The vehicle is using excessive engine oil. I change the oil every 3,000 miles. I am currently adding about 5 quarts of oil between oil and filter changes. That's 10 quarts of oil every 3,000 miles. The vehicle has about 99,000 miles on it. It has been getting progressively worse the more miles it goes.

The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and decelerated to 25-30 MPH. The check engine warning light was illuminated, and the vehicle shuddered significantly. The contact veered to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the residence. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the cylinders #1 and #4 were misfiring. Additionally, the dealer stated that oil residue was found on the spark plugs, indicating that the engine was consuming an excessive amount of oil. The dealer diagnosed that the engine long block needed to be replaced. The dealer replaced the long block, the engine, and the cylinders. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 75,114.

It is an engine failure thru excessive oil usage. My oil light has never came on and Dealer nor KIA can tell what point does it suppose to come on. My vehicle has 90,000 miles and I put 6 quarts of oil between 4500 miles oil change. I just completed a oil consumption test in which it was down 2.5 quarts within 1000 miles. Then I had to pay $654 for a compression test. They say the test failed and the pistons are worn. Because they are worn, they say repair is not covered. I purchased a KIA Certified vehicle with an extended warranty and they say engine is not covered because the pistons are worn not broken. I say the pistons are worn because it may have been the lack of oil causing the extensive friction on the pistons. Is it mandatory for the car manufacturer to have an...

I was driving at approximately 35mph when my vehicle loss power and the steering wheel locked and gas pedal did not work almost causing me to be rear ended. I put my hazard lights on and started my vehicle back up and tried to continue driving but my vehicle delayed in acceleration and has now continued to delay ever since that incident. I have parked my vehicle and have not moved it due to the danger.

I'm the (third and current) owner of 2017 Kia Sorento LX which was working absolutely fine, with no issues or any warning lights on. On 1/14/23 (Saturday) while travelling with family on highway I-95 (in florida), the engine suddenly failed with smoke and oil spurting out from underneath. The engine service lights and audio warning kicked in. Despite the confusion and nervousness, I was able to safely maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder within seconds and escaped crash or fire. Immediately called my insurance and got the vehicle towed to the nearest Kia dealership. I had to drop the vehicle at the dealership (and drove home 700 miles to Virginia using one way rental). Few days later the dealership confirmed that the engine is not good anymore and it needs a replacement. They told me that since the recall (PI1802 ECU UPGRADE (KSDS)) was not performed on the vehicle, Kia...

Once I reached 70000 miles my car start to burn oil and I went to Kia north Brunswick because I used my service oil there they told me that was normal and we will do the test then I should change the oil once it was burning a lot before got empty and after I went kia bridge water New Jersey and we did same and this time after I change the oil and used 700 miles I found my oil is almost empty and my car still under warranty but they told me if I want to fix it I should change the engine from my pocket and as a note, I'm always doing my service in Kia dealer and I have been almost 10000 miles I change the oil like 8 times because this problem and no one knows what's the problem and no one help me, please...

MY KIA HAS AN ENGINE ISSUE THAT INVOLVES OIL CONSUPMTION. I GET THE OIL CHANGED EVERY 5,OOO MILES AND IN THE LAST 4 OIL CHANGES IT HAS BEEN BOTED THAT THERE WAS NO OIL OR ABOUT 1/2 A QUART IN THE OIL PAN WHEN DRAINING. THIS MEANS THAT MY KIA IN ESSENTIALY BURNING 5 QUARTS OF OIL EVERY 5,000 MILES, WHICH IN MY OPINION IS FAR MORE THAN JUST A WORN ENGINE. HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE IS NOT LEAKING ANY OIL, I CONFIRMED THIS BY PARKING IN BOTH MY GARAGE AND DRIVEWAY TO TEST FOR OIL LEAKS AND I HAVE LOOKED UNDER THE VEHICLE AND HAD THE PEOPLE DOING MY OIL CHANGE CHECK AND NONE OF US CAN FIND ANY EVIDENCE OF A LEAK. WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING THERE IN NO BLACK OR WHITE SMOKE SO I AM JUST NOT SURE WHERE THE OIL IS GOING. I HAVE CONTACTED THE...

