2022 TESLA MODEL Y Forward Collision Avoidance Automatic Emergency Braking Problems

I have experienced "phantom braking" with this vehicle from the time I received it in Feb '22. There have been over 20 incidents. I do not feel safe using the cruise control in traffic or when any car is following me. It could very easily cause an accident. When cruise control is on, it will randomly apply emergency braking. Yes the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. My safety and the safety of vehicle following me is at risk because the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly applies emergency braking. I have not tried to address the issue with Tesla. There are never any warnings that this may happen. This is very unsafe and with the number of vehicles with this known issue, I hope the NHTSA applies pressure to Tesla to fix the problem asap. My car came with a factory hitch adapter. I was hauling a flat bed trailer with a load of about 10 20' 2x4s on it home for my foundation. At approximately 65 miles per hour, out of no where, with no other cars around, on a sunny day, and on a straight section of 2 lane road, the car suddenly applied the brakes hard, to the point that I was afraid of the load on the trailer shifting and hitting the car even though it was tied on well. This is just the worst example of this annoying behavior that I can't seem to disable on my new Model Y. Travelling on open highway (no other cars around) - attempted to use our AutoPilot/Cruise Control on the new Tesla for the first time. We engaged the system and it maintained the speed limit for a minute or two and then for no reason applied the brakes rapidly reducing speed. Thankfully no cars were behind us - but the force was so strong it did cause back/neck strain. We thought maybe we had done something wrong - tried again two more times - always on open road - no other cars around - and always the same action. We have concluded we cannot use this feature at all - it does not feel ready or safe.

RE: Problems with cruise control and random braking I purchased the above model Y performance in June 2022 and we just took our first road trip the last two weeks of August 2022. We started in Sacrament, California and drove to Twin Falls, Idaho, Salt Lake City and return to Sacramento, CA. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? It get to the point I would rather disable its safety feature and drive manually. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? None. Note the driver is deaf, so they are also poor in visible warning compared to audio warning.

Phantom braking was caused numerous times (over 20) during a 2000 mile roadtrip that seemed to be caused by autopilot misinterpreting heat mirages into an object to avoid. This caused the speed of the car to drastically reduce leading to unsafe braking conditions which caused several near rear collisions.

When using the autopilot adapative cruise control feature, the car will regularly think there is a reason to slow down suddenly (the "phantom braking" common complaint). I only use the car on trips, and this happens frequently. While on Route 152, this happened multiple times on a stretch of road that is long and flat. There were no other cars around (and fortunately, none behind me). This probably happened 5-6 times during a 50 mile drive. More recently, it happened on Hwy 99 at least twice in about 30 miles of driving. There were more cars behind me so it felt very unsafe. There was no reason to brake however. Phantom Braking. The most recent instances of phantom braking occurred on a recent trip to Lake Tahoe. The car phantom braked on the way there on the I-5 on August 5th in the afternoon. I don’t have the exact time, the braking surprised us so much that we didn’t think to enter a “bug report”. The I-5 at that section is a 4 lane divided highway. I think the cause of the phantom braking may have been a bridge that had a slight rise, causing the cameras to think there was oncoming traffic. I have had several incidents with this car. When using either the autopilot feature or just the cruise control. The vehicle randomly brakes very suddenly. It happens frequently when there is nothing in front of us. The two most recent incidents clearly present a huge safety risk. We were driving on the interstate, there was a semi next to us. We were in the left lane going 75 mph. The car suddenly braked for no reason and in a matter of seconds we went from 75 to 55 mph. Had the semi been behind us we would be dead. The other most recent incident was on a four lane highway. There was a truck behind us. We only had cruise control on and again the car suddenly hit the brakes for no reason. We are on a cross country trip on open highway and it randomly applies the breaks hard at times for no apparent reason.

I took delivery of a Tesla Y in February 2022. About a half dozen times since, I've been driving on the highway using cruise control/auto pilot and the car will randomly slam on it's brakes, so hard that loose objects in the car are flying to the front. There was no warning prior or any of these incidents. Thankfully I have not had cars directly behind me when this occurred...if there had been someone behind me they would have absolutely hit me. I have not yet contacted Tesla.

