Repeated random breaking when in cruise control or auto steer. It is available for inspection upon request. Car abruptly stopped on busy road at 60 miles per hour more than once. Slows on expressway repeatedly, which can potentially cause loss of control or being hit from behind. Vehicle has not been inspected for this issue. There have been no warnings of the problem prior to the failure. This problem has happened the entire time I’ve owned the car, especially, but not only, when driving on freeways.
On Saturday, 3/4/2023, I stopped at a supercharger lot to charge my car during a trip. As I entered the lot, I noticed that the road conditions were poor, almost like a gravel road. To be cautious, I drove slowly towards the three empty parking spaces in the middle of the lot, intending to park in the middle spot. I noticed that the road conditions were even worse in front of the parking spot, but it looked wide and not too deep, so I didn't think it warranted serious concern. I carefully maneuvered the car around to prepare for backing up. I've been using the HOLD braking mode, which allows for one-pedal driving, for more than five months. Just as I lifted my foot off the accelerator, the car jerked forward from a small pothole. I still expected the car to come to a stop, as my foot wasn't touching...
Same issue I've been reporting several months. This morning I downloaded yet another software update, got in my car, drove to Chick-fil-a on a Sunday because Tesla has not fixed this fatal braking bug on the highway for a non-existent round-a-bout so I use that for the car to navigate to. The car tries to get on the state road instead of the highway so I cancel and take over and drive onto the highway/expressway myself. After a couple miles the FSD finally takes over in a 70mph zone and reduces my speed to 45mph and stays at 45mph while passing several 70mph signs it clearly sees in its own 'Tesla vision' on the map in AR(Augmented reality). I cancel and speed back up to 70 before the next overpass where the car puts its hazards on, pulls into the slow lane, says it's executing a round-a-bout. Comes to a...
I have owned this car for about a year with ~10,000 miles of driving. Four times in the last year, during high way driving, I had sudden deceleration using adaptive cruise control of at least 20 mph at highway speeds. It seems to me that in each case I was to the left of a semitrailer truck and it appears to me that the imaging software believed the truck to my right was entering my lane. This is speculation as to cause but the circumstances are common. I regard the adaptive cruise control feature of Tesla’s Autipilot to be unsafe without extraordinary vigilance - which is not the purpose of cruise control. So I no longer use it. Tesla asserts there is no problem. This occurs during multiple versions of Tesla software.
This isn't another case of the Auto Pilot being engaged and the driver not paying attention. I was driving, in the rain, on a normal road surface, with both hands on the wheel. The car attempted to steer away and out of my lane when there wasn't an obstacle or any other hazard near me. My hand went from the 10 and 2 o'clock positions to the 11 and 3 o'clock position before it straightened back out. Because of this abrupt movement that the car made, the rear end of the car lost traction and spun around on me before the car came to a stop. Fortunately, no one else was hit during this accident. By looking at the Dashcam video, the car does show brakes were applied before spinning out of control but this wasn't by my input. I feel that the car made a descision for me that...
I was driving my Tesla Model Y on 02-26-2022 with my wife in the passenger seat. We were on our way to pick up our son and his two friends from the movie theater in Lincoln Square North, Bellevue Square, Washington. As we entered the Lincoln Square parking garage approximately around 6 30pm and turned into the narrow passage leading down to the several floors of parking lots at approximately 5 miles an hour, the Tesla on its own, and to my alarm and surprise suddenly picked up tremendous speed and went careening down the parking driveway and slammed to a stop into the concrete boundary of the Pillar on parking level P2. The distance travelled from start to finish was to the best of my very rough guesstimate 60ft to 70 ft. My repeated attempts at slamming the brakes did not stop the car. The airbags deployed. •With the...
The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds with the cruise control engaged, the vehicle experienced phantom braking, without warning. The contact attempted to reach out to the manufacturer but was unable to reach a representative. The vehicle was not yet diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was unknown. The contact stated that the manufacturer was contacted after each failure occurrence. Recall visits were scheduled but cancelled due to the issue being deemed "resolved" but that is not true.
