CAR WAS IN PARK. WHEN I TURNED ON THE IGNITION AND STARTED TO BACK OUT I COULDN'T TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AND THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. I PUT THE CAR BACK IN PARK, TURNED IT OFF THEN BACK ON AFTER A COUPLE OF MINUTES AND IT WAS FINE. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 4 TIMES WITHIN THE PAST YEAR.
7 YEARS AGO I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW 2012 FORD FOCUS FROM A LOCAL DEALERSHIP. THE CAR CURRENTLY HAS 36,600 MILES ONLY, BUT SO FAR HAD 3 RECALLS(!). 1 FOR TRANSMISSION ISSUES (GOT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY SAID THEY FIXED IT BUT TO THIS DATE IT IS STILL STALLING WHEN ACCELERATING), 1 FOR DEFECT DOOR LATCHES, AND 1 FOR THE FUEL PUMP. ON TOP OF THESE 2 DAYS AGO WHILE TRYING TO BACK OUT FROM A PARKING LOT THE STEERING WHEEL WENT DEAD AND A WARNING CAME UP ON THE DASHBOARD SCREEN SAYING THE POWER STEERING IS OUT. TOWED IT AND TOOK IT TO THE NEAREST FORD DEALERSHIP AND AFTER TWO DAYS I GOT THE NEW THAT RACK AND PINION NEED REPLACEMENT AND IT WILL COST $2,100 PARTS AND LABOR. CALLED FORD MOTORS COMPANY AND THEY SAID IT'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO SINCE THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY....
STARTING MY CAR WHILE PARKED, POWER STEERING MALFUNCTION INDICATED ON DASH, I WOULD SHUT THE CAR OFF AND START IT AGAIN AND IT WOULD CLEAR, HOWEVER AFTER MULTIPLE TIMES OF THIS OCCURRING IT IS CONSTANT. I AM UNABLE TO DRIVE MY CAR AND WILL HAVE TO PAY CLOSE TO $2000 FOR THE REPAIR. MY CAR HAS 55000 MILES!

THE POWER STEERING ASSIST MALFUNCTION LIGHT WENT ON AND POWER STEERING FAILED THREE TIMES ON MY FORD FOCUS 2012. WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR, THE MALFUNCTION LIGHT WENT AWAY AND POWER STEERING RETURNED. EACH TIME THE VEHICLE WAS IN A STATIONARY POSITION. THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THE RACK AND PINION MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THANK GOODNESS MY VEHICLE WAS NOT IN MOTION OR SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH COULD HAVE OCCURRED. THE VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 35,000 MILES ON IT AND THERE IS NO REASON WHY THIS SIGNIFICANT OF A REPAIR IS NECESSARY ON A VEHICLE WITH SO LITTLE MILEAGE ON IT. THIS IS CLEARLY A MANUFACTURER DEFECT PROBLEM AND NOT A WEAR AND TEAR ISSUE. FORD WAS NOT WILLING TO ASSIST IN ANY WAY UNLESS THIS PART IS SUBJECT TO A RECALL.
2012 FORD FOCUS SE POWER STEERING FAILURE LIGHT COMES ON. FIXED POWER STEERING HARD TOP STEER. SO REPLACED STEERING GEAR, STEERING WHEEL SENSOR AND REPROGRAMMING STEERING WHEEL. ALSO ALIGNMENT STEERING WHEEL SENSOR ASSEMBLY. TOLD HARD TO GET SENSOR AND REPROGRAM AFTER REPAIRS. SOP ADDITIONAL COST TO FIX.
