2011 HYUNDAI SONATA. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO BEING UNAWARE OF ENGINE RECALL AND REQUESTS REIMBURSEMENT FROM COMPANY. *AS *TR
A MOTOR OIL BURNING SMELL FILLS THE INTERIOR CABIN OF CAR. OVER YEARS DEALERS SAY NO LEAKS TOP OR BOTTOM BUT BURNING MORE THEN A QUART OF OIL BETWEEN 3,000 OIL CHANGES. IT'S A BURNING FUMES SMELL LIKE SOMETHING IS BURNING ABNORMALLY IN THE ENGINE. IF IT'S NOT LEAKING OIL THEN ITS AN ENGINE INTERNAL ISSUE POSSIBLY PRONE TO FIRE STARTING. I FIND THE DEALERSHIPS REFUSE TO KNOWLEDGE THE 2011 SONATA 2.4 THETA ENGINES ARE RATED FOR FAILURE EXTREMELY POORLY.THESE ENGINES ARE KNOWN TO SEIZE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS.
WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY THE VEHICLE STALLED AND STOPPED. ENGINE LIGHTS WENT ON. THE CAR STARTED AFTER 15 MINUTES
SAT EVENING DRIVING THRU DOWNTOWN DALLAS CAR SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING LOST POWER AND REFUSED TO START AGAIN. LUCKILY ABLE TO COAST TO EXIT RAMP. TOW BILL OF $300 TO GET OFF ROADWAY. MONDAY MORNING ANOTHER $110 TO TOW TO MECHANIC. MECHANIC SAYS ENGINE IS GONE, BUT CAN'T EXPLAIN WHY. IT SIMPLY SEIZED UP. NEW ENGINE REQUIRED.
CAR STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY WHILE 120 MILES FROM HOME. ENGINE, OIL, BATTERY AND EPS LIGHTS ALL CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME AND CAR SLOWED DOWN UNTIL IT STOPPED. I WAS BARELY ABLE TO MOVE IT FROM THE MIDDLE LANE TO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE FREEWAY. MY CAR WAS STILL OVER THE WHITE LINE AND IT COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN HIT BY ONCOMING TRAFFIC. CAR WAS SMOKING FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE. TOWED TO NEARBY MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT CAR HAD NO OIL. I JUST RECEIVED AN OIL CHANGE LESS THAN TWO WEEKS PRIOR AND HAD 2500 MILES LEFT BEFORE I NEEDED ANOTHER ONE. MECHANIC STATED THAT I NEED A NEW ENGINE. I JUST PURCHASED THIS CAR IN FEB 2018. WARRANTY IS FIGHTING ME ON FIXING IT SO NOW I HAVE PAYMENTS ON A CAR THAT DOESNT WORK AND ITS STILL 120 MILES AWAY. I HAD...
INTERNAL ENGINE NOISE AND UNUSUAL AMOUNT OF OIL CONSUMPTION , APPROXIMATELY 1 QT. PER 500 MILES . FOUND USA TODAY DATED 09/25/2015 STATING POSTED BY THE NHTSA THAT HYUNDAI ANNOUNCED A RECALL OF MY VEHICLE FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM BUT LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER STATED THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED BY THIS SAFETY RECALL.
ENGINE STALLS AT HIGH SPEEDS AND SLOW DOWN DRAMATICALLY. HAVE TAKEN TO HYUDAI TWICE, THEY SAY THE ENGINE RECALL HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH STALLING ONLY KNOCKING AND THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME $104 DIAGNOSTIC CHARGE WHEN CLEARLY ALL THE NEWSPAPER SAY THAT IT POSSIBLY HAS DEBRIS WHICH CAN CLOG FUEL LINES AND CAUSE STALLING, THEY SAID THIS IN NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY OR RECALL. IT HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES IN THE PAST THREE YEARS, BUT THEY WON'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. LAST TIME IS LISTED BELOW
CAR JUST WON'T START AT ALL IT HAS OIL AND STUFF IN IT AND IT WON'T START IT'S A PUSH START I GOT IT FROM CAR MAX ABOUT 5 MONTHS AGO.
THE THERMOSTAT HOUSING IS PLASTIC MOLDED OVER A STEEL (METAL) CORE. WHERE THE HOUSING IS BOLTED TO THE ENGINE OVER THE INPUT AND OUTPUT COOLANT ORIFICES AN INTERNAL PIECE OF PLASTIC FLAKED OFF THE STEEL CORE BEHIND THE GASKET SURROUNDING THE INPUT ORIFICE. AT REST NO COOLANT LEAKED OUT OF THE COOLING SYSTEM. HOWEVER, AT OPERATING TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE, THE COOLANT SPRAYED OUT OF THE ENGINE IN A FINE MIST/SPRAY. ALTHOUGH THERE WAS AN ODOR OF COOLANT WHILE DRIVING, ALL SEARCHES AROUND THE HEATER CORE, UNDER VEHICLE RESULTED IN NO EVIDENCE OF COOLANT LEAK. ON AN EXTENDED TRIP AT 103,000 MILES ENOUGH COOLANT EVACUATED THE COOLING SYSTEM TO FACILITATE A BLOWN HEAD GASKET. YET THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS INDICATING OVERHEATING. THE BLOWN GASKET WAS DISCOVERED WHEN THERE WAS A SOUND OF GURGLING LIQUIDS ORIGINATING FROM THE COOLANT RESERVOIR WHEN WE REACHED OUR DESTINATION, A THICK SLUDGE OF COOLANT AND...

