by their Powertrain warranty even though it is a major component of that system. This issue is becoming more and more prevalent with Ford customers. This item should be a recall. Please assist us in making that happen.

2020 Escape has a turn style shifter that becomes stuck in park and will not shift into gear on hot summer days making the car inoperable leaving unsuspecting drivers stranded. The issue happens almost weekly to daily to my vehicle. The dealership has found no cause for this issue as when the shifter is acting up and is inoperable, the dealership has no opening to serivce vehicle.
#11593748 |
Premature failure of valve cover gasket and transmission. Valve cover gasket allowing oil to seep in to spark plug “tubes” causing misfires. Transmission showing excessive wear for only 72000 miles.
#11593534 |
last year in the summer of 2023 I first experienced my 2020 Ford Escape not being able to shift from park to reverse, neutral, or drive. It was a very hot day and my car had sat idle for 8 hours in the sun while I was working. I got into my vehicle and started the car. I tried to turn the dial type shifter to drive and it was locked. I immediately looked online on my phone to see if this was something like turning the wheel one way and then the other and it would unlock. I found some people said to press on the brake and release because maybe it had not completely disengaged when the vehicle was turned off, but that did not work. I then found something else that said to to engage the parking brake and then disengage, that did not work either. Now...

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the message "Service All-Wheel Drive" remained displayed. The vehicle was taken to the local mechanic who diagnosed that the All-Wheel Drive Module was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was later driven to the local dealer who replaced the All-Wheel Drive Module and vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 74,700.

Took in the vehicle to be inspected and Ford said the AWD module isn't working. It states my AWD is off and not functioning.
#11592008 |
I am getting the following error messages: awd fault service required/ service AdvanceTrac /pre collision assist not available / hill assist not available/ AWD off / powertrain malfunction/ reduced power.
#11591924 |
The transmission of the car makes a loud rattling noise only on cold starts, almost sounds like metal is rubbing together. Car has 63K miles, and drives fine but will make rattling noise at cold start, typically around 1.3K RPM. Once the car has ran for a bit in idle, the RPM drops to around 1K and the noise subsides. There are no warning lamps and the vehicles has not been inspected. I am unaware how my safety could be at risk, the problem seems to only be during the cold start for now. This problem has been reported by the NHTSA in SSM 49411, but I wanted to notify that I have had a similar issue with the same vehicle.
#11588501 |
I was driving home and all error lights came on. When I got home, my ford app said transmission failure, awd failure, hill start failure and pre collision failure. All of these are necessary to not get in an accident. I called the ford dealer and brought the car in for diagnosis ($200). Ford called a few hours later and said the AWD module is bad and needs to be replaced ($1k).My ford only has 36k miles over 4 years and I’m the original owner. The vehicle has never been off road or abused in anyway. I see hundreds of people online complaining about this module going bad at such a short time. This should be a recall since ford knew about it with the 2020 vehicles but won’t replace with their 5year 60k mile power train warranty. It’s actually affecting my cars performance as I cannot use AWD and...

Ford service center diagnosed a failed AWD module. It was only examined by the Ford techs at the dealership where I bought it. Total price was approx $1200 which was covered by extended warranty plan, but I had to pay a $250 deductible. The mileage when the warning illuminated was approx 38,900. While driving, AWD OFF was illuminated on dash. As well as POWERTRAIN FAULT, HILL START ASSIST OFF, PRE-COLLISION ASSIST UNAVAILABLE, SERVICE ADVANCETRAC, AND SEE MANUAL. I was put at risk because all of my safety features seemed to be failing. I have heard many others having the same issue all with low miles.(40,000 or less) I believe this component requires a recall because I had only owned the car 3 weeks when this happened. I havent even made a payment on it yet!!
#11585658 |
At 25,768 miles, multiple warning messages appeared including: service advanced track, 4WD fault, no cruise control ability, no pre-collision assist, hill side assist fault, and no traction control. BC self test was performed by a mechanic. The vehicle was purchased 3 months prior at the same dealership that performed the test. Results: No communication with AWD module found. The issue was AWD module faulty. AWD module was replaced and reprogrammed. The issue was not covered under the power train warranty (available for 5 years, 40,000 miles) due to the problem relating to the electrical system.

AWD control module needs to be replaced at nearly $1000. Just replaced the emissions sensor for $500. Both are known issues and one was a recall but not for my VIN.

All wheel drive control module controls the powertrain but is apparently not covered under powertrain warranty. Very expensive repair on a relatively new vehicle.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle began to hesitate and jerk. The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the failure persisted. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the transmission, requiring the transmission to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 118,000. The VIN was not available.

While driving home from work the car stopped reacting to the gas pedal and I was going fast enough to coast into a parking lot. Had I been on the bridge or turnpike it could have been a disaster.

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Escape. The contact stated that she had parked the vehicle in the driveway and went to manually open the garage door to reverse inside the garage. The contact stated that while opening the garage door, the vehicle started rolling back. The contact stated that the front driver's side door knocked her down, and the front driver's side tire rolled up her right foot. The vehicle crashed into the contacts residential garage. The contact stated that she sustained a crushing wound on the heel of her right foot that was 7 inches long and 1 inch wide. The contact stated that her right heel blew wide open and the tendons and muscles were detached from the bone. The contact stated that she underwent surgery and 3 months of basic bed rest. The vehicle was taken to an autobody repair shop, where it was repaired. The...

