I have a 2017 Ford Edge with the famous coolant intrusion problem that has now caused me to need a new engine and Ford won't do anything to help me. This has been a known problem due to a defect in the way the engine was made that allows coolant to enter the cylinders. Now I am out $5,000 due to needing a new engine. Ford issued a TSB for this problem but no actual recall, leaving thousands of people with costly repair bills.

Coolant intrusion into cylinder 2 causing misfire in cylinder 2 and subsequent P0302 error code. Coolant level drops in reservoir and engine begins to overheat unless turned off.
#11716647 |
TSB 19-2349 Oil and Coolant leaked into engine cylinders causing the car to blow white smoke, runs rough and now the long block engine needs to be replaced.
#11716828 |
On appx 2/1/2026, when accelerating over 50mph to enter the highway, the car started to violently shake would not accelerate any higher. This caused my daughter to be a danger on the highway at such a low speed and she nearly was hit by a semi. The check engine line turned on when this occurred and then went off when the vehicle was turned off so we continued to drive it and it happened 2 more times so we brought it to be looked at. I took it to a local shop that had just changed the oil, thinking it was related, however they ran the diagnostic code(s) and found that there is an open service bulletin at Ford for this issue. The diagnostic codes were P0301 and P0316 for misfires in the cylinders. They are aware of the issue which is causing coolant to leak into the cylinder and...

Coolant leaked into the engine cylinders. This issue leads to severe overheating, head gasket failures, and total engine failure. I've been quoted almost $8,000 to replace engine due to Ford's design flaw.
#11712340 |
Engine caused coolant to leak into the cylinders. Cracked engine block. Had to completely replace engine. Called Ford Assist and they said my car is one year too old to help with any sort of repairs. I was stranded without and car (my means to get to work) and heavily relied on other people. I had to finance the repairs on high interest loans, which caused undue stress and financial hardship.
#11709390 |
Engine failure issue. Car started to rough idle, and started to lose power due to misfires. The poor performance placed myself and Family at risk of becoming a hazard to ourselves and other drivers because the car could encounter a moving situation that could not be avoided, and the loss of ability to move away from a dangerous situation. While addressing the problem it was found that there was coolant intrusion in the cylinders due to cracks developing in the poorly designed engine block. The check Engine light did signal indication of a misfire and bad ignition. I investigated the problem and discovered that Ford is aware of the issue and has issued TSB-2229, replace engine at cost to owner, due to Fords poor design.

My car is only 44,000 miles yet I got 2 engine light codes on. Presence of coolant in the engine cylinders, white exhaust smoke and a runs rough especially during the first start of the day. Engine diagnostic at Ford dealership shows that it is a coolant intrusion. Dealership states that it requires an entire engine replacement despite my car being in good condition otherwise with proper maintenance.

The vehicle has low mileage, but the 3rd cylinder wall has a crack that is causing coolant to be leaked into the engine and therefore, the long block/engine needs to be immediately replaced. This is a major safety hazard which can cause the engine to stop at any time, even while driving on the highway, which a major safety issue and hazard. The certified mechanics say that the long block part was manufactured too thin and is causing major safety and mechanical problems and shared Ford needs to recall and replace the long block as this is a common problem and major safety issue with this vehicle as research has shown.
#11705352 |
Check engine light started coming on for a cylinder 3 misfire at around 105,000 miles. Brought to mechanic to diagnose. Replaced ignition coils and spark plugs. The check engine light came on again with the same issue. Coolant also was running low. Brought to Ford dealership who scoped the number 3 cylinder. Dealership Confirmed that coolant was intruding into the engine and that a new engine block would be required as a remedy. This is a well known defect on Ford Ecoboost engines that they have issued recalls for in the past, albeit for smaller liter engines and not the 2.0

Over heating due to coolant leaking through the head gasket.
#11704991 |
The coolant is leaking into the motor causing an overheating issue that cuts power to the engine while driving. This is a large problem that may go unreported but Ford did change the design years down the road to help fix the issue but will not take responsibility.

