The car is a 2017 Kia Sorento with approximately 73,000 miles. We have always had the oil changed at the Kia dealership. A month after the last time I had it changed (1/2025) we were going on a trip so my dad checked the oil. There was no oil in it. Since then we have been having to put oil in it about once a month or so because it runs out. It is not leaking anywhere and no oil light comes on when it does run out. The oil is disappearing. The oil is burning internally. I am having difficulties with the dealership in addressing the oil consumption issue, even when it's a known problem. This last time I spoke with Robert at Kia Ramada in Shelby NC. They want me to pay for them to look at it and then said they would write up a report to...
In April 2025 the check engine light came on. The engine had been replaced in February 2025 so I immediately took the vehicle to Safford Kia Dealership in Fredericksburg, VA. (NOTE: The engine was replaced at Jacksonville Kia, Jacksonville, NC as the issue with the engine happened while I was away working at that location.) A few days after dropping the vehicle off I was notified by the service writer there that the catalytic converter had gone bad which was a common issue after problems with the engine. Specifically, I was told the engine dumps oil into the catalytic converter therefore ruining it. The new engine has been driven about a 1000 miles (give or take) as the vehicle was picked up from the dealership in Jacksonville, NC and driven to Fredericksburg, VA on 1 March 2025 with minimal normal driving before the check engine light came on.
Engine blew at 175000. It is not one of the vehicles that is covered under the class action lawsuit but the vehicle itself just blew an engine after an oil change. One of the Pistons let go.
This is the third time I’m having to take my SUV to the Kia dealership because my check engine light begins flashing and then my car has a hard time accelerating when it gets to certain speeds. It shakes but will not go over 68 mph although it is covered under a warranty, it is very frustrating. Having to keep take my car to get fixed. There should be a more permanent solution.
Engine failed, leaving me stranded at a stop light. I was finally able to get it started, but it ran terribly and didn't have the power to go uphill, almost rolled back into the vehicles behind me. Had to have it towed. No warning whatsoever, engine stalled and engine light on. I got it fixed at dealership I purchased from, then it did the same thing a week later. I will NEVER purchase a KIA again. Almost every shop I inquire about service won't even service KIA engines anymore because of the problems. I'm left with a car payment and no vehicle.
Severe oil spill from engine and is spilling out into the car tires and the side doors and comes through the muffler and my back window and it’s stalling my car and I have been left stranded on the side of the road and I had it diagnosed at the dealership I bought it and I need my car fixed due to faulty issues of the vehicle not my fault please and thank you
1.Component/System Failure: The issue involves a recurring failure of the oil pressure switch, which is part of the engine’s lubrication monitoring system. This malfunction has resulted in an oil leak that subsequently damaged a major wiring control harness and the associated control module. The affected components are available for inspection by an authorized service center. 2.Safety Risk: The oil leak poses a safety risk by potentially compromising the vehicle’s engine performance and electrical system integrity. While there has been no direct incident of injury, the malfunction increases the risk of unexpected vehicle failure, which could endanger the driver and others on the road. 3.Confirmation of the Problem: The recurring issue was initially diagnosed by an authorized dealer. After the first repair under warranty, the same problem reappeared, and an independent service center later confirmed that the oil pressure switch was leaking excessively. This repeated diagnosis supports the conclusion that the...
[XXX] the engine on my 2017 Kia Sorento seized up due to severe oil leak. There was a recall earlier in the year for oil pressure gauge which I had replaced. This seems to be a common problem in Kias as there is the class action law suit for this very problem however my car does not qualify but after reading many forums this is still a common problem in Kias that are not covered in this class action. I am now left with an inoperable car and nothing to show for it. I have been in touch with Kia Corporate with no help, lawyer, Office of Attorney General and MyCarVoice.com. Hoping you all can add some advice or answers. Thank you. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Car went into limp mode and check engine light began blinking. We do not have a Kia dealer in our town so we had it towed to local mechanic. He did not save the code but said it indicated one of two options: change the oil or replace engine. He changed the oil and cleared the code. The car had been using oil for some time so we called Kia to report it. We were told to let it run out of oil until it goes into limp mode again and then tow it to the dealer. We can’t do that! We live on a mountain. If the engine locked up, we could die. So, we add a quart to a quart and a half every couple of weeks. The car smells hot so we know the engine is bad. It is one of the GDI engines. There was a...
