Hyundai extended warranty on 2011-2014 due to premature engine failure. On [XXX] my car suddenly lost all power and died on in breakdown lane of highway. Currently vehicle is at colonial Hyundai in new london CT awaiting a decision that premature engine failure issue that falls within warranty is the issue. When tow trunk driver dropped off car at mechanic he smelt smoke from under the hood he informed me INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
2013 Hyundai Sonata engine caught on fire after being replaced TWICE.
Vehicle had been low on oil for multiple months and was brought to the dealership and then to independent body shop for repair. Low oil light NEVER came on, but vehicle initially leaking oil (puddle on floor under car). Car serviced every 3 months/miles. While driving on highway, engine started knocking, and the MIL (malfunction indicator light started blinking). Knocking got louder and all sensor lights illuminated. Pulled off side of road and waited for tow truck. Attempted to drive to safer location off highway to wait. Car towed home. Would not start next day. Jumped battery and MIL light came back on and knocking sound continued. Car towed to mechanic who performed diagnostic and advised that the Rod Knock was broken and engine would need to be replaced. Vehicle has approximately 130,000 miles, however was running perfectly prior to this incident.
I have a 2013 Hyundai sonata in which the engine was recalled close to about 2 years ago. About 3 days ago my engine just randomly gave out on the highway in rush hour traffic the middle of me driving. And now I am without a vehicle and my car is sitting at lake Norman Hyundai dealership.
The malfunction component was the engine. My safety and other was very risky and dangerous. Unknown if the problem was reproduced or confirmed by dealer. The vehicle was inspected by police. The only warning lamp was the engine lamp that appeared approximately 30 minutes before the engine caught fire resulting in total car loss.
My headlights and break lights are constantly going out. My back taillights light connected is constantly burned up which is a huge safety concern because I can’t see. My car has multiple recalls for engine problems which fit my car problems such as premature bearing wear but it won’t be covered because my vin number isn’t associated with that recall
Car was purchased on [XXX] for our daughter for a little over $6500.00 for a 2013 Hyundai Sonata Limited addition. On around July the 2nd the car started running weirdly and by [XXX] it had stopped running all together and the men from work had to help her push it onto her jobsite, which she wasn't far from. I had the car towed from her job to a mechanic who stated the engine was frozen. I immediately started googling the year make and model to see how much a used engine would cost. That's when a page came up stating there was a recall on that make and model. I was relieved because we do not have money and this was a necessity for our daughter who is [XXX] to get to work. I spoke with the dealership on approximately the 4th or 5th of July and scheduled an appt...
I bought this car brand new and I’m the only driver. I have my oil changed every 3,000 to 4,000 miles. Boiling Springs Tire is the place I get it changed but I have had it changed a few times at Hyundai in Spartanburg. About a year or so ago my oil light came on and I was shocked because it hadn’t been long since I had oil changed. I checked it and it was almost out. I put oil in it and thought maybe boiling springs tire did not put enough in it. Next time i took to Hyundai but kept eye on it. To make a long story short I am having to keep an eye on my oil and adding more about every 200 miles. I know it’s 10 years old but I’ve had cars older than this and did not have to add oil. Other cars...
Dear NHTSA: I recently bought a HYUNDAI SONATA 2013 I got the NC vehicle inspection PASSED the same day. The car has been working perfectly. But, my granddaughter, XXXX, who I share the car with got a terrible experience last Thursday [XXX], she was driving to her job around 2:30 PM when suddenly the car just died, without any light showing on the screen. She was in panic in the middle of a big road with all the cars passing by. She used beach chairs so the others could know the car was dead. A police officer stopped and helped her move the car out of the road so a towing can pick up the car. This was not only a missed day at job for her, it could have ended in a terrible accident. Here are some pictures of the awful day. The car was towed to a mechanic...