Vehicle: 2017 Ford Edge Issue: Sudden loss of power / Transmission failure Safety Concern: Loss of acceleration at highway speeds Complaint Description: I am submitting this complaint due to a serious safety issue with my 2017 Ford Edge. While driving at various speeds, the vehicle began hesitating when I pressed the accelerator. While traveling on the highway, the car accelerated to approximately 60 mph and then suddenly dropped to around 40 mph, despite continued pressure on the accelerator pedal. The check engine light illuminated. I immediately took the vehicle to the dealership for inspection and was informed that the transmission had failed and required replacement. This is a major safety concern. The unexpected and uncontrollable reduction in speed while traveling on a highway created a dangerous driving situation for me and other motorists. A sudden loss of power like this can easily lead to rear-end collisions and serious accidents, especially...

2017 Ford Edge Titanium (VIN: [XXX] ) suffered catastrophic engine failure at 81,571 miles in September 2025 due to coolant intrusion into cylinders caused by cracked intake manifold - a known Ford manufacturing defect. Total repair cost: $9,034.66 for complete long-block engine replacement at Crain Buick GMC, Conway, AR. KNOWN DEFECT: Ford documented this problem in TSBs 19-2208, 19-2346, and 22-2229 (dated 2019-2022) affecting 2015-2018 Edge with 2.0L EcoBoost engines. Design flaw in engine block sealing surface allows coolant to leak into cylinders, causing misfires, white smoke, and complete engine failure. Ford redesigned engine for later models, confirming the defect. FORD PROVIDED ASSISTANCE FOR IDENTICAL DEFECT IN OTHER ENGINES: Ford issued Customer Satisfaction Program 21N12 providing 7 years/84,000 miles no-cost repairs for 1.5L engines with identical coolant intrusion problem, but provided NO assistance for 2.0L engines. TIMING: My warranty expired February 2025. Engine failed September 2025 (only 7 months later)...

Bought my car used with 100000 miles. Was maintained of every 3000 miles by a ford dealer before i bought it. When i got it and as i was driving home there was a check engine light that popped up for a misfire in cylinder 3 (p0303) and no coolant in the reservoir. I topped up the coolant and since then ive had to refill my coolant ever 3 or 4 days. Its going back to the dealership i got it from on hoping the warranty they provided covers the work.

Faulty fuel pump, vehicle stops while driving and rolls backwards
#11689954 |
Vehicle went in for check engine light, no issues with how the car runs, low coolant. Vehicle was pressure tested and we were told there was a crack in the cylinder and that the engine would need to be completely replaced. This will cost upwards of 10k. Per my research this is a known ticket and huge defect that Ford knows about. We asked if we could get e engine replaced under the goodwill repair program through ford and we were denied there as well.

Coolant leaking into the cylinders caused engine overheating and ultimately, engine failure.
#11686917 |
Engine leaking coolant into cylinders. Creating risk of smoke and fire, known issue with for per TSB 19-2208
#11685057 |
Check engine light came on intermittantly and would turn off. When it stayed on I took it into the dealer who diagnosed leak of coolant into number 3 cylinder, requiring a new engine. This happened at just above 65,000 miles. Car is starting and driving rough, some erratic acceleration and is worse every day.

