On 10/17/21 I was driving near my home and during a turn, the steering locked up and the dash read "power steering assist failure". I pulled over, called a tow truck. When they got there, they started it and the steering was working fine. They said to check the power steering fluid. I drove it home, and found it does not have power steering fluid. Ford told me it is not under any recall. It is now operating just fine. Not sure what happened.
While driving the steering wheel will fight you when taking turns. This is a know issue with the Ford Flex. Makes driving sketchy. I will not let my wife drive especially with the kids in the Flex.

The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 235,000.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed with an electric power steering assist failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 15V340000 (Steering). The failure mileage was approximately 125,000.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Flex. The contact stated while making a right turn, the steering wheel malfunctioned and momentarily seized and could not be turned. Moments later the steering wheel would turn however, the steering wheel would shake and vibrate abnormally. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who replaced the entire suspension system, but the failure persisted. The dealer later diagnosed that the steering gear was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the NHTSA campaign number: 15V340000 (Steering). The contact indicated that the vehicle experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 130,000.
Sudden loss of electronic steering assist without warning numerous times on my vehicle. Nearly caused me to get into an accident the other day. Contacting dealer this week. Ford needs to fix this problem.
I was driving down I-285 (Atlanta) with my two daughters in the car and both the “Service Power Steering” and “Service AdvanceTrac” lights came on. About 10-15 min into the drive, it became really hard to turn my steering wheel. We were still about 30 min from our house so I had no choice but to drive very slowly until we could get somewhere safe. While trying to turn off the interstate, my steering wheel completely locked up on me!!! Now my car is at my mother’s house because I couldn’t drive any further in fear of an accident. My mechanic put this car on a computer and no codes showed up. From my understanding there was a recall for this particular issue. WHILE TAKING A SHARP RIGHT TURN ONTO A FREEWAY ONRAMP FROM A STOP AT AN INTERSECTION, THE VEHICLE MADE A "DING" NOTIFICATION SOUND FROM THE DASHBOARD AND POWERFULLY FLUNG MY STEERING WHEEL AGAINST THE WAY I WAS STEERING. IF THERE WAS AN ADJACENT LANE WHERE I WAS DRIVING, THE VEHICLE ABSOLUTELY WOULD HAVE VEERED INTO THE ONCOMING LANE. I WAS ABLE TO OVERPOWER THE STEERING WHEEL AND FORCE THE VEHICLE TO THE SHOULDER, WHERE I NOTICED "POWER STEERING FAULT" DISPLAYED ON THE DASH. I POWERED OFF THE CAR, WAITED A FEW SECONDS, AND POWERED IT BACK ON, AND IT WORKED AFTER THAT.
THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING STOPS WORKING RANDOMLY ALLOWING NO ASSIST UNTIL VEHICLE IS SHUT OFF AND RESTARTED. FORD DOES HAVE A RECALL FOR THIS SAME ISSUE FORD SLIGHTLY OLDER VEHICLES WITH THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING. WHEN THE POWER STEERING FAILURE HAPPENS, VEHICLE IS IN MOTION AND TRYING TO TURN, LOW SPEEDS ONLY SO FAR.