Engine failure, loss of power on multilane highway, engine valves failed. unable to move to safe location Dealer checked valves failed No warning lamps, messages prior to failure
Urgent Assistance Needed: Engine Issue and Warranty Dispute Since September last year, the engine warning light has been consistently on. Whenever I took the car to the Kia dealership, they merely mentioned that the system was “too rich” and assured me it was not a concern. Instead of addressing the engine issue, they recommended replacing unrelated parts such as the air filter. When I took the vehicle to a local mechanic, I was informed that the engine was not in good condition, causing the oil to burn quickly, which indicated an engine problem. However, the Kia dealership did not acknowledge this issue. On February 7th, while driving, the vehicle began shaking violently and making unusual noises. I immediately brought it to the local mechanic, who diagnosed that the #4 cylinder valve was burnt. The following day, on February 8th, I brought the car to the dealership. They mentioned that the...
Engine problem. I've had to replace spark plugs and have to add oil almost every week. This was done about 3 months ago. Today check engine light came back on and it's the same problem stalling and shaking as if it's going to dye in me .. I bought my car brand new I've been the only owner..it's only got 80,000 miles .. I know that you guys have life time warranty on your engines .what do I need to do to have it repaired under warranty?
While on vacation the oil light came on (just had it in for maintenance, told them it was using oil but no sign of leak, they told me it was fine to go on vacation, that there was no problem) we put oil in but then engine light came on. It was Saturday night and warranty co. had no emergency phone number. Got to Hotel, Monday was towed to Repair Shop was told after they inspected the car that we had to replace the engine. Warranty Co. replaced the engine a MONTH later with a used engine. My car was not on the recall and should of been. KIA did not answer any calls or emails. Also I am still paying for it. I had a lo of problems with the warranty co, luckily I kept up with the maintenance on it, because if I did not they would never...
My vehicle started leaking oil from the engine from an unknown location. I took it to the dealership for them to diagnose the cause of the leak which is under warranty. The dealer refused and did not honor the warranty. Now my car is immobile
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle failed to restart. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure. The contact stated that engine oil was covering the engine compartment. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 110,000. The VIN was not available.
While driving the check engine light came on. I could feel the vehicle losing power despite giving it gas & seeing the rpm's rise. While looking at the dash board to see if there any other indicators the check engine light started flashing followed up by the oil light and another light (can't remember what it was). I pulled off the highway and the vehicle was shaking while running before cutting out. It would not restart and I had it towed to the dealership. The dealership attempted to diagnos however all they can tell me is cylinders 1 & 3 will not hold compression, the engine needs to be replaced & despite only having 82K miles it's not covered by Kia. The vehicle has been meticulously maintained at the dealership.
Vehicle up to date on oil changes. Driving down interstate and vehicle just stopped without warning. Message to contact a dealer popped up. When diagnostic put on vehicle shows camshaft and crankshaft bad. No oil on dipstick AT ALL. Oil light never came on showing low. Never seen oil in garage so no leaks. Sensors showing misfire were changed along with spark plugs and coil packs. Codes never cleared. Car is not drivable but has been well maintained and up to date on everything. After researching I have seen multiple pages and pages of the same exact complaint on same exact vehicle. There is a recall for certain 2017 kia Sorento 3.3L V6 engines but shows mine is not affected although my vehicle is the exact same as the recall and having exact same issue as the recall. I would like this looked into and a explanation for the engine...
like many other kia owners I have a Kia Sorrento and after 6700 miles started running into problems with oil consumption. I have Toyota extended warranty because I am second owner and wanted some type of coverage. Kia knows there are problems and giving customers run around plus higher insurance premiums. second time over 5 days my car is being evaluated I have done 3 oil changes since March 2024 I did get engine oil switch fixed did own oil consumption test which Toyota did not except because it was not Toyota or kia dealer that did it. I would sue them on my own or geta new car if i could afford it. I love the car for size and smoothness of ride but they are failing their customers.
