It is the phantom braking issue. When I was using autopilot driving at high way at around 70 miles per hour and a car behind was approaching my car, I passed a car at my right lane and changed to the right lane after I turned on the turn signal and the autopilot mode was changed to cruise control mode. As soon as I completely changed the lane, the car decrease the speed suddenly. It is dangerous since the car behind my car was close, so I had to increase the car speed by push the speed paddle. No injure happened but it is an issue needs to be fixed. I have not reported this to Tesla and have not sent the cat to the service center for inspection yet.

We rented this vehicle for 2 days, in which we experienced phantom braking thrice. It was seemingly the forward collision detection. The first time was after a car had fully crossed the highway at a reasonable distance ahead of us. The second time was when it detected cyclists along the shoulder, with no danger of collision. The third time was as we approached a sharp turn in the highway, where a semi-truck was parked/stationary on the shoulder mid-turn. In each of these instances there was no need to slow the vehicle, but the car suddenly braked almost to a complete stop. Cars around and behind us were surprised and we were forced to swerve. It is unclear if the brake lights engage during these sudden phantom braking incidents.

On June 3rd I was driving on I-80 heading West towards Chicago. The car was on Auto Pilot (Cruise Control) and traveling at 70 mph. Without any warning or warning lamps/messages the braking system suddenly applied the brakes. I had to quickly apply the accelerator. If a truck or car would have been following me closely they would not have had time to react. I am afraid to use the auto pilot in heavy traffic for fear that I could be rear ended as semis always tailgate in Chicago. I have a service appointment set with Tesla on Monday the 6th of June to have this looked at.

It suddenly stopped at highway without any warnings. It happened several times.

The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while driving 72 MPH with the self-driving feature activated, the vehicle experienced phantom braking causing the speed of the vehicle to abruptly decrease. The contact indicated that the failure had occurred on eight separate occasions while driving on the highway the same day with no other vehicles nearby to cause the system to activate. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 1,000.

Ever since Tesla removed the radar units in the Model 3 and Y phantom breaking has gotten worse and worse. I have a 2022 Model Y Performance and every time I use the Basic Autopilot, which is glorified adaptive cruise control, it will slam on its breaks for no apparent reason. It happens at night, in the day, and without any warning. I have almost been rear ended multiple times now. Tesla said they were working on a fix but that was over 6 months ago now and it's only getting worse. I am no longer comfortable using that feature with how unsafe it is.

Experienced sudden braking at 79mph on interstate Highway while using Auto Pilot
#11467450 |
Two occurrences of “phantom braking” in my new Tesla Model Y: 1) While in Autopilot on the highway traveling approximately 70mph, the computer system falsely registered a colliding vehicle and aggressively slowed down, endangering me from being rear-ended by a vehicle behind me. 2) Multiple times while in Cruise Control (not autopilot) the set speed of 65mph changed to 35mph on the highway, quickly braking endangering me from causing a collision

We were driving on interstate. We had cruise control engaged but had accelerated to pass a vehicle. The car rapidly braked with no warning, to at least 10 miles lower than our cruise control speed. There were no warnings associated with this rapid braking and there were no risk factors around us at all. This is fortunate, as if someone had been close behind us an accident could have very easily happened. -- This has happened once before, while driving on interstate. Very startling and inexplicable. -- Both times have hit the accelerator to get back to a speed appropriate to flow of traffic.

The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving approximately 75 MPH, the vehicle started braking without driver input. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 600.

This happened on our first and so far only highway drive since purchasing our 2022 Tesla Model Y LR AWD car new last week. I was driving on I-25 southbound in Wyoming north of Cheyenne. Speed limit was 80 mph (and my speed). I was using adaptive cruise control and Autosteer. Partly cloudy day, no traffic, long stretches of straight highway with gently rolling hills. Collision avoidance braking was turned on but at lowest sensitivity setting. There were several instances of phantom braking where speed dropped slightly (5-10 mph) but resumed instantly. These would not have been a problem unless someone had been tailgating me. One time, same conditions, the collision alert (red flashing lights and alarms) was set off and car did a hard braking on its own from 80 to maybe 50 before I took over control. This was very dangerous and could have caused me to be...

