2016 FORD EXPLORER Steering Problems

On October 17, 2021 the steering system on my 2016 explorer completely shutdown. The ABS, Hill Assist and Service Advance Trac lights all went on. The steering wheel would not turn either way. Luckily, this incident occurred in a parking lot and no injury or damage happened. I had AAA tow the car to Porter Ford, Newark DE.

The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with needing rack and pinion to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 84,000.

Driving at 20mph, going through a moderate turn and lost Power Steering. No warning lights, no noise, just total loss of Steering and I felt as if I couldn't overpower the steering until 2 seconds later I regained power steering. The same problem occurred at 10mph while coming to a stop. Once again I did not have the ability to overpower the wheel and straighten it when I tried. Luckily once again power came back and I was able to control without issue. Several complaints on the same issue and NO RECALL has been issued by Ford. If the same issue occurs at highway speed I don't know what I'll do. Ford had a Service Bulletin out for 2013-2016 Explorers that stated they would simply reprogram the module. They did not extend the coverage beyond 2018 nor did they actually replace a faulty steering rack with the coverage. This is...

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving 5 MPH and making a turn, he heard an abnormal banging sound coming from the steering wheel and the steering wheel locked up. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated as he veered to the side of the road, he was able to steer the steering wheel with no issues. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the power steering rack needed to be replaced; however, the part for the repair was not yet available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that they would follow up with the dealer. A case was opened. The vehicle was not repaired. Beginning of day; felt like I was in a major windstorm & in a constant battle with the car steering. Middle of day: Power Steering Fault light came on and feeling like I was in a major windstorm & in a constant battle with the car steering GETTING WORSE. End of the day: Then Power Steering Failure "Pull over Safely" came on.. I didn't just lose power steering. I lost TOTAL STEERING capability at 57,400 miles... Car is at dealership now. Had my 90yr old mother been driving there would have been an accident. This is gonna get someone killed. I had just dropped off my Grandson before I lost total control.

On approximately July 5th, I was driving on freeway at approximately 70mph. I approached a work zone and had to move to shoulder when I lost power steering. It continued to give me issues at higher speeds for the next 40 miles and it seemed to disappear for the next two weeks of city driving. I thought it was an isolated incident and on July 16th we took the vehicle on a family vacation and when traveling on the freeway it again lost ( and never regained) power steering but we were more than 200 miles from home and the closest Ford dealer couldn't see us until early August. It appears Ford had a prior recall for certain model year 2011-2013 Ford Explorer vehicles manufactured May 17, 2010, through February 28, 2012 for a power steering failure. The recall was due to vehicles experiencing a loss of power steering assist and required extra steering effort at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. I have a 2016 Ford Explorer and the issue appears to be occurring in later models like mine. I experienced it on July 21, 2021. I was driving on the freeway at 70mph and with no prior warning I my power steering goes out and I see the message "power steering module failure". Luckily I was able to fight the car to the shoulder, but I can only imagine what would have happened if my wife or daughter had been driving at the time. Electronic steering assist seems to fail on rainy days. Starts like a sound grinding on the bottom like it needs lubrication. Afraid to drive this thing because of other owners comments regarding the steering assist causing accidents.

While driving around a corner at a speed of 45 miles an hour the power steering quit working. The message on the instrument panel stated steering fault. I no longer had power steering and it was very hard to pull the vehicle over. I shut off the motor and then restarted the vehicle and i now had power steering. It is currently at Varney Ford in Newport Maine having the whole steering assembly replaced at a cost of 2300.00. From my research I have found that the steering assembly is located near the catalytic converter which gets every every hot, and can damage the internal circuit board. This is a very scary safety concern! I do not have the invoice for the repair, as it is being worked on July 19th or July 20th

I was driving down the highway into a turn and my power steering failed causing the SUV to want to recall into a straight pattern almost causing me to crash my truck into a barrier wall with my child inside. With the sudden ability to fight the wheel back into a turning position I was able to narrowly avoid crashing with my child. Numerous indicators displayed (Steering Assist Fault, Service Advance Track, Hill Start Assist not available). I immediately took it to a Ford dealer , where they advised me that the power steering rack has electronically failed.

Driving on express way going 70 mph and vehicle dash started lighting up and beeping with a bunch of different things and lost power steering. It said “power steering fault” was in construction and it was extremely scary. Thankfully there was a dealership on the exit and they said it was the power steering rack.

With less than 75k miles, the steering began to grind when turning. We had to get an entirely new rack and pinion unit replaced for over $2400. Thousands of 2016 Explorers have reported this problem but it is still not been deemed a recall. Recently, at 84K miles, the clutch on the AC compressor went out causing a $720 bill for a new compressor. We have also just found out the water pump is now bad and appears to be defective. In fact there was a class action lawsuit in 2020 regarding these defective pumps but this wonderful government we pay exorbitant taxes to, threw the case out on technicalities. Absolutely shameful.