WHEN I STARTED MY CAR, THE STEERING FELT LIKE IT LOCKED UP, AND THE STEERING ASSIST FAULT LIGHT CAME ON. I HAD TO TURN OFF MY CAR, AND TURN IT BACK ON BEFORE IT WORKED PROPERLY. IT HAS DONE THIS TWO TIMES NOW IN THE PAST THREE DAYS
I WAS TURNING MY CAR (IN MOTION) ON A LOCAL STREET AND MY POWER STEERING ASSIST STOPPED WORKING COMPLETELY, WITH MY THREE YEAR OLD IN THE BACK SEAT. I WAS UNABLE TO TO MAKE THE TURN ADEQUATELY, AND EVEN PULLED A MUSCLE IN MY SHOULDER TRYING TO FORCE THE STEERING WHEEL IN THE CORRECT DIRECTION.
OVER THE COURSE OF A YEAR, AN INDICATOR WARNING MESSAGE KEPT COMING ON ABOUT THE POWER STEERING MANUAL ASSIST, WHICH TURNS OUT TO BE A DEFECT IN THE STEERING COLUMN. TURNING THE CAR ON AND OFF SOLVED THE ISSUE AT THE BEGINNING. BUT THEN WHILE I WAS ON THE ROAD IN SEPTEMBER OF 2018, THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND WOULDN'T GO OFF. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP AND HAVE THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN REPLACED FOR $2,200. THE COST WAS NEGLIGIBLE TO THE RISK'WE WHO OWN THESE CARS WERE RISKING OUR LIVES AND THE LIVES OF PEOPLE ON THE ROAD. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND FORD OUGHT TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE BY FIXING THE PROBLEM FOR FREE.

THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 53,000.
STEERING ASSIST FAULT - THREE TIMES SINCE THE PURCHASE OF THIS VEHICLE IT HAS DISPLAYED THIS MESSAGE. IT ALWAYS WENT AWAY AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON. THE THIRD TIME IT HAS NOT GONE AWAY. THE VEHICLE HAS NO POWER STEERING. 6 YEARS OLD/ BOUGHT NEW OFF THE LOT/ 92000 MILES.
WHEN I START MY CAR AND GET READY TO DRIVE OFF MY STEERING WHEEL GETS STUCK AND WON'T MOVE. IT IS STARTING TO DO IT ALOT.
IN EARLY 2017 I STARTED EXPERIENCING ISSUES WITH THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING. I WOULD TURN MY CAR ON SOME DAYS AND IT WOULD SAY POWER STEERING MALFUNCTION AND THERE WAS NO POWER STEERING MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AND DRIVE. TURNING IT OFF AND BACK ON (SOMETIMES SEVERAL TIMES) WOULD GET RID OF THE ERROR CODE AND I WOULD BE ABLE TO DRIVE IT LIKE NORMAL. A MONTH AGO AT 129,000 MILES THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AGAIN, BUT THIS TIME IT IS OUT FOR GOOD. NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES I RESTART THE CAR, THE ERROR CODE WILL NOT GO AWAY. THE COST TO REPAIR IS OUTRAGEOUS FOR A CAR THAT IS NOT WORTH MUCH DUE TO THE HORRIBLE REVIEWS AND UNENDING PROBLEMS THAT EVERYONE IS EXPERIENCING. ON TOP OF THAT, I HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH THE CAR SHUDDERING CONSTANTLY WHEN I DRIVE IT. MY TRANSMISSION WENT...
WHEN I START THE CAR A MESSAGE COMES ON THE DASH THAT SAYS STEERING ASSIST MALFUNCTION AND THE CAR WILL NOT STEER. I HAVE TO TURN IT OFF AND WAIT A MINUTE AND TRY TO START THE CAR AGAIN.
VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION WITH MY SON DRIVING. TURNING LEFT AT A PROTECTED GREEN ARROW, THE POWER STEERING STOPPED WORKING AND THE WHEEL EFFORT SKYROCKETED. CAR WAS JERKED RIGHT, MY SON SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AND HE WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER. STOPPED, LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD. NOTHING SEEN. RESTARTED THE CAR AND A "POWER STEERING ASSIST MODEL FAULT" WAS ILLUMINATED. TURNED THE CAR OFF. TURNED CAR BACK ON AND THE FAULT WAS GONE. DROVE CAR 1 MILE HOME AT LOW SPEED WITH HAZARDS. ERROR COMES BACK UNPREDICTABLY AND DANGEROUSLY.
