2017 HONDA CR-V Engine Problems

In late December (2025) we noticed that our Honda CR-V was starting up rough each day. One day, we found that all of the warnings were being cycled through on the dashboard (TPMS, Check Engine, ABS, etc.) We took it into a local mechanic on December 29th, but when we dropped it off, the problem was not presenting. They performed routine maintenance (~105,000 miles), and did not notice any obvious problems with the engine. They told us to bring it back if the problem returned. We noticed the engine problem getting worse over time, and on February 7th, the warning lights came on again and did not go off. We took the car to the mechanic on February 11th where it was diagnosed as a head gasket failure. On February 14th we took it to a Honda Service Center for a second opinion where they confirmed the head gasket failure....

There's an issue with the fuel injectors on the 2017 1.5 Turbo engine on the CRV. There was a service bulletin issued in 2019 about this and basically not much done by Honda on this concern which is a major repair costing around 2400 dollars. The issue caused all lights on the dashboard to light up. The vehicle runs rough and times you smell gas also.

Car has been having all of the dashboard lights come on. I search up this and there are so many same gen Honda CRV 2017-19 having the same issue happen repeatedly. I have came across atleast 50+ people online that keep having this issue come back. Also at times it will says engine is too hot and to park safely. This is 3rd time where my car is in idle and the car shuts off and says engine is too hot to which I then turn it off. When I proceed to try to start car after waiting it does not stay on. I went to 2 different Hondas and they stated battery, alternator, starter are good. This car is no good if everyone is having the same issues.

A 2017 CR-V entering limp mode and showing all dashboard alerts. I brought it up to Honda America and open case #15734548 to complained about fuel injector recall. After reading the codes at local Honda dealership Chandler,Arizona and repaired cylinder misfire issues. Two days later again started showing all warning lights. I request local Honda dealer to diagnosis further. After discussion with dealer and started reading countless posts regarding bad fuel injectors on different models. I too see Honda recalls for fuel injectors and my VIN is not in recall list. Its well maintained and only 73k miles on this 2017 CRV. They wouldn’t normal maintenance issue and its a design or manufacturing flaw. I am requesting that Honda cover the full cost of the necessary repairs and more move its several safety recalls due to bad fuel injector design or so. Should be included in recalls.

Monday (11/17/2025) after work: car vibrated <10 seconds then stopped when turning on car. Tuesday (11/18/2025): ALL warning lights came on. Schedule appt at Honda for Saturday when they could see us. Wednesday (11/19/2025) was driving to AutoZone to have battery checked (>3 years ago all lights went on and it was the battery) when car went from 70mph on highway to not exceeding 20mph with my family in the car during rush hour. I had to stay on the road as there was no shoulder resulting in a near mass car accident as everyone slammed brakes to avoid me. Went <20mph to closest car shop (right off the exit). Car shop without looking said most likely the head gasket which is a known Honda CRV 2017 issue. Unknown: all light on dash come on. Maybe an electrical or engine problem. All safety features on car disable. Honda dealer said it’s an emission problem. Battery has been changed and problem still continues. Started at about 70,000 miles. Comes on and goes away on its own. Happened about 7 times now

P0301 code Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected.

In December 2024 we brought our 2017 Honda CRV for rattling and shaking when accelerating. In all cases below, the dashboard flashed engine warnings and fuel system warnings. The Honda Dealership mechanics shop replaced fuel injectors, spark plugs, and adjusted valves. Importantly, they also performed a full coolant service. Services totaled 2,952.92. In October 2025 we brought the 2017 Honda CRV to another Honda Dealership for the same issue. They performed a fuel system service and replaced the blower motor and, importantly, a coolant service. Services totaled 1,070.91. On November 7th the car completely failed and was towed to the first Honda Dealership who diagnosed a failed damaged head gasket. Repair will cost 6500.00 dollars. Upon research we have found that the 2017 Honda CRV Turbo has what appear to be a known problem with coolant leaking in the cylinders causing shaking and rattling when accelerating and leading to damage...

My turbo had a nut come loose twice, once after having the turbo completely replaced. This has lead to a head gasket failure.

Back in July, my car started having the lights come on; it lit up the whole dashboard. The brake system, tire pressure, brake hold system, hill start, adaptive cruise control, etc. It affected the power of the vehicle. There was no acceleration at all. It was like it went in limp mode. This has happened numerous times. The other problem is starting it was making a hesitation to start. It would also start rough as in almost like a shake. We noticed that it was using antifreeze more often than it should and would get hot sitting still. That's when we took car to be inspected by a certified mechanic and that's when we found out that we needed a new engine due to antifreeze seeping into the engine.