Bought this car, 100,000 miles on it, and 2 days after My check engine light comes on and coil 2 is misfiring, i get new coils and plugs, and 3 hours later it starts it again, I end up taking it to my local ford dealership and they discovered I need a new engine due to a crack in my long block and coolant getting in coil 2...I just brought a car that needs 8000 dollars of work done. I wish I knew what to do. This has been awful. Sometimes it decides to misfire at red lights or even driving down the road, ford should fix this issue
#11682138 |
The check engine light turned on. It was diagnosed at Auto Zone as 'cylinder 2 not firing correctly' and the possibility of a bad sparkplug. At the Ford dealership (2 days later), it was diagnosed as a 'coolant intrusion'; leaking coolant into the engine. The engine currently works but the leak will cause engine failure. The Ford dealership service agent told me that this model Edge as well as the Escort with the same engine has had this same issue repeatedly. The engine has less than 70,000 miles and is no longer under warranty. Through researching this issue on my own, many people (especially on Reddit) have identified the same issue with these Ford cars ranging from 60,000-70,000 miles. The dealership is offering $2,000 check/buy back or a replacement of an engine at a value of $8, 350.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford Edge. While the contact's daughter was driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine overheated. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed water in the oil pan. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the contact stated that the head gasket was replaced two years prior. In addition, the thermostat was replaced a year prior. The manufacturer was made aware of the failur,e and a case was filed. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 111,000.

common engine failure on the 2.0l of cylinder cracking allowing coolant to leak into engine and misfire. Engine filled with coolant and wrecked the motor. Ford has done multiple engine swaps costing customers $8,000 for a defective block they changed in the newer years. I feel we should not pay for their mistake!

Answers to specific questions above: *Head gasket, coolant, engine failure *A running engine/coolant/and head gaskets are valuable to a vehicle to operate *Confirmed by an independent service center *Not inspected by manufacturer, police, or insurance. When I got the first notification of a coolant warning, I drove it immediately to the independent service center *The check engine light came on, then the coolant is low light, to which I then took it in for service I purchased this vehicle in December 2024 from a private party with approximately 56,000 miles on it, which is well within what should be considered reasonable, reliable use for a Ford vehicle. To date, there are approximately 61,000 miles on the vehicle. In August 2025, I was forced to replace the motor due to a head gasket and coolant issues. The work was completed at a reputable local auto shop, Auto Aces, at a total...

Engine stated missing when starting. Engine came on and stayed on. Took to ford certified mechanic and he replaced 4 fuel injectors, received car back and drove for a day then same thing happened again. Took back to mechanic and he found coolant in the engine. He said it was a know. Issue of Radiator leaking into engine.

Coolant intrusion into cylinder block requiring engine replacement. (I unfortunately own TWO 2017 Ford Edge Titanium vehicles with the defective 2.0 L EcoBoost engine). I have had to replace the engine in BOTH vehicles which failed withing 10,000 miles of one another. This engine failed at 105,000 miles. The vehicle has been routinely maintained and the failure occured with no warning. The company is aware of the defect and no longer supports customers. There is a TSB issued which identifies the issue (22-2229). A Ford Edge forum on Facebook reveals that a decent percentage of the membership with this era model have experienced the same failure, with the same lack of support from the manufacturer.

Known coolant intrusion issue in 15-18 Ford Edges. Coolant leaks into the cylinders, hard starts, check engine, without a new motor replaced, the engine will explode. This should be a recall since it’s consistent on almost every single edge from the years listed. I had to replace the engine at 88,000 miles. $8,000 of work done for an issue that is known to Ford.
#11680263 |
3 months ago, Engine just stopped while driving. Thankfully traffic was light. Had it been one hour later I would have caused an accident on the freeway. Now just last week, the engine was starting rough and the check engine light came on. Brought it in and found out the coolant was intruding into the cylinders. Engine is ruined. Sounds very common for the failure of head gasket causing coolant leak into cylinders.

While driving at highway speeds the engine suddenly began knocking, white smoke billowing from the car and it came to a stop. No lamps prior to failure. FORD is aware that 2017 Ford Edge vehicles were made with this defect. The dealer has confirmed code PO304 coolant intrusion into cylinder 4 and also determine that the turbo has failed. Failed turbo is also a known manufacturer defect by Ford. The safety issue is the dramatic loss of speed on the highway without warning while emitting a blinding and distracting smoke screen to other drivers.

