I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY GOING APPROX 50 MPH WHEN MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP AND AUTOMATICALLY PULLED ME TOWARDS ONCOMING TRAFFIC. I HAD TO FORCEFULLY PULL OFF OF THE ROAD. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THE EPAS IS BAD. FROM DOING RESEARCH I HAVE LEARNED THIS IS ACTUALLY A COMMON ISSUE. IT WAS TERRIFYING FOR ME, ESPECIALLY BECAUSE MY 2 YO AND 3 MONTH OLD CHILDREN WERE IN THE VEHICLE WITH ME WHEN THIS OCCURRED. THERE IS ONLY 61K MILES ON THIS VEHICLE THAT WE HAVE ONLY HAD FOR 7 MONTHS. THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED BEFORE THERE ARE FATALITIES- IF THERE HAVEN'T BEEN ALREADY!!!
WHILE DRIVING, I NOTICED SOME 'STICKING' OR 'JERKING' IN THE STEERING. ALSO, A GRINDING SOUND WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL, WHILE SITTING STILL OR WHILE DRIVING. BEING MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND, WE HEADED TO FORD DEALERSHIP TO DROP OFF FOR SERVICE, ON THE WAY TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE DASH WARNINGS STARTED FLASHING. SERVICE ADVANCE TRAC, NO HILL ASSIST, AND SERVICE STEERING ASSIST NOW. WE MADE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, AFTER A SCARY RIDE THERE! 2016 WITH 65,000 MILES. $2500 IN REPAIRS. DEFINITELY SCARY, AND CERTAINLY A SAFETY ISSUE HAD THE STEERING SEIZED AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED.
WHILE DRIVING RECEIVED A WARNING LIGHT STATING, "LOSS OF STEERING-SERVICE ADVANCE TRACK". IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE WARNING THE STEERING LOCKED UP AND WOULD NOT STEER. TOWED TO DEALER AND ADVISED THAT THIS HAPPENS FREQUENTLY AND REPLACED THE RACK AND PINION AND ELECTRONIC STEERING CONTROL. STEERING IMMEDIATELY LOCKED UP.
I HAVE HAD THIS USED CAR 2 MONTHS AND IT ONLY HAS 25K ON IT, THE STEERING COLUMN IS GRINDING AND FEELS VERY TIGHT WHEN DRIVING, ALMOST LIKE YOUR DRIVING ON A FLAT .DEALERSHIP OFFERED TO FIX IT FOR $2000.00 '.ARE YOU KIDDING? SHOULD BE A RECALL LIKE OLDER YEARS ARE.

