Unknown, but believe that is it coolant leak related as the vehicle has been losing coolant. We have been needing to fill with coolant. The fan was running occasionally. The vehicle has no power. This is dangerous because the vehicle could have shut off while driving. The vehicle has not yet been seen by the dealership but will been getting an appointment to do so. There were no warning lights or any other warnings.
Car had to be towed to dealer due to engine failure. The car was diagnosed with coolant leaks into two cylinders, which could have caused a fire. The engine failure happened as I was driving the vehicle, putting my safety and the safety of others at risk. The problem has been confirmed by a Ford dealer. Error codes for misfire appeared right before. Vehicle was inspected shortly before malfunction and was told everything was great with the vehicle.
I was told by the Suburban Ford of Ferndale dealer that I have a coolant intrusion problem in the engine. The repair is $13,000. I was advised that there could be engine fire, failure, etc. Prior to my taking the vehicle to the dealer, the check engine light illuminated, then the temperature gage climbed to indicate overheating.
Engine failure at 80,000 miles. Crack between #3 and #4 cylinders causing a rough idle, loss of coolant and check engine light for a #4 cylinder misfire.

I have a 2016 Fusion SE w/ 1.5 ecoboost. I have to check and add coolant every time it's driven. It shows cylinder 2 misfire. It loses power and runs very rough. The check engine light turns on and will turn off without being reset. It might stay off a day or two but then turns back on. While driving down the highway last Friday it started chugging and jerking and i lost power making it difficult to steer. The safety issue I see is the sudden loss of power while driving 55 with cars behind me and also coming at me. My check engine light turned on and was flashing as this happened. Ive never seen it flash before. I had it to a mechanic about a year ago because the check engine light. This is when i was informed about the tsb regarding the coolant issue. I called...
I was driving the vehicle couple of weeks ago and I began to notice that I did not have any power when pressing on the brake and that the engine was beginning to buckle I came to a stop and it continued to run very roughly I had trouble driving a half mile home when I got into driveway a great deal of white smoke was coming out of the back of it vehicle I was able to restart it the next day but the same thing happened I took it to my mechanic and he confirmed that the engine is having radiator fluid leaked into the cylinders which is a very common problem I find what the echo engines at Ford produced for this vehicle and others when my mechanic called a Ford expert he was told that it's just best to replace the engine since the repairing the...
1.5 turbo engine is having a coolant intrusion. had miss fire code and all systems of the recall/service bulletin 22-2134 and was not included in a recall. available to be looked at risk of engine failure diagnosis was done at a independent shop has not been looked at by manufacture started about 4 months ago had a few codes including engine miss fire but replace several components plugs, coils and fuel injectors. had to top off coolant. engine light would come on interment. and engine would run rough but will turn off
The contact's mother owns a 2016 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while his mother was driving 45 MPH, the vehicle inadvertently decelerated to 5 MPH. The low coolant warning light was illuminated. The contact's mother pulled over and parked the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with coolant intrusion into the cylinders, and it was determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: 21-2269 (Low Coolant, White Exhaust Smoke, And/or Illuminated MIL); however, the vehicle was not covered under the TSB. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000.
Coolant leaking into engine
The engine failed as coolant leaked into cylinder 3 causing a misfire/malfunction. The check engine light came on intermittently along with an alert that said the coolant was over temperature, a week prior to the failure. I then took the vehicle into Tires Plus on Merle Hay Road in Des Moines Iowa where they did a full fuel system check and replaced the spark plug. At the time of taking it in, the warning lights mentioned above were not on. 3 days later the check engine light came on and wouldn’t go off. The other warning light was still popping up intermittently. I then scheduled another appointment with tires plus to check out the car again. Unfortunately 4 days later I was driving the vehicle and all of the sudden the vehicle wouldn’t accelerate properly. The engine was failing. I had the vehicle towed to West Side Auto Pros in...