Excessive motor oil consumption leading to a cylinder 2 misfire resulting in a new motor needing to be purchased. The car is less than 5 years old. I purchased the car in 2018 with 13,000 miles and preformed all regularly scheduled auto maintenance and all of KIA’s recalls and advised KIA on multiple occasions that there was excessive oil consumption. Driving down the highway the car began to shake uncontrollably and the check engine light illuminated. The car was pulled over at an auto zone where it was advised of the cylinder 2 misfire. The car was then towed immediately into the Greensboro KIA dearlership for formal diagnosis of the issue. At which point the dealership called and advised all tests were performed and this repair would require a new motor for a total of $11000.

My 2017 Kia Sorento check engine turn on so I took it to the dealer. The dealer told me that it was the sensors and that the warranty would cover it. A few days later they told me they needed to change the engine. They also said that they needed the oil changes receipts. I send the receipts that I had in the moment, but the warranty needed more receipts. The lady from the dealer told me to call KIA to see what else they need it to approve the warranty to replace the engine. Another lady from KIA told me they need it 11 receipts in total to approve the warranty. I send the rest of the receipts which makes 11 receipts and they still don't want to replace the engine. I call the lemon law to see if they could help me and they told me because I...

The 2.4 liter engine is using in excess of 4 quarts oil in less than 4000 miles. Kia corporation suggest to keep putting oil in engine until an internal failure. Then the engine will need replacing. The dealership willfully sold this under a Certified Pre-owned status. Which I think should be considered fraud. With Kia knowing they had the oil consumption issue prior to purchase. The vehicle was purchased Jan 23,2021 with 34,912 miles on it. It currently has 58921 miles on it. First began noticing the usage Dec 27 2022.

Engine seized after driving under 2000 miles after oil change from Kia dealership
#11499337 |
I bought my Sorento new in 2017 and had been taking it in to the dealership for regular maintenance. It started drinking oil a few months ago and an in-warranty oil consumption test was done. It's still using a lot of oil AND now it has a bad cylinder and needs a new $5,000 engine. It's out of warranty now and I'm disappointed that regular service appointments over the last five years didn't prevent this. It makes them seem pointless in retrospect.

Excessive oil consumption causing engine to misfire- needing spark plugs replaced with low mileage. Adding 2 quarts of oil about every 700 miles. With no solution given to correct issue.
#11497179 | Fire
The engine threw a rod through the block, it is available upon request. I had driven it to my destination earlier that day, it stayed parked until later in the evening as we were getting ready to go we checked the oil and headed on our way. After 10 min of driving on the highway there was a loud ugly clunk noise, lots of smoke coming from the car and the oil and check engine light turned on and shut off, the engine had no power. We started to pull over we began seeing flames coming from under the hood, the engine had caught on fire before we had completely pulled over and come to a stop. It can't be driven anywhere, we found pieces of piston/connecting rod that were broken and mangled in the engine and later found the hole underneath the car at the bottom of the block....

My 2017 Kia Sorento does not start all the time. I have had both the battery and starter tested and am told they are fine. This makes for a very UNRELIABLE mode of transportation. The car does not start sporadically and leaves me stranded at various times and places. I have been told by several repair places that they have no idea how to fix this... The car eventually starts after a few prayers but no mechanical adjustments are made. Please advise!! Thanks

I have two major concerns about my 2017 KIA Sorento (2.2L) OIL CONSUMPTION: The vehicle consumes up to 2-3 quarts of oil within 2-3 months. This is similar to other cases on this site: NHTSA ID Number: 11493012 NHTSA ID Number: 11491117 NHTSA ID Number: 11487580 NHTSA ID Number: 11486757 NHTSA ID Number: 11486544 NHTSA ID Number: 11484553 NHTSA ID Number: 11483621 NHTSA ID Number: 11482245 NHTSA ID Number: 11478518 NHTSA ID Number: 11478115 ENGINE KNOCK/VIBRATION: Now the engine knocks wildly when in idle, and I do not feel safe driving it, and it is the only vehicle I have access to transport my child to their job. My issues are similar to these reports: NHTSA ID Number: 11491104 NHTSA ID Number: 11477401 NHTSA ID Number: 11476366 NHTSA ID Number: 11473881 NHTSA ID Number: 11473534 I have reached out to the dealer, in reference to this, and they will not...