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AND THE FAILURE WAS REMEDIED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V340000 (STEERING). THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE LISTED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 92,349.
WHILE DRIVING, WARNING NOTICE CAME ON SAYING STEERING ASSIST FAULT, THAT VERY MOMENT THE STEERING LOCKED ON ME AND WAS UNABLE TO TURN.
I WAS MAKING A RIGHT TURN ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET AND ALL OF A SUDDEN COULDN'T STEER MY STEERING WHEEL. MY DASH LIT UP LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE AND GAVE ME A POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT MESSAGE. I PULLED OVER AND TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR AND IMMEDIATELY GOT THE POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT MESSAGE AGAIN. IT WAS SCARY AND VERY DANGEROUS. I NOW HAVE NO POWER STEERING AND APPARENTLY MY VEHICLE DOES NOT FALL UNDER THE RECALL. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THERE ARE THOUSANDS HAVING THIS ISSUE. WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEED (< 20 MPH), WITHIN 20 SECONDS OF BEGINNING A TRIP, THE CAR GAVE A WARNING DIALOG (SEE ATTACHED PHOTO) AND THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN. IT TOOK ALL OF MY STRENGTH TO KEEP IT ON THE ROAD. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD SAFELY. AFTER SHUTTING DOWN THE CAR AND RESTARTING IT, THE PROBLEM WAS TEMPORARILY RESOLVED. POWER STEERING WENT OUT IN REVERSE. TURNED VEHICLE OFF AND RESTARTED POWER STEERING CAME BACK. WENT TO FORD GARAGE SOFTWARE AND STEERING HAD TO BE REPLACED. CAR HAS 82K MILES. FORD WOULD NOT COVER THIS UNDER THE RECALL.
DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WHEN SUDDENLY LOST ALL POWER STEERING WITHOUT NOTICE. ALERT SHOWED UP ON DASHBOARD. VERY HARD TO CONTROL ESPECIALLY AT SLOW SPEEDS. BROUGHT TO FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY WILL NOT HONOR THE RECALL SINCE IT DOESNT APPLY TO MY VIN BUT EVERYTHING ELSE THEY RECALLED FOR MATCHES MY CAR.
THE STEERING WENT OUT ONE WEEK AGO. CHECKED ALL THE RECALLS IT MATCHES THE DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM AND MEETS ALL THE TIMELINES BUT WAS SOMEHOW LIKE THE REST NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. DEALER IS PRESENTING ME WITH CHARGES IN EXCESS OF $2000 TO REPAIR. I HAVE TRIED TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE WITH FORD TO NO AVAIL. NO ONE CAN DO ANYTHING. THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND I HAVE TO PICK THE VEHICLE UP TOMORROW. THE STEERING IS NEARLY COMPLETELY GONE.
WHILE I WAS PULLING OUT OF MY WORK PARKING LOT, THE POWER STEERING FAILURE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE STEERING BECAME EXTREMELY HARD TO CONTROL. UNLIKE OLDER VEHICLES WITHOUT POWER STEERING, IT WAS VERY STIFF AND HARD TO CONTROL NO MATTER WHAT SPEED I WAS GOING. WHEN I LOOKED UP THE ISSUE THERE IS AN OPEN RECALL FOR THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AND EVEN IN THE YEAR CAR THAT I HAVE. WHEN I CALLED IN TO GET IT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL THEY SAY THAT MY VIN IS NOT COVERED IN THE RECALL. THEY CLEARLY KNOW THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND IT'S HAPPENING TO MY TYPE OF CAR. WHILE DRIVING I LOST ALL POWER STEERING AND ALMOST LOST CONTROL, THANKFULLY IT DIDN'T HAPPEN WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING WITH THE KIDS. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF. I RESTARTED AND THE POWER STEERING WAS RESTORED. THIS OCCURED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS UNTIL THE POWER STEERING JUST STOPPED WORKING ALL TOGETHER. I CHECKED FOR RECALLS AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL THAT INCLUDED MY MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR FOR THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING ASSIST (RECALL #15S18) I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE SARASOTA FORD DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD UPON CHECK IN THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL. THE RECALL STATES THAT IT COVERS MODEL YEAR 2013 FORD FLEX WITH ANY ENGINE. WITH A KNOWN, EXTREEMLY DANGEROUS ISSUE, I CANT UNDERSTAND HOW MY VEHICLE (EXPIERIENCING THE EXACT ISSUE DESCRIBED) IS NOT COVERED.
ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING FAILURE WHILE HIGHWAY DRIVING BETWEEN 50-55MPH. INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WARNING MESSAGE AT EXACT MOMENT OF FAILURE.
POWER STEERING FAILED WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 70MPH. THANKFULLY I WAS ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY BRING MY VEHICLE TO A STOP WHICH WAS AFTER DRIVING A MILE WITH LITTLE-TO-NO STEERING. OUR MECHANIC INFORMED US THAT THIS IS DEFINITELY A PART OF THE POWER STEERING RECALL ON THE 2013 FORD FLEX, HOWEVER WHEN I PULL MY VIN IT APPEARS THERE ARE NO RECALLS. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN AS I DRIVE 4 CHILDREN IN THIS VEHICLE DAILY. THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT I AS A CONSUMER CAUSED - I PERFORM MY REGULARLY SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE AND THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT I SHOULD HAVE TO FOOT THE BILL FOR.

I AM JUST GLAD MY WIFE WAS NOT DRIVING IT, ESPECIALLY WITH OUR KIDS IN IT. SHE COULD NOT HAVE HANDLED IT AND COULD HAVE BEEN VERY BAD. I SEARCHED RECALLS FOR 2013 FORD FLEX AND DID FIND A RECALL NUMBER, 15S18, THAT PER FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THE DEALERSHIP DOES NOT APPLY TO MY VEHICLE BUT DESCRIBE EXACTLY WHAT MY ISSUE IS. THE REPRESENTATIVE FROM FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE STATED I SHOULD HAVE THE VEHICLE INSPECTED AND IF THIS IS THE ISSUE TO HOLD ON TO MY SERVICE RECEIPTS IN CASE THERE IS A RECALL ISSUED IN THE FUTURE. I KNOW THIS IS A VALID ISSUE THEY ARE JUST UNWILLING TO COVER IT BECAUSE MY VIN IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL.