The "advanced autopilot" feature is extremely dangerous in certain conditions especially construction zones, if a bug is on the windshield, while it is raining or night time without street lamps. I purchased this car as a full time rideshare driver for nearly $100,000 after driving the car for less than 1 month the car has terrified myself, my passengers and my pregnant wife and luckily hasn't killed any innocent bystanders, yet. While in autopilot the car will frequently 'phantom brake' when there is literally no vehicles in front of it, quickly reducing speed from 70mph down to 40mph. This most recent time 7/28/2022 I had a garbage truck like vehicle behind me but thank God I have excellent reaction time and canceled the autopilot and smashed the accelerator just in time before causing a pileup on the expressway. As I was pulling into my driveway with the autopilot completely OFF the car started to accelerate hard on its own which could have resulted in an accident had I not been ready for it. Also unrelated to the previous statement; Driving along at 37 mph with the autopilot on, the car slammed on the brakes for no apparent reason nearly resulting in a rear end collision to my car.

We have owned the car approximately 2 weeks and have had 3 episodes of inappropriate activation of emergency braking. The first two were minor slowing of the vehicle when traveling on interstate highway when the system was activated by dips in the road. The third involved a parked pickup truck on the shoulder of the outside curve of a road - resulting in aggressive braking of our vehicle. Frightening. In accelerating of itself, both my own life and that of a potential bystander were in danger. I had no time to react to the sudden acceleration. While driving on highways /interstates and using the vehicle cruise control or autopilot, the vehicle will suddenly apply the braking system when there is nothing in front of it. I would list specifics, but it happens every time that we take the vehicle on the highway/interstate, usually within the first 15 minutes. This has happened multiple times on trips, at 80mph (South Dakota) or at 65mph. I have noticed that white vehicles tend to trigger it more than others, even if they are just sitting on the side of the road or parked in a driveway off of the highway. Phantom braking — the car brakes for no reason in navigate on autopilot as well as adaptive cruise control. The phantom braking is particularly extreme on I80 through Nevada and US Rte 95 through Oregon, which is a two-lane road.

I received my 2022 Tesla Model Y a few weeks ago and quickly began to notice intermittent sudden breaking when utilizing the "Auto-pilot" feature. Because of these incidents I rarely utilize this feature any more. Today during an out of town trip, on two occasions when utilizing cruise control the car suddenly applied its breaks. During both occasions there were no other vehicles within 100 yards and the freeway (I-17 in Arizona) opposite direction lanes were separated by hills/rocks and not in direct eyesight.

On several occasions when in Autopilot the car suddenly rapidly brakes and decelerates for no reason. Last time was this past weekend and car behind barely avoided a collision.

Over the last few weeks I've been on several long road trips. During this time I've experienced "Phantom Breaking" (Breaking that I didn't cause) - abruptly. Very strong breaking at time. It happens around once every 40 to 100 miles of driving. It happens when using Cruise Control or when using Enhanced Autopilot. It seems extremely dangerous at times and has caused at least one care behind us to swerve into a passing lane.

When I was on a road trip I had my 2022 Tesla Model Y in autopilot and with out warning it gave myself and my passengers whip lash because it brakes for no reason. On the course of my road-trip it happened more times than we could count. One horrific time was when a white Cadillac Escalade was tailgating me the Tesla threw on the brakes heavily and almost caused the car behind me to hit me. The car had several hard braking incidents while using the adaptive cruise control/autopilot. The hard brake incidents seemed correlated to dark areas on the highway pavement. The incidents appeared correlated with actual darker pavement as well as shadows from overhead bridges.

