**Incident Summary:** I am reporting an issue with my 2017 Ford Edge with an EcoBoost engine. The vehicle has 39,844 miles on it. The component that failed is the head gasket, which has warped due to coolant intrusion. This issue led to the necessity of a full engine replacement. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. **Safety Concerns:** The malfunction compromised my safety and the safety of others as it led to the car overheating and the check engine light coming on. These symptoms started during the summer. Overheating poses a significant risk, potentially causing engine failure while driving, which could lead to dangerous situations on the road. Moreover, the presence of coolant in the oil and exhaust fumes indicated severe engine damage, which could have resulted in a fire hazard if not addressed promptly. **Problem Reproduction and Confirmation:** The problem has been reproduced and confirmed by an authorized...

The check engine light comes on due to coolant intrusion into the cylinder. The repair is to replace the engine! This issue has been affecting many Fords, resulting in the issuance of a Technical Service Bulletin.
#11640316 |
The vehicle check-engine light is on and it idles rough at startup. Ford dealer inspected and reported coolant had leaked into the engine. This put my family and others at risk as a potential fire hazard due to overheating.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford Edge. The contact stated while the vehicle was idling in the driveway, the temperature gauge was showing that the indicator had raised to HOT, and the message "Engine Coolant over Temperature" was displayed on the instrument cluster. The contact shifted the gear selector into drive(D) and accelerated and the temperature gauge lowered back to the normal engine temperature. The contact stated that the failure also occurred while stopped for a traffic light or traffic sign. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and DTC: P0217 and P1285 were retrieved, showing that there was a coolant leak at the water pump weep hole. The dealer determined that the water pump, timing chain, and other hardware needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 121,122.

Coolant Intrusion issue - this is a known issue subject to a class action lawsuit. My vehicle was textbook - check engine light with accompanying code for a misfire on Cylinder 3. Then it would run rough upon starting. Next, the heater was acting up (on and off). Then billowing white smoke that smells sweet. Coolant reservoir was low, but not empty. Vehicle has 75,000 miles on it and is not drivable without a $7000-$9000 long block replacement due to the risk of fire. Called Ford customer service and was told the TSB did not even apply to my vehicle (as though a known design defect is related to a particular manufacturing facility).

I was driving down the highway at highway speeds (60-70mph), and bunch of lights came up on my dashboard. Primarily, the vehicle was indicating a high temperature issue. Due to this high temperature, the vehicle went into “low power mode”, to conserve heat, which caused my gas pedal to respond slowly, and leaving me feeling very unsafe. I have since gotten the car inspected and repaired. The independent service center (Christian Brothers - Fossil Creek), identified that the issue was a coolant intrusion into 2 cylinders that effectively ruined the engine. I had to have a whole engine replacement. Ford is not offering any support, even though the NHTSA has reported it as a known problem with this engine type (bulletin 19-2346)
#11637068 |
2L EcoBoost Engine was diagnosed as having porosity issues (tiny holes throughout engine which causes the coolant to leak into engine). The dealership informed me that it is a manufacturer defect and the only fix is to drop a new engine into the vehicle. My manufacturer warranty has obviously expired, but there are known recalls issued on a large number of their newer vehicles for the exact same issue I'm experiencing, as well as a civil suit filed against them in the state of California for the exact year and model of my car for the same issue. I contacted Ford Consumer Affairs and was told they are unwilling to do anything to fix their error as the warranty has expired. While I understand there is no current warranty, if a recall is issued they are responsible for fixing/replacing the faulty part(s) regardless of an existing warranty. Given that this...

Coolant intrusion into the engine block due to a manufacturing defect in the cylinder walls. Needs engine replacement. I have had this car since 12/8/2020. No extended warranty. I have 60,000 miles on this 2017 Ford Edge and it needs an $8,000.00 engine. I still owe $11,000.00 on this vehicle. If the engine isn't repaired, it could overheat shutting down the motor and could cause extreme danger to the driver and even resulting in a fatality. We as consumers need your help in creating a recall on these vehicles. There are thousands of us that have lost so much money to repairs that should not be happening due to faulty engine blocks.

I am writing to bring to your attention a serious issue I have encountered with my Ford vehicle, which I believe may indicate a broader safety concern that warrants investigation. Below is a detailed account of the problem: On November 27, 2024, my vehicle’s check engine light came on. I took it to O’Reilly Auto Parts, where the diagnostic code recommended replacing the spark plugs and coils due to a misfire in cylinder #2. Following their recommendation, I took the vehicle to Deer Valley Car Care, where the spark plugs were replaced. The check engine light turned off afterward. However, just one week later, the check engine light came on again, and the vehicle began to overheat. I had the vehicle towed back to Deer Valley Car Care, where they diagnosed coolant in cylinder #2. They advised me to take the vehicle to Bell Ford, as they informed me that...