THE EPASS ELECTRONIC DRIVE BY WIRE STEERING SYSTEM FAILED AFTER 60K MILES. THIS WAS THE SAME EPASS SYSTEM IN THE OTHER 2013 FORD FLEX THAT WERE PART OF THE RECALL FOR THE EPASS FAILURE. WHEN THE EPASS SYSTEM FAILED THE VEHICLE LOST POWER STEERING AND COULDN'T BE DRIVEN. I SPENT $2,500 ON THE NEW PARTS AND MY CAR WAS IN THE SHOP FOR A WEEK.
WHILE BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY THE STEERING STARTED FIGHTING AGAINST MY INPUT. IT BECAME IMPOSSIBLE TO EVEN PARK CORRECTLY BACK IN THE DRIVEWAY. ENDED UP LEAVING IT IN THE GRASS. TURNED VEHICLE OFF, RESTARTED ENGINE AND STEERING RESUMED TO NORMAL. NOW I DON'T TRUST THE VEHICLE AT DRIVING SPEEDS.

2013 FORD FLEX WITH ~130,000 MILES. SLOW RIGHT HAND TURN INTO PARKING LOT, COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER STEERING IN COMBINATION WITH "POWER STEERING FAILURE" AND "CHECK ADVANCETRAC" WARNING LIGHTS. RESEARCH INDICATES A RECALL (NHTSA ID: 15V340000,FORD 15S18, NHTSA) FOR MY VEHICLE BUILT BETWEEN 9/7/2010 AND 2/28/2012. AS MY BUILD DATE WAS 12/12 IT DOES NOT FALL UNDER THE RECALL. I HAVE CONFIRMED THIS WITH MY PERSONAL MECHANIC, A LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP (VARSITY FORD, ANN ARBOR MI) AS WELL AS WITH FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE. SYMPTOMS OF MY FAILURE ARE IDENTICAL TO THOSE DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL. MECHANIC FOLLOWED TECHNICIAN INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE RECALL, BY FLASHING/UPDATING PSCM MODULE SOFTWARE. STEERING APPEARED TO BE WORKING NORMAL. SUBSEQUENT WARNING LIGHT ~3DAYS LATER OF "SERVICE POWER STEERING" APPEARED, BUT STEERING WAS STILL FUNCTIONING. DRIVING OUR FORD FLEX WHEN THE POWER STEERING INTERMITTENTLY GAVE OUT. IT BECAME HARD TO STEER. LUCKILY IT WAS AT LOW SPEED PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT. AS A RESULT I HIT A LOW PLANTER AND SUFFERED BODY DAMAGE. NOW THE STEERING JUST GROANS WHEN I TURN THE WHEEL. DEALER STATES NOTHING IS WRONG AND THE NOISE IS NORMAL. IN DOING MY RESEARCH I HAVE NOTED THAT FORD ADDRESSED THIS PROBLEM IN THESE VEHICLES BY A RECALL. MY VEHICLE WAS JUST OUT OF RANGE AND NOW MY LOCAL FORD DEALER IS TELLING ME THAT THEY CAN NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT FORD CAN ARBITRARILY PICK A DATE AND CUT OFF WHEN THERE ARE OBVIOUSLY STILL PROBLEMS WITH THIS STEERING SYSTEM AND BELIEVE ALL 2013 FLEX'S USED THE SAME PARTS.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. *JS
I HAD PROBLEMS WITH BOTH THE POWER STEERING AND THE FUEL DELIVER ON MY FLEX. IN BOTH CASES I FOUND RECALL NOTICES THAT ARE EXACTLY THE SAME AS NOTED IN THE RECALLS. IN THE CASE OF THE POWER STEERING THE DEALER REPLACED THE MODULE FOR FREE BECAUSE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY BUT SAID MY VEHICLE WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. NOW I'M HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL DELIVERY EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL BUT THE DEALER STILL SAYS MY PARTICULAR VEHICLE IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. I BELIEVE THERE ARE MORE VEHICLES THAN ORIGINALLY DETERMINED THAT ARE HAVING PROBLEMS. THE DEALER IN THIS CASE IS VILLAGE FORD, 23535 MICHIGAN, DEARBORN, MI. 48124. THE CAR HAD BEEN SITTING WHILE I WAS WORKING (9 HOURS) AND WOULD CRANK BUT NOT START.
