My power steering went out as I was driving at a slow rate. I managed to get it back home. I looked up the recalls for my vehicle and it stated any 2011 Ford Escapes made in Kansas City was issued a recall. My vehicle was made in that city during that time. I contacted Ford and they stated my vehicle doesn't apply to that recall. I was not aware of the recall because I did not own the vehicle when it was issued. The affected Escapes that were built from August 18, 2006 through September 11, 2010 at the Kansas City Assembly Plant. When I entered elementary street in Lousville CO, to pick up my three grandchildren, the steering got so hard that I couldn't maneuver between so many cars, I couldn't turn, I was very scared if children started to come out, I got to the parking and parking badly, I called for help, to pick up children, and a man said turn it on again, it will work, my brother took the car to my house, and according to him it worked, I was so scared, that I will not drive it anymore, until I fix it , mechanic said the electric power steering should be changed, in the Ford, they gave a budget for a spare part, I am inquiring about "Recalls" and it says my car has zero, but there is one on # 14S05 and I want to know why this does not apply to me car, can...

Vehicle lost power steering several times almost caused an accident. When car is restarted it will work again. Ford recalled the power steering control module for some ford escapes of my year yet my vehicle is not included in that recall and from reading forms a lot of other ford escapes are not being covered by this recall. Its expensive to fix and obviously this has been an ongoing safety issue with Ford so what do I do? Keep driving and pray I don't get in an accident? Someone needs to sue Ford.
We purchased this car for our youngest son as his first car, he was driving it and complained that periodically it would become very difficult to steer. I would test the car and found it to be operating normally and would check it for the next several weeks with no issues, at this time I wasn't sure what me son was describing. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that the power steering module needed to be reset. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not covered under recall. LOST TOTAL CONTROL OF POWER STEERING AND ALMOST CRASHED. I NOTICED RECALL 14S05 FOR POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE. IT ONLY COVERS CARS BUILT BETWEEN 2008 AND SEPT 11,2010. MY VEHICLE WAS BUILT OCTOBER 2010 AT SAME PLANT. HOW SURE CAN I BE THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT BUILT WITH DEFECTIVE PART. THE COST TO REPLACE THE POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE IS AMOST $2200. MY CAR IS AT THE FORD DEALER SHIP AT THIS MOMENT. I REACHED OUT TO FORD CUSTOMER RELATIONS, BUT NO SUCH LUCK. I HAPPEN TO OWN 6 FORDS AT T HE MOMENT AND HAVE PURCHASED NOTHING BUT FORDS FOR 20 YEARS.THIS ISSUE COULD HAVE GOTTEN ME KILLED.

MY POWER STEERING ASSIST LIGHT IS ON AND I CAN NOT STEER MY VEHICLE. I GOT IN TO TAKE MY KIDS OUT AND I COULD NOT STEER. ITS TOO UNSAFE TO DRIVE, AND I READ THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH FORD UNDER STEERING ISSUE COMPLAINTS. IF MY VEHICLE IS COVERED TO BE REPAIRED UNDER A RECALL I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE NEXT STEP. ITS AROUND $1000 TO FIX AND I CAN NOT AFFORD THIS.

SO, FRUSTRATED THAT I CANT STEER IT AND HAVE TWO KIDS I NEED TO TOTE AROUND BUT ITS VERY UNSAFE AND I CANT DRIVE IT WITH MY KIDS IN THE CAR FOR SAFETY CONCERNS. THE MECHANIC THEN REFERRED HER TO THE MANUFACTURER WHO INFORMED HER THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. Consumer stated vehicle was under construction during recall.

