I am writing to report a concerning issue with my Hyundai Sonata 2016 regarding excessive oil consumption. Every 1000 miles, the vehicle requires approximately 1.5 quarts of oil, if not more. This rapid depletion of oil presents a significant safety risk for driving the car. Upon contacting the dealership regarding this matter, I was informed that they have no knowledge of such issues, which contradicts the numerous complaints I have read and heard from fellow Hyundai owners experiencing similar oil consumption problems. The dealership has suggested conducting an oil consumption test, which they advise will cost us a minimum of $280. However, it seems unfair to incur this expense for what appears to be a common manufacturing defect, particularly since our vehicle is no longer under warranty due to its mileage of 110,000 miles. I firmly believe that Hyundai should take responsibility for any related repair expenses arising from this...
The 2016 Hyundai Sonata 2.4L engine have an abnormal oil consumption, every 1,000 miles consume 1 quart of oil. After the discover of the issue, the car was took to Hyundai dealership for service and confirmed the car have an excessive oil consumption. They performed engine flush with additives to clean up the engine and see if the oil consumption diminished. An oil consumption test is currently in process to see if there are positive results. I read multiple articles about oil consumption issues and most of the cases Hyundai decide to replace the engine.
I was driving on the highway yesterday at 85mph when the engine light started flashing and the rpms went haywire. Then within 2 minutes of this taking place the car began to slow down and not want to go any further. I managed to get over to the shoulder of the road when the engine just shut off and would not restart. The engine drinks oil like crazy. We put oil in it every week and get frequent oil changes. On the day that it broke down on, I had been to the oil lube center that we do business with and had them top off all of my fluids. After looking into this problem online, it appears that there are many other people suffering with the same lemon of a car. Hyundai knows that there is a real problem with the 2016 Sonata, and they are not doing anything...
ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED ON MY DASHBOARD IN LATE FEB 2024. AT THE SAME TIME, THERE WAS A NOTED FLUID LEAK ON MY PARKING SKIRT SO I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED DRIVING IT. ON [XXX] I HAD CAR TOWED TO MIKE'S AUTOMATIVE SERVICE STATION IN SOUTH MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN. HE REMEDIED THE ENGINE ISSUE WITH 'LEAK STOP'. ON [XXX], I WAS TRAVELING AN [XXX] FROM MILWAUKEE TO OSHKOSH. AROUND HALF WAY, THE ENGINE LIGHT BEGAN FLASHING, THE OIL LIGHT WAS ON AND THE CAR LOST ABILITY TO ACCELERATE. I ENGAGED MY HAZARD LIGHTS GIVEN I WAS IN HIGH TRAFFIC AT THAT TIME AND 'LIMPED' CAR TO THE NEARST GAS STATION, TO AVOID BEING STRANDED ON THE HIGHWAY. IT WAS TOWED TO A NEARBY LOCATION, RICHFIELD SERVICE CENTER-RICHFIELD WI. BOTH THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER AND THE SERVICE STATION REP, SEAN, ADVISED THIS OIL-LEAKING ENGINE BUSINESS WAS A WIDESPREAD AND WELL-KNOWN MANUFACTURER DEFECT FOR THIS VEHICLE'S...
I have a 2016 Hyundai Sonata that I purchased in 2021. The engine began "knocking" at 142,000 miles so I took it to dealership as it looked to be the same issue many of the Hyundais have been experiencing. I was then informed my claim was denied because a Service Campain from 2018 had not been performed. This is a known issue with these vehicles but my claim was denied over something outside of my control.
Recall code on my engine p1326
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at speeds of 50 - 60 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The check engine warning light was illuminated, and the vehicle shut off. The driver made several attempts to restart the vehicle while attempting to accelerate. The vehicle was towed to the dealer three times. The first diagnostic report was that the knock sensors had failed and needed to be replaced. The knock sensors were replaced twice however, the failure remained persistent. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 70,000.
On February 6, around 3:46am, parked my vehicle on the driveway I noticed a smell like smoke, I looked at my dashboard but nothing was on, no warnings, so I entered my house a few minutes later Possibly 4 I heard a noise look outside from my window an noticed my car was on fire, immediately called 911 car garage door also cut on fire and the vehicle next to it. I m requesting an investigation Police report 24-031575, my vehicle was towed by insurance company Start Casualty claim # 2024-90001577.
