The vehicle has been in to the dealer multiple times for electrical system failures. The car is not safe to drive and has stalled multiple times while driving. The system has errors that light up stating there is an electrical system failure. The car has stopped driving in the middle of a trip, I have been stuck with my family multiple times while on short trips and long trips. The vehicle has been repaired multiple times for the same issue and it just came back again after several months being repaired. Each time the repairs occur, I end up renting a car and the time it sits at the dealer or repair shop has varied from 45 days to several days. This car needs to go. The issue first occurred a little over a year ago and has happened 3-7 times since and at random times. The issue has been...

Instrument panel went completely dark. Lost all information. Needed to pull the car over to the curb. Eventually the display reset and came back.

Multiple issues with this vehicle. Have had door handle recall completed, however now doors will randomly not open from inside or outside, even after verifying child lock is off and doors are unlocked. Same issue with trunk, almost always a fight to get it to open/release. Separate issue with windows, which will just randomly roll themselves down while driving, additionally they will roll themselves down when trying to close windows (lift switch to close windows and they roll down vs up)

The onboard system for connecting the car to the 4g data has failed. Many many people online are reporting this issue. It is a safety issue because there is a loss of the SOS system that alerts authorities that the car has crashed. It also controls the onscreen road sigh display, which could lead to excessive speed and increase the likelihood of a crash. I have been working with VW Connected Car since October 2025 and it still has not been fixed. Here is link to some of the many complaints about this safety issue. My 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 frequently disconnects from the network while driving. When this happens, multiple vehicle systems stop working as intended. The built-in GPS begins to drift or shows incorrect vehicle position, making navigation unreliable and unsafe. Other connected features (such as driver attention and traffic signs alerts) also fail or freeze. This issue occurs repeatedly, often without warning, and does not resolve itself even if the vehicle is restarted. I am concerned this is a software or hardware defect that could affect driver safety. I have contacted VW but they have not offered a solution.

The main console display (e.g. Speedometer, Cruise Control, Dashboard) is displaying an error message: "Warnings and Information not available. Drive with Greater Care". I have tried to reset the system without success.

I have open recalls on my vehicle, and Volkswagen is refusing to fix them. This includes the door handles and the battery. The battery recall has been open for a while, and NO dealership is fixing it for me. Additionally, the local dealership refused service and tried charging me to fix the recall, which is supposed to be free. The "date this incident occured" below is today, because they are completely refusing service now.

Electrical system not working correctly. Powertrain maintenance needed. Vehicle randomly had a light come on the dash, and included the message about electrical systems. Vehicle lost power, when I tried to accelerate, it was accelerating extremely slow and finally was able to get to posted speed limit of 35 in 0.5 miles. Never had a light come on until now. Recently had the 10,000 mile safety check completed by the dealer.

The infotainment screen repeatedly resets/goes black, causing the backup camera to not be displayed. Also, less frequently, the instrument cluster reboots resulting in a lack of speedometer. This was supposedly fixed in an update during a prior recall but it is still happening.

I have been experiencing intermittent, now permanent, infotainment malfunctioning. At first, it would cut in and out, even while driving. The entire screen AND my speedometer would cut out. My car is a 2021 i.d.4 and JUST fell out of warranty, which means the repairs are not covered. The VW dealership told me the 12v battery has failed AND the 5F unit has also failed. The 12v is $713.25 to replace, and the infotainment 5F unit is $1,631.93 to replace. This is a safety hazard because not being able to see my speed or turn on/off my defroster in the morning (because the screen is black and cuts out) and should be covered under a recall, as this appears to be an issue across all i.d.4 2021 models.

The car will periodically lock with the key inside the car. This is potentially deadly for women to keep their keys in their purses. When they exit the vehicle, the door may lock, trapping a small child in a hot car. I had this happen to me today, but luckily, no child was in the back seat. Browsing the VW forums, this is not an isolated incident. I contacted VW, and they did not seem to care.

After charging with my home charger, the electrical system has been one unusable or shown electrical error codes. In March 2025, the engine battery cells had a significant failure that required towing to the service center as it was completely unable to drive. This repair took 5 weeks to complete. The car had regular service and inspection 7/19/25 and issues with the navigation system and the charging port door were indicated. On 7/22/25 a warning light for electrical issues please service now came on. It was drivable to the service center but it is still not diagnosed due to another ID4 being serviced at the same time and they’re unable to work on 2. Of course with all of these downtimes we are still paying for a loan on a car we are not able to drive due to it being unsafe.

