When the ADS is engaged you can not reliably drive the vehicle due to phantom braking events which puts us at risk of being rear ended at highway speeds. Has occurred on numerous dates.
* on rural roads at night, utilizing either cruise control or autopilot is super dangerous. ANY oncoming traffic will cause the vehicle to audible warn, and slam on the brakes. * I was almost rear-ended multiple times by vehicles following closely when the car decided to slam on the brakes. * I can reproduce it, and I have recorded it. * no * no symptoms prior to failure. Occurred on brand new car, started on the very first night driving it in rural environment.
on 2/25/22 I was driving on a two lane road. Speed limit was 55. I set driving assistance/adaptive cruise (we do not have the option for fully automated driving) and things were fine for 20 minutes. At some point there was a significant slow down despite the fact that there were no cars in my lane ahead of me. I'm not sure if the car detected another car coming from far away in the other lane or why it was that the car significantly slowed down.
On the freeway, the car significantly slows when it perceives a hazard, despite no hazard. It’s the phantom breaking and it reduces the speed suddenly and alarmingly, and it renders the cost and benefit of the vehicle much less valuable.
I was driving along Highway 101 southbound with not so many cars around cruising around 65mph while on autopilot and suddenly the car just braked really hard. The car's velocity dropped to about 15mph in just 1-2 seconds. This is really scary and dangerous and luckily there is no other car behind us or else we could've been rear ended really bad. There was no warning or anything and it was about 2pm when the sun was up and really bright and no clouds at all.
While driving on auto pilot/cruise control mode on a 2-lane local road it suddenly applies brake very hard whenever a truck or trailer is approaching from the opposite lane. At night it suddenly brakes very hard whenever headlights of a car from the opposite lane appears. I accepted delivery on 2/23/2022 and I have had it only 1 day ownership but it has happened every time a truck passes or head lights show up.
Driving down the road on Cruise control and car will slam on the brakes and you almost get rear ended every time. Scary to say the least.
When driving on a two lane highway (US 131 and US 115) at speeds of 55-70mph in clear weather with adaptive cruise control engaged over a 4 day period and covering ~500 miles, this car starts emergency braking (warning chime and sudden deceleration) EVERY time the car interacts with an oncoming tractor trailer going the opposite direction. It will sometimes do this for multiple, closely following cars coming the opposite direction. It will additionally slow down when overtaking tractor trailers on the expressway (I-75) traveling at speeds of 70-85mpg when passing on the left and rounding gradual curves.
While using adaptive cruise control at highway speeds, the car suddenly engaged the brakes. This occurred both on a multilane highway (with no direct oncoming traffic) as well as on a smaller single lane highway with oncoming traffic in the adjacent lane. When it happened on a multilane highway, there were no cars ahead of me at the time. I was passing a large exit sign located on the side of the road. When it happened on the single lane highway, there was a semi truck headed towards me in the adjacent lane. On the multilane highway, it was fortunate that there was nobody behind me as the brake application was forceful and could have resulted in me being rear-ended. On the single lane highway, it was a terrifying experience because the brakes engaged rapidly as a truck was approaching at highway speeds. The problem has not been confirmed by...
Bought this car three weeks back. It has the issue oh phantom braking. Where car start braking out of nowhere when on autopilot. No object is detected during this
While traveling down a two lane road using adaptive cruise control and no one in front of me, the car rapidly decelerating replicating the often reported phantom braking event. This happened three times in roughly a mile before I disengaged autopilot.
WHEN IN AUTO PILOT MODE, THE CAR WOULD SUDDENLY BRAKE FOR NO APPARENT REASON. I WAS AFRAID I WOULD GET HIT FROM BEHIND. I REPORTED THIS TO THE LOCAL TESLA DEALER. HE ACKNOWLEDGED OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THERE IS NOTHING THEY COULD DO NOW.
Phantom braking on 2 lane roads when using adaptive cruise control or autopilot.
I was driving with the autopilot engaged and the car unexpectedly slammed on the brakes. This happen 2 more times and I disengaged the autopilot and did not turn it back on.