Background Info : On November 28th, 2023 I filed a case with Hyundai Consumer Affairs due to smoke and sparks coming from my 2016 HYUNDAI SONATA engine. I was assigned to a Case Coordinator Carla who did not provide her last name at telephone 714-694-4963. She was my contact person for the repair. I signed a tow authorization on November 28th , 2023 authorizing HMA to tow the vehicle to the nearest Hyundai dealership due to some delays in coordination on behalf on my contact Carla and the dealership Pohanka Hyundai received my vehicle on approximately December 4th, 2023. Per correspondence from Carla she had contacted the dealership with no response until the 18th of December 2023; approximately two weeks after the dealership received my vehicle. She informed me that she had made countless attempts to reach a service team member for follow up on an inspection. On December 18th...
I have a 2016 Hyundai Sonata that has had repeated engine issues including stalling overheating and shutting off. The car engine also caught on Fire on [XXX} and was reported to Hyundai Consumer affairs where a case was opened. The car was in the dealership for repair until [XXX] I have a warranty that the dealership or Hyundai did not honor for the engine, power train. The services that were repaired was a replacement of a engine piece which is Continuously Variable Valve Timing) System which controls the controls the open & close timing of intake valve to improve engine performance. On approximately [XXX] 3 days after picking the car up which I had to incur the cost of the repair as Hyundai did not honor my warranty the engine as well as oil light came on The car repair included transmission oil flush and engine oil replacement per the...
My vehicle has been consuming oil very often. I have done regular maintenance on it since I purchased the vehicle. I first noticed the issue in August of last year. My remaining oil in my engine before an oil change would be little to none. I brought it to a Hyundai Dealership and they told me they can do nothing. They told me if my check engine light came on and my engine seized, to call them. I had a check engine light of O2 sensors being out. I replaced those. My engine continued to consume oil. I had another check engine light come on last week and it was my timing sensors. They went out. I replaced those and my technician looked inside my engine, and it is filled with metal shavings. My timing chains will go off if I drive my vehicle and my engine will no longer...
INTAKE CAMSHAFT CVVT COVER AND SENSOR INTAKE CAMSHAFT CVVT OIL PLUG PLUG Exhaust Manifold I am up to date on all me oil changes and everytime I get and oil change the oil goes so fast! This has actually been happening ever since I got the vehicle. My acceleration has been decreasing when I get an oil change.
While driving the car a noise came from the engine and I lost acceleration and then the car just died in the middle of busy traffic. The car was stuck in busy traffic till it could be towed since it wouldn't restart. After doing research it is a known problem with Hyundai and Kia engines and there are thousands of people like me and Hyundai refuses to take responsibility and puts the blame on the consumer stating they didn't maintain the vehicle. I could of been seriously injured by this and a lot of others are in jeopardy with these faulty engines.
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine had seized and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 158,000.
I changed out every cylinder, axel, within 6 months and now on March 22, 2023, they said I needed a new engine. P0300, P0303 MISFIRE. They said the car misfired. I thought that's why they changed all the cylinders. WHY DID THIS HAPPEN? My car has been parked in the garage. Why do I have to fix a problem that was just fixed? Still confused
My car was burning through oil fairly quickly. I had to refill my oil in between oil changes. I was also getting oil changes about every 2k miles until I realized it was not normal. I contacted Hyundai about an oil consumption test on December 19th. I did not hear back until almost 2 weeks. The email did not ask me what I needed but basically said” you’ve talked to someone if you need something let us know” I had called in to check the status. Not sure why they thought this was resolved. About a week later my engine failed. Hyundai will not fix my engine because it does not fall under warranty. From what the mechanic told me, my car has carbon build up due to the burning oil which caused my cylinders to crack. I don’t know much about cars but oil is not suppose to burn...