I was driving my car and received a warning that the Power Steering System Failure. Within a few minutes, the power steering in the car went out. Had to have the vehicle towed to mechanic. The mechanic reported the code of C200D-49. 2 Ford Dealerships stated that they had never heard of any issues yet my mechanic recently had another Ford vehicle in with the same situation.

The electric power steering went out. On the way to get my 3 month old son from daycare, I was merging onto the highway next to a semi and a warning came on letting me know there was a steering issue. After picking my son up from daycare, I started my vehicle again and it said power steering failure. I could hardly drive the vehicle and did not feel comfortable since my son was with me. I have since taken it to our local Ford dealer and the module must be replaced.

Driving down Interstate and steering started to get sticky. Steering wheel would grab, be difficult to turn, then release. Suddenly the 'traction control' light on the dashboard flashed and then within 2-3 minutes the 'Loss of Steering' dashboard message flashed and the steering wheel froze. Fortunately we were on a flat/straight stretch of highway or this could have been catastrophic. This could easily result in a fatal crash. We had the vehicle towed to nearest Ford dealership and they diagnosed that the 'Steering gear seized internally' and the vehicle was repaired at a cost exceeding $2000.00. Tow Truck Operator communicated they have never seen a steering column completely freeze like this one did. I have the service invoice on file.

The rack and pinion steering had to be replaced in my 2016 Ford Explorer Limited. I had a difficult time controlling the steering and was fearful with my 4 kids in the car but made it home. I had it replaced and had to take a loan out to cover the $2500 price tag. The car has mainly highway miles on at 109,000. I am hoping to have this reimbursed by Ford because what I am looking up this is a MAJOR problem with many Ford vehicles.

As I was driving in the highway the steer assist fault warning came on and the steering wheel locked. I was not able to turn the wheel without force. I pulled over and turned vehicle off to see if it was a malfunction, but the stabilitrack and steer assist light remained on and steering wheel was still very hard to move.

THE CAR DOES NOT HAVE 50K MILES YET. I DO HAVE THE REPAIR FOR THE STRUTS. HAVE NOT REPAIRED THE RACK AND PINION YET.

I TOUCHED THE STEERING WHEEL BOTTOMS FOR AND WHEN I TRUN THE STEERING WHEEL I HERE A POPING SOUND. I'M SACAR IT MAY LOCK AND THEN CRASH. WHILE IN MENTION. CITY AND HIGHWAYS.

MY EXPLORER STARTED HAVING POPPING NOISES WHEN TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT. IT IS BAD ENOUGH TO GIVE SIGNIFICANT FEEDBACK IN THE STEERING WHEEL AND VIBRATIONS THROUGHOUT THE FRONT PASSENGER AREA. WHEN I JACK UP THE FRONT END UNLOADING THE WHEELS, THERE IS NO NOISE OR POPPING. WITH FULL WEIGHT ON THE WHEELS, WHEN THE WHEEL IS TURNED SLIGHTLY LEFT AND RIGHT AND GET SIGNIFICANT POPPING AND CRACKING FEEDBACK VIA THE TIE RODS, THE NOISE HAS PROGRESSED INTO THE STEERING WHEEL FREEZING IN PLACE WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. NOT BEING ABLE TO CONTROL THE CAR IS A MAJOR LIFE SAFETY ISSUE IF NOT ADDRESSED THIS HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE MAJOR INJURIES OR DEATH. IF IT HAS NOT ALREADY. THE DEALER IS AWARE OF THE ISSUES AND I FIND COUNTLESS ONLINE INSTANCES OF THIS MECHANICAL DEFECT.

I WAS STATIONARY IN A PARKING LOT AND STARTED THE VEHICLE TO FIND MESSAGES STEERING ASSIST FAULT SERVICE REQUIRED, HILL START ASSIST NOT AVAILABLE, SERVICE ADVANCE TRAC, AND TERRAIN MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FAULT ALL DISPLAYED ON THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. THERE WAS NO POWER STEERING ASSISTANCE AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS INCREDIBLY HARD TO TURN. IN THE DAYS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE I NOTICED ON A FEW OCCASIONS THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD NOT CENTER AFTER EXITING A 90 DEGREE TURN AND I WOULD HAVE TO PROVIDE INPUT TO STRAIGHTEN THE WHEELS. THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING RACK HAS FAILED AND THERE ARE NOT EVEN ANY PARTS AVAILABLE FOR THIS, NOR DOES IT APPEAR FORD HAS ACKNOWLEDGE THEY HAVE A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM..