I was driving on the freeway going 70 mph with adaptive cruise control enabled, and on two occasions the car braked quite strongly even though there were no cars in front of me. The first time it may have been because the freeway led into a curve, and the second time the car was headed into a tunnel.
The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while in Autonomous Self Driving mode and in manual driving mode with the Adaptive Cruise Control engaged with speeds set to 70 MPH or higher, the vehicle experienced phantom braking. There were no warning signs illuminated. The failure was self-corrected, but then recurred. The failure had occurred approximately 9 times. The contact had not taken the vehicle to the dealer. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had not been made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 10,977.
When we were driving on the highway at 75 mile speed with autopilot engaged, the car breaker suddenly from 75 to around 50 instantly. This happened twice in one hour. Fortunately, there were no vehicles behind us at that time.when complained to Tesla, they came back and said they did not see anything from their remote hardware diagnostics.
The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds with the Forward Collision Avoidance: Adaptive Cruise Control activated, the vehicle experienced phantom braking. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,500.
Tesla was in "full self-driving” (FSD) mode in a quiet residential area. Vehicle chose to make a left turn on a less than perfectly symmetric T junction. The car was on the thru street at the top of the T. Street had a middle yellow turning zone with yellow lines on the outer side and dotted ones inside. Camera was not filming at the time the crash began. but did start recording midway. Tesla may have other footage. In retrospect, while indicating it was intending to turn, I believe the car never entered the middle yellow zone, but instead proceeded directly to the middle of this unusually wide neighborhood intersection where no other vehicles were close by in any direction, although a few were approaching from a distance. It appeared safe to complete the turn, but instead the car feinted forward several times and hesitated to commit to the turn...
With auto-pilot engaged the Tesla came to an abrupt stop on an Interstate. Possibly this contributed to the Tesla being rear ended. There was another vehicle stopped ahead of the Tesla so stopping was the correct action but the Tesla auto-pilot braked abruptly. There was adequate distance between the Tesla and the car in front of it when it stopped.
At the end of my shift the "Full Self Driving" started working again, also without explanation. This time its driving me home, gets to the neighborhood I drive in and out of multiple times a day for the entirety of my "FSD Beta" and only address the car has "lived" at. This time it SLAMS on the brakes with someone behind me (scary) then quickly takes the wrong left turn, then another wrong left turn, then starts the ACCELERATE in a neighborhood/school zone directly towards a cul-de-sac with 2 story houses, speeds up more, then abandons all the "Full Self Driving" while I'm flying towards a power transformer box and curb when I SLAM the brakes (I gave her all she's got, she's heavy!) luckily I stopped with just a couple feet to spare. Then I drive back the direction it was supposed to go which also for the record...
Driving both east and west on 429 near the Wekiva river results in the car coming to a complete 0mph stop in a 70mph two lane highway with barriers on both sides and no signs or lights. Then the car starts changing lanes on the highway going about 15mph while cars are whipping past me at 70+mph with the horn on. The last 8 or 10 updates have not solved this issue I've been very alarmed and done everything in my power to avoid using the software and have demanded a refund many times, this is simply a deadly scam. The FSD contract is a license to kill and silence your attempts to alert the public like a good Samaritan; it must be shut down until proven safe. Each time they say they fixed it, each time I go out and risk my life and they lie, and lie and...
On multiple occastions my car has suddenly applied the brakes when using cruise control. The braking ranges from mild to severe. This hasn't resulted in an accident but there has been a close call when a car was following closely. I have brought this to Tesla's attention and there response was along the lines of there is nothing that can be done to fix it and it should get better over time. It has not got better.
We have experienced phantom braking at least once almost every time we drive on the interstate or on a two lane highway. For example, wen approaching a underpass with a concrete retaining wall or on a curve with a hill. In other instances, we do not understand why phantom braking occurred.
On 12/26 evening, I drove Model Y from Asheville NC to NJ. Around midnight time, the car was on I-81 in the middle lane at the speed of 70 miles/hour. And it was on Full Self Drive (FSD). There were virtually no traffic on I-81. On my right, there was a truck were merging to the lane on my right (not merging to the middle lane where Model Y was). Without any warning, Model Y suddenly reduced the speed to 25-30 miles / hour. I had to disengage FSD. If this happened during traffic hour, it could cause severe accident.
