STEERING BECAME SLUGGISH AND PULLED SLIGHTLY TO THE RIGHT. I THOUGHT THAT THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE WAS FLAT. AFTER PULLING OVER THE TIRE WAS NOT FLAT. PROBLEM WAS NOT PRESENT AFTER I HAD STOPPED TO CHECK TIRE. FROM THAT TIME ON WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED THERE WAS AN OCCASIONAL "STICKINESS" TO THE STEERING. ALSO WHILE WHEEL WAS TURNED COMPLETELY TO RIGHT OR LEFT THERE WOULD BE A THUMP AND THEN IT WOULD STICK JUST A BIT BEFORE STEERING NORMALLY. DURING THE LONGEST STRETCH OF THIS TROUBLE I HAD AN APPOINTMENT MADE TO HAVE IT CHECKED BUT IT STOPPED BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT. THEN THIS WEEK AT ABOUT 25 TO 30 MILES AN HOUR IT WAS A VERY NOTICEABLE JERK TO RIGHT AND LEFT WHILE DRIVING STRAIT .GOT TO DESTINATION AND HAD TO BACK INTO A DIFFICULT AREA WHERE MAKING FULL TURNS RIGHT AND LEFT WERE NECESSARY. TURNING FROM ONE COMPLETE...
STEERING BECAME LOCKED AND COULD NOT AVOID HITTING THE MERGING CURB. THIS RESULTED IN BLOWING BOTH TIRES ON THE PASSENGER SIDE AND CHIPPING BOTH RIMS BEYOND REPAIR. WHILE NO ONE WAS INJURED THIS TIME I AM DEFINITELY SURPRISED A RECALL HAS NOT BEEN ISSUED FOR THIS PROBLEM. *TR
SCREECHING IN RACK AND PINION AND LOST ALL POWER STEERING. TOOK FOR DIAGNOSTIC AND WAS TOLD IT WAS THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR EMBEDDED IN THE RACK. ENTIRE RACK HAS TO BE REPLACED. TRUCK IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD WITH 52,000 MILES. NEW RACK AND PINION IS OVER $1500. *TR
THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING LOCK! AND SEND ME TO THE SIDE WALK, THANKS GOD NOBODY WAS THERE. *TR
MY 2011 FORD F150 -WITH ONLY 39000 MILES- HAD A COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE RACK MOUNTED ELECTRIC POWER ASSISTED STEERING MODULE WHICH PROHIBITED IT FROM BEING DRIVEN. THE FAILURE CAUSED AN INCREASE IN STEERING EFFORT (NO POWER ASSIST) OF THE VEHICLE WHICH NEEDED TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. FORTUNATELY, THE VEHICLE WAS NOT BEING DRIVEN AT THAT TIME AND WAS PARKED AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE. IN ADDITION, A DRIVER ALERT WAS OBSERVED THAT INDICATED THAT THE POWER STEERING RACK HAD FAILED AND WARNED TO SERVICE THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO RESET THE SYSTEM BUT THE MESSAGE RETURNED AGAIN AFTER RESTART AND THE POWER STEERING ASSIST WAS NOT FUNCTIONING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE FORD DEALER WHO INDICATED THAT THE POWER STEERING RACK HAD FAILED AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. TOTAL REPLACEMENT COST WAS IN EXCESS OF $1500.00. THE VEHICLE...