WENT TO THE BEACH THIS PAST SATURDAY AND AS I WAS PULLING INTO THE TURNING LANE FOR THE STATE PARK AND ALARM WENT OFF SAYING DRIVE ASSIST CONTROL FAILURE, AND NUMEROUS THINGS THAT NO LONGER WORK, SINCE THEN THERE HAS BEEN NO POWER STEERING AND IT WAS A MIRACLE WE GOT IT HOME WHICH WAS AN HOUR AND A HALF AWAY, HAD THIS HAPPENED WHILE GOING FASTER THEN I COULD OF LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND I WAS GOING ABOUT 10 MPH WHEN IT ALARMED. THE PICTURES SHOW WAS ALERTS EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE IS STARTED NOW. THIS MORNING THE STEERING WHEEL WAS NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO MOVE SO MY GIRLFRIEND WHO DRIVES THE EXPLORER HAS TO USE THE BACK UP CAR THAT CAN'T HOLD ALL OF OUR KIDS.

THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED HOWEVER, THE REPLACEMENT PART WAS DEFECTIVE. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 101,509.

AS MY WIFE WAS DRIVING SHE HEARD A POP NOISE, THEN SHE WENT TURN AND THE STEERING LOCKED UP WHICH FORCED HER TO STAY IN HEAD ON TRAFFIC. AFTER FORCING THE WHEEL BACK AND FORTH SHE WAS ABLE TO GET STEERING BACK AND TOOK THE SUV TO A LOCAL SHOP. IT WAS THEN DETERMINED THAT THE STEERING GEAR WAS BAD. THIS HAPPENED WHEN OUR VEHICLE ONLY HAD ROUGHLY 60,000 MILES. THANKFULLY NO ONE HIT HER HEAD ON. THE STEERING GEAR WAS REPLACED.

THIS VEHICLE ALMOST TOOK MY LIFE THE OTHER DAY. ALMOST JUST AS SCARY IS THE FACT THAT THIS ISSUE IS WIDELY REPORTED ON THESE VEHICLES FROM 2011 ON AND FORD HAS ZERO RECALL FOR IT. I WAS ON THE FREEWAY THE OTHER DAY GOING ABOUT 70MPH WHEN INSIDE OF 10 SECONDS (WHILE ON A BEND IN THE ROAD) MY DASH LIT UP AND MY STEERING LOCKED!!! AT 70 MPH!!! I ALMOST HIT 3 CARS WHILE TRYING TO SLOW DOWN AS I COULD ONLY GO STRAIGHT. WHEN I SAY LOCKED, I MEAN AS IF IT WAS CEMENTED IN PLACE. THE DASH READS 'STEERING LOSS STOP SAFELY', 'SERVICE ADVANCETRAC', 'HILL START ASSIST NOT AVAILABLE'. THIS COULD HAVE LIKED NOT ONLY ME BUT OTHER MOTORISTS THIS DAY. ON TOP OF THE INCREDIBLE CONCERN OF SAFETY, THE 'HEAD IN THE SAND' MENTALITY THAT FORD HAS ON THIS ISSUE IS DISGUSTING, AS THEY'RE ALSO LEAVING...

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 61,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

WIFE WAS SHOPPING IN ANOTHER CITY AND STEERING LOCKED UP WHEN SHE STARTED IT AFTER BEING PARKED IN A LOT ,WARNING SIGNALS CAME ON . TURNED EXPLORER OFF AND RESTARTED CAR AND DROVE FINE AND DROVE HOME 50 MILES . WENT TO HOCKEY GAME AT AN ARENA , CAME OUT AND STARTED CAR AND STEERING WAS HARD TO STEER ( NO POWER STEERING ) BUT MANAGED TO DRIVE HOME 2 MILES AND PUT IN GARAGE . LOOKED FOR POWER STEERING RESEVOUR AND THERE WAS NONE UNDER HOOD THINKING LOW ON FLUID . LOOKED IN OWNERS MANUAL AND SAW -- ALL ELECTRONIC ! I LOST MY STEERING COMPLETELY AND HAD TO TAKE MY VEHICLE INTO A SHOP. THE RACK AND PINION FOR THE STEERING OF MY VEHICLE HAS GONE OUT COMPLETELY AT ONLY 80,000 MILES. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ISSUE, AS IT COULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS CRASH. WHILE STATIONARY OR MOVING SLOWLY, THE WHEEL IS HARDER TO TURN AND MAKES A LOUD SLIDING/GRINDING SOUND. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND WHEN I BEGAN TO TURN OFF THE EXIT I BEGAN HEARING A LOUD GRINDING SOUND COMING FROM MY STEERING COLUMN. IT WAS ALSO EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO TURN THE WHEEL. DRIVING 45MPH SUDDENLY LOST STEERING CONTROL, WAS ABLE TO DECELERATE AND GET OFF THE ROAD, THEN SLOWLY GET HOME. AFTER THIS IT SEEMED TO WORK FINE. HOWEVER, EVERY DAY, A LOUD POPPING CREAKING SOUND THAT YOU CAN EVEN FEEL IS COMING FROM THE ELECTRIC POWER-ASSIST STEERING. ESPECIALLY NOTICEABLE WHEN PULLING IN OR OUT OF A PARKING LOT/DRIVEWAY/GARAGE. LOCAL SHOP SAYS IT WILL COST ABOUT $2500 TO REPLACE THE ELECTRIC POWER-ASSIST STEERING RACK AND PINION, AND IT MUST THEN BE PROGRAMMED TO THE VEHICLE. THIS EXPLORER HAS 78,000 MILES ON IT. THANKS.