While accelerating on the highway, several warning lamps (battery, engine, others that I forget) came on. When I pulled over the hood was smoking, and a fire flared up after I opened the hood. My son and I escaped the car with no injury. Still waiting for report from insurance company.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while exiting a drive-in car wash, the check engine warning light started flashing. The contact immediately observed a knocking noise emanating from the engine compartment. The contact stated that the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle lost motive power, and failed to accelerate as intended. The vehicle was taken to a dealer and oil was added to the engine. The contact was advised to drive the vehicle for 1,000 miles and then return to have the vehicle inspected. The contact returned after driving 1,000 miles and the engine oil level was extremely low. The mechanic diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 143,000.
The car was running well when suddenly loss power and stall. Have it check with a Scanner it read code P1326 (Knock Sensor) which has been recalled on other Sonatas, and Hyundai Models for the same Problem/Issue. This code (P1326) have Made Hyundai to REPLACE the engine in many cars (Recalls). My year made Hyundai Sonata it was not included on the Recalls. Now, I have a car with Loss Power and Stalls to move with No safety because of the 2013 was not included in the Recalls which has the same Issue as those Recalled.
On 04/19/24 I was driving my car like I normally do. There was no indication of a problem whatsoever. No lights were on, no malfunctioning, no nothing. Suddenly an alarm sounded while I was travelling about 60 mph in normal, dry weather conditions. The digital dashboard said "Hybrid System Warning! Safely Stop and Do Not Drive" and suddenly every single light on the dashboard lit in sync with each other. I pulled my car over on the side of the road and thought maybe I could reboot it. Nothing worked so I had to have the car towed to my house because the service center was closed. I performed research to learn that my car was on the recall list and needed to be serviced. I spoke to the dealership on 04/20/24 and told them it was a recall and needed service. A man asked me to have it towed...
The contact owned a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact recevied notifiaciton of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V312000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The contact stated that while driving at approximately 20 MPH, the vehicle lost power and would not accelerate as intended. The contact stated that the ESP, Low tire pressure, Check Oil, Check Engine, and other unknown warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was stopped on the side of the road where white smoke and flames emanated from the engine compartment. The fire department extinguished the fire. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was towed lot where it was deemed totaled. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 176,966.
When driving, an acceleration would sometime cause the car's RPMs would drop to zero with the throttle of the vehicle responding poorly. A lose of power occurs and the takes about 15 seconds to feel some power return to the throttle. The feeling of no throttle occurs which is very scary when your reason for accelerating is to pass a vehicle but the sudden lose of power makes it difficult to accelerate properly to pass. The RPMs remains none responsive. With the loss of power, the traction control light came on. When the vehicle is turn off and turned back on, the car's issue disappears. But the problem randomly occurs again.
2013 Hyundai Sonata with known engine failure issue. While driving, vehicle experienced complete engine failure during operation in confined express lane of highway. Vehicle was rendered inoperable and required towing to dealer for repair. Delear declared "complete engine failure" and offered to apply for repair assistance through Hyundai engine failure recall assistance, but then repair was declined by Hyundai Motor Co. Same vehicle was in Hyundai service for service/repair 04-23, with check engine light. Hyundai, knowledgeable of engine failure recall, only advised me of a possible fix via high pressure fuel error (another known issue) at cost of $1200.00, with a note to "start here." One year later complete engine failure without any prior warning, light, change in engine performance, etc. Obviously caused by known issues.
The engine failed. This created a risk for me and my family as it could have seized on us while driving and caused an accident. The problem was confirmed by the dealer in conjunction with the manufacturer. There were no warning lamps or messages on the dashboard. The only indicator of the issue was burning oil smell and engine shaking while driving. Additional details: The engine started burning a lot of oil close to the 10 year ownership mark around July 2023. We started putting oil into the engine about weekly, then daily around August and September. I finally took it into the dealership in October and they started an oil consumption study. From October 2023 through now in April 2024: 1. They changed the oil and we drove 1000 miles, then went back. 2. They changed the oil again and we drove 1000 miles again. 3. The third time,...
