The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated while the vehicle was idling, he heard an abnormal sound coming from the engine. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact called the local dealer and made them aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 129,000.

The vehicle started to make a low rattling noise that grew louder each time the vehicle was idling. We now believe the flexplate is cracked. Ford has sent out a letter stating they are aware the flexplate may crack but they are not willing to cover repairs on the vehicle after a certain time period, which has already passed. They state in the letter to not bring vehicles in unless they are making a rattling noise.

Car has a little over 100,000 miles 2017 Ford edge. Engine light came on, took to a Ford dealership where we were informed that coolant was leaking into the cylinders and would need to replace the whole engine. From researching this issue I have discovered that this seems to be a big problem with not just my car but others as well and ones with less miles and yet Ford will not pay for replacement or issue a recall on this issue. The car is sitting at the dealership now as we think about what should be done next.

In 2016, I purchased a new Ford Edge. In June 2023, I'm informed by Ford Certified Personnel that the engine has a "Coolant Inclusion" issue requiring replacement with a new engine. This problem caused by a design flaw in the engine that Ford was aware of in 2009 and continued to install without repair or recall. Research information shows it can cause overheating and possible vehicle fire. My service records can be verified with Brinson Ford, Athens TX. [XXX], Service Advisor. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
#11529560 |
Rough idling on start up and engine light came on. After taking car to a local repair shop, mechanic noticed that vehicle was consuming coolant and the engine was cracked. They advised taking it to dealer. Ford dealer confirmed diagnosis. Vehicle had 93304 miles on it and Ford has a Technical service bulletin out on it. Was originally quoted $6,000 to replace engine. After a lot of negotiating with Ford Customer Satisfaction Program, we paid $1,685 to replace engine. Ford has known about this issue for quite a while and in my opinion, should have issued a recall. There have been reports from others that the engine has caught fire.

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that while accelerating while making a left or right turn, the brake pedal was depressed, and the contact heard liquid rotating coming from the hood of the vehicle. Additionally, the contact stated that while shifted into reverse(R), the vehicle started to shudder. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that coolant had leaked into cylinder #2. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was provided information for TSB Number: 22-2133 to repair the vehicle. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.

Coolant leak to inside the piston engine
#11526276 |
Coolant is leaking into the engine cylinders and now the engine does not run.
#11525923 |
My 2016 Ford Edge with a 2.0L engine has a crack in the upper compartment of #1 cylinder. This is allowing coolant intrusion in to the cylinder causing a misfire. Ford has issued a service bulletin for the issue 22-2229. My vehicle has 89615 miles on it, and has been properly maintained over the years. This seems like from a quick google search is a wide spread problem with these vehicles. Will there be a recall or some type of relief from the cost of this repair?
#11525227 |
My car has 66,000 miles on it. It was bought on 9-10-2016 brand new. On 5/21/23 my car would not start. I had it towed to my mechanic who diagnosed coolant intrusion in cylinder 2. I had it towed to the dealer after Ford confirmed it would be covered under TSB 19-2346 on 5-26-23. This Tsb-19-2346 affects thousands of cars, with the early ecoboost engines. The cars are suddenly catching on fire or seizing while being driven!!!! I had it towed to Ford who told me the Transmission was bad and it would be covered under Ford's #22N12 bulletin on 5-30-23. I was shocked the transmission was also bad! I than asked the dealer what about the motor? It's seized as I told you 4 days earlier due to coolant intrusion? The mechanic will check that also, I will call Ford again, re the motor. 2 days later, after I...

When you start the car it acts as if it wants to bogg down and stall out going down road. Took car to ford and they said,"oh, we have a service bulletin on this car for coolant getting into the engine causing engine to over heat or misfire, it is a defect in the 2.0 ecoboost engines, and we have to replace your engine for 7,600." This is in multiple vehicles, class action law suits, engines over heating, some catch fire. Ford needs to be investigated for defective motors in these vehicles.
#11521748 | Crash
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, she heard a rattling sound under the hood of the vehicle. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was then taken to Auto Zone where it was placed on a diagnostic machine and the contact was informed that the vapor canister was faulty. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine long block had cracked and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, the contact stated that prior to the failure, she had notified the dealer that she had lightly tapped the accelerator pedal however, the vehicle quickly accelerated without warning. The contact applied extra pressure on the brake pedal to stop the vehicle however, the contact lightly struck the bumper of another vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle...

