2014 RAM 1500 Steering Problems

Truck's power steering goes out, I have to restart truck a few times for it to work again. Service Power steering comes on when it's not working. It has not gone out while driving but I am fearful that it will.

Started off with intermittent power steering failure which has now led into complete power steering failure

I was driving down the highway and all of a sudden my power steering went out and the truck jerked, nearly causing me to roll the vehicle. I managed to get it wheel straight enough that I did not wreck. Never been more scared in my life. I got off the highway near a local shop and the mechanic says this is an on going problem with the rack and pinions in my make and model year truck.

Intermittent power steering. Works great then all of a sudden have no steering, then a minute later it’s back working. Other times it is very choppy steering.

While entering the on ramp to the Interstate the electronic power steering failed without warning. It was raining and I narrowly avoided crashing. My mechanic inspected the truck and gave an estimate for repairs,saying he's seen this failure in one other similar truck.

The power steering on my 2014 Ram 1500 seems to be not working at times. The steering can be hard to turn at times and is happening more frequently. I did some research and there have been recalls on this issue but not the 2014 model year. I feel this is an accident waiting to happen as i need my vehicle every day and cannot afford the price tag to make this repair. i have seen on social media that many other have this same problem and something needs to be done about it.

In 2021, my power steering module failed and was inoperable. The power steering module was replaced and now, less than 3x years and < 20,000 miles the power steering module is failing again. In 2021, the power steering failed instantly, without warning. It was almost impossible to steer the car without 'hanging' on the steering wheel as the steering wheel was 'fighting' the driver's input. In 2024, the power steering is failing intermittently. Sometimes turning the steering wheel is easy and tires are responsive, other times the steering wheel appears to 'catch' and resist/fight the driver and then respond sporadically, making steering difficult to predict.

Electric Power Steering has stopped working. The vehicle is very difficult to turn and return to straight. NO warning lamps or service lights appear.

I was driving my 2014 ram in a 25 mph residential area, and went to turn right and wound up hitting the curb on the other side of the street because my truck would not make the full turn. I continued to drive and test the left and right turn, and it refused to turn on either side. There were no warning lights, and no codes were found when tested. I am infuriated that this is not considered recall material. It is extremely dangerous to the driver and anyone else in it's path. I am fortunate enough to not have been driving to work at 60mph. I had been loyal to dodge for years, but that is a thing of the past. I am in the process of buying another vehicle at a very inopportune time.

Our truck kept coming up with check engine, ABS and traction control lights. Come to find out, it is the ABS Module Control that needs to be replaced. In doing research, I have found that there have been numerous complaints on this same issue for years. At what point does it become neglect on Dodge? There have been accidents yet they're continuing to ignore this situation and it's allowed???

Steering stopped working and has error code. Tried resetting and such and still not working

My steering wheel felt like it was stuck and had to force it left or right to change lanes on the expressway at 75 miles per hour. The electric power steering rack is no longer working and it will not turn the wheels. It is still on the vehicle at this time. I could have lost all steering on the highway causing a collision. It has not been looked at by a dealer or independent shop yet. There were no lights or warnings before the incident however the next time I was going to drive the truck the steering wheel wouldn't move and I got a "Service Power Steering" message on the dash.

On 1.28.2024 my 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 R/T lost power steering twice making it nearly impossible to safely steer

Approximately two weeks ago I was driving the truck and exiting off the interstate and at the end of the ramp intended to turn left as I had a green light. As I slowed to safely turn I lost all power steering assistance and ended up jumping the curb and leaving the roadway. Thank God I didn’t hit anyone or damage any property. I was able to fight the steering wheel to make it home. I checked the power steering fluid level and condition of fluid for possible contaminants but found no issue. I remember a recall issued for 2015-2016 Rams for power steering failures. I believe the issue is much wider than initially thought. I have not gotten an estimate on the repairs.

Parked vehicle was fine, next day started truck to back out took both hands to turn wheel. Shut , restarted -no difference . Poage dealer Hannibal mo said 2-3 month back order and questionable. Used old part #, got part weeks later $2413.23 part replaced.

My wife and I were leaving my daughters house Christmas Day when I started my 2014 Ram pickup and it felt like a locked steering column was locked. Shut it off and restarted it but it didn’t respond. I had it towed the next day to the dealer that services my vehicle and the steering control module shorted out which meant the whole steering system has to be replaced at a cost of $3700.00. Plus 3 weeks to get the part. The only good thing is we weren’t driving when it happened. As it turns out no recalls for what I consider a very dangerous condition with absolutely no prior warning. Researched and found out it’s happened to many others while they were driving, but no deaths so Ram doesn’t consider it recall worthy, so how many consumers have to die or get seriously hurt? It has 26540 miles!

Was driving one day while towing a trailer and all of a sudden while making a left turn the power steering went out which caused me to hit an embarkment and damage the front bumper area of my vehicle. My safety was put at risk because of the damage it caused and how difficult the steering became all of a sudden without warning or anything. There weren't any warning prior to the power steering going out, but as soon as it went out a symbol appeared on the dashboard. This was the first time that I have ever seen that symbol. Vehicle hasn't been inspected by anybody other than myself. Checked for recalls and saw that my 2014 wasn't included.

The electronic power steering system started to fail on its own. There was no real reason for this problem. There is full power to system and no blown fuses. It is a gamble as to when the system decides when it wants to work.