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was able to be restarted after the third attempt; however, the failure recurred while driving. The contact stated that the dealer had previously repaired the vehicle for an engine failure under warranty; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 108,000.
When driving to work the car stopped running in the middle of the highway. We had to pull off to the side of the road, turned off the car and when turning it back on the engine wouldn’t start. The EPS, low oil, check engine, battery, and low tire pressure lights were all on. I took the car to my mechanic and he said the engine seized due to the crankshaft breaking.
My car began consuming alarming amounts of oil as well as emitting a knocking sound and hesitating while been driven. I went to Patriot in Boyertown, PA and they advised me to contact Hyundai as my engine was failing, could cease at any minute and exhibited all of the signs associated with their engine recall/rotor warranty extension. I have had two diagnostics done to the car that found metal as well as three other major signs associated with their engine recall and warranty extension. Hyundai has now asked me to pay $529 out of pocket for additional diagnostics they are requesting as part of their recall and warranty despite the fact that I have already had diagnostics done telling me what is wrong with my engine and additional diagnostics provides no benefit to me. When researching the issue, it is alarming the thousands of other accounts detailing the lack of...
We were part of the Hyundai Theta claim group. Our car did stop in traffic, luckily my husband was alone, and no one was hurt. It was towed to the dealer. This was October2023. Dealer gave a list of fixes & stated it had nothing to do with theta. We had all recommended maintenance done; as we always do. Roughly 2 months later, Dec., with a full car, it did it again, at a stoplight. We are lucky to be alive. We had it towed to our mechanic. I contacted the Theta claims line. Our mechanic stated oil was still in the filter, but the pistons had blown clear through the engine, which he still has. Hyundai contacted him. He sent pictures. Hyundai denied my claim for timely filing. I have called weekly, followed every instruction. Now they want me to mail a letter. I am a disabled veteran. Look...
Car smells like it’s burning, been told it’s oil. Dealership after seeing leakage on the engine replaced the valve gasket. Car still smells like it’s burning and apparently there is no leaking. I went to the same dealership to inform them and they recommended replacing a hose but not a guarantee it will fix the overall problem which is smelling of burning. I’m concerned! I’m 37weeks pregnant and don’t want to inhale burning or any other chemicals pre and post postpartum with a newborn
The engine seized up while my wife was driving on the freeway forcing her to pull over. There is a settlement about these engines indicating that they consume too much oil and Hyundai offered a lifetime warranty for them which we were denied because a previous owner didn’t take care of the oil changes it appears. I have fought with Hyundai to replace this engine simply due to the fact it’s a bad engine and countless millions of customers know this. I was advised that some customers have reached out to you to inspect and sometimes this forces Hyundai to do something. If we didn’t qualify for this replacement we shouldn’t have received a brochure and we shouldn’t be in trouble for somebody else’s actions. The vehicle shouldn’t have been sold to us in the first place.
We purchased this vehicle used in good condition. We have kept up the maintenance especially oil changes and all recalls. The car uses or burns shall I say a lot of oil between oil changes. It is showing no signs of leaks anywhere and I have had to add at least four quarts of oil so far and it isn't even time to change it yet. The check engine light came on. So, I am about to take it to the shop before it stops on me like I have read in the many complaints here.
I was driving down the NYS Thruway in mid December and the check engine light started flashing. Before I could reach the next exit (maybe 3 minutes at most) the engine stopped accelerating and I had to make a choice to pull over on the side of the highway before I lost speed altogether. We had it towed back to our mechanic and it was a complete engine failure, without warning.