Rented the vehicle from Hertz for a holiday road trip of 3100 miles. Experienced multiple instances of "phantom braking" where the cruise control would slam on the brakes with nothing in front of the car within the range of vision. The car would rapidly slow from the posted speed limit to under 45 MPH and then about 5-10 seconds later resume as if nothing had happened. This problem happened to me several times per driving day, and seemed to be more prevalent when cresting a rise in the highway. A couple of time times, this happened with a car behind me, and the sudden braking could have caused the vehicle behind to rear-end the Tesla. In heavy traffic it is easy to see how this phantom braking could cause a chain reaction accident. At this point, I think that Tesla needs to permanently disable their cruise control in all Model...
Car did a hard braking while going 75mph on autopilot, no car or obstacle in front when it happened. The car following me had to do an emergency lane switch maneuver to avoid collision.
The contact owns a Tesla 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving at 65 MPH in the rain, the vehicle experienced phantom braking and stopped suddenly. The vehicle then veered to the right independently. The brake pedal was depressed but failed to respond. The contact lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle spun out and crashed into a wall on the side of the road. The air bags deployed. The contact sustained bruises and significant pain to the left leg. The contact also sustained soreness of her fingers, arms and shoulders. The contact did not seek medical assistance. The contact’s sister transported her to her residence. The contact was unsure whether a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot. The vehicle was then towed to a collision center. The contact was not using autopilot mode at the time the failure occurred. The manufacturer...
On Saturday night between 9:30 to 9:45 PM while driving on 495, Tesla Model Y 2022, Auto pilot was engaged at 70 miles per hour in three lane highway. My car was in middle lane with no vehicle in front in any of lanes. Suddenly without any warning, auto pilot was disengaged and car moved from 70 mph to 30 mph within few seconds shockingly. I was alert to pull accelerator in timely manner and avoided a possible rear-ended accident . It was scary moment with family onboard and luckily cars where behind enough to evade a possible disastrous accident. This must be fixed
While using cruise control the vehicle brakes hard when no obstacle is any where near the car in front or sides. Some times hard enough to engage abs and you can feel the car on the edge of losing traction/control. This has happened multiple times on multiple trips.
Sudden Phantom braking happened while driving north on garden state parkway. I was in the 2 lane express northbound highway, and there was heavy traffic and flashing police lights on the separated 3 lane local northbound highway. I was using adaptive cruise control when Tesla suddenly braked, reducing speed 20-30 mph in a matter of seconds, despite no cars in front of me. I took back control and disengaged cruise control
When using Autopilot on interstate, car did phantom braking when approaching new concrete sections of highway (I-4 between Orlando and Daytona Beach) on a primarily black asphalt highway during sunny afternoon conditions. This happened on a couple of occasions during drive.
Narrative November 18, 2022 At approximately 8:30 in the morning I was driving my new Tesla Model Y through the rolling hills of South Central Pennsylvania on I-70 heading to Breezewood in order to catch the Pennsylvania Turnpike West. Suddenly and without warning, the car began to break as hard as a car can brake without skidding. Almost like a full panic stop. The car must have stopped in four or five seconds from 60 miles an hour. I was in the left lane at the time and I tried to get over onto the shoulder but I was unable. The car came to a complete stop in the middle of the right lane. The car was in the center of the right lane and was completely locked up. I was unable to get it into neutral. I was unable to get it into a gear so I turned on...
I have Full Self Driving I paid $12,000 for and immediately wanted a return upon receiving the car it doesn't work as described. Tesla declined to refund me for the FSD software months ago. I have brought the car into service 3 times now and Tesla each time says there is nothing wrong with the car despite 5,000 gigabits of my own dashcam footage showing the car driving me into oncoming traffic, swerving towards concrete barriers, not seeing 5 people in a cross walk when turning at 25 mph, randomly SLAMMING on the breaks and much more. The touchscreen will freeze leaving the driver with no turn signals, no speedometer etc. I feel like the car is possessed trying to kill me, I am a full time Uber driver. Tesla service manager tells me with a straight face "just don't use it." "just don't make any left turns". The front...
