I am reporting a repeated safety defect that happens only in rainy conditions. My 2022 Tesla Model Y repeatedly shows critical safety warnings including “Automatic Emergency Braking unavailable”, traction and stability control disabled, and “Vehicle Hold unavailable”. This has occurred during normal driving in rain every rainy season for 3 years, despite 4 service visits and parts replacement including the inverter. On [XXX], while using Full Self-Driving (FSD) to drive to a hospital in Oak Park, Illinois, the vehicle experienced sudden unintended acceleration during the disengagement of FSD. As the vehicle approached the hospital area, I initiated disengagement of FSD to manually enter the parking area. During—or immediately after—the disengagement, the vehicle suddenly accelerated at full power without warning, causing an immediate loss of control and a collision with a nearby fixed structure. After installing the most recent Tesla software update, my vehicle immediately displayed multiple alerts: traction control disabled, stability control disabled, and reduced steering assist. Steering consistently made rattling/clicking noises, coming from under near the steering column. Car was taken to Tesla Service Center, and service center replaced the front lower lateral and compliance link assemblies due to worn bushings. For additional context, this car has only 38,000 miles on the odometer, driven primarily in Southern California.

The contact stated that while washing the vehicle, the contact became aware that the entire inner sidewall of the tires were warped and damaged, and the TPMS warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed, and the contact was advised that a cause for failure could not be determined; however, the tires were replaced and the front-end aligned. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure persisted, and the contact became aware that the tires displayed inner sidewall damages. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 21,000.

The car will continue losing power steering while driving making it very hard to steer. It has happened at all levels of speed.

Driver side control arm while driving separated. I heard a loud thump and then the front driver side portion of the vehicle drop down. After further investigation, I have seen numerous vehicles have this exact same issue on multiple forums. Two incidents: 1) Non-accident: My wife was slowing to make a right turn at a stop light and the steering locked up for about 3 seconds, where she wasn't able to regain manual steering control. We did not have full self-driving mode at the time. Driving in traffic this afternoon, I was turning right at a controlled intersection. I stopped my car during the turn before entering the stream of right-bound traffic. Abruptly my steering wheel was frozen: I was unable to turn the steering wheel and the car would not drive forward. Due to NHTSA Recall Number 23V-838, the car has become more dangerous than before. Often making me apply more force on the wheel when constantly alerting me which has inadvertently made me swerve into oncoming lanes. Not only has this mandatory recall made the autopilot experience much worse, but it seems highly politicized by the previous leader of nhsta and should be reinvestigated. This is such a failure of over regulation over biased leadership and should not be tolerated.

I received a power steering reduced notice on the car screen and the power steering failed. Restarting the car resolved the issue. There was a technician present when this occurred and he could not discover why it happened. If I had been driving at high speeds I would have crashed.

Upon arriving to his destination and attempting to park the vehicle, the vehicle failed to shift into reverse. The contact also stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle briefly took control of the steering and jerked into the next lane before he was able to regain control of the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 13,000.

While stopped at a stoplight, the assisted steering feature stopped working. It was incredibly difficult to steer my car safely off the street, and was fortunate to not end up in an accident. I took my car to Tesla to be serviced, and they told me that they couldn’t re-create it, and it was most likely a one time issue, disregarding that other Teslas have been recalled for a similar issue.

On Tuesday, May 16, I was driving on a city road at about 45mph when I began to hear metal noises coming from the front of my car. I slowed down and entered a shopping center driveway to inspect the noise. Upon pulling into the driveway of that center, I heard a metal snapping sound, my steering wheel jerked to the right, and grinding sounds started at the front axle of the car. I stopped immediately. Repeated random breaking when in cruise control or auto steer. It is available for inspection upon request. Car abruptly stopped on busy road at 60 miles per hour more than once. Slows on expressway repeatedly, which can potentially cause loss of control or being hit from behind. Vehicle has not been inspected for this issue. I was driving with my wife and two kids at around 8:30pm (it was dark outside already) on November 29, 2022. The street was pretty empty and it had 2 lanes in each direction. I was driving the left lane with the speed at about 40 mph and had the autopilot (the one that keeps lane, not FSD) turned on. When the car was approaching the intersection with the green light on, it suddenly decided to turn left (even though there was a dedicated left turning pocket on the left hand side). It looks like it was confused and after trying to change the direction it pointed the car right to the road sign. I started my car and drove out of the parking lot of my apartment complex. I was trying to drive to the grocery store. At that time, the car's auto-pilot and navigation features were not on. After turning onto the main road near my apartment complex, I turned on the car's auto-pilot feature. I did not turn on the navigation feature. But the car suddenly started navigating to my work address anyway. I wanted to keep driving straight on the main road, but the car immediately turned left to go into a side street that I was already passing. The car sped up when it turned, and I did not have enough time to change direction or to break. The car steered into a tree off of the main road. I attached photos to the claim form.

The turn signals do not work correctly with Teslas. You have to hit the switch multiple times in order to register your intent. For example, when I plan to turn left, I hit the turn signal switch, nothing happens. Then I try it again and it works. There are times it takes three switches in order to get the signal to register correctly. This is a known issue and complaints in forums that Tesla turn signal don’t register the first time. This is dangerous if I have to quickly switch lanes or exit and having to hit the turn signal switch multiple times in order for it to work. Very dangerous. This should work every single time, the first time.

Last evening , when doing a lane change on Highway 680 , I lost control of the car and the car began to swerve pretty badly. Thankfully I hit the brakes on time and everything was fine again. A blue car was trying to get in my lane and I quickly changed lanes to be safe and the severe swerving began. It was like I was in a roller coaster. The car was being driven on a low speed road (about 30mph) and suddenly the traction control, ABS, power steering, and all drivers assistance features (automatic vehicle hold, emergency braking, etc) all went out as well. The Tesla Model Y and I believe the Model 3 have a problem with phantom breaking. The problem occurs when we set the auto to cruise control on a two-lane highway. When we meet a large object (semi, garbage truck, propane truck) the car breaks and swerves to the right. This can create a very dangerous situation. The first couple of times this happened we almost lost control of the car. There is no warning before this happens. This problem can be easily replicated on cars without radar. It took us some time to determine what was causing the problem. We picked up our new Tesla Model last week and were not made aware of what would happen if we used cruise control on a two-lane road. We have since discovered that this is a known problem in the Tesla community and has been known for some time.

On January 19th, around 9:35-9:40am, while driving on Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon, the car jerked as if someone rear-ended it and then stopped abruptly in the middle of a busy road. The information screen displayed various error messages regarding battery and drive system. The stop was abrupt and we could have been seriously injured in busy traffic. This was a scary experience. The car had 260 miles range in the battery and no prior warnings/ messages indicating any problem. We called 911 and Tesla roadside assistance for help.