Check engine light has been on and white smoke coming from exhaust and engine Been in for recall repairs several times. Steering wheel feels unstable when driving Suspension is unreliable. This is a very dangerous vehicle to be driving and needs to be recalled for these Known issues.

Took my car to my mechanic said that coolant was draining into my 2.0 ecoboost engine in cylinder 4 causing misfire, white smoke to come out of my pipes, sweet antifreeze smell in the cabin. Have to constantly dump coolant into the car so that it doesn't over heat.when i start the car in the morning it acts as if the car is going to die if I don't hit the gas. Contacted ford, they said it was my problem. I bought the car a year ago. It started at about 72000 miles.
#11634738 |
My wife was driving the car and had no heat. Once she got home we realized that the car was out of coolant. This has been found to be the known issue with this car. Coolant intrusion into the cylinder. This has the potential to overheat causing someone to pull over and get hit on the highway. Especially with the snow and low visibility conditions I’m glad my wife was able to make it home without being injured. This car is only a 2017 with around 122,000 miles. I’m writing this to hopefully save someone else in the future.

I am reporting a cracked cylinder block in my 2017 Ford edge with only 64000 miles and now not warranted for repair. I was informed by Ford Motor dealership it would cost me 10,000 dollars for entire engine replacement. I had two more payments before a total payoff on this vehicle.

Engine overheating warning light, Rough idling, Check engine light, all from …coolant leak from the engine block on my 2017 Ford Edge "coolant intrusion" in the 2.0L EcoBoost engines. I am looking forward to joining Ford EcoBoost class action lawsuit. Fir ford edge 2017

My car had a check engine light on and I took it to the dealership to get it checked out and they said that coolant had leaked into cylinder 2 causing misfire and the whole engine needed replaced. The ford rep said it’s a common issue know with that specific engine. Coolant is very flammable and could’ve very easily started an engine fire.
#11630711 |
There is a crack in the block that is causing coolant to leak into the cylinder. This is a very common issue with these motors and should have been recalled a long time ago
#11629729 |
I own a 2017 Ford Edge. I noticed white smoke and check engine light came on. I took the vehicle to a dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed with coolant intrusion and engine failure. I was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. Failure was approximately 80,000 There are thousands of ford cars reported with this engine issue: Other affected models include the 2015-2018 Edge, 2017-2019 Escape, and 2017-2019 Lincoln MKC and MKZ I am worried on engine overheating, misfires and car stops suddenly in traffic and case a crash, and even fires I see Ford Fusion engines have been recalled I don't understand why the other models are not recalled also.
#11629410 |
It appears that just 85000 miles this engine is starting to consume engine coolant. I am afraid this is going to lead to major engine repair costs.
#11629468 |
Brought car with 54k miles. Went to dealer 1 month before warranty ended. I was told there were specific problems which I fixed. I later went back a few months later and was told it’s the battery. The Check engine light came back on a month later. I was told Coolant is leaking into the engine requiring you to need new engine. It’s dangerous because car won’t go over 20 mph. Even if you push gas you can’t go faster. Smoke coming out of exhaust. Smell is toxic. There is no explanation as to why this happens.

Check engine light came on with code P0302. Brought it to the Ford dealership. They diagnosed and determined coolant is leaking into an engine cylinder. This required a new engine, according to the dealership, and they replaced it under extended warranty. This happened at 40,000 miles on the vehicle.
#11627526 |
Vehicle started overheating and showing low coolant levels, repeated refills and no external leaks indicated a separate problem. White exhaust and engine warning light indicated possible coolant intrusion. Took to local dealer who confirmed coolant intrusion.
#11627568 |
Headgasket issue, coolant leaking into engine. Therefore CEL on with missfire on cylinder 3. Had multiple repairs done before issue was found, current quote for head gasket repair is 3.700 USD. Ford issued a repair note but hasn't recalled this knows safety concern for this mark and model (earlier models with this issue have been recalled to mely knowledge).

Hello, I have reported this issue before and am still looking for help. My 2017 ford edge 2.0 liter Ecoboost engine leaked coolant into the cylinders causing engine failure. Ford is unwilling to recall ford edge engines from 2015 - 2019 ? It is my understanding that "Dive Brief Ford recalls over 90K vehicles for Ecoboost engine failures The recalled vehicles include six 2021-2022 Ford and Lincoln models equipped with either the 2.7L or 3.0L version of the engines." Published Sept. 5, 2024 My reason for including this article is, I am not reading there is a safety hazard, simply that there can be catastrophic engine damage. Well, I would think that the damage caused by coolant leaking into cylinders causes catastrophic engine damage, to the point of having to replace my engine. I can include numerous letters from people on the internet experiencing same problem. Please help us with...