This complaint is in regards to three engine failures for my vehicle. I purchased the vehicle in October of 2017. In October 2020 this vehicle suffered a malfunction of the fuel injector systems. Warning lights were enabled prior to losing full power of the vehicle at this time and it was brought in for repair. In June 2025, my vehicle began losing power while actively driving resulting in the car and myself being put in potentially dangerous conditions on the road. The car would fail to accelerate and move. The car had to be coasted back to an area of safety. There were no warning lights prior to this happening. We kept Honda CRV EXL 2017 on time repair by the Honda dealership ,never missed one deadline of repair as recommended by the Honda repair shop. Now they are saying that head gasket is blown and engine has jammed. How can head gasket go bad randomly when maintenance was done regularly by the Honda dealer, who is fault it is ? Who should be paying for its repair?

All auxiliary safety system warning lights came on at once, with ABS, TPMS, collision avoidance and adaptive cruise all rendered inoperable. Dealer says faulty fuel injectors are to blame. Numerous times over the life of the car all dash warning systems and lights activate while you are driving. Sometimes they persist after restarting engine. Numerous visits to dealer to address and finally they stated that fuel injectors need replaced. Searching this issue online seems to indicate this is a common event with 2017-18 CRVs like mine. I contacted Honda and they stated that there is no recall or warranty extension for an issue like this. The car is not safe to drive with all the alarms staying active. This started taking place in 2018 with only 30K miles and would happen rarely. But started to happen monthly in 2024 until I replaced the fuel injectors last September.

I have purchased a car from a private seller with an altered odometer (mileage discrepancy and now it has all type of lights showing on the dash and car stops running all of a sudden I have taken to Honda dealer for diagnosis and they told us we been fraud on miles and they messed with it electronically

Engine Head Gasket failure at 68,000 miles (8k miles after warranty). Vehicle enters limp mode at random, including total loss of power on the highway at speeds in excess of 60 miles an hour. This is the message I received from the service representative. Hi this is Will with Honda I checked out your car I heard the noise the noise is your BTC actuator timing chain actuator that you need a timing chain job unfortunately also found a full head gasket need fuel injectors as well give me a call I can go over everything it's expensive though…” This vehicle has been serviced exclusively by the same Honda dealership. There was a slight miss upon starting the vehicle that would go away upon driving, that was the reason for taking it in to be checked. No lights came on signaling a problem, no loss of power, no overheating and although the service representative mentioned a noise there was no noise that we could hear. This vehicle has only 108,000 carefully driven miles on it.

Driving Honda crv 1.5L around 40mph when car went into limp mode check engine started flashing and almost caused a crash from stalling traffic. Took it to Honda dealership and stated that it was a costly blown head gasket. Within further investigating it's common for these 1.5L head gaskets to blow prematurely due to poor design that needs to be recalled.

Coolant and oil draining like crazy. Absurd about if smoke (white/blue) coming out of exhaust. At times the screen for the radio with just decide to not work.

All lights shows up on my cars dashboard and at first start it shake with vibration for 2 minutes then it stables even though on the highway when I try to accelerate it doesn’t go smoothly last time I have the same issue and paragon fixed it by changing alternator and reset by computer but still I am facing the same problem. They are always going through the temporary solution by resetting code sometimes changing battery or recommended some other parts although they never take seriously about my head gasket problem and because of that causes misfire. I need the permanent solution. It’s very frustrating for me to face that problem everyday.

ALL dash lights came on and it showed all safety systems had faults. Took it to the dealership and was told I needed injectors. I have looked into this issue and many CR-V models have had warranty extensions for this exact issue. Lucky me mine is not one of the one's in the VIN group for this extension. Engine was overheating due to a defective head gasket. “The head gasket provides a seal that keeps that pressure contained within the engine’s cylinder. The head gasket also provides a seal for internal engine water and oil passages“ (Honda). I have found hundreds of others with similar defects for the Honda 2017-2018 1.5L engines. I had no warning until the engine was too hot and the car alerted me to pull over to cool the engine. Car is regularly serviced by Honda dealership.

Sudden loss of power. Unable to accelerate. Car towed to Honda dealer who confirmed blown turbo and likely internal engine damage. This was the first year the turbo 4 was installed in the Honda CR-V and this problem has been reported previously. We were led to believe from Consumer Reports that Honda had extended the warranty on cars with this engine, but dealer said no.