LOUD SOUND AND POPPING WHEN TURNING WHEELS SHARP. HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR A WHILE AND HAS GOTTEN WORSE. SERVICE ADVANCE TRAC MESSAGE DISPLAYS AND THEN TURN SIGNALS NO LONGER WORK. EVENTUALLY WARNING WOULD DISAPPEAR BUT WOULD COME BACK ON WHEN TURNING SHARP AGAIN. TOOK IN FOR SERVICE AND PROBLEM BECAME SO BAD THAT VEHICLE WOULD NOT TURN. HAVING TO REPLACE RACK AND PINION. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH AS I STEERED INTO A LEFT HAND CURVE IN THE ROAD WITH THE STEERING WHEEL IN ABOUT THE 10 O'CLOCK POSITION THE STEERING "LOCKED" INTO THAT POSITION. THE VEHICLE FELT AS IF THE WHEELS HAD ENTERED A RUT IN THE ROAD. THE AUTOMATIC RETURN TO CENTER FUNCTION DID NOT WORK AND I HAND TO MANUALLY APPLY FORCE TO BRING THE STEERING WHEEL BACK TO CENTER. THIS MALFUNTION CONTINUED TO OCCUR WHENEVER THE ABOVE CONDITIONS WERE MET. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST STEERING SYSTEM "RACK". FORD IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND HAS A TSB (#11-08-18) IN EFFECT TO ADDRESS IT. THE TSB HAS THE PROBLEM NARROWED DOWN THE THE YEAR, MODEL, PLACE OF MANUFACURE, AND DATE OF MANUFACTURE. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED I WAS DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY ON RAMP TURNING LEFT AND MY STEERING WHEEL STAYED STUCK IN THE TURNED POSITION. MY TRUCK FELT LIKE IT WAS GOING TO FLIP AND THE WHEELS WOULD NOT STRAIGHTEN OUT UNTIL I TURNED THEM BACK. IT HAS ALSO CAUSED MY TRUCK TO PUT UP WARNING ABOUT MY STABILITY CONTROL. WHEN MANEUVERING IN THE PARKING LOT, THE EPAS UNIT FAILED CREATING THE STEERING WHEEL TO BE EXTREMELY HARD TO MOVE. THIS ISSUE WAS SO BAD I COULD NO LONGER DRIVE THE TRUCK BACK DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS. I AM HAVING THE TRUCK TOWED TO THE FORD DEALER TO SEE WHAT THEY CAN DO ABOUT THIS ISSUE. THE SERVICE ADVANCEDTRAC INFORMATION DISPLAY APPEARED ON MY DASH AS WELL AS ELECTRONIC POWERSTEERING ASSIST SYSTEM FAILURE. WHEN TURNING AS FAR RIGHT AS POSSIBLE THE TRUCK WOULD MAKE A REALLY LOUD METAL TO METAL NOISE. THIS TRUCK IS NO LONGER ABLE TO DRIVE SAFELY, HOPEFULLY FORD WILL TAKE ACTION TO FIX THIS ISSUE BEFORE ITS TOO LATE. LUCKILY, THERE WAS NOT AN INCIDENT IN MY CASE. I HAD A REAR SLIDING WINDOW SWITCH REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. I ALSO HAD AN OIL CHANGE AND MY BATTERY TERMINALS CLEANED BY THE DEALERS SERVICE DEPARTMENT. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH, I FOUND THAT THIS IS A VITAL PART IN STEERING FUNCTIONALITY. I ALSO READ THAT IF THIS PART FAILS WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING, THERE IS A SERIOUS RISK OF ACCIDENT. MENTIONED AT NEXT SERVICE APPOINTMENT AND TOLD NOTHING IS WRONG. NOISE GETS INTERMITTENTLY WORSE, BUT DEALERSHIP IS "UNABLE TO REPLICATE PROBLEM" BEFORE THE WARRANTY EXPIRES IN MARCH 2014. IN JULY 2014 (26,000 MILES), THE SAT LIGHT COMES ON WHENEVER THE WHEEL IS FULLY TURNED IN FORWARD, REVERSE, AND PARK, AND A LOUD GRINDING METAL ON METAL SOUND OCCURS. ON THE NIGHT OF DEC 20, 2013, I WAS TRAVELING SOUTH ON I81 NORTH OF SYRACUSE NY. ROAD CONDITIONS WERE NOT VERY GOOD. A BLOCK OF ICE FELL OFF A TRUCK AHEAD OF ME, EVASIVE ACTION WAS NOT POSSIBLE DUE TO ICE AND TRAFFIC VOLUME. THE ICE STRUCK THE ALTERNATOR WHICH IS CLEVERLY POSITIONED ABOUT 10" OFF THE GROUND ON THE LOWER LEFT FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO LOSE ELECTRICAL POWER SYSTEM BY SYSTEM. I CANT RECALL THE EXACT SEQUENCE, AS IT WAS ALL HAPPENING PRETTY FAST. EVENTUALLY, THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING SYSTEM LOST POWER. WHEN THIS HAPPENS ON THIS VEHICLE, YOU LOSE ALL STEERING CAPABILITY. THE SUBJECT PICK UP TRUCK WAS SOUTHBOUND ON I405 BETWEEN ORANGE