I TOOK MY 2016 FORD EXPLORER XLT ON DEC 29TH 2020 TO GET A OIL CHANGE ETC. THEY HAD THE VEHICLE ALL DAY EVEN THOUGH I TOOK IT IN AT 7AM. I PICK IT UP A 4:45 PM THEN DRIVE IT HOME BECAUSE I WORK FROM HOME I DID NOT DRIVE IT AGAIN UNTIL SATURDAY JAN 9TH 2021, WHILE DRIVING IT THAT MORNING I REALIZED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL WAS HARD TO STEER AND THE TRUCK WOULD MAKE NOISES WHEN I TURN THE STEERING IN EITHER DIRECTION. HE TOLD ME WHILE MY FATHER WAS ON THE PHONE THAT HE BELIEVES IT THE RACK AND PINION AND HE CAN'T TAKE IT BECAUSE THEY ARE BUSY AND IT'S OKAY FOR ME TO DRIVE IT. I ALSO TOLD HIM AT THAT TIME I...

WENT TO VISIT FAMILY ON CHRISTMAS MORNING AND WHILE DRIVING POWER ASSIST WENT OUT AND POPPED UP THE DISPLAY WARNINGS. DROVE IT ANOTHER 8 MILES TO DESTINATION. THEN OVER THE SUMMER I NOTICED WHEN I TURN GOING AT SLOW SPEEDS THE CAR WOULD MAKE A LOUD POP AND SOMETIMES THE STEERING WOULD GET STUCK WHEN IT POPED, SO I DID SOME RESEARCH A THOUGH MAYBE IT WAS MY TOE LINKS. SO I JUST REPLACED THEM AND THIS CAR IS STILL TERRIFYING TO DRIVE IN THE SNOW. I HAVE SEEN THAT A CONCERNING NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS SAME ISSUE AND THEY END UP REPLACING THEIR RACK AND...

ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING HAS FAILED WHILE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION TURNING ON A HIGHWAY. IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROADWAY DUE TO LOSS OF POWER STEERING.

POWER STEERING BEGAN TO GO WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY, MAKING ME FEEL LIKE I WAS LOSING CONTROL. WAS ABLE TO GET CAR HOME AND ENDED UP COMPLETELY LOCKING UP NEEDING TO BE TOWED FROM MY DRIVEWAY. I NEED TO HAVE STEERING RACK REPLACED FOR OVER $1800 JUST FOR THE PART ON A VEHICLE WITH ONLY 80,000 MILES ON IT.

WHILE OPERATING VEHICLE AT HIGH SPEEDS THE ADVANCETRAC LIGHT, TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT, AND NO STEERING ASSIST LIGHT CAME ON. BEFORE I COULD GET OFF THE INTERSTATE I LOST MOST OF MY STEERING. LUCKILY IT WAS AT NIGHT AND NOT TO MANY ON THE INTERSTATE. IT WAS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR MYSELF AND MY FAMILY. VERY LUCKY WE DIDN'T GET IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. IT WAS WORSE THAN LOOSING POWER STEERING WITH A HYDRAULIC POWER SYSTEM. THERE WAS NO CONTROL AVAILABLE WHILE TRYING TO GET OVER.

I WAS DRIVING TO WORK AND MY CAR MADE A SCREECHY SOUND ONCE I GOT ON THE HIGHWAY AND WENT 45 OR OVER THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED TO SHAKE. IN A WAY IT FELT THE STEERING WHEEL OR THE PART THAT HOLDS THE FRONT TIRES WAS LOOSE. IT FELT LIKE IF I WENT ANY FASTER I'D LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR.