The contact owns a 2017 Ford Edge. The contact stated that the heating system was inoperable. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic at the gas station, where the contact was informed that there was no coolant in the coolant reservoir. The mechanic added coolant to the vehicle; however, the failure reoccurred. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the mechanic, where it was diagnosed with coolant intrusion into cylinder #3. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, where the engine was being taken apart for further diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 54,790.

engine light came on. took to ford dealer , They stated that antifreeze was leaking in to cylinder. and that I needed a new engine. and that I should not be driving it because it could stall out or could catch fire. Ford has other ford engines doing the same problems . because of a seal . that they {ford} have been aware of. Codes from dealers code readers are reading number 4 cylinder messed up.

On 2 occasions my 2017 Edge car would not start. Check Engine light came on and I took it to my local mechanic. I was told blown gasket and coolant in engine. Vehicle has been running perfectly with only 62,000 miles. Warranty has expired so now I have to pay $9,000 for new engine. Ford needs to recognize this has occurred repeatedly in the Ford Edge and proceed with a recall. Ridiculous that this would happen in a well maintained vehicle with low mileage.

Putting the car in drive and would drive a few feet suddenly, all the panel lights ( check engine, abs, hazard control, electric parking brake,) literally every light on the panel would turn on and engine would stall causing the steering to become hard to control. This happened 3 times within a 2 week span then, I brought it into dealership and was told my coolant had leaked into my cylinders causing the engine to become ruined and that’s why I was having the problems with the engine and steering. My car has only 59000 miles.

Our 2017 Ford Edge had 67,000 miles and it developed a cracked block. We needed to replace the long block engine. It turns out Ford issued a Technical Service Bulletin number 19-2346 in 2019. This bulletin applies to all Ford Edges produced from 2015 - 2018 and other Ford models. Even though this problem was experienced by thousands of these vehicles the owners were never advised. This is a major engine defect that could cause many dangerous conditions including engine fires. The cost of Ford's recommendation to fix this problem was well over $10,000. This engine failure was a clear defect that Ford should have and still needs to issue a recall and to take full responsibility. I know you have received similar complaints from many Ford owners with the same problem. Please take action to cause this to happen and order Ford to compensate those already affected by this...

On [XXX], my check engine light came on, followed by random shaking vibration after starting up the vehicle. I received code P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected. Autozone recommended to replace the ignition coil or spark plug. I replaced the ignition coil first and noticed there were oil inside of the hole and on the old ignition coil. I took my vehicle to Lafontaine Ford Lansing dealership in Lansing, Michigan. I was informed the oil was caused by valve cover gasket leaking. The cylinder misfire was caused due to coolant leaking into the cylinders. Two cylinders had already contained coolant. I was told this will result in engine failure and overheating eventually if I continue to drive the vehicle. Ford suggested to replace the long block and quoted me $11, 372.45 for the repair. My warranty expired at 100,000 miles. At the time of this incident, I was at 115,577 miles....

I have the coolant intrusion leak. My vehicle's engine light is on for misfires, and it overheats.
#11622592 |
I took my 2017 Ford Edge to a Ford dealer in town to have a diagnostic evaluation due to the "check engine" light coming up. The service associate notified me that the engine block needed to be replace due to coolant intrusion into the cylinders. Please see TSB 19-2208 for reference. There were no issues with the vehicle prior to the check engine light coming on. The date this occurred was 10-16-2024.

Check engine light came on in June. Had oil change at the dealership and check engine light did not come on until July. Dealership said a coolant intrusion in cylinder 2 was causing misfire and a new engine was recommended. This is a 7 year old car with 47K miles. Engine cost was 11+K and I contacted Ford Motor Co. for assistance on August 12, 2024. After numerous phone calls and forwarding documentation Ford says they will reimburse some of the cost. This process has taken over 60 days for me to continue to follow up, (return calls promised, but never happened), request to speak with a supervisor, explain the situation repeatedly to the same "Concern Team" member. Ford Motor Co. knows that engine failure or worse is possible, but does not take responsibility, This should be a MAJOR recall!!!!

The contact owns a 2017 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine overheated. The contact refilled the coolant reservoir, and the vehicle was driven to the residence. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a coolant intrusion and engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
#11619430 |
Service engine light came on, it was taken to an independent service center. The code was a "misfire" to cylinder 3. When the spark plug was removed, it was wet with coolant. This means coolant is in my engine which can cause irreparable damage to my engine. It is over $9k for me to fix. This is a devastating design flaw. Also, the backup camera freezes, and the backup warning sytem stops when the camera freezes, which can cause an accident