I was driving on freeway 101 north in LA and was merging into freeway 405 north. My auto pilot was engage and my car suddenly Decided to apply the breaks and reduce the speed from 65 miles per hour to around 45. This was done while there were no visible vehicles in sight and in front of me. The auto pilot is quite unreliable.
While traveling on I81, at dusk, on 2/16/2022, the car automatically, with no apparent reason, momentarily applied the brakes, causing the car to veer sharply to the left - this occurred twice on a 20 mile trip - once while passing a semi, once while driving under an overpass - autopilot was with ‘distance speed control’ on - car is new with less than 300 miles (purchased on 2/11) - Because to this, I consider the car to be unsafe to drive with autopilot ‘on’
Coming from a 2017 Tesla Model S and a 2018 Tesla Model 3 to a 2022 Model Y the experience has been jarring. Tesla's driver assistance system, termed "Autopilot" has become almost unusable due to multiple, frequent, incidences of phantom-braking: 1. On a two-way road, when there are trucks in the oncoming lane, my 2022 Tesla Model Y Vision-only (Tesla removed radar) the car will slam its brakes 2. On a divided, limited-access highway, my 2022 Tesla Model Y will randomly slam its brakes. There are all safety issues because it can brake without any warning or logical indication why it should be braking, and cars behind me can very easily crash into me. Tesla did NOT have this issue, or at least not this prevalent, with my 2017 Model S and 2018 Model 3 that included both radar and vision for their driver assistance system.
On multiple occasions the Tesla Model Y has performed what is deemed "phantom braking" while on the highway, causing my car to frantically slam on the brakes while using cruise control. This happened several times and I am not afraid to use cruise control. It only occurs when I have cruise control or 'autopilot' engaged, and out of nowhere the car will respond like it sees something in the road and either cut cruise control out, which engage regenerative braking, or will just apply the brakes at a rapid rate. Fortunately the majority of the time this occurred at night time without any cars directly behind me, but it has made me worried to use cruise control. The last time this happened was around December 31st and I have not been comfortable using cruise control since then.
Today I was driving to work using the adaptive cruise control and the car applied brakes for no valid reason, this sudden deceleration could have caused an accident.
The car is automatically braking when it sees an approaching vehicle in the oncoming lane (2 lane highway). It puts me at risk for being hit from behind due to unexpected braking. The car is also occasionally going into the left turn lane instead of staying straight when on auto drive mode and then quickly veering out of the lane.
When using traffic aware cruise control or Autopilot, the car will slam on the brakes when it sees a large vehicle, like a semi truck or bus, in the oncoming lane. It happens about 50% of the time when there is a truck in the oncoming lane. Recently, on a drive up highway 88 near Jackson, this happened 8 times over a 40 mile stretch. It doesn’t just slow down— it tries to come to a full stop, snapping my head forward. I nearly lost control several times. I no longer feel safe using cruise control at all, under any circumstances.
Vehicle experiences "phantom braking" where during use of TACC or "Autopilot" it will suddenly and drastically slow down without warning. This seems to occur when it falsely detects another vehicle is about to enter the same lane either with oncoming or merging traffic. Seems to be more severe with poor lighting conditions (dawn, dusk, nighttime) and on two-lane undivided roads.
Autopilot feature hard braked twice suddenly while driving on highway . I was next to another car .I was shocked Auto lane departure with over taking slow traffic . While overtaking the car gives left signal option to lane change and then while crossing the vehicle in the right it gives another signal to turn right or tries to turn while the vehicle is still there in the blind spot . This happen nee few times which is scary .
The vehicle, while in Autopilot, has demonstrated "phantom breaking" on three occasions, two of which occurred on the same trip. The first was at night traveling on a highway with no vehicles in front of the car while the car was traveling 70 mph (the posted speed limit). (details on speed and mileage included below) This almost caused the car behind us to rear end our car. The second occurred during the day as we were traveling over a bridge on an off ramp at approximately 50 mph and both my children, who were sleeping, were unprepared for a sudden stop and complained about pain from the safety restraint system. The third was on a highway at 70 mph, and there was less of an effect as I was holding my foot above the throttle in the event this happened again. My wife asked that I no longer use this...
While using the Autopilot feature, the car applied the brakes many times for no reason. One incident was so severe that I decided to disable the autopilot feature for the rest of the trip so as not to put the drivers behind me in a dangerous situation.