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED AFTER LEAVING THE DEALER. THE CONTACT IMMEDIATELY CALLED DEALER AND SHE WAS ADVISED TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED DUE TO THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE MESSAGE "STEERING FAILURE" SUDDENLY DISPLAYED AND THE POWER STEERING MALFUNCTIONED, WHICH CAUSED THE STEERING WHEEL TO BECOME EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO TURN. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO WALLS FORD (2 MERRILL ST, SALISBURY, MA) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEERING RACK AND GEAR ASSEMBLY WERE FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 43,500. *BF *JB
MY STEERING RACK/PINION HAS GONE COMPLETELY OUT. AT FIRST THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD MAKE NOISES WHEN TURNING, HOWEVER NOW IT IS COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE. I HAVE RESEARCHED AND PREVIOUS MODEL EXPLORERS HAVE HAD THE EXACT SAME ISSUES AND MULTIPLE 2016 MODELS ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. I CAN'T FIND A PART, I CAN'T DRIVE MY VEHICLE. WHAT IS NEEDED FOR A RECALL TO HAPPEN ON THIS MODEL?
LOSS OFF POWER STEERING AND STABILITY CONTROL
WHILE STOPPED AND ATTEMPTING TO TURN MY STEERING WHEEL TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT TO MANEUVER OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, BACKING INTO MY DRIVEWAY OR SIMPLY MAKING A RIGHT OR LEFT TURN, I WOULD HEAR A POPPING NOISE COMING FROM THE STEERING MECHANISM. THE NOISE DID NOT HAPPEN ALL THE TIME AND I COULD GO A MONTH OR SO WITHOUT HEARING IT AT ALL. I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO THE DEALERSHIP FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND ASKED FORD TO DO A VISUAL INSPECTION OF MY STEERING MECHANISM TO MAKE SURE NOTHING APPEARED TO BE OBVIOUSLY IDENTIFIABLE. EXPLAINED TO FORD THAT THE POPPING NOISE COMES AND GOES. I WAS TOLD THAT EVERYTHING LOOKED TO BE IN GOOD SHAPE AND NOTHING WAS LOOSE. A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER THE POPPING NOISE WAS REPLACED WITH STEERING RESISTANCE AND GRINDING AS I TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL IN A PARKED POSITION AND WHILE DRIVING....
TAKATA RECALL. WHENEVER I MANEUVER SLOWLY WHEN I PARK HORIZONTALLY, I CAN HEAR CRACKLING SOUND AND THIS WAS FIXED TWICE BY FORD DEALER. RECENTLY, THE DASHBOARD HAD WARNING THAT STEERING IS NOT WORKING. THE STEERING BECAME STIFF RIGHT AWAY AND STIFFER THAT HAVE TO DRIVE SLOWLY AND TURN ON MY HAZARD LIGHT THE NEXT 3 MILES TO REACH HOME. I COULD HARDLY TURN THE WHEEL THAT HAVE TO AVOID ROADS WHERE I HAVE TO TURN. IT WAS FIXED BY SAME DEALER AND GOT MY VEHICLE AFTER A WEEK. THE MILEAGE IS 18,000 AND NOW I'M NOT CONFIDENT TO TAKE MY 3 YEAR OLD CAR ON LONG DISTANCE DRIVE. THE SUSPENSION WAS FIXED AS WELL MID 2018 FOR THE CAR IS RUNNING LIKE A 20 YEAR OLD TRUCK ON THE ROAD.
AFTER 44K MILES THE STEERING RACK IS COMPLETELY BROKEN AND REQUIRES A FULL REPLACEMENT. THIS IS GREATER THAN $2500 COST FOR A NEW CAR CAR MAKES A LOUD MECHANICAL CLUNKING SOUND WHEN TURNING RIGHT. HAD IT REVIEWED BY LOCAL FORD DEALER AND THEY SAID BEARINGS ON THE RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY ARE GOING. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE WHERE A NEW CAR WITH SUCH LOW MILES HAS A STEERING SYSTEM THAT REQUIRES FULL REPLACEMENT. INTERNET SEARCHES HAVE SHOWN MANY INSTANCES OF PEOPLE REQUIRING A REPLACEMENT OF THE SYSTEM.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES AND OFFERED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY, STATING THAT NOTHING ELSE COULD BE DONE. LATER ON, WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, THE STEERING LOST POWER. AN UNKNOWN WARNING INDICATOR REGARDING A VISIT TO THE DEALER ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO WRAY FORD WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE...
RANDOMLY, CAR BEGAN MAKING A GRINDING NOISE WHEN TURNING ONE DAY. TOOK CARE INTO SHOP AND DISCOVERED THAT STEERING RACK NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. CAR ONLY HAS 70K MILES AND WILL COST $2,300 TO REPAIR.

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 43,000.

SEEMS UNUSUAL TO HAVE MAJOR PART FAIL AFTER 3 YEARS OF DRIVING.

MY WIFE, DAUGHTER AND I WERE DRIVING FORM NYC TO BALTIMORE IN MY 2016 FORD EXPLORER. IN THE LAST 10 MINUTES OF THE TRIP I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 65MPH. I RECEIVED A WARNING MESSAGE ON MY VEHICLE STATING THAT POWER STEERING HAS MALFUNCTIONED AND TO SERVICE NOW. I SLOWED THE VEHICLE DOWN AND TRAVELED ANOTHER 8 MILES TO MY DESTINATION. AFTER CONSULTING MY OWNER'S MANUAL, I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND GOT THE SAME MESSAGE AS WELL AS ANOTHER ONE SAYING THAT THE LANE DETECTING SENSOR WAS MALFUNCTIONING AS WELL. THE NEXT MORNING I WAS GOING TO TAKE IT TO A NEARBY DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE. HOWEVER WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE AND TRIED TO MOVE FORWARD THE STEERING WAS VERY STIFF AND DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. CURRENTLY THEY ARE ASSESSING THE VEHICLE AND MENTIONED THAT THIS HAPPENS WITH...
WHILE DRIVING, DASHBOARD ALERTS STARTED WITH: ADVANCE TRAC/TERRAIN MANAGEMENT FAULT. STEERING LOSS/STOP SAFELY. POWER STEERING SEIZED UP AND ONLY ABLE TO DRIVE FOR 5 MINUTES BUT COULD FEEL POWER STEERING TIGHTENING UP. PARKED AND TURNED OFF VEHICLE; THEN COULD NOT TURN STEERING WHEEL.
VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY THANKFULLY AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS LOCKED AND DOES NOT MOVE .
STEERING WHEEL NOT MOVING, NOT ABLE TO CONTROL IT.MILAGE ON CAR 42,000. CAR TOWED TO A DEALER. THEY FOUND, THAT THE RACK AND PINION IS COMPLETELY LOCKED AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. ESTIMATE REPAIR AT 2,400. WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER IT. A CASE WAS OPEN WITH FORD.
POWER STEERING GOES OUT WHILE DRIVING CAUSING UNCONTROLLED STEERING.
I HAVE 28,452 MILES ON MY CAR AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. I GET A WARNING WHICH SAYS STEERING ASSIST FAULT SERVICE REQUIRED, TERRAIN MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FAULT, AND SERVICE ADVANCE TRAC ERRORS UPON STARTING MY VEHICLE. IN RESEARCHING THESE ERRORS, IT SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH FORD EXPLORERS AND A COSTLY ONE TO FIX. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A MANUFACTURE DEFECT, DUE TO THE SHEER NUMBER OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS AND LOW MILEAGE. IN ADDITION, THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY PROBLEM IF ONE WAS TRAVELING DOWN THE ROAD WHICH ALSO SEEMS TO HAPPENED.
STEERING WHEEL LOCKED
POPPING NOISE WHEN TURNING RIGHT. PRIMARILY WHEN IT IS COLD. NEEDS A STEERING RACK WITH ONLY 50K MI AND 2 YRS OLD. DEALER WOULD NOT LET US DRIVE IT UNTIL PART CAME IN. THEY PUT US IN A RENTAL AT THEIR EXPENSE AND WE HAVE HAD A FULL SIZE QUAD CAB TRUCK. STEERING RACK IS ON BACK ORDER WITH FORD AND WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR 16 DAYS AND NOTHING IS IN SIGHT. DEALER IN BEDFORD VA. HAS TAKEN GOOD CARE OF US.