On the way home after I purchasing my son his 2016 Hyundai sonata limited, he noticed his oil light come on and he stopped to check his oil and it was almost empty. He got an oil change and called the dealer and they told us that it was probably the oil change place that didn’t tighten the drain cap. We took it to them and they said no issues with the cap. Went back to Hyundai and when you open the hood the engine is shiny and coated in oil . They would not do anything for us , the car was at 117k and they told us to drive it till it knocks and fill it and maybe Hyundai would replace engine . Hyundai did not warranty this cars engine. He has had his car now for 5 months and puts over a gallon of oil in it...
Engine began misfiring, spark plug coated in oil which indicates piston ring defect. I get regular scheduled maintenance, often needing oil far before maintenance would be due. This is a KNOWN issue and Hyundai is NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILITY.
I am writing to bring to your attention a critical issue affecting my 2016 HYUNDAI SONATA 4 DOOR SEDAN, that warrants investigation and public awareness. Hyundai cars are currently plagued by ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEMS that ultimately lead to ENGINE FAILURE, due to there being NO WARNING LAMPS, MESSAGES, or OTHER SYMPTOMS OF THE PROBLEM PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. This is a concerning issue that remains largely unknown to most customers. When these issues arise, car owners such as myself, are often left with uncooperative dealerships that either deny the problem or offer minimal assistance. Even Hyundai corporate and extended warranties fail to provide adequate support, frequently citing owner negligence as a reason for denial. This occurs despite the fact that engine sludge buildup is inevitable, even with consistent car maintenance. Furthermore, I am forced to endure long waiting times for MY 2016 HYUNDAI SONATA 4 DOOR SEDAN, THAT HAS...
I Bought a Hyundai Sonata in the spring of 2018 from a previous owner. Before buying the car, I contacted Hyundai and they told me engine issues would be covered. In December 2022 I talked with the customer service national office and told me I was lucky that I had two engine warranties, one up to 120k miles and the other unlimited. I was told to check my oil usage every month to ensure a warranty. The car started using oil this fall 2023. I took the car to the dealership as requested by Hyundai. We have paid almost $1000 for tests. Hyundai of Noblesville says the car is drinking oil 2.8 quarts for less than 1000 miles, a test Hyundai requires. Making you drive a car with less than half its engine oil is self-destroying the engine. Hyundai is not willing to pay for the repairs. Being required to...
My hyaundai is burning through oil every 500-1000 miles it will be completely empty
On the evening of 11/28/2023 I had my vehicle parked in my garage of my home when my smoke detectors went off. I went to my garage to discover it was full of smoke and it particularly was coming from the front of the engine I had my son call the fire department and poured water on the small fire as it was still smoking when they arrived. there is visible burn marks on the engine hood from the fire

Hyundai cars are currently plagued by oil consumption problems that ultimately lead to engine failure, a concerning issue that remains largely unknown to most customers. When these issues arise, car owners are often left to grapple with uncooperative dealerships that either deny the problem or offer minimal assistance. Even Hyundai corporate and extended warranties fail to provide adequate support, frequently citing owner negligence as a reason for denial. This occurs despite the fact that engine sludge buildup is inevitable, even with consistent car maintenance. Furthermore, car owners are forced to endure long waiting times for their vehicles to be inspected and, if approved for an engine replacement, face additional months of delay. The situation is exacerbated by the lack of loaner vehicles and no assurance of rental reimbursement. This...
Engine is burning the oil quickly. Hyundai dealer performed oil consumption test and found that engine is burning the oil quickly and I need to add 1-quarter at every 750 miles. Dealer told me if you are 1st owner than Hyundai will replace the engine but i am second owner i won't eligible for engine replacement. Due to this problem, oil get on the spark plug and car is vibrating a lot and I feel it very dangerous. I have check online and many people have this issue. I would appreciate it if you could help me here.
Engine is burning is oil at least 1,5 qt on 1000 miles, added 7 quarts of oil in 3500miles, dealership is playing around and says everything is ok, did a oil consumption test and wrote down that is burning 0,5 qt and don’t want to recognize that the have to change the engine on warranty
Engine seized on the highway
The contact owned a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that while her son was driving at approximately 45 mph, the check engine warning lights illuminated. The vehicle began to shake, lost power, and failed to accelerate. The driver pulled over and noticed smoke, and the vehicle caught fire. The fire department was on the scene and extinguished the fire. It was unknown if a police report was filed. There were no reported injuries. The air bag did not deploy. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The insurance company deemed the vehicle a total loss. The manufacturer was not contacted. The contact mentioned that in 2021, the motor may have been replaced. The failure mileage was approximately 62,000.