Coolant system not functioning properly replace thermostat and worked a day then back to overheating. Engine overheating with new oil and filter also shakes badly Car does not shut of when ignition is pressed the first time have start the car then shut it off again
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving at approximately 60 MPH, the vehicle stalled and failed to return to normal operation. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact researched and was made aware of NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V586000 (Engine and Engine Cooling); however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 104,100.
Engine Oil Burning 2-4 quarts of oil in less 1000 miles.
I have noticed that there is some il leavking from the car. My independent mechanic was sevivign the vehicle and has informed me that the head gasket has a leak and that this is a common problem with Kia Sorento 3.3 from 2017. I have taken to a kia dealer and they onfromed that there was only a leak from the oil pan which is not possible as i have seen the leak coming from higher up the engine. I have informed Kia USA and they have deferred to the warranty that i purchased. The small print thati was not made aware of was such that buying the vehcile used the manufacturere was only liable for the first 65,000 miles. I purchase an extended warranty and power train and engine were not covered. As such I am lookign at some point to a failing engine or a bill for 3...
I was driving down the road and my car shut off. It would not restart at all. I just had my state inspection and a new oil change on November 11. There was no light on the dash at all. They had to tow it to kia where it has been since the 25th.
I have been having excessive oil burning for months. When I took it to the Kia dealer, this was a known issue. They told me I'd need to continue to regularly top off my oil (way over the recommended amount) or risk my engine blowing. Just over the warranty at 102,114 miles the car seized. The repair shop diagnosed it as a valve/cylinder head issue, but the engine has not been working as it should since long before before the 100,000 warranty mark. It is documented at my Kia service center. My car is useless, not even drivable now. This is a known issue (the burning of oil) and Kia isn't upfront about this issue. While there was a class action lawsuit for other engine issues in this model, there is no accountability for the issues we face. My car is worthless and at only 102k miles. I've taken great...
Driving down the interstate to pick my children up from school and all of a sudden the car made a weird bubbly grinding sound and stopped accelerating. I had to pull off and park as the car would not go any further. My vehicle has had regular maintenance and oil changes since I purchased it. I had in fact just put a full quart of oil in it. The first mechanic stated that there was metal shards in the oil. In between oil changes, I have to add several quarts of oil because it seems to just disappear. There’s no oil leak yet the oil would be almost completely gone not even a full month after a complete oil change. My car has currently been sitting at the Kia dealership for a lot now waiting for repair. I paid for the extended warranty yet. Kia is dragging their feet and...
While driving my vehicle going up a hill, I all of a sudden had a loss of power and heard a bunch of noise. I had to pull over as well as possible while people were speeding past because the noise turned out to be a piston rod blew apart causing catastrophic engine failure
Heard light knocking coming from engine compartment while on a trip. The knocking become louder while driving home on County Roads. Knocking was very loud when I reached a populated area. While attempting to get to an auto store the vehicle drove very slowly and then a huge plume of black smoke discharged from the rear and front of the vehicle. The car stopped on an entrance ramp and would not start again. I had the vehicle tow on a flat bed tow truck to a vehicle repair shop in our hometown. This was on a Tuesday after normal business hours. The following morning I took the key to the shop and explained what happened. The shop called me later the same day and told me the engine was blown and not salvageable that there was a hole in the engine. I am in the process of looking for a...
My vehicle has a 2.4l GDI engine that is excessively burning oil. I burn 2 qts every 1000 miles. I took it to the Kia dealership since I’m still under warranty and they refused to do an oil consumption test. They want 3k miles worth of readings and it will put me over the 100k warranty. I was instructed to keep putting oil in my car and eventually the engine will die. When I asked they told me it will lose power when I’m driving. I’ve done a lot of research and I don’t understand how a vehicle that may stall out on a highway, and potentially cause a car crash, is safe. I am shocked and appalled. The oil consumption has rapidly increased and it’s not safe to be driving with these engines.
On February 13th, while driving from a restaurant to our residence with our children, the vehicle experienced a complete shutdown, accompanied by an engine failure alert. This incident posed a significant safety risk to both myself and my children, necessitating that we push the vehicle to a safe location. Subsequently, the vehicle was towed to a KIA dealership for diagnostic evaluation. It was determined that KIA had previously misdiagnosed the issues with the KIA Sorento, and it was confirmed that the engine required replacement, after several tests. Prior to this incident, the engine exhibited symptoms of excessive oil consumption and irregular jerking. Despite multiple visits to the KIA service center, we consistently received inaccurate diagnoses. Most recently, the vehicle ceased operation once again, and I have been informed that the engine wiring harness is compromised. However, KIA has declined to acknowledge responsibility for this issue. KIA has been the subject...
