My wife and I were driving to the dealer to have a safety recall service performed on her Jeep Wrangler 4XE. We had just merged onto the highway, I was in my car, behind my wife in her Jeep. Less than a mile onto the highway, my wife suddenly slowed down and moved to the right lane. As she moved over to the right lane, I saw her front tire violently wobbling back and forth. We slowed down to 30mph on the highway and after approximately 30 seconds the problem seemed to resolve. We limped our way to the exit (about another mile) and to the dealer about 1/4 mile off the highway. When my wife got out of the car she was still shaking, rattled by what had just happened. When we described what happened to the service center they responded "oh, you had the death wobble." After some...
I am filing this complaint regarding the serious safety hazard associated with the fire-risk recall on my 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe. The official manufacturer recall letter states: “The high-voltage battery may become damaged under normal operation which could lead to a vehicle fire.” The recall instructions also direct me to: Fully discharge the high-voltage battery Not charge the vehicle Park the vehicle away from all structures because of the fire risk This indicates that the vehicle may spontaneously catch fire even when driven or stored as intended. I currently cannot safely store or use this vehicle at my residence. I am a 100% permanently and totally disabled Marine Corps veteran with PTSD, and this fire hazard and the required parking instructions significantly worsen my medical condition. There is no available remedy or repair at this time. I am requesting that NHTSA document this hazard, investigate Stellantis’ handling of this recall,...
While driving at highway speeds 40 and over vehicle may begin to experience “death wobble” where deceleration and sudden stopping is required. It becomes very hard to control vehicle and loss of control may be possible. Vehicle violently shakes from front end after minor bump or skip in roadway. Although reporting for first time now has happened several times since I have owned the vehicle.
Vehicle: 2023 Jeep Wrangler Sahara Mileage: Approx. 67,000 Case Number with Jeep/Stellantis: 94808242 I am reporting a recurring and dangerous “death wobble” safety defect in my 2023 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. I have experienced more than 30 separate incidents of violent front-end shaking while driving, often at highway speeds. The wobble happens suddenly without warning and causes the vehicle to become difficult to control, creating a serious risk of losing control, swerving into other lanes, or causing a crash. I have three children who regularly ride in this vehicle, and these episodes have occurred while they were present. The problem has occurred under multiple road and weather conditions. I have attempted repairs including new tires and new shocks, and the issue still persists. The vehicle has been evaluated by Jeep dealership service departments and the problem has not been resolved. I have documented each event with video recordings and logs including...
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? My 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe (VIN [XXX] ) has experienced repeated failures in the high-voltage hybrid electrical system, including “Service Hybrid System” warnings, failure to hold charge, and loss of EV function. It has also experienced a dangerous front steering damper failure at highway speed. All components remain available for inspection upon request, and the vehicle is still in my possession. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The hybrid system failures have caused repeated drivability issues, unpredictable power delivery, and warnings advising me not to operate or charge the vehicle due to potential battery-related safety risks. More critically, the steering damper failed abruptly at approximately 75 mph, causing severe front-end instability, vibration, and momentary difficulty maintaining directional control. This failure created an immediate risk of a loss-of-control crash...
Dear NHTSA, I am writing to formally report a serious safety issue involving my 2023 Jeep Wrangler. Recently, I experienced what is widely known as the “death wobble,” a violent and uncontrollable shaking of the steering wheel and front end while driving. This incident nearly caused me to lose control of the vehicle and crash, creating an extremely dangerous situation for myself and others on the road. The “death wobble” is caused by defective or worn suspension and steering components, including track bar bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, and other parts. The experience was terrifying, and I had to carefully slow down and pull over to regain control of the vehicle. I am aware that a nationwide class-action lawsuit settlement was approved in June 2023 for Jeep Wrangler models (2018–2020) and Jeep Gladiator models (2020) for this exact issue. The settlement provided extended warranties, potential coverage for suspension components,...
The contact owns a 2023 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH over a bump in the roadway, the front-end of the vehicle started shaking violently. The contact stated that after slowing down to 20 MPH, the shaking ceased. The failure had occurred on three separate occasions. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact related the failure to the death wobble. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the local dealer for assistance. The contact called the local dealer and scheduled an appointment. The vehicle was not yet diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to a design flaw. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000. The VIN was not available.