While attempting to reverse in vehicle, if you look over your shoulder to reverse, the car will intermittently turn off. There have been multiple instances on different surfaces where this has happened. The driver seat was occupied, restrained, looking over right shoulder primarily to reverse and the vehicle turns off. This is a huge safety issue, what if you are halfway into a roadway, triple checking over your shoulder and the car turns off.

1. Warning Lights Triggering at Random: The vehicle randomly displays warning lights while driving, causing me panic and concern that the car may be unsafe or about to malfunction. I have brought this to the dealership’s attention on multiple occasions ([insert dates if known]), but they were unable to diagnose or fix the problem. Despite this, the warning lights continue to appear intermittently. 2.Doors Getting Stuck from the Inside: The interior doors frequently fail to unlock or open on the first attempt, requiring multiple tries to exit the vehicle. This presents a serious safety hazard, especially in the event of an accident or emergency where quick exit from the vehicle is necessary.

After the 919A recall My screen experiences the issue that recall was supposed to fix more often now once it shut down for 10 minutes. While I was driving on the highway another time, it decided to reboot the screen and it was unable to adjust. Any of my air conditioner controls which distracted me from driving and another time it messed up while I was trying to get navigation information which also distract me from my driving which is why I think this is a serious safety issue. It doesn't do it with the reverse camera anymore, but it is still extremely unsafe and Volkswagen needs to remedy it because their recall that they said was going to fix it did not

I was driving my 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S on March 12, 2025, in Baltimore, Maryland, when I was involved in a motor vehicle accident. Although I maintained an adequate stopping distance from the truck in front of me, my forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assistance systems suddenly activated, causing my vehicle to make contact with the truck. My safety—and the safety of others—was compromised. My vehicle sustained front-end damage. This was not the first time these systems engaged without cause. I took my vehicle to Heritage Volkswagen Parkville (located in Carney, Maryland) due to unresolved recalls and these irregular system behaviors. The dealership claims that Volkswagen requires me to replace the tires, align the wheels, and install a new 12V battery before completing the recall work or troubleshooting the issue. I informed the service manager that the vehicle is unsafe to drive and that, under...

The car completely stopped without warning. The dashboard lit up with all the lights and informed me that the I need to pull over. There was no time to pull over as the car completely lost all power. The car was traveling on the freeway. It would not start back up and I needed to call 911 for help. The tow truck could not get the car started and the CHP needed to run a traffic break to get it towed off the road. The dealer could only find an NV-energy management alarm triggered and said it was ok to drive again. The next day driving on [XXX], when returning to my car the car said the vehicle electrical system had an error and I could not power it on. I requested a tow and the car is currently at the service department. Of note is when the car was...

"Error: Airbag" periodically comes on, goes off at random times. Seems to be an issue with the Passenger Occupancy Detection System Module. Nothing spilled to make this module not work properly. With this error on, it turns off the airbag for the passenger. This has been confirmed by the dealer. This error appeared without warning or incident at ~45K miles on the car.

Both screens went black while I was driving. This is after the fix from the recall.

The contact owns a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact received notifications of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 24V651000 (STRUCTURE), 23V040000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM), 25V120000 (POWER TRAIN, SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC) and 24V344000 (BACK OVER PREVENTION, EQUIPMENT, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); however, the parts to do the recall repairs were not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

This vehicle has had multiple electrical system failures that minimally disable driver assist safety features. An error message is received that the vehicle is experiencing electrical system failure. This is the third such message recieved since July 2024. I have had the vehicle serviced to resolve the prior two instances, after which the message is produced again. Given the high number of recalls for the model and the stop sale order last year, I don’t believe the manufacturer is honestly addressing the safety defects for this model. I have reported the issue to VW of America and they closed my case pending evidence. The VW dealership who serviced the vehicle purged my service records. When I produced the evidence I had of the system failures, VW of America is unresponsive.
#11640899 |
My driver side door electronics are all messed up. The electric door handle does not work from the outside. While driving however I can hear the door latch clicking like it is trying to open. I have told VW about this problem several times, but they won’t fix it.
#11639284 |
An OTA update was released for the 2021 VW ID.4, but that update ended up killing the Car Net Module. I brought the car in to the dealership due to this issue, but they were unable to do the recall because the car net module was no longer functioning. They said it would be over $1,000 to have the part replaced and then they would be able to perform the recall. So at this time my vehicle is still unsafe to drive and the dealership is refusing to do the do the recall unless we pay to have a part replaced that is required to be functioning in order to do the recall.
#11638200 |
Due to unresolved safety recalls I do not drive the VW ID4. I am afraid that I might get into an accident if the vehicle doors open, visual screen goes blank or all electrical power shuts off. NHTSA should demand VW of America to get rid of all their electric cars that have no remedy in place for safety. VW of America is putting the buyers of these vehicles in harm's way.
#11637902 |
In December the vehicle started showing a pedestrian warning sound fault light. The pedestrian warning sound was replaced by a siren that sounds like an air raid siren which makes the car virtually undriveable.
#11635515 |
The vehicle has suffered multiple failures of the main infotainment display. This screen is used to show the backup camera, as well as to adjust all vehicle settings and safety systems. The infotainment display will go black, and will not reboot or respond to touch input. This means that the backup camera is nonfunctional, as well as perimeter traffic warnings and vehicle controls for climate and safety systems. The vehicle has been serviced by an authorized VW dealer on multiple occasions, but the issue has reoccured at least three times. Each time, it has required about a month in the shop. The manufacturer has denied a buyback and states that the vehicle is performing as intended. They have also denied reimbursement of expenses. This vehicle has spent over 120 days in the service department within the previous calendar year.