While driving on the interstate i starting hearing a rattling/slapping like noise that I originally thought was outside my car. It was a soft sound but there wasn't any change in performance and no lights came on. I was in the middle of no where so I drive the additional 20 miles and pulled off into town. The sound seemed louder but still no lights appeared on the dash but as I accelerated from a stop light to pull off and see what may be going on, my car engine died, immediately lost power steering and brakes were difficult to push, the battery light came on then the check engine light and oil light came on at the same time. I was able to pull into a parking lot by coasting in and had my car towed. All illumination lights worked outside and in and the tow truck driver tested...
Excessive oil consumption, and I can’t believe this is not a recall because this is a known problem with Kia and Kia knows this!!! My oil light came on when I literally had no oil in my vehicle, took it to the Kia dealer and i basically got the run around because they want you to jump through hoops to figure out what’s wrong with it even though they really know what’s wrong !!! They have a bunch of Kia’s out back waiting for new engines when I was there, I have no warranty on my vehicle except for the extended warranty because I bought out right, it came as is no warranty, I’m on disability so I barely drive it now because of the oil consumption and don’t know what to do or go about this, it has 71,000 miles on it, I’ve read thousands of stories online about...
I was driving down an interstate when my check engine light came on and began to flash. The car then began to shake violently. I was able to pull it into a parking lot successfully. There was a smell & it felt hot. During my routine oil changes, the shop had notified me a couple of times that I had low oil. No low oil lights or any other warnings ever came on my dashboard to say I was having issues until that day. I had it towed to a local dealership on 09/29/2024z Local Kia dealership confirmed on 10/04/2024 that the whole engine needs replaced.
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was restarted; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.
Vehicle over heated on vacation trip. Had mechanic check out vehicle to get it moving again. They removed the thermostat in hopes of a stuck thermostat. Once we arrived at our vacation house I set up appointment with KIA dealership to have them make repairs. I informed them that the thermostat was removed. They came back with it having a blown head gasket and it needed engine replaced. It took them 3 weeks to replace engine by that time we had to rent a vehicle and go back home. I had to pay over 1000 out of pocket for the temp repair, rental, and to have the vehicle shipped back to my home. Finally got the vehicle back and the check engine light was on and it was running rough. It would not reach operating temp. I knew that they must have not put a thermostat on with the new...
This 2017 Kia Sorento is using an excessive amount of motor oil and looking online regarding this issue, there have been many complaints about this. The vehicle has just over 61K miles. The engine light came on (9/10/2024) and we pulled over. Unsure of what to look for, I checked the oil level and there was barely any oil on the dip-stick. The oil was changed this past May (2024) and should not be using this much to where its not registering. There doesn't seem to be any recalls for this but only complaints from other owners and not much help from KIA Corp. I'm not sure if there's any recourse here.
Car was burning oil rapidly. While driving heard loud noises, shaking, smoke started coming through vents and car turned off. Kia is stating that there are many recalls on vehicle, but the only recall I received is for a tow hitch. I don't have a tow hitch. Very dangerous if I was going somewhere with a higher speed limit. Kia dealership is saying corporation won't offer extended warranty due to recalls not being completed. Again the only recall is for a tow hitch. Kia dealership has quoted me over $10000 to fix a vehicle that is suffering from known manufacturer failures.
On August 26, 2024, my Kia Sorento failed to start. While driving it, the vehicle started to make a noise so we pulled off the road and shut it off. When we tried to restart it, it made only clicking noises but would not start. There were no warning lights indicating any issues; no oil light, no check engine light, nothing. It ran fine the day before, the last oil change was May 1st and the vehicle was running fine. When the vehicle arrived at my house we checked the oil, and there was barely any oil in the car - we put oil in it and tried to restart it, but it failed to start - only clicking noises. I recently put a brand new battery in it. If the indicator warning light would have been working as it should have been, I would have known the oil was...