Engine failure. Metal in the engine oil pan. P1326 code. No warranty coverage and no recall. Replacing the parts myself. Vehicle went into limp mode without warning. Oil bypassing one of the pistons. Lower end was loose.
3 months after the engine was replaced under extended manufacturer warranty the vehicle started shifting funny, took it to the dealership and was told the transmission was bad, then another person in service said the transmission wasn't bad and didn't need to be replaced and they couldn't find anything wrong (after waiting for 2+ weeks for the transmission to come in), then the car left us stranded on the side of the road and not running, took it back to the dealership and was told it's a bad catalytic converter and we had to pay $2000+ to replace it. They at this time blamed the engine issues on a bad alternator. Now the car has a check engine light again and is throwing the code permanently for the catalytic converter. No way that a HYBRID car that barely ever actually runs on the engine should need a new calaytic converter...
Engine began having issues with stalling out around 70k Miles. Car was taken to the dealer and Tessa on for issue couldn’t be diagnosed. Car then began again at 83k miles took it to a repair shop and the issue could not be pin pointed once again. I was informed that the engine would have to completely fail for the issue to be properly diagnosed. Engine completely failed at 100k miles from barring breaking while I was driving the vehicle with my children in the car. Vehicle had to be towed to a mechanic shop and later transferred to Hyundai of Cumming. This issue was then confirmed for engine failure due to barrings breaks and the oil not circulating through the engine. There were not any prior warnings signs such as a light on dashboard or smoke out of the exhaust. All car maintenance is documented and up to date....
Yesterday while driving my vehicle engine stalled and wouldn't go over 40 MPH, about 10 seconds later the engine would not go over 15 MPH.
I constantly have to purchase bottles of oil and put into the car in between oil changes. The oil burns so fast and the car does not give a low oil signal on the dash. This is a known issue because the dealer recommended I return in between the oil change for a free top off because Hyundai engines are known for burning oil. I spend extra money every 2 weeks buying oil.

Engine is experiencing excessive oil consumption. Vehicle was confirmed by dealership.
Was driving home when my car went into limp mode - couldn’t pick up speed to keep up with the flow of traffic. This seems to be due to the car’s engine knock sensor being triggered. It is impossible to get it to the dealer in a timely manner. We are having to wait half a month before it can even be diagnosed.
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving at 55 MPH, other drivers started beeping the horn and shouting that the vehicle was on fire. The contact immediately veered to the side of the road. The contact then noticed flames under the front end of the vehicle, near the engine location. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the fire was extinguished independently. There was no injury sustained. The contact stated that the vehicle was towed to her son-in-law's repair shop, where it remained. There was no police report filed. An unknown dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that a repair fee would be charged for the engine replacement. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The contact related the failure to an unknown recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to take the...
Bought the car on 08/20/2022. On 09/07/2022 we took the car back to Allen Turner because the engine light was flashing and the car would not go over a certain speed. There were metal shavings in the oil. It was throwing code P1326. They did an update on car and told me the cylinder walls were scored but the motor had a lifetime warranty no matter what happened to it. Every time we would have the oil changed, we would have to add 3 quarts of oil every 10-15 days. The vehicle stalled out at a very busy intersection nearly causing a wreck with my teenage daughter driving. Had it towed to dealership and they said it needed a new motor because it has one of the defective motors in it according to the VIN. Then they told me it was oil consumption and they could replace spark plugs and...
Excessive oil consumption. Failed the oil consumption test preformed by Hyundai multiple times. Hyundai performed full engine cleaning and still consumes an excessive amount of oil.