STEERING ASSIST FAULT SERVICE REQUIRED WARNING SIGNAL SHOWING ON DASH BOARD. STEER IS VERY HEAVY, CANNOT TURN. CANNOT MAKE RIGHT OR LEFT TURN. I STARTED ENGINE TODAY AND GOT NOTIFICATION THAT "STEERING ASSIST" NEEDS ATTENTION. I JUST RECENTLY TOOK MY CAR TO DEALER FOR RECALLS ON DOOR LATCHES, WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR, AND TRANSMISSION. THEY KEPT IT 2 WEEKS AND I HAD TO PAY $393.00 FOR REPAIR OF BROKEN MOTOR MOUNT AND WIRING DIAGNOSTIC BECAUSE LINKAGE TO COMPUTER FAILED DUE TO SHORT. I HAVE ATTACHED THE DEALER INVOICE FOR THESE SERVICES. ON SEEING PROBLEM WITH POWER STEERING ASSIST I LOOKED ON INTERNET AND SEE THAT FORD HAS ISSUED RECALLS FOR MOTOR MOUNTS,STEERING ASSIST PROBLEMS, AND FAULTY WIRING ISSUES ON OTHER FORD MODELS BUT NOT FOR THE FOCUS. I HAVE NOT RECEIVED RECALL INFO FOR THE MOTOR MOUNT, STEERING ASSIST PROBLEM, OR WIRING ISSUES FOR MY FOCUS. SHOULD THEY NOT BE REQUIRED TO DO SO IF THEY HAVE ISSUED RECALLS FOR OTHER FORD PRODUCTS WITH THE SAME ISSUES?

I HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE FOR THREE DAYS (10-28-18) WHEN THE STEERING ASSIST STOPPED WORKING WHEN IT WAS STARTED. THE CAR WAS STATIONARY AND THE MESSAGE ON THE DISPLAY SAID STEERING ASSIST FAULT. WHEN THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED IT WAS OK. THIS CAR HAS 71100 MILES ON IT AND WAS PURCHASED AS A FIRST CAR FOR MY SON WHO IS 17.

I AGREED TO HAVE DEALERSHIP DO THE WORK AS I WAS TOO SCARED TO DRIVE THE CAR. THIS SEEMS LIKE A WIDESPREAD AND DANGEROUS ISSUE THAT IS VERY COMMON WITH THIS MODEL, WHY ISN'T THERE A RECALL?
POWER STEERING WOULD FAIL UNEXPECTEDLY. AT TIMES WHILE DRIVING. ONLY REMEDY WAS TO REPLACE.
WHEN STARTING THE CAR, BEFORE DRIVING, "STEERING ASSIST MALFUNCTION" COMES ON THE SCREEN AND THE STEERING WHEEL WILL NOT TURN. THIS HAPPENS A COUPLE OF TIMES A DAY AND I FEAR THIS WILL IMPAIR THE ABILITY TO TURN DURING DRIVING OR WHEN STARTING MY COMMUTE. I FOUND RESTARTING THE CAR A FEW TIMES ELIMINATED THIS ERROR.
POWER STEERING FAULT HAS BEEN COMING ON AND OFF FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. AN ENGINE RESTART NORMALLY RESETS LIGHT. ON OCTOBER 23, 2018, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON WHILE IN MOTION AND COMPLETELY DISABLE MY ABILITY TO CONTROL THE CAR. THE VEHICLE IS NOW PARK AND CANNOT BE DRIVEN.
POWER ASSIST STEERING FAULT COMES AND GOES, AS WELL AS STEERING. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED.