Phantom Braking While using Autopilot (cruise control), my Tesla Model Y without warning slows the car from the speed limit (ex: 60mpg) down to half the speed or less. This usually occurs when the is a large approaching vehicle (semi or box truck) or when going around corners with a solid background (trees or large rocks). I assume this is because the car believes a collision is imminent and is trying to avoid it. Once the vehicle is past the car continues as if nothing occurred. The first time this happened was very scary and I ad no idea why it happened. Now I keep my foot resting above the gas pedal which keeps the car from severe braking action if you depress pedal right away. I mostly do not use cruise control on two lanes roads with lots of traffic for safety reasons, especially if there's someone following too...
While operating the cruise control on two-lane roads, the Tesla Model Y will frequently engage the emergency stop/warning function. NOTE: no autopilot has been used. There is no lane swerving or concern of the car approaching in the opposite lane or is the Model Y in any unsafe operating situation. This occurs in almost every driving situation with the cruise control engaged (two-lane roads) and has been documented with other passengers in the automobile. Obviously, this creates a panic situation for the driver and passengers while also creating a very unsafe operation for following cars. Multiple dates/times and weather conditions were mostly clear, i.e. no rain. As a note, we have owned a 2016 and 2018 Tesla Model S that did not have this problem.
At highway speeds using adaptive cruise or autopilot, vehicle suddenly brakes and veers towards the shoulder of the road. This occurs when a large vehicle such as a bus or semi is approaching from the opposite direction. Emergency break came close to causing a rear end collision today 2/17/22. Contacted Tesla service for investigation and repair.
As per many similar complaints, my Model Y while on cruise control will suddenly brake for absolutely no reason. I have almost been rear ended on the highway while traveling at 74 miles per hour. The car drops 20-40 MPH seemingly for absolutely no reason. I believe that this has been dubbed "Phantom Braking". Add me to the list!
While driving on a two lane highway at 70 mph on cruise control oncoming semi’s will cause the automatic braking system to drastically put on the brakes to 20 mph in 1 second, causing everyone in the car to lurch forward and pissing off the cars behind me to the point of almost rear ending me and causing road rage. I don’t want to neither be rear ended or shot at by these drivers behind me so cruise control is worthless and unusable on this dangerous car
The vehicle control system intermittently commands hard braking at highway speed when there are no obstacles or vehicles nearby. This sometimes happens repeatedly over a period of several minutes and sometimes doesn't happen for weeks at a time. The braking and deceleration is so rapid as to result in difficulty controlling the car and potential hazard to cars following behind. After repeated "bug reports" to Tesla, nothing has changed. They issue a software update with a new game, but don't fix the hazardous problems.
While driving in Autopilot, the car rapidly decelerated from 55mph to 35mph two times about 30 seconds apart, when two separate semi trucks were approaching me in oncoming lane, not crossing the lane or anything on a two way road. Seems to be well known as "phantom braking", but i just got the car yesterday and have put less than 30 miles on the car and already experienced this phantom braking twice. (Car currently has 60 miles on it) To note i did test drive a 2020 Model Y in December 2020 and did not experience this at all when using Autopilot on that car.
When using autopilot, the car brakes at all sorts of non-events incl curvy roads, shiny puddles, undulations, trucks going the other way without incident, and more.
Car breaks hard suddenly when in cruise control- multiple times ands every time it’s in CC.
I was driving on a snowy narrow two lane road at 9:45am. There was no one in front of me and no oncoming traffic. The car suddenly applied the brakes, hard (along with an alarm and notice on screen that the emergency breaking system had been applied). It was only for a moment and the car dropped about 10 mph. What made the situation particularly troubling is that the road was very slippery in many areas as it was snowing and I was in a reduced salt area near a reservoir. If this had happened 500 yards earlier or later I would likely have gone off the road. This Tesla has the latest software update 2022.4.5. The dealer will be looking at the car in a week.