I have been experiencing repeated episodes of phantom braking in which the vehicle will suddenly reduce speed, typically without any other vehicles in the vicinity. I routinely drive from Twin Falls to Boise, which is a distance of about 130 miles, and it regularly happens at least twice. In some instances the speed has dropped suddenly by 15 - 20 mph, which is very frightening, but in other cases the speed only drops by 3 - 4 mph. In all instances there is no reason for the braking. However, the other day it happened with a semi-truck behind me, creating a potentially dangerous situation. This has happened with both cruise control and autopilot. This has been happening since I first purchased the vehicle, which was two months ago. I have 5,000 miles on the vehicle.
Car was at freeway speed (~70mph) and on cruise control, and out of nowhere the brakes were applied by themselves very abruptly. I was almost rear ended on the freeway as a result.
Alert was coming randomly while driving the car about several safety systems being disabled automatically without any audible notifications. Alert clears up after the car is locked for several minutes. Below is the alert message.. Automatic emergency braking disabled Automatic Vehicle Hold disabled Traction control disabled Stability control disabled Cruise control disabled This makes the car suddenly unsafe to drive if you are not paying attention to the screen. I have been on the road driving car at 60-70MPH several times when this happened. This can turn in to an accident. I provided the information and created a service appointment at Tesla which took a month before they can get me a scheduled appointment. Tesla fixed the issue with below note after further review. "A loose connection in the area of the steering gear was causing severe communication problems between the stability controller and the autopilot computer." Resolution Date: 11/18/2022...
While driving down the highway, the Tesla slammed on the brakes automatically, with significant force, for no reason.
Automatic braking without obstructing vehicles or obstacles while using both the Traffic Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer functions. Occurs multiple times per drive and has occurred on multiple drives. Occurs without warning and places following drivers at risk. Renders these features unusable.
Phantom braking occurs in the Tesla Model Y when the vehicle’s TACC system is engaged. This is not auto drive, this is the systems Traffic Aware Cruise Control. Unexpected Braking occurs decreasing “cruise speed” approximately 8-11 miles per hour in a matter of seconds. On a trip from the Dallas TX area to the Colorado Springs area, this unexpected phantom braking occurred approximately 3 dozen times on open highway and in clear, sunny weather. This is a major safety concern as this brisk deceleration can cause the vehicle to be rear-ended by vehicles following the Tesla.
Phantom breaking on autopilot on highways
The AutoPilot or Full Self Driving malfunctions by suddenly braking for no apparent reason. Going from 70mph to 50mph on a busy highway can cause cars in the back to crash into my car. Along a two lane road the car suddenly started braking and veered right when a large 18 wheeler passed in the opposite lane. Causing cars behind to suddenly brake to avoid hitting my car. Another time car suddenly braked because there was a change in color where the road had been patched and there was a slight dip in the road. The problem has been confirmed by many other drivers and NHTSA is looking to the issue. I do not know what the Tesla Company is doing about this problem. There was no warning before the sudden braking happened.
I have been experiencing phantom braking on my Tesla Model Y. It is a new vehicle, which I purchased at the end of September 2022. While driving with cruise control activated, the emergency braking will suddenly engage bringing the car to a sudden slowdown/ stop. This has happened on multiple occasions.
Travelling 101 North from Los Angeles to Solvang. I was driving with tesla auto piloit set at 65mph. Middle of the highway, no vehicles around, no bridges or any shadows from anything. Tesla model y braked from 65mph to 20mph suddenly without warning. Serious safety issue, had a vehicle been following me i would have been rear ended.
Driving from L.A. to S.F. on I-5 yesterday, we twice experienced phantom braking while using Autopilot. In both cases, there was no car close in front of us. The system just malfunctioned and suddenly braked from maybe 70 to 55 or even 50, which feels very dangerous in case a car behind us might not notice and rear-end us. It was late afternoon and we were driving somewhat into the sun. It feels like it might have something to do with sun angle and the fact that there was no car in front of us. There were also some mirages on the road that it might have mistaken for a car.