UPON IGNITION A MESSAGE 'STEERING ASSIST FAULT SVC REQUIRED' SOMETIMES APPEARS AND THE STEERING WHEEL IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO TURN. PROBLEM IS USUALLY REMEDIED BY TURNING OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTARTING BUT CAN SOMETIMES TAKE THREE TRIES. PROBLEM WAS INTERMITTENT BUT IS BECOMING MORE FREQUENT. SO FAR IT ONLY HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PARKED ON LEVEL GROUND AND SLIGHTLY INCLINED DRIVEWAYS. ONLINE RESEARCH SUGGESTS BAD PLACEMENT OF THE STEERING MODULE IS CAUSING INTERNAL ELECTRONICS TO OVERHEAT AND DEVELOP FAULTS.
STEERING ASSIST MALFUNCTION ON FORD FOCUS 2012 MODEL. THIS ERROR WOULD COME UP PERIODICALLY OVER THE LAST 6 MONTHS, BUT WOULD GO AWAY WHEN RESTARTING THE VEHICLE. ON 3 OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING DOWN A SIDE STREET WITH A SPEED LIMIT OF 35MPH, A POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT NOTIFICATION APPEARED. ON ONE OCCASION IT PREVENTED MY BRAKE PEDAL FROM ENGAGING THE BRAKES. THE PARKING BRAKE STILL WORKED. THE VEHICLE HAS A 3RD PARTY WARRANTY THROUGH THE DEALER I BOUGHT IT FROM, WHEN TAKEN TO THEIR MECHANICS IT WAS STATED THAT THEY COULD FIND NO TRACE OR CAUSE OF THE ISSUE AND COULD NOT REPLICATE.
STEERING ASSIST MALFUNCTION-SERVICE REQUIRED KEEPS COMING ON. WHEN IS A RECALL COMING. SCARED THIS IS GOING TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE TO TURM THE CAR OFF AND ON THEN WAIT TIL IT DECIDES IT WANTS TO MOVE. AFRAID THE STEERING WILL LOCK WHILE DRIVING. SO FAR IT HAS ONLY HAPPENED WHILE STATIONARY BUT HAS CAUSED PROBLEMS WHEN DRIVING IN REVERSE TO GET OUT OF A PARKING SPACE.

POWER STEERING IS DISABLED UPON STARTING VEHICLE. I THOUGHT THIS WAS JUST A RANDOM ERROR BECAUSE I WOULD TURN VEHICLE OFF THEN ON AND THEN IT WAS FINE. NOW THE ERROR WILL NOT TURN OFF AND I DO NOT HAVE POWER STEERING AT ALL.
FOR THE PAST 6 MONTHS, EVERY TIME I START UP THE CAR THE STEERING COLUMN IS ALMOST LOCKED. I START BACKING OUT AND IT LOOSENS UP. THIS MORNING I STARTED MY CAR UP AND IT WAS LOCKED AGAIN, BUT I GOT THE MESSAGE ON THE DASH STEERING ASSIST MALFUNCTION, AND IT NEVER LOOSENED UP. I WAS A LITTLE NERVOUS DRIVING IT OT WORK, BUT I HAD TO GET THERE. I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THIS NEEDS TO GET FIXED.

POWER STEERING HAS BEEN GOING "IN AND OUT" FOR ABOUT A YEAR. RESOLVED TEMPORARILY TYPICALLY BY RESTARTING ENGINE. HOWEVER, POWER STEERING PERMANENTLY FAILED 9/24/18. T CALLED CUSTOMER CARE STATING FORD KNEW ABOUT THE ISSUE (2017 DISMISSED LAWSUIT). THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY IN A PARKING LOT. MILEAGE @88,000. FORD NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR ISSUES THEY HAVE WITH THEIR VEHICLES. COST TO REPLACE THE RACK AND PINION WAS $2,200!