The vehicle started making a very loud noise and shaking
While driving the car at freeway speeds it died and quit running, and the engine compartment began smoking, and a fire ensued under the hood. Gasoline could be smelled before it started fire.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 80 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power with the accelerator pedal being depressed. The contact stated that the vehicle decelerated to 30 MPH. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a greasy taillight bulb, and then later diagnosed with starter failure. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted. Additionally, the contact stated that four years earlier the engine was replaced due to metal shavings being found in the engine. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 79,000.
My 2013 Hyundai Sonata 2 recalls that Hyundai are refusing to fix. My engine has been consuming oil since 10/15/2023. 2-3 quartz oil has to be put in the car every 5 days. Some of the recalls were satisfied on 11/15/2023. I took my car South Shore Hyundai located at 360 Sunrise Hwy, Valley Stream, NY 11581 on 1/4/2024 They are refusing to replace the engine . my car was under warranty at the time of the recall. However, I never received a letter to notify me of the recall. Everything the recall states my engine has been doing. I reached out to the corporate office with no resolution. Hyundai says I have to be the original owner which is absurd. After careful research I see where they have replaced vehicles similar to this nature free of charge after consumers hired a lawyer, which I can't afford at the moment....
Hyundai recall 23V651000 has no remedy after 4 months of the start of the recall.
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while his grandson was driving at approximately 35–45, there was smoke entering the vehicle through the vents. The driver was able to pull over, and upon exiting the vehicle, it caught fire. There were no warning lights illuminated before the failure. The police extinguished the fire, and a report was filed. There were no reported injuries. crash or air bag deployment. The fire department was not contacted. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown. The VIN was not available.
Coolant & engine oil is going somewhere. I have to check everyday to make sure coolant & oil is in. Check engine light started flashing & car jerking back. Diagnostic codes:P1326 & P2096
The engine went into smoke and caught on fire. Resulting in damage to the vehicle ultimately causing to be totaled.
The car's engine has a loud rattling noise, the engine vibrates, the check engine flashes, and it lost much of its power . The characteristics of the Recall 162 which has already passed and was fine at that time.
When headlights are turned on, rear window brakelight stays illuminated but both the right and left rear brake lights do not illuminate when foot brake pedal is depressed.
Engine failure driving on the freeway. Many of the clusters in the dash suddenly lite up, check engine light also multiple warning lights.Suddenly vehicle would not accelerate. Feels like my life as well as my passengers were put at risk. Cars suddenly passing us at freeway speeds. As I pulled to the shoulder of cars were very close to hitting ours. Then when we pulled over we saw smoke coming out of the hood of the car and imediately smelled gas or plastic burning. We got out of vehicle thinking that the car might carch on fire.. The police pushed our car out the freeway to a safe zone. Had the car towed to a shop and confirmed engine failure. As of now the vehicle will not start. We are frightened that there may be a gas leak that might cause an explosion or engine may fail again while driving.
My husband and I were driving down i-65 near Montgomery Alabama on 11/17/2023 when all of the warning lights came on and the vehicle lost power. We immediately swerved into the emergency lane to avoid a major accident on a heavily traveled interstate. We arranged for a tow to a repair shop in Montgomery where they diagnosed the problem as an engine seize up. The engine has to be replaced, and the estimated cost was $7,074.81. I did an internet search and discovered others had had the same problem with other Sonatas. My husband contacted the dealership where we bought the car and asked if there was any special program for this type of failure. The service manager was polite, professional and diligent. She looked up the VIN number and confirmed that our vehicle had had all the required maintenance. She said there seemed to be an extended warranty program,...
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at various speed, the vehicle sputtered and then became inoperable. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while the vehicle was stopped, the engine stalled with several unknown warning lights illuminated. Upon restarting the vehicle, the check engine warning light illuminated. Due to the failure, the vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact called an independent mechanic to the residence. The mechanic arrived and informed the contact that the engine had failed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000.