My electric steering went out while driving almost causing an accident and the whole unit has to be replaced and it’s around $2900. I’m filing a complaint because I notice online I’m not the only one having this issue that millions of people have had this problem and no recall for my truck to fix this issue. I just had an engine and going to have the power steering put in when it comes in. I had to replace the motor due to the lifters and the mds tearing up my motor. I was driving truck and was taking a right turn and the steering locked up and I almost smashed into car. I stopped truck and backed up and put onto drive and it took all my strength to turn the wheel to the right. Had truck towed and found out that the electronic steering went bad. This problem needs to be looked at because someone is going to get hurt or killed if the steering goes out at higher speeds

While driving during a cold spell. Power steering just went out while negotiating a curve. With the sudden loss of power steering vehicle was partially pulled from the roadway. After stopping and regrouping noticed there is red steering wheel warning light on the cluster. In warm weather there is no issue seems. Only happens in colder weather.

your letter says I can review my report but couldn't find it NHTSA JD#11531515 SO On JULY 7th I started up my truck put it in reverse and had no power steering shut it off and restart still the same could not turn the wheel. I checked the internet someone said check the 2 fuses by battery they were good. had towed on Monday 7-10-23 to Fayetteville dodge they checked it out said I needed a new elect. power rack. they ordered and it took 3 weeks at a total cost $5172.23 out of my pocket. While driving on a busy winding surface street, as I was accelerating from a stop at a traffic light, I received an audible notification chime, accompanied by a red power steering warning light, and a message in the message center to "Service Power Steering." My steering wheel immediately became exceptionally difficult/heavy to turn. I was able to overpower the resistance and maintain vehicle control, but needed to drive much slower than posted speed limits and the flow of traffic to maintain directional control. I was able to drive to a safe location and stop. This is the first instance of this occurring in my vehicle. Power steering is failing. Only doing it intermittently as of now flashing red steering wheel appears for a minute when it first started and goes away and steering is restored took it to dealer and the parts seem to be not readily available and quoted me 3000+ dollars for parts And $1100 for labor and said the whole power steering rack has to be replaced. Could go out completely soon and dealer part not available or aftermarket

Power steering does not work . Red steering wheel symbol on dash board. scan for codes has code c212a-84 sytem voltage .Code c2217-00 Ekectric poer steering module internal shorted. Code 2128-00 ecu -reset recovery occured. There are no electric power steering rack and pinion unit available part # 68628858aa . I ordered the part from My local dealer network I am # 345 on order list of people waiting expected possible December / January 2024. The replacement part # fits Ram 1500 from 2013 thru 2023 no data for 2024 this is a very big problem I can not drive my truck safety with out power steering .The 2015 model year has a recall for the electric power steering unit this should be expanded . There Are to many parts on order for Ram truck no to know there are problems .THank you

Purchased this vehicle new in 2014- after driving it today for about 20 miles it was parked for about two hours at work when I went to leave I noticed that my power steering wasn't working & a message came up on the dash board "Service Power Steering"- Never experienced this problem before or had any warning that something was wrong. I am reading a recall for my car This recall applies to 2013-2019 Ram 1500 trucks equipped with electronic power steering (EPS). Some EPS gear assemblies may have been built with a contaminated circuit card assembly that may short circuit. A short in the control circuit components may result in an intermittent loss of power steering assist.

While parking, the steering locked up. I was unable to turn the steering wheel or the wheels. A mechanic later confirmed the electronic power steering rack and pinion component failed.

The Power Steering went out on my 2014 RAM 1500 at approximately 98,000 miles. The first time this happened, while I was driving at low speeds, the steering wheel would intermittently lock up. I couldn't turn the steering wheel, intermittently. I brought the truck to the RAM dealer for repair. They replaced my Rack & Pinion for $4,000. The second time this happened, slightly less than 1,000 miles after the Rack & Pinion replacement, I couldn't turn the steering wheel at all. Fortunately, I was on my driveway. I had the truck towed to the RAM dealer for warranty repair. If I had been driving and the steering completely locked up, it could have been fatal.

Steering is not safely operable at all You cannot steal the vehicle if you lose your power steering which is electronically controlled some of these units were recalled and they're used on several thousand trucks with this electrical system and you can't get the parts because there's so many being repaired. It's a very expensive part and if steering goes out while you're towing a camper or my case a tractor it could be very dangerous you could put your family at risk and your life at risk and others at risk. This is an ongoing problem with these trucks and it should be addressed and has been somewhat by the manufacturer for just a couple of years for some kind of contamination but it needs to be included on all these models from 13 to 19 if you study you'll see that there is several thousand trucks with steering...

Driving in town, received a "Service Power Steering" light and message, lost power steering. Very difficult to steer afterwards.

On Saturday Sept. 23, 2023 I was driving about 25-30 MPH and the power steering went out. I took the truck to the dealership immediately that day for diagnostics. They said the Power steering rack failed (part #68628858AA) and the part is not available. They said it is on backorder until January 2024 or possibly longer. I picked up the truck that Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2023 to sit in the drive until further notice. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. My safety and others were put at risk when driving and the power steering went out without notice. I was unable to steer the vehicle in a timely manner, or if I needed to swerve quickly would not have been able to do that. As of right now the vehicle has only been inspected by the dealership. Second time in 1 year my power steering has stopped working without warning. Hopefully it will start working again out of nowhere like last time but no guarantee. Luckily I have strong arms but someone older or compromised would not be able to drive this truck. This was a recall however my 2014 was not included in it which is ridiculous because it definitely has the electrical issue stated in the recall pertaining to this issue. Please address as this can be very dangerous for people.