AT APPROXIMATELY 35000 THE STEERING STARTED TO SLIP AND BECOME PERIODICALLY UNRESPONSIVE. AT 35975 MILES IT FAILED COMPLETELY WHILE DRIVING ALMOST LEADING TO AN ACCIDENT. IT WAS TAKEN TO A FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY SAID THE ENTIRE STEERING SYSTEM WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AND QUOTED $3000 FOR THE REPAIR.
MY POWER STEERING HAS BEEN MAKING A SNAPPING NOISE AND I'M AFRAID OF CATOSTROFIC FAILURE. I NO LONGER TRUST DRIVING THE VEHICLE, IT HAS ONLY 36,000 MILES.
WITH LESS THAN 30,000 MILES, MY STEERING BEGAN TO BIND WHEN TURNED FULLY TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT. THIS WAS ONLY NOTICEABLE AT LOW SPEEDS, BUT DUE TO MY CONCERNS ABOUT THE SAFETY HAZARDS OF STEERING FAILURES I TOOK IT TO DEALER FOR AN EVALUATION. THEY REPORTED THAT THE STEERING MODULE HAD FAILED AND IT WOULD COST >$2300 TO REPAIR. MY WARRANTY EXPIRED DUE TO TIME (42 MONTHS) SO UNLESS FORD OFFERS A WARRANTY EXTENSION I WILL HAVE TO PAY AN EXORBITANT AMOUNT FOR WHAT SHOULD NEVER FAIL - CERTAINLY NOT WITH LESS THAN 30,000 MILES. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED HAD I NOT BROUGHT THE CAR IN IMMEDIATELY, BUT THE NEED TO REPLACE THE STEERING SYSTEM SUGGESTS IT WAS VERY SERIOUS.

2016 FORD EXPLORER LIMITED 40K MILES, IDENTIFIED MY STEERING WAS LOCKED UP 3 WEEKS AGO, I ATTRIBUTED IT TO SEVERE COLD TEMPERATURES. I CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY ADVISED THEY CANNOT TROUBLESHOOT UNTIL IT HAPPENS AGAIN. FRIDAY NIGHT 12/7/18 WHILE DRIVING IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC ON A ONE WAY SLUSH COVERED ROAD, I LOST THE ABILITY TO STEER MY VEHICLE. I HAD TO MANUALLY STEER MY VEHICLE TO SAFETY, IT WAS INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS AND SCARY.I WAS ABLE TO PULL IT ONTO A SIDE STREET AND IT HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. I AM THANKFUL I WAS NOT GOING ANY FASTER THAN 30MPH WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I HAVE FOUND 71 REPORTED INCIDENTS WITH FORD EXPLORERS OF THIS YEAR LOSING STEERING AMONG OTHER MAJOR PROBLEMS. I AM WAITING A CALL FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND CONTACTING FORD IN THE INTERUM.
BEGAN HEARING A KNOCKING NOISE WHEN TURNING RIGHT. ONLY HAVE 38K MILES (2K OUT OF WARRANTY) AND IT IS GOING TO COST ME $2,000 TO FIX THIS STEERING PROBLEM.. THIS IS TOTALLY DISAPPOINTING ON A CAR WITH THIS LOW MILEAGE.

