I am filing this report due to a serious and costly engine failure in my 2017 Ford Edge Titanium with the 2.0L EcoBoost engine. My vehicle has always been properly maintained and I recently experienced pre-mature engine issues at only 93,000 miles. The issue began with rough starts, hovering RPMs, and eventually led to a complete engine failure. My mechanic diagnosed the problem as coolant intrusion into the engine, which I have since learned is a known issue covered by Ford’s Technical Service Bulletin TSB 19-2208. It appears most people begin experiencing this issue at 50,000-90,000 miles. The cost to replace the engine is between $8,000 and $9,000, and my vehicle is no longer under warranty. I am still paying off this car, which makes this financially devastating — and this failure occurred well before the end of a reasonable engine lifespan. Bought this car a couple of years ago. In the past 6 months we have had to have brakes/rotors fixed ($650), spark plugs, etc ($780). It's had issues with not starting after fueling up with gas. Basically needs a engine rebuild. Recommended we call Ford dealership because it has had several reports filed for this reason. The vehicle was at an independent service center where it sat for over three weeks while they worked hard trying to find the issues. Finally they advised me to get a second opinion through Ford which I did for over $300 for the same inspection. They have given me an outrageous estimate of over $16,000 to repair the issues. Engine and Cooling Failure on my 2017 Ford Edge. Transmission operating poorly and check engine light was on. Went to dealer for service, and was told faulty gasket is leading to coolant intrusion into the transmission. Was told needed to replace engine at cost of $10,500. This is a widespread issue on this model yet Ford refuses to recall it and fix it, and this despite the fact that they recalled other models with the same engine. An 8-year old car should not have to be junked. The NHTSA needs to do the right thing and force Ford to recall this model and replace the engine.

I had purchased the 8 year warranty plan for my 2017 Ford Edge. The week before it expired, I took it in for a oil change and final check. The mileage was only 42,542 miles. Brakes were replaced under warranty and all looked good. Literally the next time we drove it after getting home, at about 55 mph the check engine light came on, motive power was lost, and the brakes and gas pedal lost power. After pumping the brake we got it stopped safely and then towed to the dealer. There are approximately 78,000 miles on the car. Recently, a rough start caused the "check engine" light to come on. After taking it to a repair shop, the mechanic discovered there was coolant seeping into the #1 cylinder. Research confirmed that it was a known issue associated with a 'porous block' created during the casting process. Ford has known about this issue with the 2.0 In-line 4 eco-boost engine for over a decade and has not recalled the engine or offered to make any sort of restitution. Coolant Intrusion on EcoBoost 2.0L engine, cylinders #2 and #3 due to head gasket failure. Failure is due to open deck coolant system on engine re-design which was done on 2017- 2019 model years. The engine redesign (to get more horsepower) required more cooling so they "channeled" coolant between the cylinders leaving very little space for head gasket to seal. The only "fix" (see their TSBs) is to replace the entire long block on the vehicle. This replacement long block is not the same design, but a instead is a new one which has been re-engineered specifically because of the faulty design mentioned above. The cost quoted to do this through the Ford dealer that sold the car when it was new is $7,608.12. The diagnostic test was performed by Jones Automotive, Germantown TN. Since the vehicle isn't drivable, it has not been taken to a Ford dealership. What I've ended up with in a mixture oil and coolant with a sludge consistency filtering throughout the engine which is now a non-operational vehicle with ~ $5,000 payoff. As far as safety is concerned, this vehicle was in danger of the engine catching fire. The only warning received was the engine overheating which prompted me to take it our ship to determine the problem.

It started to have unexplained coolant loss and a check engine light indicating a misfires in cylinders #2 and #3. The car was taken to a local Ford dealer who diagnosed it with "COOLANT INTRUSION CYLINDER #2" and they indicated that it was a known issue with this engine but Ford had not issued a recall. They also indicated that the defect creates a safety risk, because the lack of coolant created by the leaks causes overheating and can result in the cylinder head cracking, total engine failure, and/or engine fires. Upon inspection, it was determined coolant was leaking into a cylinder causing corrosion and intrusion of the coolant into the engine. The car had 111,426 miles with no warranty. I had the engine replaced at a cost of $5710. This was a known problem by Ford causing them to issue Technical Safety Bulletin 19-2208, but did not notify the consumers. There are several class action suits for this identical issue. The recent Ford recall of the 2.0 eco boost engine in other models should have also included the 2017 Ford Edge. Ford sold this vehicle knowing the coolant intrusion would cause critical engine failure while driving leading to possible catastrophic wrecks.

I bought the car used from a Ford Dealer in October 2024. The car had a clean CARFAX and solid maintenance history and just under 40,000 miles at time of purchase.