There is a very common problem with the fusions on coolant intruding into the engine. This problem needs to get fixed as it is a Ford problem.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that on two occasions while the vehicle was parked, the check engine, ABS, parking brake, traction on/off, and power train warning lights illuminated. Additionally, the steering wheel became firm. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the electronic power steering module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 165,000.
I am writing to file a formal complaint regarding my 2016 Ford Fusion Hybrid, which I purchased in late June 2024. Despite the ongoing issues with my vehicle, it does not appear on the NHTSA recall list, even though many other Ford owners are experiencing similar problems. Recently, I encountered severe symptoms, including a persistent coolant leak and a puff of white smoke from the tailpipe. Initially, the dealership diagnosed the issue as a simple battery problem related to a cylinder 4 misfire. Following their advice, I spent nearly $500 on a new battery and diagnostic fees. Unfortunately, after driving the car, the engine light reappeared, indicating that the initial diagnosis was insufficient. Upon further inspection, the technician found a puddle of coolant on top of piston 4, which suggests a significant internal problem. This situation mirrors complaints from other Ford owners regarding their EcoBoost engines, even though my hybrid...
Engine replaced under recall in 2021 due to coolant intrusion issue. Replaced with similar faulty engine. This is a possible fire hazard. Ford will do NOTHING. It's unacceptable that an 8 year-old car needs a third engine. Worst service EVER. Putting my daughter's life at risk

Coolant intrusion..
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was able to restart however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the electronic throttle body had failed, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the battery had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, however the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the electronic throttle body had failed, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHSTA Hotline for assistance. The failure...
Engine started to misfire at 70k miles, took to a shop and had to get an engine replaced. As a college student, a $7,000 bill put me behind in school. This is a common issue on the 1.5 and 2.0 ecoboost engine and Ford knows it's a problem, hints the engine redesign in 2019.
Ford has multiple bulletins for 2016 Fusion - EcoBoost Engine. Ford dealer did not address any of the issues upon numerous service visits. Despite engine light being on. Suffered catastrophic failure of engine resulting in loss of power while driving.
The car locked in Neutral but the gear shift is locked in Park. The bushel broke, which was a recall on my make and model but does not show when I search for recalls on my vehicle.
According to the Ford dealership, I am missing a piece of a gasket which is causing coolant issues. I was told that there was a flaw with the engine design on my vehicle wherein instead of repairing/replacing the gasket, an entire engine is needed- making my vehicle a total loss now. When questioned if this was the result of anything I did or could have prevented, I was informed that this was not anything I caused or could be avoided as Ford created a faulty engine design.
I have a coolant intrusion on cylinder number three. It is a Ford defect. It should be Under recall
The rear camera works when it want the transmission to sound and make sudden movements
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the coolant warning light illuminated, and the engine temperature became elevated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic; however, the contact stated that after repairing the vehicle, the failure persisted. The vehicle was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was advised to take the vehicle to the dealer for assistance. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The contact was informed that the repair was not covered under Technical Service Bulletin: 16-0150. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.
Had a coolant leak which further damaged my whole engine. i need a new one now after only having my car for 2 years.
Engine failure, water intrusion, they issued a recall for 2013 - 2018 1.5l and 2.0l, but not my vehicle. It's doing what they recalled. I have a appointment to get checked out and have recalls completed. There is a lot of people with this issue and no recall for their vehicle.
Internal coolant leak in cylinders.
I was driving on the interstate when smoke started from the rear of my car and the engine started sputtering. the vehicle started to slow down in heavy traffic. I was caught in the traffic and could not get off the road, the temperature gauge suddenly moved to the red on the gauge and I could not see the back of my vehicle making it dangerous to pull off the interstate. II had my grandsons with me making this worse. I had the car towed to my fathers garage where he then did a compression test on all four cylinders and found #4 cylinder to be very low reading compared to the other 3 cylinders as well as a pressure test of the radiator which showed a large leak off. I had no warning or messages when this happened
The contact's girlfriend owns a 2016 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while his girlfriend was reversing, the front wheels seized, and the vehicle was shaking. The vehicle then lost motive power. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who determined that there was coolant intrusion into the engine and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 147,000.
