My engine makes a loud rattling noise upon start up and then a more discreet rattling while driving because of the cam phaser.
When you try to accelerate quickly, even when you’re switching lanes on the interstate or just driving down the road, the car will sometimes pop out of gear or something and almost comes to a complete stop causing you to almost get rear ended. I’ve almost been hit several times because the car stops and won’t go.
The Cam Phaser failed in 2023 and 2025. It kept the vehicle from starting. The transmission has failed twice in the past two years.
In June 2024, my 2019 Ford Expedition experienced serious transmission and powertrain problems. Diagnostic testing identified catalyst efficiency codes (P0430), and I was given a repair estimate that included catalytic converter replacement. The vehicle also displayed repeated “Service Engine Soon” and “Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power” warnings. Because the vehicle became undrivable and the repair costs were unaffordable, I was forced to release it to auction in June 2024, resulting in a significant financial loss. In April 2025, Ford issued Recall 24E13 acknowledging that PCM programming errors could falsely trigger catalyst efficiency codes (such as P0430), potentially leading to unnecessary catalytic converter replacements, exactly the condition my vehicle experienced. This recall defect directly contributed to the loss I suffered, as I still owed about $11,000 on the vehicle when I could no longer use it. I have already opened a case with Ford (Case #CXH05645573C2W6R6), but I have not received meaningful assistance....
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while starting the vehicle, there was an abnormal clattering and clanking sound coming from the engine. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was a known issue with the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed with engine failure and cam phaser rattle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.
Engine rattle during start up
- cam phaser rattle, yes. TSB-23-2143 -possible engine auto start failure while stopped at stoplight, or failure while driving -yes, dealer diagnosed multiple times -yes, dealer -no
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, there was a rattling sound coming from the engine. The contact pulled over to side of the road, turned off and restarted the vehicle and the vehicle started to operate as intended. The check engine warning light was illuminated. An independent mechanic was contacted. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the cam phaser needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 150,000.
Catalytic converter signaled efficiency is low after the Emissions Recall 24 E 13 had been fixed 2025. There are 5 other expeditions in the dealership with the exact same problem. Had recall fixed one month later check engine light came on. Same problem emissions signal. Ford won’t fix it as they claim “it would have been caught during inspections of the vehicle when they run codes during any kind of service.” Even though it would not have been because the recall just came out May 2025 for it to correctly issue said signal.
My transmission started losing power on acceleration, hard jerk/bang when shifting into gear, transmission slipping, loss of power between shifts
Transmissions CDF Drum is failing annd causing my transmission to go out of gear and slam into first and I just preformed “cam phaser” repairs exceeding $3400. A vehicle this new should not need these repairs. There’s 1000s of complaints online and it’s sick and twisted that Ford is not forced to recall these issues.
There is a known defect in a solenoid where it doesn't allow the transmission to upshift, it gets stuck. The check engine light has come on and the engine starts to struggle.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, there was an abnormal rattling sound coming from the engine compartment. The contact stated that after the engine reached normal operating temperatures, the rattling ceased; however, the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the cam phasers. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to Customer Satisfaction Program: 21N03. My vehicle is having cam phaser issues and ford will not repair the issue. This was identified in customer satisfaction program 21N03 but I did not receive notification of the repair.
Would like to determine why vehicle was not included in recall 21B10 or 21N03 for cam phaser rattle.
Cam chaser still rattles when starting even after recall was fixed. Getting worse with every drive.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that the engine was hard to crank during cold weather. There was an abnormal rattling sound coming from the vehicle. The service engine soon warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the virtual cam timing was not operating as designed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and confirmed that the vehicle was not covered under recall. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 98,034.
While driving lost power, could not drive, exhaust valve failure
Vehicle has a rattle upon starting. Also the vehicle is shifting harshly and slipping. Sometimes the vehicle will occasionally stop accelerating in the middle of the road. The RPMs will rise but the vehicle stops having power. After a minute it finally jerks and the vehicle will go again. I have had the vehicle examined by a technician and have been told that it is the cam phasers, CDF drum/transmission, and torque converter.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that there was a ticking sound coming while starting the vehicle. The contact stated that the ticking sound was consistent. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed; however, the vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to Customer Satisfaction Number: CSP - 21N03 - Supplement 4. The manufacturer was contacted and made aware of the issue and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 80,000.