ENGINE WAS RECALLED IN 2015, THE WARRANTY FOR THE ENGINE RECALLED WAS EXTENDED TO 10 YEARS 120,000 MILE WARRANTY. I JUST RECENTLY BOUGHT A 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA TURBO 2.0 WITH 146,000 MILES. AFTER LESS THAN A MONTH OF MY SON DRIVING IT THE ENGINE BEGAN STALLING OUT AND SMELLED OF SMOKE. I CONTACTED HYUNDAI TO SEE IF THEY WOULD PERFORM THE INSPECTION AND DO THE REPAIR WORK THEY STATED THEY WOULD NOT SINCE THE CAR EXCEEDED HAD EXCEEDED THE MILEAGE WARRANTY. I AM CURRENTLY HAVING A NEW ENGINE INSTALLED, AND WOULD LIKE THE NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE AND SEE IF I CAN GET A REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT COST

TAKATA RECALL MY 2011 HYUNDAI SONATA LIMITED HAS BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE NOT TURNING COMPLETELY. MY CAR IS A PUSH TO START, SO WHEN HOLDING THE BRAKE AND PUSHING THE START BUTTON THE CAR STILL HESITATES TO COME ON BUT THE LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD DO SO I KNOW IT'S NOT A BATTERY ISSUE. THIS HAS HAPPENED A COUPLE YEARS AGO AND I WAS STRANDED IN MY CAR AT WORK, AFTER SEVERAL TRIES IT EVENTUALLY SWITCHES OVER AND COMES ON. I'VE READ SEVERAL COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER HYUNDAI SONATA OWNERS HAVING THE SAME EXACT ISSUE, I'M HOPING HYUNDAI TAKES ACTION IN RESOLVING THIS MALFUNCTION.
ENGINE SEIZED UP WHILE DRIVING AGAIN. THE ENGINE WAS REPLACED 2 YEARS AGO WITH THE HYUNDAI ENGINE RECALL CAMPAIGN. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN MAINTAINED BUT HYUNDAI WILL NOT COVER THE ENGINE EVEN THOUGH IT IS UNDER WARRANTY. I WAS DRIVING DOWN 35 IN DALLAS WITH MY 6 YEAR OLD SON AND THE ENGINE SEIZED UP AND I COULD NOT CONTROL THE VEHICLE.