2-28-2023 Engine Failed on Ford Edge 2016. Car failed on freeway I-91 South in Hartford, Connecticut--engine seized. Informed Car was Diagnosed with Engine Failure Due to Coolant Intrusion Was provided by Balise Ford a replacement/repair cost of engine of approx. $6,750.00 3-6-2023 Learned Ford Aware of Issues with design defect in engine causing coolant intrusion into the cylinders and causing engine block failure Ford Motor Inc., issued Service Bulletin 2222-29 to the Ford Service Stations Globally, which warned of the issue. Service Bulletin outlined the defect was causing engine failure and in some cases, igniting the engine (causing vehicle fires) As a consumer, I have a right to know if the part replaced was a newly designed part, or of one with the same design flaw. The defective part, as outlines in Ford’s Service Bulletin 2222-29 issued Globally to Ford service stations, this part has cause failure and seize of...

Coolant leaking in cylinders, white exhaust smoke, rough idle, coolant smell, diagnostic trouble code P0303 due to misfire. Safety hazard due to risk of engine failure or engine fire.
#11517963 |
The radiator fluid was disappearing. Could not find a leak. Took it to the dealer and they indicated that the fluid was leaking into #2 cylinder from a crack in the engine long block. Therefore, if the vehicle was continued to be driven it could cause a potential fire. Ford has a TSB on this vehicle( TSB # 22-2229 and 22-2133. It is now undriveable and Ford has not done a recall. Cost to repair is $8,600.00!!!!!! Ford dealer says it is a manufacturer defect.
#11516909 |
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated that vehicle had failed to accelerate upon a cold start as the check engine light appeared on the instrument panel. The vehicle was initially taken to an independent mechanic where they diagnosed a crack in cylinder #1 which caused coolant to leak into the engine. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer and the diagnostic result was confirmed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and the manufacturer agreed to cover a portion of the repair. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.
#11516607 |
Check engine light came on. Ford dealership diagnosed as coolant leaking into cylinder, compromising the integrity of the engine. Fix: replace engine. This is a common and known problem with the EcoBoost engine. This could have caused an engine fire or catastrophic engine failure while driving.
#11513278 |
My 2016 Ford Edge Titanium had a blown brake line so I took it in for repairs which is where I discovered that there was a head gasket leak and that the coolant reservoir was empty, and the axil was leaking. There were no puddles or other obvious indicators that there was anything wrong with the head gasket. No engine lights/codes were showing up. The mechanic at the Ford Dealership quoted me $5k to fix the head gasket and $10k for all of the repairs to include the brake line and 4 new tires. I have owned this car for 4 years and have had it serviced regularly.

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer stated the engine was misfiring. The contact stated cylinder #3 coil and spark plug was replaced; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the dealer stated that coolant was leaking into the engine, and that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not replaced. The manufacturer was contacted, and the manufacturer stated that they are aware of the failure and that there was no recall associated with the failure. The failure mileage was 79,274. The contact stated that the engine was replaced and Ford covered a portion of the repair costs.

This vehicle only has 71,000 miles on it. Car began running rough, then Engine light came on. I took it to a local repair shop and was discovered to have Cylinder Mis-fire P0304 code. There was also white smoke coming from the tailpipe. They looked into the cylinder and saw that coolant had breached the cylinder. They found a Technical Service Bulletin for this exact problem, https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10162071-0001.pdf. The fix is to replace the engine, which rough estimates indicate upwards of $8,000. This issue should be an official recall. I’ve noticed many complaints on this site referencing the same issue.
#11499380 |
My 2016 Ford Edge SEL AWD 2.0L (65,000 Miles on engine) Ecoboost Engine started to experience a rough idle on a cold start, which would run normal after about 15 seconds, I also noticed the smell off coolant and a low level coolant in the reservoir but could not find a leak. These symptoms went on for about a month, then one day the engine light popped on while driving. I attached my Code Reader which resulted in a P0302 Engine Misfire Code. I attempted to remove the #2 spark plug. The spark plug was seized in the engine head. After research on-line. I found out this is a known issue by Ford for this engine. Engine coolant leaking into the cylinders (a design flaw which was corrected in 2019 for new vehicles). Technical Service Bulletin 22-2229. For Motor Company is only repairing vehicles under warranty. So consumers like myself...

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled without warning; however, the contact was able to coast the vehicle off the roadway. The vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the contact stated that approximately 3 years later, the failure recurred. The contact stated that while idling at a stop light, he depressed the accelerator pedal and the engine stalled without warning. The contact then stated that after approximately one hour, he was able to restart the vehicle; however, the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. The contact stated that the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired....