My vehicle has an engine safety recall and Hyundai is refusing to fix it. They are giving every excuse in order he book not to repair it. It is a dangerous safety issue. Thank you

The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 35-40 MPH, the vehicle made an abnormal grinding and rattling sound and failed to respond while depressing the accelerator pedal. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving and the sound had become louder. The dealer was notified of the failure and an appointment was scheduled for a diagnostic test. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V226000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 125,000.
When activating gas pedal, there is a rattling and grinding when in motion and then it subsides. When stopped at light or intersection, when giving gas again, the rattling and grinding resumes. Car seemed to be running a little louder than it's ever been since purchasing a few years ago. At no time has there been any dashboard lights or warnings prompting any problems with engine, low oil or anything else which is what the dealer service center is now telling me is an issue with engine needing to be replaced. Current issues have not been occuring very long which causes me to give the service center a call for an appointment in the first place. Vehicle was dropped off a week ago today, Friday, 9/22/2023, waiting for parts. Currently no work has been done to my vehicle and is sitting on the service center's lot. Was told it will...

This vehicle consumes/burns oil at an alarming rate (1-2 quarts each month). I have taken it to both an independent mechanic and Hyundai, and nothing has been found to be failed. However, this is common enough with Sonatas that I was told that this is "common with Sonatas". This has been going on for well over a year. My concern is if/when the engine locks up while driving.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The Car continues to have inconsistent acceleration, hesitation, and sometimes lurches forward. On two occasions, the car felt like it was just going to turn off while driving. I was driving about 75 mph on I295 and driving about 15 mph on a residential road during the second occurrence. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I feel as though I am not in complete control of the acceleration but am mostly concerned with the car stopping on it's own. I am very scared I'm going to be hit by the car(s) behind me. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? I have an appointment in October...
My 2013 Hyundai Sonata lost acceleration power while on the road requiring an emergency departure from the road and it fails to acceleration beyond. Placed vehicle in park and attempted to proceed home but was only able to drive 5 to 10 mph max creating a dangerous situation for my fellow commuters and myselt. After about a few block I let the vehicle cool down and attempted to proceed home. The car would only go up to 5 mph requiring me to avoid rear end collisions. Ultimately, requiring a tow vehicle to bring it home. Our neighbor indicated it is the MAP sensor which was changes with no improvement to the car's acceleration issues. Checked all the fluids and assured they were correct. This vehicle has place me and others in a dangerous and potentially fatal situations.
My engine seized while driving down a mountain and I had no acceleration at the bottom of the mountain. If I would have been in front of an 18 wheeler while experiencing this failure there is a good chance I would have been in a wreck. Luckily I was not in traffic and was able to find a place to pull over at. There is no where to pull over safely on said mountain unless you’re an 18 wheeler. There is a recall on my engine by Hyundai corporate but there are no dealerships servicing the recall anywhere I can find. The vehicle has not been inspected yet because they are trying to charge me $150 for the inspection that the Hyundai website says is free for the recall. There was no warning to this happening, there was no engine light, oil light, or anything that came on before the...
The contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle in front of her stopped abruptly, prompting her to slam on the brakes. The contacts vehicle was rear-ended by another vehicle, which caused her to crashed into the vehicle in front of her.The air bags failed to deploy. The contact stated that the crash caused her to hit her head. The contact was transported to the hospital by emergency services. The contact did not recall whether she had sustained a head injury. A police report was filed. The dealer was notified of the failure. Additionally, the contact stated upon taking the vehicle to a local Pep Boys for oil change, she was informed that the oil gasket was leaking. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the oil gasket was replaced, and the oil change was completed. The contact...
Vehicle died while on a city street, it could not be restarted. It was in the middle of the street with oncoming traffic on both sides. The vehicle would not start for Firestone or the Hyundai dealership. After signing over the car to the dealership on 6/30/23, it was inspected by the service department over a month and a half later (8/9/23). They now say it was part of a safety recall and Hyundai approved it for a new engine. When the vehicle died, there was no warning signs, messages, smoke, sounds, or any other symptoms prior to failure.
