2020 FORD ESCAPE Structurebody Problems

Left driver's side door is popping and gets stuck open sometimes. Vehicle mileage is only 33,505.

Driver's side door hinge has failed. Per staff at two separate dealerships, a "cup" or where the end of hinge attaches within the door has broken loose due to failed spot welds. Staff at both dealerships claim this is a common occurrence. Ford refuses to participate in the repair even though staff indicates it should be a recall event. Concerned door hinge will either jam thereby not allowing ingress / egress or will shatter window as parts appear to be moving inside body of door.

Drivers Side door Welds broke inside door. And door doesn't lock. Door check broke and window goes down less than half way. Bought it in 2021 with 14, 000 miles now has 30,000 Went to my dealership and they said Ford would give me 1000.00 towards repairs leaving me with a balance of 1500. This should be a recall.

About 3 weeks ago now I opened my driver door and heard a loud cranking followed by a poo, the arm bar weld on the door just broke, had to shut the door from the outside and as a result I don't have control over my driver side window and all the power locks in the vehicle are shot. In addition to this my electrical is going crazy, I have the dash lights set to off but when I remove key or open door all the lights come on and I have to click the button back and forth to get the lights to shut off. This has resulted in a dead battery once for not catching it acting up. Sheet metal piece attached to CHECK ARM ATTACHMENT(PN LJ6Z-7823552-B)detached. 5 spot welds failed. See TSB [XXX]. Door would not close. David McDavid Ford wanted $31000 to replace door. The spot welds on the interior door assembly for the check arm broke off. Causing damage to my power window motor. And many other components. Car is at 50,000 miles. Not high wear. The welds are poorly done and ford is making me buy a new door as a result of their error.

hello the driver door makes a loud clicking sound when opening all the way

Out of nowhere my front driver side door started making this awful, loud clanking sound whenever I would open or close it. Took it to the mechanic I usually go to and they said that the "door check broke off the door because the spot weld failed" and that I would have to call a Body Shop. Called the dealership and they said that it is a well known and well documented issue with the year, make and model of my vehicle (2020 Ford Escape), but so sorry I would have to pay appr. $2600 to replace the door.

Door stop on both the driver side as well as the passenger side have broke off making it hard to actually open and close the door. As of 11/16/2023 the window is also stuck due to the door stop damaging the motor. After searching the Internet this is a very widespread issue when I took it to the dealership they said since it was out of warranty it wouldn't be covered. I don't believe this is anything but bad workmanship because the weld apparently breaks as low as 8000 miles. Well within the warranty period.

Driver's door hinges failed causing the door to swing open unexpectedly while I was trying to exit. Pulled both shoulders while trying to control it. Orthopedic surgeon says I need rotator cuff surgery - he suspects the injury was due to the door failure.

Driver side door weld broke allowing door to possibly open while driving

My driver door started making a loud cranking sound out of the blue when opening and closing the door. After several days, it became clear that the door hinge/catch was no longer secured and was loose. This was not the result of a gist of wind forcefully blowing the door open or something like that; it just broke on its own. Now the door swings wildly when opening and the window won’t roll all the way down. My vehicle was just a few months out of warranty so Ford won’t offer any assistance for fixing the problem. I have not yet repaired it because they say the whole door needs to be replaced and, at this time, I can’t afford the expense.

The drivers front door began making a popping sound as the door opened and closed. By the next day the door began to have trouble closing fully. I noticed the weld points had broken where the door check/limiter attached to the door. It sounds like the same issue as the NHTSA investigation PE23013. In order to fully close the door the door had to be disabled and the broken part removed.

Driver side door will not close tight. Will sometime open while driving on highway

When opened front driver’s side door, heard creaking, rattling, and pop. Now door will not close as well as problems with the window not working in that door! The frame on car is also loose due to bad door pulling on the frame. I’m concerned door may open when driving. Ford dealership will not pay due to the fact warranty expired April 2023 with only 33,000 miles on vehicle. An inspection by an independent service center confirms the issue and estimates a $2,400.00 cost of repairs. Inspector indicates poor spot welding and rivets in check arm defective. Insurance will not cover any expenses since it is not a result of a collision!! There was no warning messages indicating any issue. Door noises were heard on a Saturday (11/11/2023) and on Sunday (11/12/2023) door popped and couldn’t be closed’

Per the dealership the driver side door hinge is failing. It also has caused the window track to bind that resulted in window breakage. The door hinge failure is growing worse with time and I'm afraid the door may come loose at some point. The hinge problem first appeared around December 2022.

The front driver's side door is making a loud popping noise when opening and closing the door. We have not yet taken the car to our local dealership yet, but have spoken with them over the phone and their body shop has confirmed that this sounds like an issue we've identified in online forums, which poses a significant safety risk, as the door may open while the car is moving. We will be taking the car in for a formal diagnostic next week. There are no warning indicators of the issue, just the noise, which has started suddenly over the past week.

Front side driver’s door starting making popping noises on Saturday. By Sunday of the same week only a day later the door made a crunching and breaking noise when opening, now the door has to be forced closed and the window will only go down about 4 inches.