I had check engine light come on August 2022. Car was rough running at the start up and outputted white smoke. September 2022 brought to Ford Service Department, error code for piston misfire. They changed the spark plugs. Check engine light came back on in October 2022. Brought back to the Ford Service Department, engine leaking coolant and told I need a new engine. Repair is scheduled for December 2022. The mileage is 48,347 and regularly maintained/serviced.

The engine needs replacing. With no warning my check engine light came on. Car had trouble starting and then progressed into smoke coming from tailpipes. Took car to Ford dealer. Told need new engine, there is a flaw in engine block allowing coolant to leak into cylinders. Car has only 72000 miles. Could have resulted in fire if I continued to drive it. Ford needs to issue a recall on these engines immediately.
#11491159 |
Engine malfunction due to engine coolant leaking in to #2 cylinder. Check engine warning light came on intermittently. Car didn’t pass New York State Emissions test. Car can’t be re-registered in NYS without passing Emissions test. Had car towed to Ford Service Center for diagnosis. Ford diagnosis - car engine and assembly needs to be replaced with re-designed long block engine for an estimated repair cost of $6637 plus tax. Ford is not covering engine defect that resulted in engine coolant leaking into #2 cylinder causing misfire and engine check warning light to come on. Due to this design fault, Ford should issue a recall on our 2016 Ford Edge as the car is unsafe to drive. Ford should cover the cost of the engine repair, parts and labor, due to this design fault.

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the vehicle was shaking and was unable to accelerate properly. The contact stated that after waiting for the shaking to cease, the vehicle drove as needed. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was determined to be a faulty head gasket that was leaking coolant. The dealer stated that the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer confirmed the report from the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 49,000.

Check engine light turned on after the whole car rumbled and seemed to struggle to start. Took car into dealership to get code checked out and it was a misfire. We made the next available appointment at the dealership which was over a month later, but were told to not bring in the car again unless another misfire happened before the appointment. More misfires started occuring and more frequently about 2 weeks later, since the dealership had no availability, I brought the car into my own mechanic who told us it was a coolant leak into cylinders 2 and 4 causing the misfires, it was most likely a head gasket issue. Finally brought it to the dealer appointment who went radio silent unless we called for almost a week. They intially stated that Ford would cover the costs since its a known issue with the engine in this model and...

Misfire in cynlinder 2 due to coolant leak and crack in engine. Resulting in new engine over 9000$ dollars and ford ignoring issue despite thousands of complaints and similar defects with this model.
#11485206 |
Check engine light came on. Started to misfire when ignition was turned on. Some misfiring when driving. A couple days later, white smoke started coming out of the exhaust. Took car to mechanic who told me I had a crack in the engine block and coolant was leaking into the cylinder. The engine had to be replaced.

I bought a new 2016 Ford Edge and have it serviced regularly at the dealer. My service record is exemplary and it is documented. My car has 94K miles. I have had work done by the dealer recently (new tires, new axle) and there was no advisement of an engine issue, absolutely nothing was said. About 7 days ago I got a warning light out of the blue, and took it in immediately. I was told it was a "catastrophic engine failure" due to coolant leaking into the engine because the coolant pump failed. I was told "it just happens." As I researched this on the web I discovered that there are thousands (possibly tens of thousands, the amount on the web is overwhelming) of people with the same catastrophe and outcomes that were all very similar: engine replacements cost 10K and can take months -- one fellow has been...

There is a known problem with coolant leaking into the cylinder damaging the gasket. The only fix is to replace the entire engine block at a cost (in my case) of $8361. This seems unreasonable of a 6 year old car with 64,000 miles on it. This is a known problem to Ford as evidenced by the necessity of Techical Service Bulletin 19-2208 issued by Ford in June 2019. Fortunately, My engine light came on alerting me to the problem. That apparently doesn’t always happen meaning the engine could have stopped working while I was driving. Ford dealers are still selling these vehicles used on their lots with no need to disclose this problem because no recall has been ordered. Hoping that this can be rectified to help out a significant number of drivers who’ve had to fix their vehicles at a substantial cost and to force Ford to stop...

