2013 FORD ESCAPE Steering Problems

My power control steering module is failing. A ford dealership told me the part in my car was defective and they have updated the part years ago. I was told the part alone will cost me around $1,000+ and that I have to pay out of pocket. Ford dealership said the part is on backorder until December 2022 and that I can only get the part through their manufacture. This is extremely dangerous and my steering could go at anytime!

My family and I of 4 was traveling on a family get away trip and on the highway after about 23 miles , The power steering sign comes up and the steering wheel gets stiff on the middle of the highway. Almost causing my family and I a head on collision with on coming vehicles . My vehicle has been checked about 4 months before by ford and also I have checked the ecu and there are no trouble codes . My family and I have almost ended up in the hospital or near death because this issue that just suddenly happens . This is not a safe situation to be in.

Sudden loss of power steering with an associated warning message on the dash for a steering assist fault.

Started car while in our garage and a message came on the dash 'Steering Assist Fault'. Wife could not move steering wheel. We turned car off and restarted. Steering was back to normal. No message was displayed. This was scary because what if it happened while driving?

In my driveway two times so far my power assist failed giving me an error on my drivers screes automatic power assist failure. The steering became almost impossible to move and I had to shut off the car then restart it to clear the error. On the Ford Forums apparently there are lots of other people who are experiencing this same failure and it is showing up on new and older vehicles as well. Also this is a cross model problem and is a defective design from The Ford motor company and should be delt with. Thank you.

Was driving my car and got a message about steering assist came on. Shut the car off because I could not steer it, turned car back on and message went away and it was ok. Had an appointment 12/14 to have my car inspected and an oil change at Carnegie Motors so I told them what happened . I was attempting to move the vehicle which had been parked on the street in front of my residence into the driveway so it would be out of the way of the scheduled street sweeping. I could typically just reverse right angle the vehicle into the driveway. However, upon reversing the vehicle moved but not according to the way I was steering it. This just so the information is sent in to someone I bought this car used from.day one had problems warranty did not cover anything. First when you would start it it would flash power steering assist fault on the dash you shut car off and restart it goes away. Then the turbo boost sensors keep going I have replaces these three different times find out there is a service bulletin out for it but ford won't fix it for free there is a short in the wire you have to pay out of pocket for. Car currently has ~ 104k miles and all of a sudden a "Steering Assist" failure warning comes on and I lose power to the power steering while driving. Had to slow down and carefully pull to the side of the road as I almost did not make the upcoming turn on the road.

“Steering assist fault service required” Power steering does not work. I have read multiple forums where people have had this issue and almost crashed. There are recalls on other year models and explorers of the same year model. This needs to be a recall.

ELECTRIC POWER STEERING ASSIST STOP WORKING WHILE DRIVING. NO POWER STEERING IN VEHICLE AT ALL. LOOKED ONLINE AND SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES THAT SHOULD BE RECALLED.

I was driving off when a Steering Assist Fault Service Required message appeared on my dash. I could no longer control the steering wheel and got really hard to move. I had to put it in reverse and leave it where it was parked, since it was a hazard not being able to move the steering wheel left or right.

The power steering overheated malted. Had to replace unit 2,500. Also seatbelts no longer retract...safety issues....told car could catch on fire if i drove car with bad power steering.

I was pulling out of my street onto the highway when my power steering went out. No warning lights or anything, just took everything I have (as a young female) to turn it and then pull over. Took it in to the dealership and they said it needs to be replaced and that it happens to these cars. $3,100 to fix it! I had to actually go sifting through the info and settings to find the alert that the steering assist had an issue, it didn’t even tell me. Luckily nobody was immediately behind me on the highway, it could have been really bad. Overall very scary and very unimpressed this has happened to others and Ford hasn’t done anything about it.

MY CAR WAS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AND ONE DAY I RECEIVED AN ERROR CODE THAT SAID POWER ASSIST FAULT. WHEN I BEGAN DRIVING I REALIZED THAT MY CAR HAD ESSENTIALLY LOST IT'S POWER STEERING. MY MOST EXPENSIVE REPAIR WAS FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE STEERING RACK ASSEMBLY ON JULY20, 2020 AT A COST OF $2400. MY MILEAGE AT THIS TIME WAS 55,602. I ENCOUNTERED TWO INCIDENTS WHERE MY STEERING WHEEL FROZE. I WAS PARKED AT THIS TIME AND IT CORRECTED ITSELF. THE FOLLOWING DAY IT OCCURRED AGAIN AND I GOT AN ERROR MESSAGE 'POWER STEERING FAILURE.' I WENT THRU THE CAR WASH AND TRIED TO PUT MY CAR FROM NEUTRAL TO DRIVE AND THE GEAR JUMPED INTO PARK JAMING THE TRANSMISSION INTO REVERSE. I STARTED MY 2013 FORD ESCAPE AND A LIGHT CAME ON STATING STEERING WHEEL MALFUNCTION. THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE GARAGE AND WAS STATIONARY. I TRIED BACKING THE ESCAPE OUT OF THE GARAGE BUT THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT MOVE LEFT OR RIGHT.. IT WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP AND THE TECH SCANNED THE POWER STEERING MODULE AND FOUND A FAILURE CODE FOR THE STEERING GEAR. THE TECH INSTALLED NEW STEERING GEAR. HE RECOMMENDED IT SHOULD NOT BE DRIVEN AND WAS LEFT THERE FOR REPAIR. THE TECH HAD ALSO STATED HE HAS SEEN THIS HAPPEN ALOT BEFORE TO FORD VEHICLES...

2013 FORD ESCAPE 1.6 AWD. THE CAR PRESENTED A "WHIRING" TYPE OF SOUND FOR A FEW DAYS WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT AND THE STEERING FAULT MESSAGE APPEARED ON THE DASH. I PARKED THE CAR AND LEFT IT ALONE FOR A FEW DAYS UNTIL I NEEDED TO MOVE IT. UPON ATTEMPTING TO MOVE THE VEHICLE THE STEERING GEAR WAS COMPLETELY LOCKED UP. THIS IS MY 18 YEAR OLD DAUGHTERS VEHICLE AND I COULD NOT IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF SHE WAS DRIVING WHEN THIS OCCURRED. TURNED MY CAR ON, PUT IT IN DRIVE AND WENT TO TURN MY WHEEL AND HAD NO STEERING. I CHECKED UNDER MY VEHICLE AND THERE WAS NOTHING. I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE. MY HUSBAND RAN A SYSTEMS CHECK AND THE RESULTS SAID - STEERING ASSIST FAILURE- SERVICE REQUIRED. MY HUSBAND TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND BACK ON AND THE STEERING WORKED. RAN ANOTHER SYSTEMS CHECK AND NOTHING SHOWED UP. ANOTHER COMPLAINT ABOUT THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM HAS BEEN FILED THE COMPLAINT NUMBER: 11292425. UPON RESEARCH THERE HAS BEEN NUMEROUS AMOUNTS OF COMPLAINTS MADE TO FORD AND FORD'S DEALERSHIPS. THEY ARE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE BUT STILL REFUSES TO ADDRESS OR FIX THIS ISSUE.