My vehicle hits the brakes when cruise control or autopilot is on, and it’s pretty frequent. It happens randomly when other vehicles are around but just as often when there are no other vehicles around. We passed a semi truck on the interstate doing 80, moved into the lane in front of it, suddenly my Tesla hits the brakes and goes from 80 to 60 in about a second. The semi was right on our bumper. Now when there’s a vehicle behind us we try not to have the cruise control on. I could go on and on. Bottom line is, it does it all the time, it’s not safe, and Tesla keeps telling me it’s a firmware problem. I added a screenshot of just our last drive to Denver from South Dakota. But it does it all the time.

Vehicle braking for no reason when using adaptive cruise control or autopilot. On a 485 mile trip on a 2 lane highway going one direction no oncoming traffic lanes and no vehicles close by vehicle would suddenly just slow down rapidly 20vto 30 moh. It did this 9 times until I just turned off cruise control.

In late February we were driving up California State Highway 5 at approximately 70-75 miles per hour. There were no cars within half a mile, and we had turned on adaptive cruise control. Suddenly, there was a strong brake applied for no apparent reason, which was very disturbing for the entire family. We have never turned on adaptive cruise control since. This appears to be an instance of "phantom breaking" according to our online research.

On a recent road trip we used cruise control for the first time and had multiple incidents of phantom braking. These were sudden application of brakes completely at random and repeated for no apparent reason.. We haven't used cruise control since due to the possible danger of getting rear ended. Apparently this has been reported for a year or more and currently is being nvestigated. We have had no word from Tesla warning us about this issue.

Phantom braking while using cruise control.
#11461718 |
Car set at 75 MPH cruise control, brakes unnecessary with no obstructions or danger, and reduces speed to 45 MPH while having adaptive cruise control active. Tesla response = this is a Beta feature. Read your manual. This is incredibly dangerous and a rear end collision waiting to happen. I feel like this is reckless and to just blame it on being Beta is borderline criminal.

While on cruise control, the car will, out of nowhere, apply the brakes very aggressively ("phantom breaking"). This despite there being no vehicles nearby or any potential threats to safety. This phantom braking is obviously very dangerous and is a reason why I don't really use it anymore. It has happened 3-4 times since I bought my car, and that's despite not really using cruise control very often (for this reason). Clearly there's a software fault of some kind

The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle experienced the phantom braking system failure. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to continue driving to his destination. The contact stated he experienced the failure twice. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure via the App. The failure mileage was 1,790.

The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving 80 MPH, the vehicle experienced phantom braking without warning. The contact also stated that the cruise control was activated during the failure. The contact stated that after disengaging the cruise control, the vehicle returned to normal. The vehicle was not yet taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 3,400.

When the car is in cruise control or auto pilot, it is performing a lot of phantom breaking. I.e breaking when there are no cars or other obstructions in front of the vehicle. This is a safety hazard for those vehicles that may be directly behind my vehicle increasing the risk of a rear end collision.
#11460457 |
Car randomly applies hard braking while traveling on FSD (full self driving) mode on freeway with no car or obstruction in front or back in current or adjacent lane. The brake is applied suddenly without any warning, and can result in accident if any vehicle is traveling behind.
#11460355 |
When operating my vehicle in adaptive cruise control or autopilot, my model Y has continuously had incidents where it randomly slams on the brakes as if it’s attempting to avoid an obstacle. To my frustration, there is nothing in the road and I am slammed back in my seat. What I fear the most is that a vehicle following behind me could potentially rear end me due to this braking issue. I just took a 450 mile road trip, and this incident happened a dozen times along the way. I read online and this appears to be a trend with Tesla and I want to make sure this “phantom braking” issue is reported.
#11459791 |
phantom braking sometimes is so abrupt cars behind me might rear end me
#11459666 |
We are experiencing phantom braking when using the cruise control (non-autopilot) causing significant and unwarranted slow-downs of the vehicle.
#11459469 |
My Tesla Model Y has an ongoing problem with unexpected and unnecessary automatic braking when there is no apparent reason for the system to act--there is never anything in the lane ahead to brake for. The car just brakes and rapidly slows down at highway speeds. This has not resulted in a collision yet, but I'm fairly certain that it could result in a rear end collision if the driver following my car is "tailgating." At the very least, this is likely annoying to drivers following my car when this occurs. This is a very unnerving experience and should be fixed by the manufacturer. Tesla owner forums refer to this phenomenon as "phantom braking." This only seems to occur when I'm using the adaptive cruise control and/or the autopilot features on the vehicle.I have noticed this happening often on two lane and four lane highways, but not on freeways to...