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact heard a loud knocking sound coming from the engine. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 111,000.
Car turned off when making a full and complete stop. Would burn oil faster than usual. Car does not stay on.
Cylinder #1 exhaust valve burnt
We were driving on the highway and the engine started to shudder and the check engine light came on. We pulled off and had the car towed to a Kia dealership. Their report indicated that cylinder #3 had a burnt valve caused by excessive heat and there was scoring on the cylinder wall. They deemed it a total engine failure and quoted us a new engine for $9800!!!
The contact owns a 2017 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, an audible message indicated that there was engine failure, and the infotainment screen displayed the option to send an engine failure report. The vehicle then shuddered and made an abnormal sound. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, but the abnormal sound persisted. The vehicle was shaking, and the contact detected an abnormal odor inside the vehicle. The contact parked and turned off the vehicle. Additionally, the headlights failed to illuminate while driving at night. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed with multiple cylinders misfire. The dealer determined that the spark plugs and headlights needed to be replaced, as well as an induction cleaning and oil change. The dealer replaced the spark plugs and headlights but discovered that the fuel pump was leaking fuel into the engine. The...
Bought car from Bill bird kia in panama city Florida with 38k miles and at 41k miles we went for oil change the oil was extremely low and from that day we have kept record of every oil change 1k miles into every oil change the oil is gone and was told kia won't reach engine until the engine blows up so with 115k miles on it kia diagnosed our engine with cylinder #1 low compression due to lack of oil and it was not time for a oil change.. kia has refused to replace the engine. So I have had to spend 4950.00 on a remanufactured engine plus paying 2000.00 for labor
My Kia has been burning oil for about a year. My local Kia dealership was unable to verify if I had a warranty since I didn’t purchase it from them. I had to start going to Jiffy Lube for my oil changes since they offer free top off service because I was spending $15 every week to add oil to my engine. Currently, my engine light is constantly illuminating even with oil, change, maintenance and top offs.
The component That failed. Was the engine the engine blew at 120ish thousand miles. The problem has been taken to a dealer as well as an independent service station. Both confirmed that the engine blew because one of the Pistons exploded. Both confirmed that there is no reason for this. Other than it seems the oil thing did not ever tell anyone that the oil was running. There was no warning. No systems that came up nothing. We were driving and it lost power. I have spoken to Kia. I have spoken to the dealership I bought it from. Both have confirmed that Kia is known to have these issues with their engine but they are not doing a recall because it would be too expensive. When I spoke to Kia they told me that because my Kia specifically wasn't in the engine recall, I was out of luck. I...
Engine seized
No oil with no idication and no warning light. Extremely rough idling stalling possible complete engine failure.
I have owned this KIA for 2 years and put 7000 miles on it. It has excessive oil consumption, currently using 1.5qt of oil every 200 miles. I have had 2 engine flushes and switched to Mobil 1 synthetic oil. KIA dealerships as well as KIA CORP have told me they will do nothing until the engine seizes and then it may or may not be repaired. I am the parent of 5 adopted special needs medically fragile children who should this vehicle seize and catch fire would perish in a burning vehicle. The dealership has told me to "drive it like I stole it and let it blow" I tried to trade out of vehicle and the dealerships call it a "COVID CAR" when the could charge excessive prices for used cars. I owe $21k on the vehicle. Owned 2 years and put 7000 miles on it and they...
Engine Knocking, all spark plugs cracked, burning excessive oil. Very dangerous for myself, passengers, and all on the road. In Feb 2023 was on NY interstate when vehicle shacked violently and I started losing control. Luckly, I was able to bring the vehicle safely to the side of the road and wait for it to be towed to Kia dealership. This problem was confirmed and reproduced by the Kia Kingston NY dealership. They just said it was the spark plugs and everything was ok. It was inspected by dealership. They said no major engine issues, but the car keeps getting worse. Now it's having an engine failure code of values misfiring. It's nowhere to be safe to drive now. No warning lights when engine knocking happend and lost control of vehicle in Feb 2023. Oil light turned on due to excessive burn just a few days after an oil change....
Driving down interstate with cruise control at 75 mph. Car suddenly started decelerating, causing a hazard attempting to get to the shoulder.