2016 Fusion Titanium has the 2.0L Ecoboost engine with the coolant intrusion issue. This is a known issue with both Ford and the NHTSA, but after being diagnosed by a ford dealership, Ford Motor Co. will not provide any assist because it is not listed on any TSB or does not have an active recall. The models that are listed are the Edge, Focus, MKZ, and the Fusion, but Fusion models start at 2017 on the TSB. This is not accurate information because the exact same engine that is used in the Focus/Edge models and year range is used in the 2016 Fusion.
Misfire #3 cylinder, coolant loss with no external signs of coolant leak. White smoke out exhaust when driving. Overheating
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine seized. The contact stated that the failure had occurred two times since July of 2023. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with coolant intrusion and engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact was made aware of Customer Satisfaction Program: 21N12 (Short Block Replacement After Coolant Intrusion); however, the vehicle was not included. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
There is a " design flaw" with the vehicle where coolant leaks into the cylinder heads and you have to replace the whole engine. I have read about it in the Internet when my check engine light came on and gave me cylinder 2 misfire code.I started the car and the check engine light was off. I tried to get to work that morning and the car shut off on the middle of Interstate 81 with no warning. It was a very dangerous situation where I got stuck until it came to a complete stop and turn it back on. White smoke poured out of the tail pipe, I went home. I spoke with a Ford representative who said it is a design flaw in this engine and the whole thing needs to be replaced, with engines starting at $5,000 plus 4 days labor. He advised that the problem could...
Coolant leaked into a cylinder due to a failed head gasket at 61,000 miles. Ford replaced head gasket, but the issue is due to poorly manufactured engine, and I had the same issue starting again at 99,000 miles. Ford refuses to fix engine since it is out of warranty, but the issue is due to poor manufacturing, not customer negligence.
Component failure: Engine -- Catastrophic engine failure due to coolant leakage onto the engine block. EcoBoost engine. Dealership confirmation that car engine will need full replacement - car essentially scrap metal without new engine. At the time of this failure car had approximately 40,000 miles odometer read total on it and maintenance was up to date. Personal safety - I was driving the car on a Freeway with other vehicles at approximately 65 mph and the entire car began to shudder and I lost the ability to accelerate. The road was on an uphill trajectory and I was in the middle lane - I had to navigate my vehicle to the right hand lane and off the freeway at the next exit - I and others were at high risk of a collision due to the severity and sudden failure of the engine while on a busy road. Dealer confirmation:...
My car has about 120k miles on it. The issue is that the coolant leakes into the cylinders. Tried replacing cylinders but problem came back. Dealership says the engine needs repair. The safety issue I had was I was driving on the hwy at about 60. The car suddenly went from 60 to 30. If a car had been behind me I would have been hurt. The manufacturer ford will not pay. I have seen many of this exact same issues on your website. This IS a safety issue. What can you do?
My ecoboost Ford Engine in my 2016 Fusion leaks coolant into my 1, 3 and 4 cylinders, over heated, smoke coming out of exhaust, using coolant. I took it to the Ford dealer to have it checked out when all of a sudden while driving the red temp light went off and my check engine light started blinking with a warning light saying critical temperature and I had to pull off side of highway, they said it needs a new motor, he also said it was common for this size engine to have issues, Ford had been dealing with that it was a design flaw............yet they won't fix it free or recall it. they want $8500 for a new engine, which I can't afford, so a car I own and owe on just sits undriveable. He said they offered an extended warranty to replace the short block on 2017 -2019...