I WAS DRIVING TO WORK, STOP AT THE STOP SIGN, AS I TRAVELED 30 FEET THROUGH THE INTERSECTION MY CAR DIED ON ME. THE CAR WOULDN'T CRANK, NO SOUND, NOTHING. I POP THE HOOD AND NOTICE THERE IS SMOKE COMING FORM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, I CHECK ALL MY FLUIDS AND THERE WAS NO ENGINE OIL PRESENT IN THE ENGINE. NO LOW OIL INDICATOR CAME ON. I JUST HAD A 60,000 MILES MAINTENANCE TO INCLUDED AN OIL CHANGE AS WELL. THE VEHICLE AS TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC SHOP TO HAVE THEM DIAGNOSE IT.
I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY GOING 55 MPH AND MY ACCELERATION STARTED TO DECREASE AND I COULD NOT PICK UP SPEED,AS I EXITED OFF THE HIGHWAY I HEARD A KNOCKING NOISE AND MY CAR DIED. I HAD TO CALL MY INSURANCE COMPANY FOR A TOW TO THE DEALERSHIP NAPLETON HYUNDAI, 649 DUNN RD, HAZELWOOD, MO 63042.
MY CAR HAS BEEN BLOWING OUT WHITE SMOKE OUT OF THE EXHAUST. I SEEN THERE HAS BEEN ALOT OF RECALL ISSUES ON THE HYUNDAI. I GOT A LETTER INFORMING THE RECALL OF THE AIR BAGS. I BOUGHT THIS CAR IN SEPTEMBER 2017. I DONT KNOW IF THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD THE ISSUE FIXED ON THE RECALLS ABOUT THE ENGINE, BRAKES, AND SEAT BELTS.
AIR BAG LIGHT ON SO AIR BAGS WONT DEPLOY. ENGINE LOCK UP
WHILE DRIVING ON A CITY STREET, THE CAR BEGAN TO STALL WITH NO PULLING POWER, FOLLOWED BY A KNOCKING NOISE, THEN IT JUST CUT OFF IN MOVING TRAFFIC. TRIED TO RESTART IT, NO LUCK. THERE WAS A SMELL OF BURNING METAL. PUT ON HAZARD SIGNAL. HAD TO BE PUSHED OUT OF TRAFFIC BY ANOTHER DRIVER. CHECKED FLUIDS AND THERE WAS NO OIL FLOW. (WASN'T DUE FOR OIL CHANGE) DIP STICK WAS DRY. THERE WASN'T A INDICATOR LIGHT DISPLAYED ON DASHBOARD FOR LOW OIL. HAD CAR TOWED TO DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSTIC TEST.( TEST WILL BE DONE ON7/17/18) EARLIEST APPOINTMENT.
DRIVING CAR AND LOST ALL POWER DIAGNOSIS SHOWED NOTHING BY MY MECHANIC AFTER HYUNDAI TOLD ME CAR VIN NOT ON RECALL DURING ON VACATION ENGINE DIED HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED BACK TO MY FROM MARYLAND WAS GARAGE SAID ENGINE BEARING BROKE WILL COST ME 7000 TO MY MECHANIC
MOTOR LOCKED UP BECAUSE NO OIL. I HAD OIL CHANGED 2 MONTHS BEFORE AND NO LEAKS ON CARPORT AND OIL LIGHT NEVER CAME ON. SO, I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND IT WENT DEAD AT A RED LIGHT. COULD NOT GET IT TO START BACK UP. HAD TO HAVE IT PUSHED TO AN EMPTY LOT. HAD IT TOWED AND THEY SAID IT HAD NO OIL IN IT THEREFORE IT LOCKED MOTOR UP. WE ARE VERY UPSET BECAUSE THE CAR IS PAID FOR AND WE HAD NO IDEA THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE OIL.

TWO QUARTS OF OIL WERE ADDED AND THE DEALER ALSO WANTED TO CONDUCT AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST ON THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND CASE NUMBER: 11415617 WAS OPENED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 144,650.

TAKATA RECALL: I GOT AN OIL CHANGE ON MAY 25TH AND ON JUNE 24TH (4 WEEKS LATER 1800 MILES) THE CAR COMPLETELY RAN OUT OF OIL AND SEIZED THE ENGINE. NO OIL LIGHT INDICATOR CAME ON AND THERE WERE NO LEAKS. NOW THIS IS A $3000 FIX FOR A ENGINE REPLACEMENT.

CAR WAS IN MOTION HEADING STRAIGHT ON A BUSY INTERSTATE. I HAD BEEN DRIVING FOR APPROXIMATELY 45 MINUTES WHEN IT COMPLETELY DIED CAUSING THE CAR TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A DARK INTERSTATE. ALL OF THE DASH LIGHTS CAME ON RIGHT WHEN THE CAR STARTED TO DIE. THERE WAS NO SHOULDER ON THIS PART OF THE INTERSTATE AND IT WOULD NOT MAKE IT TO THE NEXT EXIT. WHEN THE CAR CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP ALL THE LIGHTS WERE THEN OFF AND I COULD NOT EVEN TURN ON THE HAZARD LIGHTS, NOTHING AT ALL WAS WORKING. I TRIED TO RESTART IT A COUPLE OF TIMES UNTIL I SAW SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD THEN I STOPPED BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO CATCH ON FIRE. I ENDED UP GETTING IT TOWED OFF THE INTERSTATE TO MY HOUSE. THE 2011 SONATA HAS KNOWN...