The engine has been consuming a lot of oil for some time. Kia did an oil consumption test 12/1/2020 and at that time was using 1.5qt per 1000 miles. They said was OK and acknowledged that a service bulletin was coming out in several weeks that would address the issue (See Receipt). That service bulletin was never issued from Kia. The oil consumption has increased to 330 miles per quart in September of 2022. Now the engine began to miss-fire on 10/27/2022 and consuming more than 200 miles per quart of oil. I believe the engine is now irreversibly damaged and they will not honor the warranty. The car is still within the warranty terms.

1.Engine is consuming 2-3 quarts of oil every 1,000 miles. Kia consumer services instructed me to pay for an oil diagnostic test- of 4 visits every 1,000 miles- cost of oil changes, engine flush, rental car for 2 days= $800 to date. 2. I am a therapist and travel Ohio for insurance purposes. My vehicle is a converted handicapped accessible vehicle as my significant other had multiple sclerosis, and the purpose of purchasing the car 4 years ago. 3. Yes, the service dept of a local dealer has confirmed the issue. They state that Kia refuses to do anything to resolve the issue of oil running out, engine seizing to work, driver will be killed driving when engine stops and is run into by semi-truck on highway. 4. No warnings. I literally ran out of oil 2 times before I knew it is a problem. The problem started in August...

My car has repeatedly completely run out of oil after going 2500 of 5000 miles and the oil leaked into different parts of the car. The car is not drivable and shakes and the engine rattles. None of the dashboard indicators illuminated to indicate an issue, until after the car shut off as I placed it in drive and was trying to accelerate, on 9/24/22. I have only owned the car since 10/2021. This car’s repairs should be covered under NHTSA Recall #20V750.

"Oil pressure light" appears while starting and driving vehicle, oil maintains in vehicle no drop in oil level. KIA dealership is aware of issue and has not informed consumers before purchase that a flush of the engine, is a "potential" fix for issue, KIA dealership is unsure that issue will be resolved, on low mileage vehicle.
#11489734 |
The car started leaking oil. Took the car in for inspection at local Kia dealership. The component that failed was the "oil pressure switch". This leak put my engine at risk of not working and fire. There was no warning lamp, engine oil was low. There is a NHTSA notice for this same issue sent out for Kia Sorento 3.3L GDI engines.

2017 kia Sorento has been burning oil like crazy. It is going through at least 3 quarts of oil every week to 2 weeks. The oil light does not come on to say it is low on oil, I have to continually check oil level manually to see if I need to add oil. Check engine light comes on and goes back out constantly. Biggest problem is there is no indication that the oil is getting low.

We were driving on a highway that was currently under construction. I had called my mechanic to get the vehicle in to get it plugged in to see why the service engine light came on that morning. While driving it, the vehicle stalled out on the now one lane highway. Stalled to the point of not being able to move or restart. There was no other sounds, smoke, anything! It. Just. Stopped. The semi behind us took out three construction barrels when he swerved to miss hitting the back of the vehicle! After seeing our lives flash before our eyes, we had to have some of the construction workers help us push it out of the way of any other traffic. It was towed to our mechanic who told us that there were metal shavings in oil and that intake and exhaust cams are two degrees off. They would not...

I have to refill my oil with 5 quarts every 2k miles like clockwork between periodic oil changes. Oil light comes on taking left turns and slowing down to a stop. Dealership said nothing about the issues associated with this car.

My engine is consume too much oil. On 2 occasions when taking car for oil change I was told no oil in my engine. I had to put 3 quarts of oil in between oil change around 900 miles. My engine light flickers on and off but last time no warning given. I am concerned that this may cause engine fire. Noticed the issue at approx 98000 miles. I drive on highway for 45 mins to go to work and afraid I will consume all the oil in my engine and cause an accident or cause a fire. I go through a tunnel and it cause a lot of anxiety knowing my car is consuming too much oil. I called Kia dealership and they told me I have to wait till November for car to get service. I am trying to avoid the run around since I am at 103000...