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while the vehicle was in reverse, the vehicle made a howling noise coming from the rear end of the vehicle. The vehicle was also emitting a clicking noise when the brake pedal was depressed to shift out of park(P). The failure was intermittent. The contact's spouse, an independent mechanic, stated that it seemed as though there might have been a failure with the parking brake. The vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the dealer was unable to determine the cause of the howling noise while the vehicle was shifted into reverse due to not being able to duplicate the sound. The dealer stated that the clicking noise while depressing the brake pedal was diagnosed as a parking brake failure. The vehicle had not been repaired due to not being covered under recall or warranty. The manufacturer was made...

The vehicle without warning lost power as I was driving in the middle of a road way. The engine stayed running but only revs. No check engine lights or messages. Thankfully I was headed down hill and was able to coast through the intersection that was turning yellow and had just turned red as I coasted through. I coasted and pulled over to a side street and proceeded to put vehicle in park and shut it off. I then tried to start and put it back into drive. Nothing. I shut it off again waited 10 minutes then started and it started driving. Then lost all ability to give power to the wheels. Vehicle was taken to the dealership where they said it had metal in the transmission fluid. The vehicle was scheduled to have a fluid exchange for the transmission the next day. They couldn't get it out of...

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Escape. The contact stated that while attempting to reverse, the gear shifter was shifted into reverse(R), but the vehicle failed to respond. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the electronic selectable one-way clutch (SOWC), was replaced; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to a second dealer, Schicker Ford of St. Louis (3300 S Kingshighway Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63139) where the electronic selectable one-way clutch (SOWC) was replaced a second time; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the second dealer, where it was determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 52,189.

I've started to get a message on my dashboard - AWD fault. This car was built in 2020 with less than 25,000 miles and no accidents. A search on Ford forums revealed multiple complaints about 2020 Ford Escapes with the same issue. The dealerships in each incident said there was no recall, and prices for repairs ranged from $900 to $1100. Our Ford dealership said there was no recall, and we would have to pay for a repair to a AWD module on a 4 year old car.
#11559046 |
The warning lights came on and I suddenly did not have all wheel drive. This happened while driving in the snow with my 2 year old son in the vehicle with me. I took it to Horn Ford in Brillion, WI and they sad it’s a bad all wheel drive module and that even though it’s part of the drivetrain, it’s not covered under warranty. They said it’ll be covered after my transmission blows up! On top of that, they had my car for two days and only fixed two out of four recalls and charged me $135 for “diagnostics”! Ford put my child and me at risk and could not care less. This needs to be corrected before someone dies.
#11556772 |
The AWD module malfunctioned and had faults. Issue was confirmed by dealer with no explanation and had no cause for failure. AWD fault and Service AdvanceTrac warnings appeared and reappeared each time the vehicle was turned on. Vehicle could only use front wheel drive and cruise control was also affected. The dealer kept the malfunctioning module so unknown if it will be inspected.

AWD module needs to be replaced in my 2020 Ford Escape. Seen a bunch of other posts online with people having the same thing. Happened at 32K miles. Have a series of messages every time I start car relating to this issue: Service Advance Trac, AWD Fault Service Required, AWD Off, See Manual, Hill Start Assist Not Available, Pre-Collision Assist Not Available.
#11553846 |
The AWD module failed-- it is at the dealer for repair now. Several errors popped-- pre-collision, hill assist, AWD, traction control all turned off The dealer determined the AWD module needed to be replaced. The error codes popped up and I brought it to the dealer within three days. Ford states this part is not covered under the "bumper to bumper" warranty, which expired four months ago. It is not part of the powertrain warranty, which is still active. The same make/model/year produced at the same plant had a Customer Satisfaction Program to replace this part, but it only covered a very small window of dates.

My AWD module went out and several features of my vehicle were in-operable. I have read that this is a common problem with this vehicle, and it tends to happen around the same mileage. The failure of this module makes the pre-collision assistance fail
#11547045 |
I have paid for Ford to look into a AWD error code that came up and they had stated that my PTU has failed and they did a fix for that but I still have the same issue. The vehicle deactivates AWD and defaults to 2 wheel drive until Ford can get it in
#11546288 |
Out of no where I got codes for a AWD system fault, pre collision fault and hill start and traction assist fault.

The contact's wife owns a 2020 Ford Escape. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the message "Maintenance 2" was displayed. The contact stated that he saw white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. Additionally, the contact stated that the message "Transmission Not in Park" was displayed. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that there was an oil leak, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.

Vehicle cannot engage park. Shift sys fault appears and throws a code that states that park may not be available. Ford has refused to help.

Transmission dropped out of gear on the highway and would not accelerate. Had to coast to the side. Indicator stated shift system fault. Turned off and restarted and it worked again going forward but there was no reverse gear. Code states “ The powertrain control system has detected one of the transmission clutches did not apply within the expected time as expected. Some transmission gears may not being available resulting in delayed or harsh shifts into another gear. Additional alerts that may provide additional information may accompany this alert.” and also “ The powertrain control system has detected one of the transmission shift solenoids is not responding as expected or is stuck in the off position. Some transmission gears may not being available resulting in delayed or harsh shifts into another gear. Additional alerts that may provide additional information may accompany this alert.” The vehicle has not been inspected yet...