STATEMENT OF FACTS 1.I am the registered owner of a 2023 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (VIN: [XXX]), purchased for approximately $75,000 USD, inclusive of all taxes and registration, in cash. 2.I have been driving different cars for over 25 years and have owned multiple vehicles. This Jeep Wrangler is the most expensive vehicle I have ever owned, and the only one to cause severe safety issues for me and my family. 3.I primarily drive this vehicle on weekends with my two young children (ages [XXX] and [XXX]) seated in the rear seats. The persistent and unresolved mechanical issues with this vehicle have directly jeopardized our physical safety and my livelihood( I couldn’t go to work during many weeks) 4.There are new problems related to manufacturing defects that keep poping up every month since last 6 months while the car is only used for 25k and under basic warranty (Example on top...
We have been experiencing a bouncing and shaking in the front end of our vehicle while driving at highway speeds. This happens when hitting the slightest bump or transitions from pavement to concrete. Last week while driving on the highway the shaking and bouncing was so violent that I can't believe I didn't lose control. I brought the vehicle to the dealer and for the second time they replaced more suspension items in the front end. After doing some research I found out that this has been a problem with these vehicles for quite some time and that it's known as the "Death Wobble". After what I experienced I can understand why. I called Jeep and spoke to multiple people in different departments and as they acknowledge the problem they don't seem to care how unsafe the issue is. I can't believe there haven't been any deaths related to this...
At highway speeds,60+ the jeep starts an extreme wobbling and shaking when I hit a bump. Sometimes I can slow down and it stops and other times I have to pull Over and come to a complete stop. I just bought this jeep less than two weeks ago and it’s now in service getting a new steering damper. Everything I’m reading online says this is just a Bandaid. My husband knows about Cars and he said this will only absorb the shaking until it wears out and then it will start again. I was told it was their third jeep today with a death wobble. They sold the jeep to me with this issue and now I have to pay a warranty deductible 10 days after purchase to get it fixed. It only has 33,000 miles on it. It’s hard to control the steering at 70 mph when the entire...
The vehicle violently shakes after hitting minor bumps on the road. The steering wheel shakes not allowing you to have control of the vehicle. The vehicle can hit another vehicle or roll over due to this defect. This is a serious issue linked to poor quality parts and craftsmanship from the manufacturer. This can cause serious injury or death if not fixed immediately. This also causes the alignment to go out and pre-mature wear and tear on the tires. Mark my words someone will die from this failure.
At 40 mph and above and without warning, the front end of the vehicle will begin to bounce and shake from side to side causing the steering wheel to also shake, thus making it difficult for the driver to safely steer the vehicle. Once speed is reduced the shaking stops and normal control is regained. This issue has occurred multiple times and lasts anywhere from a few seconds to over a minute.
When driving on the freeway. Car starts to wobble and the whole car starts to shake. The steering wheel trembles as well. Every time I hit a bump it starts to wobble more.. everyday it keeps getting worse as I drive it.
The contact owns a 2023 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving at highway speeds, the vehicle started shaking violently and the vehicle was difficult to steer. The contact was able to bring the vehicle to a stop. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and the contact was informed that the vehicle had experienced the death wobble. The dealer removed the steering damper and completed the purge process and checked the torque of the lug nuts, and the tire pressure. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to another local dealer, Coastal Jeep Ram of Quincy (1724 W Jefferson St, Quincy, FL 32351); where it was diagnosed with the death wobble and found the star online publication case [XXX] for shimmy in front and confirmed that the failure was due to the steering damper and star...
On October 27th, my Jeep started shaking violently as I was driving on the highway. I brought the Jeep to the dealership, they test drove it, and the mechanic did not experience the shaking so I was told “that’s just what Jeeps do”. I then researched Jeep shaking and found the Death Wobble is a common problem among Jeeps and there are several ways to fix it. I took my Jeep back to the dealership, they once again test drove it and could not replicate the wobble. They said I could leave it there and they could continue to drive it daily to find the problem, as they cannot fix it if the mechanic cannot experience the wobble. I don’t have another vehicle to drive and cannot leave my vehicle there indefinitely. They did an alignment, and sent me on my way. The jeep continues to violently wobble, today forcing...
The contact owns a 2023 Jeep Wrangler. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V720000 (Electrical System); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Additionally, the contact stated while driving at approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle ran over a rough patch on the highway and the front end started wobbling. The contact depressed the brake pedal to slow down, and the wobbling lessened. The contact stated that the vehicle had not been taken to a dealer after the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact had previously taken the vehicle into a dealer who diagnosed the vehicle and installed a steering damper. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure....