Coolant intrusion into the cylinder block requiring new engine. Issue is known to manufacturer but Company no longer offers any support to customers. Dealership confirmed issue with scope showing Crack in cylinder. I maintained the vehicle and did regular fluid checks. Failure occurred with no warning.

The first symptom on my 2017 2.0 L EcoBoost engine with 79,000 miles was a rough start and check engine indicator. The warning light cleared and engine ran better while at operating temp. The symptoms became worse over the next few weeks, when I noticed that there was no heat coming from the heater as the coolant was very low and the engine was overheating. I had difficulty removing the coolant reservoir cap as there was significant vacuum and no coolant showing. When I got the cap off, the coolant boiled up, leaving a small amount in the bottom. I added coolant to make it home and called the local Ford dealer who informed me that there is a service bulletin about coolant leaking into the cylinders and the repair might likely mean an engine replacement. The engine replacement would cost $12000 at the dealer so I brought the car...

My 2017 ford edge, 74,000 miles 2.0 eco boost had a code after hesitating, running rough and having white smoke from exhaust. The check engine light came on and the code was Po302. We replaced the coil pack and the light continued. Brought it to local dealership and they confirmed TSB-22-2229 and needed long block for 12,000$. After much research, for some reason other eco boost cars have had extended warranties but of course not this model. Is this real life? The safety concerns and the cost are outrageous to say the least.

2017 eco boost engine class action lawsuit ,coolant got into the engine
#11677751 |
Loud slashing noises behind the dashboard and check engine light stating misfirecylinder two. Entire engine had to be replaced because of warping and coolant enter intrusion into cylinder two. This has been a known problem for years with Ford on this particular engine and no recall. Ford will not stand behind their engine. The repair shop that we had the new engine replaced has done three Ford engine replacements in the last five months due to the same issue.
#11677515 |
Issues with 2.0 L EcoBoost engine overheating. A mechanic using a camera to investigate revealed coolant intrusion in engine. Mechanic located Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #22-2133 which indicated it was a known problem by Ford and recommended engine replacement at owner's expense. This had to be performed by a Ford dealership so that the engine could be re-programmed using proprietary software. The out-of-pocket cost to replace the engine was $7,559.08, plus $183.00 for the tow to the dealership. The mechanic's shop charged $32.60 to diagnose the problem. This issue also led to simultaneously failure of the transmission which had to be replaced at a cost of $5,999.22.

July 23, 2025 the engine light came on. Called Ford dealer and made appt for July 24 to be checked out. Coolant getting in #2 cylinder, recommended long block replacement for $9859.85. Vehicle has only 83450 miles on it and a known issue by Ford. Called Ford and we can not get any help with replacement.

The contacts son owns a 2017 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while his son was driving approximately 35 MPH, there was a misfire coming from the engine. The check engine warning light illuminated shortly afterwards. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with coolant intrusion into the cylinder head, caused by a blown head gasket. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 55,000.
#11674804 |
At less than 70,000 miles on the engine, a check engine light came on (July 2025). To this point there had been no lights or warnings, but apparently there was coolant intruding into the engine cylinder. This likely had been an ongoing issue but finally created a warning light around 69,000. This design defect created the potential for immediate engine overheating while traveling at highway speeds. A dealer has yet to look at my vehicle but an independent service center diagnosed a blown gasket due to the intrusion. And others with the same engine 2.0L have suffered similar issues (as evidenced by recent June 2025 class action suit).

I am the owner of a 2017 Ford Edge with only 63k miles on it (VIN: [XXX] ), which I purchased from Depaula Ford in July of 2020. This vehicle has experienced significant engine problems consistent with the symptoms described in TSB 19 2346. Specifically, my vehicle has suffered coolant intrusion into the combustion chamber, leading to white smoke from the exhaust, misfires, and a noticeable loss of coolant. After diagnostic inspection at Depaula Ford in Albany, it was confirmed that the engine requires replacement.