WHILE TURNING THE WHEEL, THERE WAS A COMPLETE DIFFERENT FEELING WITH A SMALL LIKE BUMP AND THEN THE WHEEL WOULD TURN VERY FREELY WITH THE CAR WHEELS NOT TURNING. DROVE STRAIGHT TO FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID I CANNOT DRIVE IT BECAUSE THE STEERING SHAFT HAD TO BE REPLACED FROM FAILURE. THEY DETERMINED THIS WITH A VERY SHORT TEST DRIVE IN THEIR OWN PARKING LOT.
AT STARTUP A WARNING APPEARED ON THE DASH READING "STEERING LOSS- STOP SAFELY" ALONG WITH OTHERS CONCERNING ADVANCE TRAC, TERRAIN MANAGEMENT, AND HILL ASSIST. UPON TRYING TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL IT WAS LOCKED COMPLETELY. NOT JUST HARD TO STEER LIKE THE POWER STEERING QUIT - IT WAS LOCKED TIGHT. IT WAS TOWED TO A FORD DEALER AND THE TECH THOUGHT HE WOULD DRIVE IT INTO THE SHOP, BUT COULD NOT BECAUSE HE AGREED THE STEERING WAS COMPLETELY LOCKED UP. THE TECH TELLS ME HE WAS ABLE TO RESTORE STEERING BY CLEARING OUT SOME ABS CODES THAT WERE STORED. THIS IS CONCERNING BECAUSE IT SEEMS THERE IS A COMPUTER FAULT CONDITION WHICH LOCKS UP THE STEERING COMPLETELY. THE TECH NOW SAYS THE RACK AND PINION MODULE IS MAKING A LOUD NOISE AND THEY PLAN TO REPLACE IT. THANKFULLY THE VEHICLE HAD THIS PROBLEM AT STARTUP AND NOT WHILE IN MOTION...

WHILE TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL WETHER STOPPED OR MOVING, THERE WAS A POPPING/CLUNKING NOISE. SOMETIMES THE CLUNK NOISE WAS LOUDER, SOMETIMES IT WASN'T AS LOUD. NOISE COULD BE FELT AND HEARD FROM STEERING COLUMN AND FLOORBOARD. STEERING WHEEL WOULD ALSO GRAB AT TIMES WHERE YOU PHYSICALLY HAD TO FORCE THE WHEEL TO TURN. THIS SEEMED TO HAPPEN MORE AT SLOW SPEEDS. WHILE DOING A SERVICE ON THE VEHICLE, I INSPECTED ALL STEERING COMPONENTS. WHILE ANOTHER PERSON WAS TURNING THE WHEEL, I COULD HEAR POPPING IN THE RIGHT SIDE STEERING BOOT THAT COVERS THE INNER TIE ROD END. I GRABBED THE BOOT AND SHOOK IT AND COULD HEAR METAL RATTLING INSIDE OF IT. LEFT SIDE DID NOT MAKE ANY NOISE. I REMOVED THE BOOT OFF OF THE RACK AND PINION AND FOUND 2 PIECES OF METAL THAT WERE HANGING ON THE GEAR OF THE RACK AND DAMAGED. THE PRICES OF METAL...
BOUGHT THE 2016 EXPLORER LIMITED WITH ROUGHLY 28,000 MILES ON IT. RAN GREAT FOR ABOUT 2,000 MILES AND THEN STARTED NOTICING A POP/CLUNK NOISE WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL TO THE RIGHT GOING 5MPH OR LESS. WHILE DRIVING MY 2016 FORD EXPLORER ON A STATE HWY AT 55 MPH, SUDDENLY BELLS AND WARNING ON DASH INDICATING STEERING FAILURE ISSUE. WITHIN 1 BLOCK, I WAS UNABLE TO STEER AT ALL. HAD TO BE TOWED. TOLD BY DEALERSHIP THAT THE POWER STEERING GEAR WAS BAD. TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THE COST TO REPAIR WOULD BE $2200. VEHICLE HAS 76,000 MILES. VERY UNSAFE CONDITION HAD IT HAPPENED IN HEAVY TRAFFIC. POWER STEERING FAILED WHILE DRIVING THE CAR ON A BUSY PUBLIC STREET. EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE SAFELY OFF THE ROAD.
THE PROBLEM STARTED WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED. I CAN BEST DESCRIBE IT AS A "STICKINESS" AT ABOUT 5 DEGREES OFF CENTER.