The contact owns a 2023 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH on an interstate with her son occupying the front passenger's side seat, the vehicle shuddered violently. Additionally, the steering wheel became uncontrollable. The contact stopped in the right-hand lane and turned on the hazard lights. The contact was able to continue driving, but the failure recurred while driving. The contact stated that the front end of the vehicle started shuddering violently while driving 60 MPH. Upon researching the failure, the contact's husband became aware that the vehicle had experienced the Death Wobble. The contact stated that while traveling over a bridge and driving 50 MPH over a road seam, the failure recurred. The driver came to a complete stop. The contact stated that the failure recurred while her husband was driving the vehicle, causing the contact's husband to decelerate to 10 MPH. The vehicle was...
Jeep Death Wobble- car shakes violently at freeway speeds (anything over 45 mph) if even small bumps or rain ruts in road. Car is stock parts (no modifications) and has not been used off-road. First occurred at less than 18K miles- repair made by Jeep Dealer, but issue returned within 10K miles. 2nd attempt at repair was blamed by dealer on tires off-balance, however issue has continued to occur. 3rd attempt was made to meet with Service manager at dealership, however he failed to show for meeting and then did not return calls.
The contact owns a 2023 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the contact was veering to the right when the steering wheel failed to respond as needed. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact drove the vehicle to the dealer and the contact was informed that the vehicle needed a stabilizer however, the part was on backorder. The contact also stated that the steering wheel was shaking when the vehicle was first purchased new and that the vehicle was taken to the dealer at least five times prior to the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the part would be sent sooner. The approximate failure mileage was 14,217.
Driving on interstate @ 65 mph, in very heavy traffic, experienced death wobble after going over a road seam bump, making it hard to control the vehicle. Slowed down to 50 and it stopped. I was terrified I was going to crash. It happened several more times during the same trip, whenever over 55 mph. Brought to dealer on 11/27/2023. Dealer says Stellantis is aware of the issue -- and has been sued for it in the past -- but it's been 4 months and Stellantis has not yet provided the replacement part. This is a brand new vehicle with about 4,000 miles on it, and the death wobble continues to occur whenever over 55 mph. Infuriating that Stellantis is aware of this issue yet is still installing malfunctioning parts.
When driving the vehicle at 60mph or faster, the steering wheel will begin to shake uncontrollably and continue to rattle for approximately 30 seconds until the vehicle is reduced speed to about 40mph or less. If I resume speed again, the shaking vibrations will continue to happen repeatedly. This puts my safety at risk when I attempt to drive on the freeway and approach the speed limit and causes me to reduce my speed to an unsafe speed far lower than the flow of traffic on the freeway. In addition, while the vehicle is vibrating/shaking, there is a lack of control of the vehicle and puts the driver in a panic state, because it feels like a flat/blown tire at such a high speed. The vehicle was taken into the dealership and they would not check the problem until I paid for an alignment maintenance fee of over $300. Therefore,...
steering wobble, dealer gives us the run around, finally gives us 18 weeks lead time for new steering vibration dampener, car shakes on highways and is not save to drive, dealing with Jeep is unacceptable
My 2023 Jeep Wrangler is experiencing the "Death Wobble" while driving down the highway or on uneven paved roads. During the "Death Wobble", the steering wheel starts shaking uncontrollably. I have to decelerated to regained control of the vehicle, at which point the shaking of the steering wheel stops. This has become a persistent failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed as having defective tires from Bridgestone. The dealership is requesting the consumer buy new tires to remediated the death wobble and defective tires from Bridgestone.
Experiencing the "Death Wobble" when driving on uneven paved roads/bumps/railroad tracks at speeds as low at 40 miles per hour.
Since new in December 2023 this vehicle has excessive wander while driving straight. This requires constant correction of the steering wheel just to go straight. Anything less than 100% attention can result in loss of control. The wander is related to excessive free play of the steering wheel which allows approximately 2” in each direction from center before the tires move. Three visits to two Jeep dealers resulted in “functioning normally” diagnosis summaries. This is a safety issue in my opinion and Jeep at least needs a documented procedure for dealerships to measure the steering free play.