09/16/2023: ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE ARRIVED AT WORK AT 830AM AND LEFT AT 4PM. WENT TO FEDEX (5 MIN AWAY FROM JOB) AND NOTICED BURNING SMELL. LEFT FEDEX (WAS THERE LESS THAN A MINUTE BECAUSE I WAS DROPPING ENVELOPE IN DROP BOX) AND NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER HOOD. DROVE ABOUT A BLOCK AND WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN I NOTICED MORE SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. PULLED BACK INTO JOB'S PARKING LOT (SINCE IT WAS CLOSE) AND WITHIN 5 MINUTES THE ENGINE WAS IN FLAMES. FLAMES WERE EXTINGUISHED, BUT CAR WAS NO LONGER DRIVEABLE. INSURANCE CLAIM WAS FILED AND VEHICLE WAS DEEMED A TOTAL LOSS. CAUSE OF ENGINE FIRE IS STILL UNDETERMINED PER INSURANCE COMPANY.
THIS VEHICLE AND MODEL HAVE A DEFECTIVE ENGINE; I HAVE MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS SINCE I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FROM THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THIS ISSUE CORRECTED, AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS PARTICULAR ENGINE, AND IT IS A WELL-KNOWN PROBLEM; THERE ARE SEVERAL CLASS ACTION SUITS REGARDING THIS ENGINE, AND THE MANUFACTURERS STILL HAVE NO RESOLUTION FOR IT. THE VEHICLE REQUIRES CONSTANT NEW OIL IN BETWEEN OIL CHANGES AND HAS BEEN LIKE THAT SINCE NEW. THE ENGINE BURNS OIL, AND IT IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE, NOOEN SEEMS TO KNOW.
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 MPH, the vehicle almost stalled with the accelerator pedal depressed. The contact stated that while slowing down for a traffic light, the contact heard an abnormal pop. After arriving to the residence, the contact became aware of a trail of oil and a pool of oil underneath the vehicle. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The contact opened the hood and became aware that the engine compartment was covered with oil. The contact stated that prior to the engine failure, the vehicle had been consuming approximately 2 quarts of oil per week. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was...
Car stalled check engine light came on took to auto zone said a engine problem
I keep having the same issue with this vehicle's fuel/propulsion system, power train, engine, cruise control. This vehicle is need it's fuel system cleaned now for a 3rd time in less then 2 years. I have done the high mileage maintenance on it as well. I drive the vehicle less than 5,000 miles a year. When I am driving the vehicle, it struggles to speed up, making me press on the gas repeatedly to get to the indicated speed limit. The vehicle does not slow down as it should when pressing on the brakes. I have to press repeatedly over and over and harder on the brakes in order for it to slow down. The vehicle jerks, speeds up without me pressing on the gas and sometimes it will not stop when prompted. I cannot put this vehicle on cruise control, because it speeds up and out of no where,...
I just got my car out the shop on April 29th at a Hyundai dealer and on may 2nd was driving on highway my check engine came back on and my speed decreased on its own almost causing a wreck then my car would only go 20mph in a 70 mph zone I have contacted Hyundai they refuse to do anything
The first time my engine light came on was about a month after I had purchased it. The dealership told me to go to autozone to see what it could be. Report said it could possible be an oil clog or oil change. I got an oil change and the light was off. Light came on an every now and then but the car was driving fine. I got another oil change at the recommended mileage. My car won’t start now, I thought it was a battery issue so I took it in to a mechanic to have it looked at and they said I need a new engine.
Engine is constantly burning through oil. I would get my oil checked 4 times more just to make sure I had oil and even then it would burn empty. I did not have a leak. This cause my engine to blow. This was unsafe as I could have been driving when this occurred. This is being confirmed by a certified Hyundai mechanic. No warning. Other Hyundai cars have a recall for this SAME engine issue but not my model and make
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the engine had failed. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the high-pressure fuel pump had failed. The contact related the failure to an unknown Hyundai Extended Warranty that had expired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 98,000.
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH uphill, the vehicle decelerated unintendedly to approximately 35 MPH and gradually accelerated as needed. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure recurred while driving on another occasion. The check engine warning light illuminated. Additionally, the contact stated that on the third occurrence, the vehicle lost motive power and shutoff after pulling into a parking lot. The check engine warning light, the battery warning light, and the low oil pressure warning light were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the engine had seized and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 127,000.
Motor is bad per dealership but will not cover it due to car having a branded title