Catalytic converter has gone bad error code Po430
I was on the freeway going between 65-70mph when I felt a hard shift and lost all acceleration. The truck started to slow down and the wrench light came on. I was able to coast to the shoulder and turn my hazards on while the wrench light and warnings were going. I parked the truck and waited for my husband to help. The truck sat for approximately 20 minutes when it was turned back on. There were no lights on the dash and the wrench warning went away [XXX] husband was able to drive it home. I had my three kids in the truck and it was a terrifying experience. I took it to get scanned and it gave us a throttle body code. My vehicle supposedly isn't affected but this experience tells me that myself and my kids are in more danger than what is being claimed. INFORMATION REDACTED...
My expedition was reprogrammed when I bought it due to the Cam phaser rattle. This did not help. I was told this was normal and would not effect the engine. I had taken it in a second time to be reprogrammed an given the same information. My Ford service says fifth cylinder misfire. The car shakes and idles hard. The spark plug and parts were replaced as suggested with no change. Took it to the shop and was told I now need a new engine due to an internal failure of the engine. I called Ford and they said there is no recall on this year. The Cam phaser reprogram was a customer satisfaction and not a recall. I asked if they would offer assistance since now I need a new engine. They will not. I called about ordering a new engine. Iwas was told there is over 250 people...
On three separate occasions, my vehicle lost the ability to accelerate. The first time I was attempting to pass slow moving farm equipment when my vehicle lost power, had a loud vibrating/rattling noise and multiple dashboard warnings flashed. Luckily, I was able to merge back into my lane and pull off the side of the road. I took the vehicle in for service and was told I needed new phasers. Once I got my vehicle back, I was still experiencing issues. Fortunately, the next two times my vehicle lost power I was driving at low speeds. I did have my kids with me on one occasion and it scared them quite a bit. I am not sure what the loud noise is but they stopped riding with me after that. Thank goodness I was not driving my family on the highway when experiencing a power failure. My vehicle is back...
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that occasionally while her husband drives at various speeds, the vehicle would fail to accelerate as intended when depressing the accelerator pedal. In addition, the contact stated the rear truck door had fallen on her husband's head a few times in the past and would only open halfway. Minor injuries were sustained but medical attention was not sought. No warning light illuminated. On occasion, the contact mentioned that the automatic step on the front passenger side would not lower as intended and would remain up while pressing the switch. The contact also stated that the front hood does not remain open independently and would shut. An appointment with the dealer was scheduled to inspect the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the extended warranty would not cover the failures....
I am being told that the Cam Phasers need to be replaced. This is a well known issue to Ford. They did a programming adjustment in 2021, and then did replacements only if you had continued issues up until Jan 2023. I have issues now, and they are telling me I am not covered. The cam phasers have been redesigned so they know they installed poorly designed parts originally. This is an almost $4,000 repair.
The vehicle has the known cam phaser issue commonly reported on 3.5L Ecoboost engines. It is a known problem, that the dealership is so aware of they were able to provide a repair quote on the spot. The engine had less than 50,000 miles when the issue was first discovered. The safety issue is the engine failing while driving could place someone in an unsafe situation depending on how and when it failed.
After the engine would warm up a loud knocking started without warning lights. After driving it to the dealer they stated, "You need a new engine, it probably had a blown rear main". The engine has 154,550 nearly all freeway miles. Regular maintenance. No prior issues other that a deer strike, which was repaired.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH and attempting to accelerate, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway, where the failure persisted. The service engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the transmission. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, a case was opened, and the contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 55,000.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that on several occasions while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that on several occasions, the power train and check engine warning lights illuminated but then disappeared. The vehicle was steered to the side of the road and idled until the RPM became normal. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that there was a leak in the turbo hose. The vehicle was repaired but the failure reoccurred a week later. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 38,000.
Vehicle randomly downshifts into first gear and get stuck in higher gears, allowing no acceleration, causing serious traffic accident
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that there was an abnormal rattling sound coming from the vehicle while cold starting the vehicle. The contact stated that the sound went away after several minutes. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the local dealer for diagnostic testing and to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 74,000.
The car will randomly downshift or not upshift, drastically changing the handeling. It will get stuck in gears (Like 7th) and then not accelerate in traffic from a stop. The shifts are harsh enought that the tires with loose traction in wet conditions... The car is unsafe to drive and the dealer can't find a solution, other than I pay for a new transmission. The problems started with a software update for shifting into 1st gear at speed. This happens too often!