Violent shaking of the front end (wheels/tires and steering wheel) after hitting a bump in the road. The “death wobble” occurred twice since I bought the vehicle new from a dealership about a year ago. The miles are low (2,000) as the Jeep is my extra vehicle, and no modifications have been done. The first time it happened I was going about 55 mph, and the second time about 65 mph. After the second incident I reviewed the internet and saw the death wobble class action suit that does not cover post-2020 Wranglers. Both incidents occurred during the day on dry and well maintained roads. I made a dealership appointment after the second occurrence, but can’t get in until 1/9/2024. Loss of steering/control in traffic makes this a serious issue.
Going over a bump at 45 mph or greater results in the death wobble. Will not stop shaking until the vehicle slows down.
Our jeep is a leased vehicle with approx 5,200 miles. While riding on the highway going approx 65 mph the vehicle began to death wobble causing the driver to nearly lose control of the car. We were on a 4 lane interstate that could have resulted in a severe accident had the driver actually lost control. With so few miles on the vehicle there is no reason other than a manufacturing defect that would explain how this vehicle could already be experiencing death wobble, a known issue with jeeps
When vehicle is in drive gear, the steering system has a high pitch squeal. It gets louder when the steering wheel is turned. It makes the squealing noise when the tires are straight, when turned a little left or right, and all the way left and right. No warning lights are on or have ever turned on. The engine area also makes a loud tapping noise only when in gear. Loud enough to hear in the cab. I took it to the dealership, after they had it for over 8 hours, I was told all was normal, and even another new model makes the same noises. It must be the new electrical steering system sounds. To have an inspection done, I had to wait 2 weeks for an appointment, after I had asked if it was normal and the service manager heard and confirmed, a service mechanic and the lead...
As I was driving home at around 45 mph, I noticed a flashing light on the dashboard. The light was instructing me to switch to 'P' to start. Additionally, there was a light indicating a plug-in, and the 'D' was flashing. I wasn't sure what was happening, but I knew something was wrong. Gradually, the acceleration slowed down, and I started to feel uneasy. I quickly pulled over to the side of the road. Luckily, the car behind me wasn't speeding, and they were able to slow down and give me space. I put the car in park, turned it off, and then turned it on again. After doing so, I waited for a few seconds, hoping that the problem would be resolved. To my relief, the flashing lights disappeared, and the car started normally. I checked the dashboard again, and everything seemed to be in order. I resumed driving...
When hitting bumps on the highway, my Jeep gets what is referred to as the “death wobble”. The steering wheel (and wheels themselves) shake violently. This is such a well known occurance that it actually had the term “death wobble” assigned to it. It is very hard to maintain control of the vehicle when this happens, creating a hazard for me and others in vehicles around me. Many times I have to come to a complete stop to stop the shaking. This is also a problem because I have to decrease speed quickly and pull off the road, creating a collision risk if anyone is following closely or cannot get over into another lane. This has occurred on multiple occasions.
While driving on the highway @ 65-8ph and if I drive over a rough patch on the road, the steering wheel vibrates for about 20 seconds after clearing the rough patch.
On the evening of Sept. 13th I was driving in-town appx. 25mph, pulling into a Walmart shopping center, when my 2023 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4xe (Purchased in July of 2023) unexpectedly, with NO WARNING shut down! It reduced speed immediately and went into a "coasting mode" almost causing the car behind me to rear-end me. I immediately put on my hazard lights and was attempting to turn the corner to pull it into the parking lot when my steering column seized and the vehicle shut off completely. There were warning lights on the instrument panel, however, I was unable to focus on what they were as I was in sheer panic mode trying not hit or be hit by the sudden shut down of my vehicle. The only warning I can recall was to put the car in park, which I was unable to do because I was in the...
I was driving down a side street when I received several warning lights for service shifter, airbags, seatbelts as well as the engine and all gauges cutting in and out. Following that my power steering went out and I could barely steer the vehicle. I had to call roadside assistance to tow the vehicle. The following fault codes wers pulled via obdii: U0001, U0151, U0155, U017E, U0418, U1442. Each code related to a malfunction with "CAN BUS C" or what the dealership referred to as a "star connector". After further research it is apparent that this part has continued to fail on many jeep wranglers dating back to 2018 and every report I have seen the person has stated the same issue of losing power steering. My jeep is a 2023 and now needs this part replaced. Why hasn't there been a recall on these vehicles for this faulty part?...