I have only had my car for three years and it is well taken care of, but the door suddenly started popping. The same day, my door became difficult to open and extremely hard to close once I got it open. I contacted Ford Corporate the next day. I was told my car was out of warranty because I have 38981 miles. The only thing that was covered under the 5 year warranty in regards to safety would be the seat belts and the airbags. I said, "Ford doesn't think that the car door being able to open or close in the case of an emergency is a safety issue?!?" The chat operator said she could open a case for Ford to review the issue. The driver side door makes a cracking sound when opening and closing and doesn’t shut correctly. Feels unsafe to be driving it around because I’m worried about door popping out at anytime.

Loud popping noise when opening driver side door, feels like the door is starting to slip, at times have trouble closing, now the window when rolled down will not roll back up. Popping, cracking noise started 3+ months ago, have call into dealership at this time. Not able to use the window at all now and not sure the door will stay continue to be usable.

Driver side door hinge/weld breaks. The metal pops, makes a loud sound, door then has to be forced shut. Due to this the window and lock does not work properly. It goes down particularly then stops. Was taken to New Brighton Ford and spoke with Dan who diagnosed the problem. Was told needed new door. The car was purchased brand new from Freeway Ford in October 2020. Was told no warranty and extended warranty does not cover body.

The drivers side door - the weld on the arm has fractured. Causing a loud clunking noise every time the door is opened or closed. This 'break' has caused the window to only be able to roll down about 6 inches. Also, because of the break, the interior lights don't recognize that the door is closed and will stay on as if there is a door open. When called local Ford Dealership, I was advised it is a common problem and the whole door needed to be replaced. A weld in the driver's side door assembly has failed. I am concerned that the door may inadvertently open while driving. The problem has been confirmed by a dealer. While 360 miles away from home, the drivers side door made a popping noise, the window and controls in the door would not work, the window cracked and the door would not work properly. The window would not operate and remained halfway down cracked and broken, the rearview mirrors would not operate. I went to a dealership and was told that this was a recurring problem with this particular vehicle and that the door hinge welds had broken. The only warning I got was a popping noise inside of the door.

This issue affects the driver's door (left-front). The weld spots for the door dampening device within the frame of the door have failed. Prior to this failure the door would make three loud popping noises with each full opening and full closing of the door. This continued until all three weld points on this dampening devise have completely failed. Now the door is very difficult to open/close.

Drivers door has a problem and closes on the driver it won’t stay open. The strap that holds the door open is broken due to a manufacturing defect. Window will not open due to things out of alignment inside the door.

Drivers side door has become unwelded. Started as a popping sound and now the door is getting harder to close, the window does not roll down.

My driver side door began making a grinding/creaking noise when opening. It was rather alarming as it was loud and extremly noticibale everytime I would open AND close my door. At one point, I had opened my door while doing errands and I could not actually push the door closed without some physical force. Now the door makes a more hollow creaking sound while closing and opening the door. Recently, my driver side window has since malfunctioned (does not go down). I can push the button for it to go down, but it only moves two inches before it stops completly. I use my vvehcile to communte to and from work and to transport my children to school and back. The welds are breaking on the driver's side door. The hinge pops when the door is opened and is getting worse. The door feels like it will eventually not close properly (if it even is now).

The front driver's side door began popping and making a loud noise when opening. The the window stopped going down, and now you can hear air coming in through the door, like it is not shut all the way. I took my car to the dealership and they said this is a known problem with the door hinge welds and that the welds are busted. The recommended repair from Ford is replacement of the door and check arm. However, my car is over 36,000 miles, so out of warranty, and therefore the $1900 repair is my responsibility to pay to fix.

Spot welds failed on left side front door check arm. Driver side door was making a loud creaking noise. Window was also affected and could not roll down. Took the car into the dealer thinking this would be covered under the warranty or the extended warranty we purchased when we bought the car new. Dealership discovered the spot welds failed. Was told we've have to replace the door.

Left front door spot welds have failed - known issue with these Escapes and no recall has been made. Ford’s solution is to replace the door and check arm assembly to the tune of way too much money. Door makes loud creaking sound when opening door.

Spot weld in driver's side door check arm has broken and door will intermittently not close. It sounds exactly like problem NHTSA Action Number: PE23013 . Ford dealership has offered ZERO assistance, besides replacing the entire door.

fRONT DOOR CHECK AS BROKEN ON MY 3 YEAR OLD 2020 FORD ESCAPE. DOOR IS DIFFCULT TO OPEN AND WILL NOT OPEN ALL THE WAY UNLESS FORCED.

right side driver door hinge is making noise when opened. It is beginning to not unlock when i am entering car. i have to go to passenger side to unlock. I am unable to operate window (up/down) fully. I have taken this to dealer and have been told by their body department that this is an issue that they have seen in on other escapes. Have been advised to not put window down. They are looking into this and will call me but have heard nothing since - 3 weeks. I am afraid that this door will break loose or that I will be unable to get into my car and be stranded somewhere. Window started going down when requested and stopped halfway down - it would not go back up. Upon inspection it was found the door check had broken loose from the welds and shorted out the harness to cause the window to actuate.

The driver side door started making a loud click on Saturday 10-14-2023. By Monday the 16th I could not open the window. I took it to the Ford dealership and when the service tech tried to close the door it would not close.

Drivers side door started 2 days prior with cracking noise, difficult to close and two days later drivers side door is sagging, unable to open or close and window does not work.