MY FOCUS WHEN BEING TURNED ON THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS IN PLACE AND DOES NOT WANT TO TURN IN ANY DIRECCION. THIS HAS HAPPEND MULTIPLE OCCASIONS FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS. THE PROBLEM USED TO BE RESOLVED BY TURNIG THE CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON BUT IS NOT THE CASE ANYMORE. THIS LAST TIME THAT IT HAPPEND I WAS IN MOTION COMING TO A STOP SIGN AND IT SEIZED ON ME. LUCKYLY I WAS ALREADY STOPPING OR I COULD HAVE WRECKED. IT TOOK MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS OF TURNING THE ENGINE ON AND OFF TO GET IT TO WORK AGAIN. FOR NOW WE ARE NOT DRIVING THE VEHICLE BECAUSE WE FEEL THAT IT IS DANGEROUS. THE WARINING THAT TURNED ON ON THE DASH READ "STEERING FAULT". THIS CAR IS A 2012 WITH 130 THOUSAND MILES.
MY 16 YEAR OLD WAS DRIVING AND THE STEERING ASSIST FAULT MADE THE STEERING GO OUT FOR HER. THIS PART IS EXTREMELY PRICEY I FEEL THAT AS MANY COMPLAINTS THERE ARE ABOUT THIS PLUS THE HIGH COST THIS SHOULD HAVE A RECALL ON THIS. VERY DANGEROUS
THIS CAR HAS HAD PROBLEMS SINCE PURCHASING IT AS A CERTIFIED USED VEHICLE FOR MY DAUGHTER. THE STEREO WENT OUT COMPLETELY AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN HAVING ISSUES BUT FORD SAYS THE PROBLEM IS NOT BAD ENOUGH WHEN HOOKED UP TO THE COMPUTER FOR IT TO BE REPLACED UNDER THEIR EXTENDED WARRANTY WHICH FORD HAS PUT IN PLACE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY UP TO 100,000 MILES AND 7 YEARS. LASTLY TWICE WHILE MY DAUGHTER WAS STARTING TO DRIVE THE CAR THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP AND BRAKES STOPPED WORKING. THE SECOND TIME THE CAR WAS IN REVERSE AND CONTINUED TO ROLL FORWARD. ITS A GOOD THING SHE KNEW TO USE HER EMERGENCY BRAKE OR SHE COULD HAVE BEEN HURT. THE CAR IS AT THE DEALERSHIP TO BE DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED. NEVER BUYING A FORD AGAIN.
THE POWER STEERING HAS GONE OUT. RESEARCH SHOWS THIS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR. THE CAR WAS STATIONARY AT THE TIME, BUT MID-TRIP. MY SON WAS DRIVING AND HAD DIFFICULTY GETTING HOME.
POWER STEERING ASSIST STOPPED WORKING WHILE DRIVING CAR. STEERING BECAME VERY HARD TO TURN. TOOK TO DEALER, REQUIRED ENTIRE STEERING GEAR TO BE REPLACED.

CALLED CUSTOMER CARE STATING FORD KNEW ABOUT THE ISSUE (2017 DISMISSED LAWSUIT)-- BUT WARRANTY WAS RELIED TO GET OUT OF THE COST RESPONSIBILITY. MILEAGE AROUND 94-96,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO NORRIS FORD (901 MERRITT BLVD, BALTIMORE, MD 21222, (410) 285-0200) WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE STEERING RACK AND PINION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 95,000.

DURING THE FAILURE, THE "STEERING FAULT" MESSAGE DISPLAYED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE LOCAL DEALER (SAN TAN FORD, 1429 E. MOTORPLEX LOOP, GILBERT, AZ) AND THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE, BUT NO ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 117,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER (CAMELBACK FORD, 1330 E CAMELBACK RD, PHOENIX, AZ 85014, (602) 635-7551) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION CLUTCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURES RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO NHTSA. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
OCCASSIONALLY WHEN FIRST STARTING THIS VEHICLE AN ALERT WILL APPEAR ON THE DASH, SAYING POWER STEERING ASSIST HAS FAILED, CONTACT FORD SERVICE DEALER AND THE POWER STEERING WILL NOT WORK. IF I SHUT THE ENGINE OFF AND RESTART THE POWER ASSIST WILL WORK, SO FAR.