I was driving on left lane of divided interstate highway in daytime with great visibility. There were no cars in front of me. I was using Tesla Autopilot with speed limit set to 75mph. Suddenly car applied brakes hard and within second of my reaction time dropped speed to 40mph, before I was able to press accelerator to override braking. Two cars behind me had to slam on the brakes and one had to swerve to avoid rear end collision. This phantom braking in very good conditions was totally unexpected and nearly ended up in high speed rear end collision with my wife and kids in the car.
Car phantom braked when in a 2 lane highway when there was an approaching car in the opposite lane. No danger of the other car colliding but Tesla braked for no reason. Happened multiple times while using Autopilot.
Phantom breaking. While on traffic aware cruise control, we have experienced several episodes of sudden hard breaking for no reason. Fortunately, no one was following closely. The car is available for inspection. Hard sudden unexplained breaking increases risk of rear end collision. No inspections have been performed. But I did discuss it with a Tesla mechanic. He was familiar with the problem and stated that even tho my vehicle does not have radar, it has the bracket and the wiring so it can be installed later. Supply chain issues was mentioned as a possible reason for its absence. No warnings prior to breaking. Simultaneous with phantom breaking is audible alarm. This last occurred yesterday Feb 10, 2022 mid morning. Good road conditions.
I do not have full self driving on my car. However, the cameras installed are active when I use just normal cruise control. Trying to drive between the Minneapolis area to Pipestone, MN on Christmas day the car several times hit the brakes for me unexpectedly while in cruise control. We were on various roads, mostly at night, and with many times no seeable vehicles nearby. Other times it would be a vehicle coming at us in the proper lane next to us. I cannot use cruise control on this car for fear that a car will rear end me.
While driving on a single lane road in Bismarck, ND in low light conditions the car did what we call phantom braking anytime a oncoming car would be approaching.
Phantom braking when cruise control activated. Car will randomly reduce speed and / or brake when driving on highway or 2 lane highways. Makes cruise control unusable as it’s dangerous
Driving on HWY 101 just north of Santa Barbara California with cruise control on, the car suddenly braked dropping from 70 to 40. I pulled onto the shoulder so no one would rear end me. There was nothing in front of me in either lane. Luckily, there was also nothing behind me. This had happened previously but the slowing was far less abrupt and recovered immediately. I sent an email to the person with whom I dealt at the Tesla showroom saying I wanted to report this to Tesla, but have not heard back. Please advise on how I can report this to Tesla.
The car does phantom braking and creates dangerous situation on the highway. Happened many times on cruise control and autopilot.
On many occasions the car slams on the brakes when there is no reason. Sometimes there is a car approaching from the other direction but not encroaching in my lane.
When on auto pilot or even simple cruise control the car often forcibly brakes for no apparent reason. It will sometimes brake when another vehicle is in the other lane or for no reason at all. I have asked the service center about the issue and they claim they have never heard of the problem. This is a very dangerous problem as it could cause a vehicle behind me to rear end me and cause damage or injury. It is terrifying when it happens.
I was driving on the highway using Autopilot, and the brakes engaged very suddenly without any warning signal nor was there anything in front of my car. (Aka “phantom braking” event).
I was driving 75mph on a divided highway. I was in the left lane passing a slower vehicle in the right lane. There was nothing in front of me. A pickup truck was a couple of car lengths behind me passing the vehicle on the right too. As we were passing the vehicle attempted to stop for absolutely no reason whatsoever. My Tesla Model Y essentially slammed on the brakes going 75mph with a vehicle behind me. There was zero reason to do this and was dangerous as I could have been rear ended.
While driving on freeway car drastically brakes for no apparent reason, almost getting rear ended by car behind me. This happens while cruise control is on, several times! Very dangerous
While in autopilot (driver assistance feature which keeps the vehicle in the lane and keeps a specified distance from the car in front of you) the car braked multiple times with no obstacle in front of the vehicle. Often referred to as phantom braking, the safety of others and yourself is at risk if there is a car behind you and your vehicle brakes for no apparent reason on the highway. I believe this is a known issue with other similar complaints.
Multiple occasions while using autopilot on 2 lane roads when semi trucks are coming in the opposite direction the Tesla will brake hard saying impending accident when the semi is staying in its lane ….it happens about 80 percent of the time. It’s so bad I will not use this feature till it’s fixed as it’s dangerous