WHILE DRIVING UPHILL ON THE ENTRANCE TO MY COLLEGE CAMPUS THE STEERING WHEEL FROZE AND I LOST ABILITY TO STEER THE VEHICLE. IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN THE WHEEL TO GET IT INTO A PARKING SPOT. AFTER CONTACTING THE DEALER ABOUT THE RECALL I WAS ADVISED THERE WAS NO OPEN RECALL. MY LOCAL REPAIR SHOP ADVISED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSTIC. I STOPPED BEFORE ENTERING A TRAFFIC CIRCLE. WHEN STARTING AND TURNING RIGHT TO ENTER THE TRAFFIC CIRCLE, MY POWER STEERING SEIZED UP. IT DIDN'T JUST GO DEAD -- IT STARTED VIBRATING AND I COULD FEEL THE MOTOR ACTIVELY RESISTING ANY STEERING MOVEMENT. THERE WAS NO AUDIBLE WARNING AND NO WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON MY DASHBOARD. ALL ELECTRONICS SEEMED TO OPERATE NORMALLY. WHEN I TURNED MY IGNITION OFF AND ON AGAIN, STEERING RETURNED TO NORMAL. THIS IS A LIFE-THREATENING SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY RECALL NOTICES RELATED TO STEERING.

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
THE POWER STEERING HAS FAILED MULTIPLE TIMES. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN WHENEVER I TAKE A HEAVY U-TURN. THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT AND AI HAVE NO CONTROL OVER MY STEERING. ACCORDING TO DEALERSHIPS THE POWER STEERING IS COMPUTERIZED, SO IS QUITE COSTLY TO FIX. BUT THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY HAZARD WHEN DRIVING. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON CITY STREETS ONLY WHEN MAKING U-TURNS.
WHILE MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN AT AN INTERSECTION PULLING OUT FROM A STOP SIGN. I WAS TURNING FROM A CITY STREET ONTO A HIGHWAY. THE POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING MAKING THE VEHICLE HARD TO STEER AND ALMOST HITTING A STONE BARRIER BETWEEN THE LANES. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN PARKED AND TURNED OFF, AND LATER STARTED AND THE POWER STEERING HAD RETURNED. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THE POWER STEERING WAS LOST. THE FIRST TIME WAS ON A CITY STREET WHILE PULLING OUT FROM A PARKING SPOT AND VEHICLE WAS THEN PARKED. A SHORT TIME LATER THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED AND THE POWER STEERING HAD RETURNED. THIS HAS NOW HAPPENED A THIRD TIME WHILE BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT THE POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING , THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND SHUT OFF. WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE, THE POWER STEERING FAILED. I CONTINUED TO MY DESTINATION USING MANUAL STEERING AND PARKED THE VEHICLE. I COMPLETED MY ERRAND AND WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE THE POWER STEERING WAS WORKING. THE FOLLOWING DAY, I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE MY WIFE BOUGHT IT TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE STEERING TORQUE SENSOR AND THAT IT SHOULD BE REPLACED. RATHER THAN REPAIR THE VEHICLE, WE TRADED IT IN FOR A NEW FORD ESCAPE.