On May 13, 2022, my Ford Edge was taken to the Local Ford Dealer for a spoiled coil. At 52,000 miles, the coolant had leaked into the cylinders and caused the engine block to crack. This resulted in me needing a whole new engine. Thankfully, I had taken out an extended warranty on my vehicle or it would have cost me over $7500. I was told by the dealership that this is a known problem with these Ecoboost engines. I have always taken excellent care of my ford edge and I cannot believe Ford has not been made to recall these engines. Most people don't have an extended warranty and they should not have to pay thousands of dollars for an obvious faulty engine.

The flex plate is cracked on my Ford Edge. The crack could have caused it to break completely and I would have lost control of the vehicle. The problem has been confirmed by an independent service center. There was no warning lights or messages displayed; just a loud knocking noise coming from the engine.

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start properly for a few seconds. The contact stated that there was an abnormal fuel odor inside the cabin of the vehicle. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated she continued to experience the failure until August 10, 2022, when the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic who associated the failure with TSB: 14-0180 & 19-2346. The contact called the local dealer and left a voicemail. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 74,350.
#11478530 |
Engine blown due to coolant leaking inside the engine.
#11478326 |
At first inspection I was told it was a blown head gasket due to coolant leaking in motor. When taken apart the big block is cracked. Is going to be a entire motor replacement. Car only has 91,447 and has had regular services.
#11477036 |
Car has over 89000 miles and maintained regularly. I am the only owner and kept in garage. Check engine light came on which had a code of P0302, P0303, P0304. Mechanic confirmed coolant has leaked into cylinder and has caused crack with his borescope. Only fix is an entire engine replacement. I have no alternative but to get replacement car. This has cost me thousands in unplanned expenses to purchase a replacement before I am ready and the lost value on my vehicle due to this issue. This has apparently been known for years and no communications from Ford on this was ever received. I find this unacceptable for a company to allow this defect to go ignored.

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving approximately 30 MPH and slowing down, the engine then began to idle roughly while stopped at a traffic signal. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer who diagnosed that there was coolant in the cylinders. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

I noticed my coolant level was roughly an inch below the minimum line on 6/25/22. I filled my coolant to the max line. My check engine light appeared 6/28/22 for cylinder 2 misfire. I replaced all 4 spark plugs and the coil for #2, and the error message was still reading after the parts were swapped, while the vehicle was off. A few days later I noticed my coolant was again an inch below the minimum line, so I refilled my coolant (refilled roughly 5 times until today, 7/21/22). It always dropped and held to an inch below the minimum line. My check engine light reappeared on 7/12/22 so I took vehicle for diagnostics 7/21/22 at Inver Grove Ford, MN 55087. Tech confirmed vehicle is still misfiring for cylinder #2 so they removed the coil and smelled coolant entering the combustion area, leading them to insert a camera and saw...

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated that the vehicle was unable to start-up as needed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with coolant intrusion into the engine. The dealer informed the contact that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 143,000.

#2 cylinder went bad, car doesn’t want to start and when it does start it shakes until black smoke is finally gone from exhaust and it begins to idle correctly. Dealership says full engine replacement on a 2016 Edge with eco boost with only 134,000 miles on it!!
#11473948 |
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while the vehicle was at an independent mechanic for an oil change, the mechanic diagnosed that there was a coolant leak in cylinder #1, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 83,000.
#11472121 |
2016 Ford Edge had engine light come on. Ford dealer found coolant in engine and I was told by Ford dealer it was a misfire in engine cylinder 4 and that I would need a new engine and it would be a $7300-$7500 repair. Later, I found class action lawsuit regarding this issue. Asked Ford for financial help and they denied my request. I haven't decided if I will fix this issue at this time.
#11471700 |
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while the vehicle was stationary, there was an abnormal rattling sound coming from the engine. There was no warning light illuminated. The failure persisted and the contact took the vehicle to the dealer who diagnosed the vehicle with a defective flex plate. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 103,000.

May 31, 2022 My check-engine light came on a few days earlier. I took it in to my automotive repair shop for a diagnostic to determine the issue. It was determined that cylinder #4 was misfiring. The coil was identified as faulty and replaced. Diagnostic cost: $149.99 Replacement coil parts and labor: $163.75 June 2, 2022 Check-engine light comes on again. automotive repair shop replaces the spark plug in cylinder #4 as a precaution, even though the spark plugs were less than a year old. No charge. June 6, 2022 Check-engine light comes on again. This time I mentioned to the mechanic that the car briefly misfires after it sits overnight. I could also smell a coolant odor. This was their “ah-hah” moment. They removed the plug from cylinder #4, pressurized the coolant system and noticed coolant leaking into the cylinder. A phone call to Ford confirmed that this was...