My Variable Valve Timing Actuator is not functioning properly only after 60,000 miles. Jacob's Auto Repair in Sturgis, SD had confirmed the problem. There is already a case for this problem. But my VIN number is not listed in the case and it should be as it fits all criteria. My check engine light is on.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving on several occasions at various speeds, there was a thumping sound coming from the vehicle. The check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was steered to the side of the road and turned off. The vehicle was towed to the residence. Additionally on one occasion when the vehicle was shifted into reverse, the vehicle failed to respond as intended. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that parts of the transmission needed to be replaced and an engine error code was retrieved. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,000.
Since we bought our car, it has had a rattle upon startup. This was originally a recall, which we got repaired, but this repair did not make the rattle go away. I then had a transmission problem and had to have the transmission overhauled due to it having violent, jerky, unpredictable shifting between gears. When I mentioned the rattle again while they were fixing the transmission, they said that it’s a known problem with Ford cam phasers around our model year. They informed me that the fix offered in the recall was an electronic fix, but the actual parts need to be replaced and the recall didn’t cover that. The parts replacement was almost $4000, and from my research, not replacing these parts can cause the engine to stop functioning properly over time. In the past two weeks, I have been getting safety notices from my car that there are...
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with a failed VCT phaser, a failed cam shaft sensor, O2 sensors, and a failed catalytic converter sensor. The contact was informed that the VCT phaser, cam shaft sensor, O2 sensor, and catalytic converter sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, the contact stated that the failure had occurred previously in March of 2024 however, the independent mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 118,000.
Loud knocking from engine. No check engine light came on. Dealer found the cam phasers faulty and could possibly lead to engine failure if not repaired which would put occupants in danger. Banner Ford in Monroe Louisiana performed repair at owners expense.
Ford issued a recall on the cam phasers for some vehicles this year make and model. Ours was never recalled but obviously faulty as we are having to replace the motor at 80000 miles.
The contact owns a 2019 Ford Expedition. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and attempting to accelerate, the vehicle jerked and the RPM increased quickly, after which the vehicle briefly lost motive power. The vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was unknown.
Transmission and shifting problems under 70,000 miles. Also the ac compressor and blower has gone out.
My expedition since I bought it completely turns off on me on roads and highways and throws up a wrench symbol and check engine light. Everytime I bring it in to the dealer they keep clearing codes and never fixing anything even tho I have extended warranty. They have had my car for 5-6 months maybe longer but the last time they had it for over a month said everything is fine for our roadtrip. Well the car turned off on me and died in the middle of the Utah Highway... had to be towed. was told it has 70 plus alerts
Not sure if this is the right place but it’s the cam Phaser rattle issue on the Ford 3.5 it happened to my 2012 F150 and now it happened on my 2019 expedition started about 80,000 miles now has 115 and they have refused to pay. This has been happening for at least 12 years with no accountability to ford Something needs to be done because it’s like a $4500 repair and they know that it’s a problem with these engines, but they keep selling them without fixing the problem please make them do a recall on this issue
Cam phasers are making loud noise on cold start
Ford has a recall for 2019 Expeditions. This recall replaces the Cam Phaser, which if this fails, the vehicles engine will not start. This leaves the occupants of this vehicle stranded. Our 2019 Expedition was experiencing these issues and ford acted on the recall, replacing the cam phaser at 58,000 miles. This repair/ replacement would cost the owner well over $2000.00 of out of pocket expense. Our vehicle is currently experiencing the exact same issue at 113,000 miles and Ford will not honor the recall a second time. The math doesn't lie. The life of this cam phaser is lasting under 60,000 miles. If this is a know defect by Ford Motor Co., why are they not being held accountable to fix the underlying issue, or at a minimum continue to repair the known issue?
Cam Phasers were replaced in Oct 2021 due to a service bulletin. The cam phasers are defective and have to be replaced again. This is all over forums, social media as well as dealers knowledge. Ford has redesigned the cam phasers but they refuse to cover a replacement. How is this legal when there are so many with the same problem! My Expedition is at the dealer and they have determined the issue and even filed a claim with Ford. Ford denied the claim. I don’t understand how this is even possible. This is not a small number of people with this problem. It’s massively widespread.
My Ford Expedition has lost power 4 times requiring me to pull off the Interstate and have the car towed. I have been driving 75-80 mph each time this has happened. It is as if the car takes a big deep breath, and then loses all power. It failed most recently on Halloween 2023, and then again in March of 2024. Prior to these two times, the car has lost power 2 other times. It has always been serviced at a Ford dealership. All three times INCLUDING this last time the dash lights on the car have read, "powertrain failure" and "pre-collision brake assist not available". When it failed in March, even though it registered a code both on my dash and in my Ford Pass App, the dealership said they could not reproduce the problem therefore, there was nothing they could fix. I am scared to get behind the...