After hitting a bump driving normal highway speeds 45+ mph the car begins to shake and vibrate vigorously. It feels like you will lose control of the vehicle and the only way to stop these vibrations is to slow down to 30-40mph. Stopping like this on the freeway seems extremly unsafe when traffic is flowing. The dealership referred to this issue as the "Jeep Death Wobble" and it is apparently a known issue. The vehicle has been into the shop already twice and they have failed to correct the issue. The first time they replaced the stabilizer and the second time they were unable to replicate the issue to the traffic in the area and being not able to drive at highway speeds. Stellantis/FCA have requested I continue to to Drive this vehicle even with these issues saying this is not a safety issue.
The contact owns a 2023 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that the vehicle rooftop was made of fiber glass that dropped on the vehicle occupants while driving. The contact stated that the fiber glass could cause health issues if inhaled. The contact stated that the dealer had replaced the rooftop once, and the freedom panels twice; however, the failure persisted as the replacement parts were made of the same materials. The contact stated that the dealer informed him that the top was made from trust and bonded fiber glass. Additionally, the contact stated while driving 40-60 MPH, the steering wheel was shuddering back and forth, causing the vehicle to vibrate and to sway. The contact also stated that while driving at highway speeds, the vehicle pulled to the left side. The contact turned the steering to the right in order to keep the vehicle in the lane. There was no...
Intermitent severe shaking in steering wheel "Death Wobble". This happen around 10 times now and still dealer dont know how to fix it. During the event it cause you to panic and potential accident.
The contact owns a 2023 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle would not start immediately. The contact stated that after several attempts the vehicle started. While driving out a parking lot, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to the residence. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but no cause for the failure was found. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 6,000.
The contact owns a 2021 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel locked, causing him to momentarily lose control of the vehicle. Upon attempting to bring the vehicle to a stop, the contact stated that the brake pedal was stuck in its resting position, prompting him to pull the parking brake, which also failed to bring the vehicle to a stop. As a result, the contact stated that he collided with the vehicle ahead. An unknown warning light was illuminated on the instrument panel prior to the failure being experienced. The air bags did deploy. A police report was filed, and no injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and later towed to the dealer, who declined to diagnose the vehicle due to the body damage. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened....
The power steering pump squeaks and squeals at low speeds when turning the vehicle. Potential for power steering failure resulting in loss of control. Dealer stated the squeaking noise is normal. Dealer refused to do a proper inspection only an audio inspection. No warning lights.
Was driving down the highway, warning lights on the dashboard illuminated. Lost power, engine and electrical power. Message to place Jeep in park came on. Pulled car to shoulder. It would not start for two hours. Tow truck arrived. Jeep would start. Taken to Jeep dealership and nothing was found wrong with it. Same thing happened one week later. I checked ant there is no recall for my specific car
Our 2023 Jeep Wrangler has the "death wobble" which causes the front end of the vehicle to violently shake and the steeering wheel to almost cause loss of control. Jeep knows about this defect, as does the NHTSA. Jeep need to be mandated to do a recall and fix the issue.
Two days into driving my brand-new Jeep I experienced the death wobble and lost control of my steering wheel on the freeway. I took it to the dealer they replaced the damper. But it happened again where I didn't have control but it didn't shake I just had to get off the freeway once I it stopped hydroplaning without it raining. The steering wheel is not straight and on different types of roads the car drifts and wanders. I am terrified of driving it on the freeway.
I was driving 65 on the freeway when the steering suddenly goes out &stiffens so hard I could not turn the car. It was very heavy. Fortunately all the cars were going in the same direction &I managed to merge over but was at that point going about 40 on the freeway, which is dangerous in itself There was a major warning light that went on, but of course, bc I was struggling w/the car, I couldn’t read what it said, & then after I pulled over, I noticed another smaller warning light of the stop/start system, but from what I understand there could be any number of issues under that warning light the dealer has had my car for over a week they can’t find anything specific on the car. I have been looking at the Wrangler forums and heard similar complaints and similar incidences for over 6 yrs...
No incident yet, but too much play in the steering. Constantly correcting from left to right to stay middle of the road.
The contact owns a 2023 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 MPH, the vehicle was swaying from side to side. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the steering was operating as designed. The dealer also informed the contact that the electronic control module that communicated with the steering box and the steering wheel could override intended steering. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 13,000.