THE DEALER (INTERSTATE HYUNDAI, 609 CONSTITUTION DR., WEST MONROE, LA 71292, (318) 387-2667) WAS CONTACTED BECAUSE THE FAILURE PREVENTED THE VEHICLE FROM STARTING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND INDICATED THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
WE WERE DRIVING AND THE CAR ENGINE JUST STOPPED IN MOTION IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CITY STREET. EVERYTHING LOCKED AND WOULD NOT START - LOOKED INSIDE AND THE OIL WAS BLACK (I JUST GOT AN OIL CHANGE, LESS THAN A MONTH AGO). I SPOKE TO A MECHANIC AND THEY SAID THIS SPECIFIC MODEL HAS MANY ISSUES, SPECIFICALLY EXCESSIVE OIL BURNING. I HAD MY CAR TOWED AND NEED TO GET IT RUNNING ASAP. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT I NEED TO DO. I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AND MY CAR WAS EXCEEDING VERY SLOWLY AND WHEN I REACHED ABOUT 60 IT CUT OFF ON THE INTERSTATE I PULLED OVER TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG PUT THE CAR IN PARKED AND IT STARTED SMOKING. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE COLLISION OCCURRED AS THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE WAS COASTING TO THE SIDE OF THE ROADWAY; HOWEVER, THE OTHER VEHICLE KEPT DRIVING. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT ALL THE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WHEN THE VEHICLE STALLED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. I AM APPALLED AT THE CONDITIONS I'VE HAD TO ENDURE WITH MY SONATA. I'VE NEVER SEEN OR OWNED A MORE UNSAFE VEHICLE. MY STEERING COLUMN BROKE, THE ENGINE WAS REPLACED TWICE, I'VE DEALT WITH ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS, NOW IT'S INVOLVED IN THE AIRBAG FAILURE RECALL AND I'VE NEEDED TO TAKE MY CAR IN DUE TO THE 13 RECALLS. MY SONATA IS ONE OF THE FIRST MADE. IT'S FROM THE ALABAMA PLANT. I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR WHY THE NHTSA HAS NOT MADE HYUNDAI BUY THESE VEHICLES BACK? TAKATA RECALL MY CAUGHT FIRE 4/20/2018, THE SMELL CAME FROM NEAR THE PASSENGER LOWER FOOT AREA, IT WAS A RUBBERY BURNING SMELL THAT QUICKLY BECAME WHITE SMOKE EMITTING FROM THE AREA. THE CAR BEGAN RUNNING VERY ROUGHLY ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO, I DID AN OIL CHANGE. A MONTH LATER THE CAR WAS OVER 2 QUARTS LOW ON OIL, WHERE THE OIL WENT I HAVE NO IDEA. THE CAR HAS BEEN IN THE DEALERSHIP OVER AND OVER AND OVER FOR VARIOUS ELECTRICAL, MECHANICAL AND ENGINE ISSUES. I HAVE ALL DOCUMENTATION AND FEEL THE CAR IS A SAFETY HAZARD. WHY IS HYUNDAI PERFORMING THE INSPECTIONS ON THESE CARS WHEN CLEARLY THEY ARE THE ONES RESPONSIBLE. THE INPSECTIONS SHOULD BE DONE BY INDEPENDENT MECHANICS THAT WILL BE NON BIASED. TAKATA RECALL I HAVE GONE THROUGH THE RINGER WITH THIS VEHICLE I PURCHASED THE ENGINE STOPPED ON ME WHILE I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE. I GOT A CALL NEXT DAY ASKING ME TO COME AND PICK UP MY CAR, WHICH I WAS VERY SKEPTICAL ABOUT. THEY ASKED ME TO SIGN A PAPER INDICATING THAT EVERYTHING IS DONE. I ASKED IF I CAN SPEAK TO SOMEONE TO EXPLAIN WHY THIS HAPPENED SO QUICKLY AND IF THERE'S ANYTHING TO WORRY ABOUT AND THEY COULDN'T CONNECT ME WITH ANYONE NEITHER DID THEY ASK FOR MY INFORMATION TO CONTACT ME WHEN THAT EXPERT IS AVAILABLE. NOW ABOUT A MONTH SINCE TAKING THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, I CHECK MY VIN ONLINE AND TO MY SURPRISE 4 OF THE MOST CRITICAL OPEN RECALLS ARE STILL NOT CLOSED OR REMEDIED.
