The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the check engine warning light remained illuminated and there was black exhaust smoke coming from the exhaust pipes. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle had experienced excessive oil consumption. The vehicle was taken to the local mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The local dealer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.
MY 2007 TOYOTA CAMRY IS BLOWING WHITE POWDER (ALUMINUM OXIDE) WHEN THE AIR CONDITIONING/HEAT IS COMING OUT OF THE VENTS. ONLINE RESEARCH POINTS OUT TO THE ANTI-MOLD, EXPERIMENTAL CODING THAT TOYOTA PUT ON THE EVAPORATOR FANS, AND THIS IS WHAT IS CAUSING THE ISSUE. HOWEVER, TOYOTA DOES NOT WANT TO ADMIT THIS CODING WAS PUT ON THE VEHICLES IN 2007, AND THERE IS NO OFFICIAL RECALL ABOUT THIS ISSUE. AT THE SAME TIME, THE LONG-TERM EXPOSURE TO ALUMINUM OXIDE COULD LEAD TO LUNG DAMAGE. I WAS WONDERING WHAT CAN BE DONE IN A CASE LIKE THIS. PLEASE ADVISE. THE CONTACT HAD TO PULL THE VEHICLE OVER, PLACE IT INTO PARK AND THEN BACK INTO DRIVE IN ORDER FOR IT TO OPERATE NORMALLY. I BOUGHT THIS CAR BRAND NEW IN 2007 AND HAVE BEEN HAVING ISSUES WITH IT SINCE 2009 WITH THE CAR BURNING OIL. DURING REPLACEMENT OF THE TIRES ON THIS VEHICLE, THE MECHANIC OBSERVED OIL LEAKS ON BOTH OF THE FRONT STRUTS ON THIS CAR. ALTHOUGH THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THIS CONDITION WAS OBSERVED, THE LEAKS MUST HAVE BEEN PRESENT FOR SOME TIME BECAUSE THIS CONDITION PROBABLY CONTRIBUTED TO THE DETERIORATION OF THE TIRES. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER, THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WITHIN A MINUTE OF THE SOUND, FOUND THE STEERING TOTALLY LOCKED AND DIDNOT MOVE LEFT OR RIGHT AND NEED TO APPLY FORCE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE TO STOP ON THE HIGHWAY. 2,000 MILES AFTER AN OIL CHANGE I NOTICED THAT MY OIL LIGHT WOULD COME ON SPORADICALLY. I CHECKED THE OIL AND IT WAS THREE QUARTS LOW. THE CAR ONLY HOLD FOUR QUARTS OF OIL, SO THIS WAS ESPECIALLY CONCERNING. A MECHANIC CHECKED OUT MY CAR AND SAID THAT THERE WERE NO LEAKS, EVERYTHING WAS STILL FACTORY SEALED, AND HE DIDN'T KNOW WHY IT WAS CONSUMING SO MUCH OIL. I HAD AN OIL CHANGE 1000 MILES LATER, AND 2000 MILES AFTER THAT I WAS LOW ON OIL AGAIN! ACCORDING TO THINGS I'VE READ, THIS CAR CONSUMES ROUGHLY 1 QUART OF OIL EVERY 1,200 MILES IT IS DRIVEN. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND ADVISED THAT THERE WERE NO OIL LEAKS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,000.

MY CAMRY HAS EXCESSIVE OIL USAGE. IT USES ABOUT 1 QT EVERY 600 MILES. THE PROBLEM STARTED AT APPROX 61000 MILES. CAR CURRENTLY HAS 96,000 MILES ON IT AND I PUT A QUART OF OIL IN FOR EVERY 2 TANKS OF GAS. I SEE THAT TOYOTA ISSUED A TSB FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT WILL ONLY FIX IT UNDER WARRANTY. THEY ARE REPLACING THE PISTONS AND RINGS WITH A NEW DESIGN BECAUSE THE OLD DESIGN IS A FAILURE. IT IS AN ENGINEERING/DESIGN DEFECT AND SHOULD BE FIXED UNDER A RECALL. *KB

WITHOUT MUCH THOUGHT, I WOULD ADD OIL AS NEEDED. AS THE MILEAGE START TO RACK UP, THE PROBLEM IS TOO OBVIOUS AND IT IS GETTING WORSE. AT THE BEGINNING, I DID NOT KNOW HOW MUCH OIL WAS BEING CONSUMED. NOW THE VEHICLE HAS 100,000 MILES ON IT AND THE ENGINE WILL FAIL PREMATURELY. I HAVE CONTACTED THE TOYOTA'S CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER AS WELL AS MY LOCAL DEALER WITH NO SUCCESS. THE LOCAL DEALER KNOWS OF THE PROBLEM BUT SAYS TOYOTA WILL NOT ASSIST OUT OF WARRANTY CUSTOMERS. WHEN I WENT FOR AN OIL CHANGE AT AROUND 60000 MILES, THE MECHANICS COMMENTED THAT MY ENGINE OIL LEVEL IS VERY LOW (NEARLY EMPTY). HE FOUND NO SIGNS OF LEAKING. AFTER THE OIL CHANGE, I CHECKED THE LEVEL TO MAKE SURE IT IS FULL. AFTER 600 MILES, THE MARK IS NEAR THE LOW END, WHICH MEANS ABOUT 1.2 QUART CONSUMPTION (ACCORDING TO USER MANUAL). *KB
THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED USED FROM A PRIVATE PARTY IN AUGUST 2011. I DID AN OIL CHANGE SOON AFTER, ON 8/21 WITH MILEAGE AT 57,336. ON 11/3 MY WIFE REPORTED THE OIL LIGHT COMING ON WHEN BRAKING. I CHECKED THE OIL LEVEL, AND THERE WAS JUST A TINY BIT ON THE TIP OF THE DIPSTICK. IT TOOK 3 FULL QUARTS TO BRING IT BACK UP TO FULL ON THE DIPSTICK.