MY POWER STEERING ASSIST IS LOST ON MY 2011 FORD ESCAPE. 915,000 OTHER FORDS HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE AND FORD HAS ALLOWED THIS RECALL. MY VIN# DOES NOT MATCH WITH THE CARS THAT FORD ALLOWS RECALLED. FORD TELLS ME THAT MY CAR WAS MFG. IN JUNE 2011 SO THIS POWER STEERING ASSIST WILL NOT HAPPEN. AND YET I HAD MY CAR TOWED BECAUSE MY POWER STEERING ASSIST WAS NOT WORKING. I AM AFRAID OF DRIVING MY CAR AS THIS ISSUE CREATES A DANGEROUS DRIVING SITUATION.
I LOST POWER STEERING WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. I WAS SWITCHING LANES AND APPROACHING THE EXIT RAMP, WHEN I MY CAR ALERTED ME TO THE LOSS OF STEERING AND I HAD TO MANUALLY STEER THE CAR OFF THE HIGHWAY AND SAFELY ONTO A SIDE STREET.
WHILE DRIVING, MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT TO WHERE I COULD NOT TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO TURN A CORNER WHICH ALMOST LEAD TO ME AND MY HUSBAND GETTING HIT BY A SEMI TRUCK. THE CAR HAD BEEN RUNNING AND TURNING JUST FINE UP TO STOPPING AT THE STOP SIGN. ONCE I WENT TO TURN RIGHT, I COULDN'T TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND WENT STRAIGHT THROUGH THE INTERSECTION INSTEAD WHICH IS WHEN I WAS ALMOST HIT BY A SEMI TRUCK THAT WAS HEADED IN THE OTHER DIRECTION BECAUSE I COULDN'T TURN RIGHT, MY CAR WENT STRAIGHT THE THE INTERSECTION. HAD TO TURN THE CAR OFF SIT FOR A FEW MINUTES, TURN IT BACK ON AND THEN IT WORKED. TOOK IT TO THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP 3 DAYS LATER AND IT HAPPENED AGAIN TO THEM. THE POWER STEERING JUST STOPS WORKING WHILE THE CAR IS ALREADY DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD WHICH...
POWER STEERING STOPS WORKING. VERY HARD TO STEER THE CAR, RETURNS AFTER SHUT OFF. ORIGINAL OWNER. THE FAULT HAPPENED WHILE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION.
VEHICLE FELT SLIGHTLY STIFF IN STEERING. NEXT DAY OPERATED FINE UNTIL SWITCHED OFF AND LATER STARTED UP AGAIN, AT WHICH POINT STEERING WAS VERY STIFF (DANGEROUS TO DRIVE)! I THEN PARKED IT AND TURNED THE ENGINE OFF. LATER I STARTED THE ENGINE AND STEERING WAS AGAIN OK. SOMETIMES IT GETS HARD TO STEERING WHILE DRIVING...I NEVER KNOW WHEN THE STEERING WILL GO OUT. IT CHANGES AT DIFFERENT TIMES, AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS AND ON FLAT OR UNLEVEL STREETS. THIS IS A SAFETY RELATED DEFECT AND POSES A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION! I HAVE FOUND MANY REPORTS OF THIS SAME ISSUE ON THE SAME AND SIMILAR VEHICLES. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 18, 2014...FORD'S NUMBER FOR THIS RECALL IS 14S05.???
I PURCHASED MY USED ESCAPE IN MARCH OF THIS YEAR. ITS A 2011. I HAVE HAD IT NOW FOR 8 MONTHS. 2 DAYS AGO MY CAR SHOWED A MSG "POWER STEER ASSIST FAULT" IT STILL DROVE FINE THAT NIGHT. THEN YESTERDAY MORNING MY CAR WAS INCREDIBLY HARD TO TURN. I LOOKED UP THE MSG AND GOT RECALL INFO. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER PAID $100 BUCKS FOR DIAGNOSTICS ON THE CAR. MY LAST $100. THEY GOT ERROR CODE B2278. IVE CALLED REPEATEDLY AND SEARCHED ONLINE. MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED WHERE THE RECALLS WERE, THE ERROR CODES ARE THE SAME, AND IM BEING TOLD THAT THERE IS NO RECALL FOR MY VEHICLE. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE WHEN THE EXACT CONDITIONS THAT OTHER RECALLS HAD MY CAR HAS? I DONT KNOW IF THE CAR HAD THE RECALL FIXED BEFORE, BC I BOUGHT IT USED. IDK IF THE DEALER KNEW. I JUST NEED...