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine coolant over temperature warning light illuminated. The contact stopped the vehicle and checked the coolant level. The contact stated that the coolant level was sufficient. The contact proceeded to drive the vehicle to the intended destination. The contact stated that when the speed increased above 20 MPH, the vehicle jerked violently. The engine overheated and then seized. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with engine failure due to coolant intrusion into the cylinders. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was made aware of the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,500.
Coolant leaking into engine, causing low engine coolant levels, and affecting performance. Ongoing problem for a while, officially diagnosed on 6/21/2024.
I started the vehicle and smelled ash. As I drove away from home at very low speed in my neighborhood, I started to notice white smoke which gradually increased. I immediately parked the car. There was no signs of leaks under the vehicle (but it has extensive underbody covesr). There was moisture and fluid droplets coming from the exhaust pipes. I started the vehicle remotely to view it from the rear and witnessed white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipes, then immediately shut it off. I had it towed to my mechanic who checked the vehicle and noted no issues with the coolant combustion or engine pressure. I had it towed to another shop which replaced the turbo last year, and they checked it for turbo issues. They noted that the engine is dumping coolant into the exhaust system, and that this is an issue know to Ford.
Coolant intrusion into cylinder(s): My vehicle suddenly overheated while I was traveling on a highway that had stretches of ongoing construction and no shoulder. While attempting to reach a portion of the highway with a shoulder, my car went into "limp" mode. I had to shut the vehicle off and wait for it to cool. After about an hour I was able to have someone bring me coolant and I was able to restart my vehicle and get to a safe location. My car continues to overheat whenever I try to accelerate on a highway, leaving me in a position where I am trying to pull my car to the shoulder without causing an accident. There is white smoke coming from my exhaust, my check engine light comes on, and I am losing coolant, although no leaks can be found. My car has ALL symptoms listed under Ford's Technical Service...
Started with a check engine code misfire in cylinder 3. Took it to a shop for them to say I needed a new spark plug and coil. Replaced the parts, and still had the code. Kept driving the car and then started having rough idling, white exhaust smoke, and stalling. Upon further research noticed I was missing coolant but the mechanic couldn’t find the leak. Continued driving the car, experiencing trouble accelerating, stalling, and white exhaust smoke. Replaced fuel injectors. Up until one day I went to start the vehicle and it would crank but not turn over. Had it towed to a mechanic who said they couldn’t explain why I had no spark. Then to another mechanic who said I have coolant leaking into my cylinder 3 that will require engine replacement. This is a known issue with fords with the same engine. Addressed ford and they said there...
This car has a coolant leak failure where coolant has leaked into the engine and showing no signs of a visible leak. This is exactly the same failure mode as all of the ford fusion recalls with the same engine but for whatever reason this VIN was not included in the recall. I have filed a complaint with Ford #02160862 but they state there is nothing they can do. I have reviewed my options with the dealership and they said that Ford doesn’t even offer remanufactured engines for this vehicle because they all experience the same coolant issue. This statement alone shows that Ford is aware of the issue but not doing anything about it. Replacement with a brand new engine quoted at $11k is the only path forward.
As me and my daughter had been out all day on the way home the coolant light comes on it’s overheating so we stop and waited bout 15 minutes started home again same thing happened then the car started misfiring checked coolant it was low put some in then in a couple days coolant was gone again took to shop to look for leak was informed motor was going bad never had issues out car till coolant started leaking looked it up that was one of ford biggest problems with the ford fusion but no recall has been stated for this problem so I would b careful of the coolant systems
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer for several recall repairs. The contact stated that the recall repairs were performed; however, while driving at approximately 40 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated, and the contact observed that the coolant was empty. The contact refilled the coolant, however, the failure recurred, and the contact refilled the coolant several times. The contact stated that no leak was found, however, the motor oil was an orange color. The contact stated that while driving the vehicle misfired and white smoke came out from the exhaust. The dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact discovered the Technical Service Bulletin 19-2139; however, it was unknown if the contact's VIN was included. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 133,000.