Fuel injectors have failed on this car 2x before it has hit 120k miles. First was at 50k ish. Honda will not acknowledge this as an issue, even though it is an extremely common issue with all of the 1.5L engines on civics, accords and their other cars in this engine type. My mechanic has checked the service records and the most common issue with these cars, and this is a super common issue, always requiring fuel injectors to repair it. Car idles very very badly when started, and should not be having all of these issues on a well-maintained 8 year old car. Engine was overheating due to head gasket failure. Engine overheat happened suddenly when driving on highway and had to slow down and stop. Problem has been confirmed by two Honda dealers and one local mechanic with full inspection. Engine overheat massage showed.

I have had my car taken to Honda dealerships with an issue of all my warning lights would come on. No one has been able to fix the issue. The spark plugs, battery, air filters, have been replaced and diagnostic tests were done. The warning lights would stop for a couple of months and then start again. 2017 HONDA CRV had several warning lights came on and dealer indicated it was fuel injection problem. Dealer charged $ 1500 and fixed problem. Again this year same warnings light came on. Dealer is indicating it's due to Timimg chain issue and dealer wants to pull parts from Engibe to see what the problem is and depending on what the problem is fix it. Dealer wants to charge more money depending on what they find and is high cost item. Delaer is not specific.

I replaced fuel injectors in my 2017 honda crv in September 2024 at Northtown Honda in Buffalo, NY. In November 2024 my girlfriend was driving the vehicle in Michigan and the car slowed down to below 20 mph on the highway and flashed all dashboard warning lights, what Honda refers to as "limp mode". This almost caused her get hit by a semi truck. The car was towed to Honda of Grand Blanc and I was told it needs a new turbo. Well maintained vehicle with less than 86,000 miles and all 4 fuel injectors failed, causing check engine light, which caused all assistive device systems to turn off (collision avoidance, abs, traction control, etc.). In researching the issue, these injectors are failing in this make/model frequently at mileages well before you would expect a fuel injector to wear out, suggesting there is a defect in the injectors used in this model year CRV.

The vehicle has a consistent problem where all dashboard warning lights come on at the same time, sometimes when this happens the vehicle enters what they call limp mode and won't go above 10-20 mph. This occurred multiple times to me and recently on the highway where a tractor trailer almost hit my vehicle because of the loss of speed with no brake lights. It has been to multiple honda dealerships where most recently I was told it was fuel injectors. I replaced the fuel injectors and it happened again this time the dealership told me to replace the turbo. Did that and on the way home from the dealership the lights come back on. There should be a class action law suit against honda for this common issue that they don't take seriously. Wait until someone actually is hurt by this problem.

I have repeatedly had to bring my car into the shop (6 times now, only owned it for 5 months) to have the spark plugs and/or fuel injectors replaced multiple times. The car will suddenly start shuddering when trying to accelerate over 2 RPM. It has also stalled twice (while accelerating it slowed down to a stop in the middle of the road) and the engine light will flash. Mechanics have noted misfires in the engine and that the plugs/injector are getting clogged and dirty very quickly. I don't know much about vehicles, but I know I should not have to be replacing the spark plugs and fuel injectors 2-3 times in 5 months of ownership as I've never had to replace them in previous Honda vehicles that were owned for 5+ years.

Earlier this week and again today, my wife and I were using our 2017 Honda CR-V EX when the car behaved very anomalously. In both of these instances, the car started normally and moved out onto the street, but then the engine abruptly bogged down and multiple messages of the form "xxx System Has A Problem" would cycle on the driver's display. At this time, the car would barely move forward or reverse, and shifting into reverse ("R") was accompanied by a noticeable jerk and a thump. The shifter display on the driver's display also appeared to be showing all of the possible shift settings at once. One or two cycles of rebooting the system on the infotainment/backup camera display appeared to clear the engine operation problem, but the error messages persisted for several miles and several restarts before they abruptly disappeared. For about six months my service lights have been lighting up. For the same amount of time I have noticed that my car begins to "stink" after running for a minute or two. I took it into the dealership and the service advisor states that I have three of four fuel injectors that have failed. I asked the service advisor about the warranty and she states those are not under warranty. I have researched this issue and have found that many many people have had problems with their fuel injectors and Honda will not replace them under warranty. I am sending this complaint because I feel that this issue should be covered under a recall warranty, since it has been noted in other models that the fuel injectors were recalled and repaired. Please help.

I was driving my Honda CRV 2017 on I-65 in Birmingham - Montgomery area in Alabama in March 2024 and suddenly in the middle of the busy highway the vehicle stalled and wouldn’t drive even after stepping on the accelerator a little harder.