The traffic-aware cruise control triggers constant forward collision warnings on my commute, and the system highlights as threats vehicles that are parked on the side of the road safely out of the path of traffic. The warning activates automatic emergency braking, which results in a collision hazard to vehicles behind me due to unexpected and unpredictable heavy braking. I stopped using the feature after the fifth such incident within the same approximate 7 mile trip. I have read about this safety issue previously and am aware that it is under investigation by the NHTSA, but did not realize it was this bad.
#11458855 |
When driving on a two lane highway today, I had 3 episodes of the car applying the brakes to suddenly decrease speed when a vehicle was in the oncoming lane. I also had another event of emergency braking when a car was crossing the highway on a perpendicular road far ahead of my car. When I reached that road, the car had already safely crossed. Cruise control is unusable on the Tesla because of these events.

This car indiscriminately applies the brakes in a very aggressive manner on all manner of roads including multiple lane divided highways. It will regularly slow from 75 mph to under 50 mph while driving on interstate highways for no reason whatsoever. I have come close to being rear ended at least 5 times and on a recent trip to Arizona and back. One incident nearly caused a multiple car accident. This is an unacceptable fault and is very very dangerous. Tesla needs to be forced to address this problem immediately. My car does this all the time. If you want to come drive it just say the word.
#11458551 |
While using adaptive cruise control on the highway, the car applied the brakes on its own. There were no cars in front of us, nor on the side of us. We were very lucky there was no one behind us or we would have been rear-ended. We went from 70 mph to 65 mph in a matter of an instant. I was able to apply the gas to stop the braking. There were no warnings or messages ahead of the incident.

Just got the Model Y and drove from Kansas City to Denver and back to Kansas City. When using the cruise control the car would suddenly break for no apparent reason. The breaking rapidly decreases the speed of the car. This would occur multiple time without any warning or apparent consistency. Talking with other Tesla drivers at charging stations, this seems to be a well-known and common problem. Because of the unpredictable nature of this, I feel it is unsafe to use the cruise control when there are other cars present, especially cars that are behind the vehicle. I have no idea if the break lights come on with the phantom breaking occurs. If they do not, this would make the situation even worse. Cruise control has been around for years--it should work properly and **safely** on such a high-end automobile.

While using Autosteer, the automatic emergency braking engages almost every time we pass by a semi-trailer truck and while there is oncoming traffic on a two-lane road. This sudden and unprovoked engagement of the automatic emergency brake system has almost caused us to be rear ended three times over the last four days and is officially causing concern. This issue will be reported to Tesla. The problem has not been reproduced by the manufacturer or service center yet. The vehicle has not been inspected by the dealership since we drove it off the lot 3 weeks ago. Warning indications do not go off all the time

My model Y has experienced several "phantom braking" events ever since I owned it, which has been about 2 months now. This has happened when I am using the adaptive cruise control.
#11457561 |
My car has problems with uncommanded slowdowns while cruise control and/or Autopilot are active. The vehicle will slow down suddenly in any number of predictable and unpredictable situations. The extent of the slowdown is variable as well. It can range from a slight “hiccup” in the speed, which is simply unpleasant, to a significant, rapid decrease. (Like, more than 10mph, very quickly.) This can occur at various times of day, though I don’t drive much at night (it has happened then as well). Driving on any two lane road with a vehicle following at any time is risky and in my opinion hazardous. Particularly if the vehicle following is even remotely close. If the following vehicle isn’t paying attention and the car decides to brake for whatever reason (and apparently there are LOTS) that’s a collision waiting to happen. I have refused to use my car’s cruise control system since...

On two lane highway semi truck approaching car slammed on brakes. If someone had been behind us we would have caused an accident. Went from 60 to 28 in a flash.

On interstate. Semi was passing. Cruise control hit the breaks.
#11457206 | Crash
Tesla Y has a special setting for carwashes, that driver has to enable, which puts the car in neutral, closses all the windows and plus some more. Unfortunately system failed; car accelerated on its own and I hit a car in front of me, so it failed the second time and car didn't stop on its own to avoid collision. I called Tesla and this incident is under their investigation.
#11457012 |
I was driving with the automatic emergency breaking system on and the car slammed on the breaks when traveling at around 35 MPH even though no car or other object was in my path of travel. It just slammed on the breaks for no reason.
#11457058 |
While cruise control is engaged, the vehicle will slam on the brakes when there are no obstacles or vehicles nearby. It happens out of nowhere and without any warning from the vehicle. We live in a more rural area and has happened on the interstate there each time. It is not a highly congested road and each time it has happened, there is nothing around. It has happened on numerous occasions and will take the car from 80 mph and attempt to stop completely. This could easily cause a rear end collision at high speeds if there had been a vehicle in close proximity. This has also happened even with the Automated Emergency Braking disabled.