I started my car and drove out of the parking lot of my apartment complex. I was trying to drive to the grocery store. At that time, the car's auto-pilot and navigation features were not on. After turning onto the main road near my apartment complex, I turned on the car's auto-pilot feature. I did not turn on the navigation feature. But the car suddenly started navigating to my work address anyway. I wanted to keep driving straight on the main road, but the car immediately turned left to go into a side street that I was already passing. The car sped up when it turned, and I did not have enough time to change direction or to break. The car steered into a tree off of the main road. I attached photos to the claim form.
When engaging cruise control on the highway we experienced phantom braking 2 times in 90 seconds while on an empty road. This was the first time we ever used the cruise control on the highway. The braking was aggressive, and enough to strain the passenger neck. It was scary and without warning. We feel it is too dangerous to use cruise control on our vehicle ever again for feet of causing an accident.
While adaptive cruise control, braking occurs unexpectedly. Might be related to hills, seems somewhat repeatable. Scares the snot out of you when you are doing 80 miles per hour on autopilot/cruise control and your car just stars braking.
I have a new 2022 Tesla Model Y and in less than 500 miles it has already "phantom emergency braked" on 5 separate occasions. The conditions was freeway driving, no traffic within 200-300 yards, daytime, and the geography was gentle rolling hills with little to no vegetation. On all occasions my speed was set at 75-80 mph. The events ranged from momentary autopilot brake application slowing the vehicle about 10 mph to very aggressive autopilot braking slowing the vehicle 30-40 mph. There are no other warning lamps, messages, or pre or post symptoms. Of course it goes without saying how dangerous this is especially if there were a vehicle following closely behind. Tesla is very aware of this problem. This particular vehicle, being brand new, has not had a service appointment to date but I am in the process of setting one up.
While driving on the interstate with the cruise control on the car suddenly applied the brakes. There were no other cars around and no objects on the roadway. This happened twice without warning on 10/09/2022. I have not reported this issue to Tesla yet but plan to.
Driving on the interstate going 85 in autopilot with no other cars around and the car slammed on the brakes. Nothing in the road.
The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 - 80 MPH with the Adaptive Cruise Control engaged, the Forward Collision Avoidance; Automatic Emergency Braking was activated with no traffic within a ¼ mile. There was no warning light illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted or notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 3,500.
The contact owns a 2022 Tesla Model Y. The contact stated while driving approximately 70-80 MPH with Adaptive Cruise Control activated, the vehicle experienced phantom braking while there were no vehicles or objects nearby. The contact stated that he depressed the accelerator pedal and was able to continue driving; however, the failure had been reoccurring more frequently. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 400.
I have a brand-new Tesla Model Y which was delivered to me on 8/29/2022. On 9/20/2022, between 08:20 and 09:20 AM PDT, I encountered at least 5 "unexpected slowdown" (or "phantom braking") events. It was on a section of I-15 between Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The weather condition was warm, clear, and sunny, and the freeway had almost no traffic around me. I had the "traffic-aware cruise control" enabled, and suddenly and without any warning, the car braked violently. If there were other cars around me, I was certain that rear-end accidents would have happened. Each time this happened, there was NO warning of any kind whatsoever. With each occurrence, I used the Tesla "Report" voice command to document such an event. According to Tesla, the event data were available to diagnostic team for analysis.
While driving on 1- 10 in Tucson headed East, at 6:15am, with no traffic visible coming or going and traveling at 75mph with cruise control engaged, the car slammed on the brakes without warning bringing the speed down to 30 mph. This also happened 3 to 4 times on 2 lane roads with no cars visible from horizon to horizon, vehicle speed was 65 mph, car for no reason initiated emergency braking down to 20mph. Obviously this is a severe hazard and potentially life threatening had there been vehicles or large trucks directly behind us. After these incidents my wife would not let me engage the cruise control and is thinking of selling the car.
Model Y slamming on break for no particular reason when hazardous lights are on. Luckily no car was behind me