Braking system applied brakes while on the interstate going 75+ MPH no reason to brake, happens quickly on most instances, I hurry to hit the accelorator to speed back up to speed as to not cause any incidents. First several times it is very uncomfortable to experience, causing concern to be easily hit from the rear in areas with more traffic. The issue is not reproduced as it seems to happen when the car "thinks" it has a reason to brake,different enviromental changes such as cars, in the other lane, or shadows seem to have an affect as well. NO inspections have been completed at this time. No warnings seem to be triggered when this takes place, just rapid unexpected deacceleration.

I was traveling on the highway in Indiana between Bloomington and Indianapolis. I started to experience the car braking for no apparent reason. As I continued on my trip and reached a top speed of 75 mph, the car suddenly and without warning slammed on the brakes! It took me a minute to react and regain control of the car. The car was delivered to me today. It has 15 miles on the odometer. The brakes do not work. I almost crashed into a home. Extreme safety concern. The next device appointment is July 20th. I will wait for them to diagnose the issue. Very concern this auto manufacturer is delivering faulty brand new products to consumers.

While driving at a normal speed and turning around at an intersection in our neighborhood, the car suddenly went out of control, causing the car to hit a fire hydrant in front of a home, smashed a tree before crashing into the siding of the home. Insurance deemed the car as "totaled". We were reimbursed by insurance so this is not about monetary losses, but a report to protect other drivers and their families. The Tesla database records mentioned user acceleration and error, but this doesn't sound like a reasonable cause. The airbags didn't open and neither did the automatic emergency braking or forward collision warning work. I was unable to brake and control the car to stop. This accident is captured in the security system video of the impacted home.

The adaptive cruise control (or emergency braking system) repeatedly braked for no reason. There were not other vehicles in the immediate area. Traveling approximately 900 miles from fairfield, ca to moab, utah on 15th of June 2022 and approx 900 miles back to fairfield on the 20th of June 2022. Several dozens of phantom braking in the absence of any vehicles or shadows along its path. Brakings were hard and dangerous.

I was traveling on a highway when my Tesla Model Y abruptly slammed the brakes for no reason while Autopilot was engaged. The vehicle slowed down very aggressively, this could have caused an accident if there was another vehicle following close behind me. The car will break for no reason when cruise control is enabled or autopilot. This happens at least once every time I use it. The deceleration is abrupt and could cause someone to rear end me. The cruise control is useless because it’s so bad.

The car was being driven on a low speed road (about 30mph) and suddenly the traction control, ABS, power steering, and all drivers assistance features (automatic vehicle hold, emergency braking, etc) all went out as well. Reporting “phantom braking” issues during 1600 mile cross-country from Kansas to California. During this trip there were approximately 45 incidences of the rapid uncommanded braking while on 4 lane divided highways. All driving was daytime, sunny weather at speeds between 70-80 mph. I have encountered several "phantom" braking events while driving my Tesla Y in auto-pilot mode, all on the freeway or highway. This most recent event occurred while returning from Las Vegas. In each case, something dark across the road triggered the event. In two cases it was dark asphalt strips that were perpendicular to the highway. in the other case, it was a dark shadow of a bridge across the highway. I assume the car's auto-pilot system thought these things were solid objects and therefore braked. My car, while in autopilot, panic brakes for no reason. We took a trip cross country and this happened at least 20 times at highway speeds. Phantom Braking. I was on Auto Pilot on the freeway traveling at 75 mph. All of a sudden the car did an automatic hard brake and the car started to veer toward the center divider. The car only had 64 miles and was brand new. This was the first time I had used autopilot and had been on the freeway. There was a truck on my right and it was a 2 lane freeway. Nobody has inspected the car.

While on autopilot my car will randomly brake hard. This issue seems to occur when passing a semi truck on a curve or narrow roadway; when shadows or pavement color creates a clear contrast, and other instances for seemly no good reason.

Phantom Breaking. I was driving just after the sunset on the highway 101 with autopilot/FSD engaged today 06/05/2022 at about 8.15 pm. The car was driving over 70 mph but suddenly it applied break for no obvious reason. There was a truck behind me and I was really afraid I would be rear ended, but luckily I took the control and was able to avert the situation. It is a significant safety issue and I am afraid riding Tesla with autopilot engaged.