The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH with the Self Driving feature activated, the vehicle experienced phantom braking. The dealer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was in learning mode and needed a software update. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50.

While driving at highway speeds the vehicle will brake suddenly. This has happened more than eight times in a single 100 mile trip. Potential for crash at high speeds and very unnerving for the driver and passengers.
#11456313 |
When I have Autopilot (adaptive cruise) on, the car will often slow down, sometimes quite abruptly, when there is nothing to slow down for. This is often called Phantom Braking. This can easily put me at risk of getting rear-ended from another car. If I'm on ice or snow it can cause the car to slide and loose control. I have read on the internet and forums of many with 2021 or 2022 Model Y's with the same problem - since the radar was removed on these newer cars. I had a 2020 Model Y previously that had the radar, and I never had this problem. I believe their camera only technology is not enough to suffice and they need the redundancy of both radar and cameras.
#11456381 |
Phantom braking occurs under too many scenarios common on 2-lane roads to mention them all. Sometimes the car decelerates so rapidly for no apparent reason I'm concerned I'll be rear-ended. Even in good weather, lighting, road surface, etc. The car sometimes seems to be guessing about hazards and slowing down for no reason, sometimes very abruptly.

Sudden braking when TACC is engaged happens sporadically
#11455326 |
I had cruise control set(Autopilot) and was driving on a two lane highway at night. My car abruptly braked when oncoming traffic was detected. Another oncoming car on the same road, caused my car to abruptly brake again. Then a third car a couple of minutes later caused my car to abruptly brake again. I turned the cruise control(Autopilot) off, to prevent my car from emergency braking. The problem was not reported since I couldn't repeat the issue. It has not been inspected by anyone. No warnings on vehicle.

While driving from San Francisco to Salt lake city and back on highway 80 this past week, my vehicle frequently experienced “phantom braking” while using “autopilot”. At least 15 times on the drive, my car, while using “autopilot”, would forcefully apply the brakes when no hazard was present. While most times it slowed the car from 80mph to 70-75 and then resumed normal operation, one time it slammed on the brakes so hard and dropped the vehicle speed down to 50 before I could intervene and avoid a rear end collision. The system was even worse at night, but only when passing large semi-trucks. They were in the right lane and as my car would approach to pass in the left lane it would slam on the brakes and slow down. It got to the point where I would turn off autopilot every time I was about to pass a...

Phantom Braking occurred four times in under an hour. Sunny conditions, clear lines.

We recently purchased this vehicle and was driving down the highway with zero traffic near us in any lane and the Model Y slammed on the brakes for no apparent reason. Luckily no one was behind us. This continues to be a problem with phantom braking for no reason. It’s very dangerous and almost makes the vehicle unable to be driven.
#11455116 |
I experienced two incidents of phantom braking while making a round trip from Reno Nevada to Sacramento California on Interstate 80 on March 3, 2022. The first incident (approx. 10:15 AM) occurred west bound and west of Donner summit. My speed was approximately 70 MPH traveling in the right lane. Several big rig trucks were parked on the shoulder. There were no cars directly in front of me and one car slightly ahead in the left lane. Autopilot was engaged. Suddenly the car braked violently and reduced speed to under 40 MPH. I retained control and continued driving. In the second incident (Approx. 1:30 PM) my wife was driving east on I 80 (with autopilot engaged) at approximately 70 MPH. As she attempted to change lanes to allow a car to pass to our left, emergency braking again was violently engaged. The car behind us had to take very quick...

Using autopilot (adaptive cruise control) on a two lane highway. Vehicle slammed on brakes when a semi truck was passing on the other lane. Happened three times on same trip. False braking was not consistent as it happened once as semi passed beside us, once when the other vehicle was at least 100 yards away and once again when another truck was about 25 yards away. Lane in front of us was clear with no traffic in front of us. This did not happen on divided highways. Only on two lane highways at speeds above 55mph. In one occasion braking was so severe that vehicle slowed down from 55mph to about 20mph. A car behind us almost rear ended us. They honked their horn at us as they believed we were "break checking". Not the case. My wife asked to turn feature off and won't use until something is done...