The contact owns a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the instrument panel went dark for one minute displayed different colors, and then independently changed. The vehicle was serviced under NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V344000 (BACK OVER PREVENTION, EQUIPMENT, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) but the repair failed to fix the vehicle. The contact stated that the back-over prevention camera had been seized five times. The contact had paid for the recall repair and the dealer had promised a reimbursement by the manufacturer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 171,656.

The contact owned a 2021 Volkswagen ID4. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 24V6510009 (Structure) and 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electrical System) would like to be removed from the recall distribution list. The local dealer and manufacturer were contacted.

A mandatory safety software update was displayed on my screen. I followed the instructions to start then over the air update and my car never turned on again. The update fried the CPU module and VW said not our problem. Absolutely insane

Main screen goes blank sometimes when backing up Rear cross traffic warning has jammed on the breaks when nothing is nearby causing a jarring stop, VW has no fix to date and I want to get rid of this unsafe car

1. Electronic brake system failure - the vehicle exhibited this issue and so far it appears Volkswagen does not have a resolution. Vehicle has been at the dealership for almost 2 months and they have not been able to fix. Several other reports show that this is a consistent issue with the ID4 (probably the first edition). Fixed are often temporary and the issues resurfaces again 2. Battery Module issue: it appears these vehicles have defective batteries. One module was fixed by Volkswagen - however the capacity only dropped further. I suspect there is a major issue with these batteries and pose a fire hazard (similar to Chevy Bolt) and Volkswagen is intentionally concealing this fact.

The 12v battery powering the electrical system failed. This caused the vehicle to stop unexpectedly in the middle of a busy street worth traffic on either side of the vehicle. All attempts to restart the vehicle resulted in an error stating the electrical system has failed. The problem was reproduced at the dealership. The techs were unable to diagnose the errors. The manufacturer is sending a District Representative to investigate. The vehicle component was recalled in 2023 and replaced by the dealer to address this specific issue and risk. There were zero warning lights prior to the vehicle stalling. Once stalled, the vehicle was able to start, but unable to drive, and all dashboard warning lights activated.

The two noted open recalls on my 2021 ID.4 have no fix. There has already been one battery cell replaced and another has gone bad. The vehicles lease ends in two weeks and the dealer, understandably, cannot take it as a trade for another vehicle, sell it to us, or resell it as it will sit on the lot until it is picked up by Volkswagen and totaled out due to it being unsellable. However, Volkswagen has no remedy for the vehicle issues, we are now losing out on any sort of trade in value, and are expected to pay the mileage over the lease agreement for a car that will be scrapped once returned. The dealer can only do so much, but Volkswagen not stepping in to acknowledge the vehicle at this point is a lemon and they do not know how to fix it or others, but expecting...

I leased a car three years ago. This ID4 on May 15,2023 left me at a full stop in the middle of the highway. I then dropped it off to the dealer where they inspected it and saw it was a sensor/software issue, I think. They never actually disclosed the problem, nor held accountability. They insured me after almost two weeks of having to pay gas for a loaner car that they had fixed it and it was safe. After that incident and before my car had been in service countless times, all very inconvenient but not immediate safety issues, until the door handles. The door handles have been recalled twice before this last incident. My car was in there for over two weeks again back and forth. They broke my actual handles and had to go back in again, they claimed they were fixed. Now, almost 6monthankater I go...