The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, his wife noticed an abnormal sound coming from the engine. Additionally, his wife also noticed that the vehicle was not accelerating as needed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the high-pressure fuel pump follower was replaced; however, immediately there was a knocking sound coming from the vehicle. The mechanic diagnosed the vehicle and stated that the knocking noise was coming from the engine and might be the rod bearing. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were contacted and stated that the vehicle was out of warranty and that the VIN was not under recall. The failure mileage was 70,000.

Vehicle has 64000 miles, I was driving at 70 mph on highway with no warning the engine cut out lost power, engine light was now on. Had it towed to Kia dealership was told engine failure is a problem with this vehicle as well as excessive burning oil and I had to pay $500 to have engine cleansed, told it would not fix the problem but engine cleanse was the recommended step. Told to drive car for 1000 miles bring it back to have oil checked then I am to drive it, not to check the oil or add oil and drive it until the engine goes out again then have it towed back to the dealership. Didn’t even make it to 1000 miles check engine light came on, now being told it is the intake manifold that needs replaced not covered under warranty and this will cost me $1000...

Engine was burning oil very quickly. We were filling it with oil between oil changes which we always got on schedule. With any problems or warning from check engine light it shut down in the middle of the highway. Our mechanic checked it and said the engine it locked. I’ve only had it for 10 months and it only has 106k miles.

On Friday September 2nd 2022, the oil light on my 2017 Kia Sorento came on for a brief moment then quickly went off. Once I arrived at my destination, I checked my oil & found there to be little to no oil in the vehicle. I had to add several quarts of oil to the vehicle to even get a reading on the dip stick. The vehicle has had regular oil changes & there has been no indication of an issue with the oil prior to this. Upon further inspection there is a large amount of carbon buildup on the tailpipe indicating the vehicle is burning oil. I have left several messages with the service center at the Kia dealership where the vehicle was purchased & all service was completed to advise of the issue/bring the vehicle in, but have received no call back to date. I have also reached...

Oil consumption is horrible, also there is never a warning light that tells you that the oil is low, you’ll just be driving and then the check engine light will come on and the car with start driving funny. It’s a dangerous situation because at any time your car could be out of oil and your engine could blow cause if harm or death to everyone in the vehicle and could possibly cause an accident.

The KIA turned off while driving in traffic going to Louisiana. It just turned off while I was slowing down. The vehicle turned back on a few minutes later and continued to Louisiana. The steering wheel locked up while in Baton Rouge, LA and the red warning light came on after that. There were no warning lights prior to the vehicle turning off while driving nor when the power steering locked up. I took it to O’Reilly’s Auto Parts to have them put some power steering fluid in it. They could not do it because apparently it has an electric power steering system. The car would not start after that. All the warning lights came on. The rep at O'Reilly's said that since it is electrical, I would need to take it to the dealership because I should not be having these issues since I only had the vehicle for...

On June 15th, before our 2017 Sorento was due for an oil change, it completely ran out of oil and we were stranded on the side of the road. Our mechanic completely changed and filled the oil. I reached out to Kia Corporate twice, but they were of no assistance. Yesterday, on August 6th, the car was again low on oil. We have an appointment with Kia on Wednesday, August 10th to attempt to address this issue.

This engine in the vehicle has had excessive oil consumption between oil changes. It uses 3 quarts of oil between oil changes at every 3000 miles. Why even do an oil change if I’m putting 3 quarts in it every 3000 miles I could just swap filters and be done with it.

The component that failed is the engine and yes it is available for inspection and has already been inspected by Geico insurance. The vehicle started losing power on a major highway and four adult lives were at risk when this occurred. We took an exit as the car was failing and it stopped completely in traffic on the exit ramp. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by Matthews Kia. Yes, the vehicle has been inspected by Geico insurance. Yes, the vehicle suddenly began to shake, and made very loud noises, we then rapidly lost power and the car stopped dead in the middle of traffic.