AFTER WAITING FOR APPROXIMATELY TEN MINUTES, THE STEERING WHEEL RELEASED AND OPERATED AS INTENDED. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER WERE MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 166,000.
I AM WRITING THIS AS MY CONCERNED I HAVEN'T HAD MY VEHICLE LESS THEN YEAR AND I HAVE NOTICED MY STEERING WHEEL WILL LOCK UP ON ME WHILE I AM DRIVING. I HAVE NOTICED IT HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES SINCE DRIVING IT AND IT SEEMS LIKE IT WAS 2-3 WEEKS APART FROM WHEN IT DO IT. I'M NOT REALLY SURE ON THE DATES OF WHEN IT HAPPENED. I TYPICALLY DRIVE MOSTLY COUNTRY. MY TYPICAL DRIVE IS 60 MILES A DAY GOING FROM WORK AND HOME.
THE STEERING WHEEL OF VEHICLE LOCKS UP WHILE DRIVING MAKING THE VEHICLE VERY DIFFICULT OR IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER. AFTER STOPPING THE VEHICLE, PUTTING THE GEAR IN PARK, AND THEN SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTARTING THE VEHICLE, THE DRIVER CAN ONCE AGAIN GAIN CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL. HOWEVER, THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING WITH INCREASING FREQUENCY, THAT IT MAKES DRIVING THE VEHICLE VERY HAZARDOUS AS YOU NEVER KNOWN WHEN THIS LOSS OF STEERING MAY OCCUR. THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL HAS HAPPENED BOTH ON CITY STREETS AND ON THE HIGHWAY, BUT APPEARS TO BE MORE NOTICEABLE WHEN TURNING BECAUSE THAT IS WHEN THE DRIVER SHOULD BE ABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. POWER STEERING JUST RANDOMLY WENT OUT WHILE DRIVING. I KNOW PREVIOUSLY THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS, HOWEVER I'VE ONLY HAD THE CAR A COUPLE YEARS AND IT'S JUST NOW A PROBLEM. IF I TURN THE CAR COMPLETELY OFF AND RESTART IT STARTS WORKING AGAIN. ALSO, THERE WAS A RECALL FOR A FRONT BEARING PART, I'M HAVING ISSUES THERE AS WELL. FRONT RIGHT.

UPON INVESTIGATION, THE CONTACT LINKED THE FAILURE TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V284000 (STEERING) HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT UPON RESTART OF THE VEHICLE, THE STEERING RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO BE DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT'S WIFE CALLED AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS UNDER RECALL FOR THE STEERING. THE CONTACT'S WIFE CALLED COVERT FORD INC. (11514 RESEARCH BLVD, AUSTIN, TX 78759) AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT UNDER. UPON INVESTIGATION, THE CONTACT LINKED THE FAILURE TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V284000(STEERING) HOWEVER, THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 115,000.
THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING HAS GONE OUT UNEXPECTEDLY. THE TECH AT THE SHOP IS VERY SURPRISED THAT MY VIN ISN'T COVERED UNDER THE RECALL FOR THE POWER STEERING. I WAS QUOTED $2,000 FOR THE REPAIR. DEFINITELY NOT WORTH THE REPAIR AT THAT COST.
ALL OFF THESE EVENTS I AM DESCRIBING HAPPENED ALL WHILE DRIVING AND STILL OCCUR WHILE IN PARK. ALL OF THESE ALSO SLOWLY PROGRESSED INTO ONE BIG ISSUE OVER A MONTH AND A HALF PERIOD. IT STARTED OFF AS MY HEADLIGHTS WERE DIMMING AND FLICKERING, THEN IT PROGRESSED TO MY DASH LIGHTS DOING THE SAME, FLICKERING AND DIMMING ON AND OFF. THEN IT STARTED AFFECTING MY AC AND HEAT, IT WOULD GET LOCKED TO STAY ON AND I WOULD HAVE IT TURNED OFF BUT IF MY GAUGES WERE IN A CERTAIN POSITION SOMETIMES IT WOULD JUST TURN ON BY ITSELF. THEN MY BATTERY LIGHT WOULD TURN ON AND OFF, AND THEN MY POWER STEERING WAS MAKING LIKE A CLICK SOUND AND IT WOULD GO IN AND OUT. ONE TIME MY LOCKS WERE GOING ON AND OFF BY THEMSELVES AS WELL. I REPLACED THE BATTERY THINKING IT WAS DYING, THAT DIDN'T HELP....

THE CONTACT SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE REPAIR WHICH WAS STILL PENDING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 49,116.