Vehicle had a complete failure due to electrical issues and was brought to dealership. It was apparently due to recall issues which were repaired. The vehicle was returned 2 weeks ago. Today, shortly after exiting a highway, while traveling approx. 15-20mph then vehicle completely shut down. It stopped suddenly and unexpectedly and went into neutral. I could not put the car back into drive or park. The dash indicated electrical issues, airbag issues, collision sensors, brake issues and said “vehicle must not be towed”. Vehicle is currently at dealership.

The contact owns a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electrical System); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the center display failed to turn on. The contact stated while reversing at 5MPH, the rearview camera failed to engage, causing the rear vehicle panel to strike a tree and to become bent. There was no injury sustained. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the failure was related to the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 35,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

On multiple occasions this vehicle has failed to operate, a red hazard light goes on along with many other failure light indicators. I've been stranded where the car does nothing and also experienced the car dying while driving. When the vehicle comes to the airbag indicators come on warning that the airbags are not functioning. I have had to drive the vehicle this way. It's not the first time this car has had some type of electrical problems. It previously had an above lighting issue that had to be repaired. It's currently at Volkswagen of Leesburg in Florida, they are trying to figure out what is wrong with this car because they have not seen this type of failure before. It's been there for a week now. After getting stranded, vehicle failures, and electrical failures, I no longer feel safe in this vehicle. Im afraid this vehicle could have an...

This problem is very intermittent but also very dangerous. It's happened to me three times in the last month. All three times, while I was making a left hand turn, the accelerator stopped working. One time, I was making a left turn in front of 45 MPH oncoming traffic. My left turn was legal as I had plenty of room to complete my turn before the oncoming traffic arrived. My car started the turn then stopped when my car had turned to the left but was in the middle of the intersection with the right side of my car facing the oncoming traffic. I took my foot off the accelerator then pressed down on it again and the car moved forward and out of the intersection which saved me from an accident. The other two times, I didn't come close to an accident but as I was about to accelerate,...

VW still has not remedied the rebooting screens issue from their May recall. If the main driver information screen shuts off, cruise control and lane keep also shut off, which means the vehicle slows down and will not continue following the lane, resulting in the vehicle possibly being put in a dangerous situation.

My car's display screen which shows the speed has now malfunctioned twice while driving and today while reversing the car, the center screen displaying the rear camera also reset mid-driving. In both cases, I turned off the car waited a few minutes, restarted the car twice and then the display came back on but who knows when the display will crash again. I have reported this issue to VW and to a local dealership, this issue is associated with a current active safety recall on the vehicle for which VW has no remedy. This has been the status quo for over 3 months. I wonder if actual accidents have to take place and people have to die before NHITSA will issue a vehicle recall for my model of ID.4 as I am genuinely scared to use my vehicle anymore and VW HAS NO IDEA WHEN IT WILL RELEASE OR DEVELOP...

Our 2021 vw id4 has serious issues. It’s still getting addressed at the dealership and has been there since Tuesday. I had to have my husband come and pick me up because the car itself had indicated it was unsafe to drive. Please contact Jacksonville Nc Vw for our carfax report. I have detailed photos of the incident. We have purchased a second car partially bc of how many times we’ve had to leave this one for extended periods of time. This car is 3 years old. I took the car on a short trip. A minor alert started. When I went to park the car flashed through multiple alerts and started an (artificial) engine noise revving. It specifically told me to stop driving it.

We have owned the ID.4 for there years and have had to put up with many recall issues that seam to take years in order to be resolved, it took VW over a year to resolve the random door opening issues, the car still sends messages the it is opening and closing the doors indiscriminately (at any time of the night or day). Now the infotainment screen started showing multiple errors, apple CarPlay works whenever it wants, on whatever phone it chooses, the screen goes blank frequently on its own, maps and car's GPS is useless, child lock errors, range calculations are erratic making it difficult to plan to trips. The over the air updates have seam to make the problem worse. Now we are waiting for another over the air update, the roll out has been extremely slow. Again it been three years and still no resolutions. We paid...

This car has had open recalls for over a year. No dealers in the area have been able to fix them. They claim Volkswagen cannot get them parts on time. They’ve cancelled my service appointments multiple times. The car is now completely dead after a series of electrical faults and I’m unable to get in the car at all. What if my daughter was in her car seat and I was unable to get into it?! The amount of issues I’ve had with this car is insane. Constant faults including “child safety lock” not working. This is 2021 leased brand new. The recalls started over a year ago and I haven’t been able to get them fixed. Isn’t there someone sort of SLA for when a recall needs to be repaired?

Infotainment screen and instrument cluster turned off mid driving. This lead to complete failure of speed indicator. There is no speedometer available while driving. While be has an open recall it has failed to provide a solution in a timely manner.