AVE AND CHERRY AVE IN LONG BEACH CALIFORNIA. THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE FAST LANE OR THE LANE ADJACENT TO THE FAST LANE. SPEED AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT WAS APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH AND THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS ENGAGED. TRAFFIC WAS MODERATE WITH ALL LANES MOVING AT FREEWAY SPEED. WHILE DRIVING WITH A 5,500 POUND CAMP TRAILER IN TOW THE VEHICLE DEVELOPED SIGNIFICANT VIBRATION AND FEED BACK FROM THE ROAD. THE PROBLEM CAME ABOUT AFTER APPROXIMATELY 20K MILES ON THE TRUCK. I WOULD NOTICE IT PRIMARILY OVER JOINTS IN THE ROAD AND ANY ROAD IMPERFECTIONS ALSO NOTICE IT AND HEAR A CLUNKING WHEN OFF ROAD ON DIRT ROADS. THE CLUNKING IS INTERMITTANT BUT IS THERE. I CAN NOTICE BOTH WITH TRAILER AND WITHOUT MORE WHEN TEMPERATURES ARE HIGHER SUCH AS 80 DEGREES OR MORE. NOT SO MUCH WHEN COLD BUT I AM STILL ABLE TO GET ROAD FEEDBACK IN THE STEERING WHEEL AT LOWER TEMPS JUST NOT AS BAD. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 24,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

I HAD MY TRUCK SCHEDULED TO HAVE A LEVELING KIT AND NEW TIRES PUT ON. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE SIMPLE INSTALL MY TRUCK GAVE AN ALERT ON THE INFORMATION SCREEN SAYING "ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST STEERING FAULT. TOOK THE TRUCK DOWN THE ROAD TO NEAREST FORD DEALER AND AFTER THEY RAN DIAGNOSTIC IT SHOWED IT NEEDED A COMPLETE NEW RACK AND PINION. $1278.00 WORTH WITHOUT ALIGNMENT. THE MECHANICS SHOP WHO INSTALLED THE KIT IS GOING TO PAY FOR IT BECAUSE IT WAS FINE BEFORE I TOOK IT TO GET KIT + TIRES, HOWEVER, I HAVE READ NUMEROUS STORIES ONLINE SIMILAR TO MINE THAT SHOW THE EPAS GOING OUT OR THAT THERE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH IT. FORD HAS HAD SEVERAL UPDATES TO THE EPAS MODELS I'M AWARE, HOPEFULLY THE NEW ONE GOING IN WILL WORK AND I WON'T RIDE AWAY ONLY TO HAVE A CLUNKING NOISE TO DEAL WITH IN MY FRONT END...

IT FEELS AS THOUGH SOMETHING IS LOOSE OR WORN-OUT IN THE STEERING OR SUSPENSION. THE DEALERSHIP THAT SOLD THE VEHICLE CHECKED OUT THE TRUCK ON 9/23/2013 AND SAID EVERYTHING IS FINE. THIS IS A GRAVE CONCERN AS A FAILURE IN THE STEERING SYSTEM CAN BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE MAKING A TURN AT APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH, THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS SHUT DOWN AND RESTARTED BUT TO NO AVAIL. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE DRIVEN TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE BY APPLYING EXCESSIVE FORCE TO THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS FOUND THAT THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING MOTOR AND THE RACK & PINION SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.

KNOCKING FELT IN THE STEERING WHEEL. GETS WORSE AS OUTSIDE TEMPS GET ABOVE 80 DEGREES. *TR
WHILE DRIVING THE TRUCK THE STEERING WHEEL BEGINS TO KNOCK, CLUNK AND VIBRATE BADLY, TO A POINT IT BECOMES HARD TO HOLD ONTO THE WHEEL AS THE SENSATION IS OVERLY DISTURBING TO YOUR HANDS. IT FEELS LIKE SOMETHING IS LOOSE IN THE STEERING SYSTEM AND IT CONTINUES TO GET WORSE. HEAT IS A MAJOR COMPONENT. THE HOTTER IT IS OUTSIDE, THE WORSE THE KNOCKING GETS, TO A POINT SOME PLAY CAN BE FELT IN THE STEERING. ON A 90 DEGREE DAY IT IS EASILY REPRODUCED, AND IS STARTING TO EVEN MAKE A KNOCKING SOUND. THIS IS A DANGEROUS ISSUE AS IT CAUSES THE WHEEL TO VIBRATE OUT OF ONES HANDS, OR CAUSES A PERSONS HANDS TO GET TIRED OR COMPENSATING FOR THE PLAY AND KNOCKING AND NEED TO LET GO OF THE WHEEL. DEALERSHIPS WANT TO SAY WE HAVE NOT ADJUSTED TO THE NEW ELECTRONIC STEERING BUT THAT IS ABSURD....
WHEN DRIVING AT LOWER SPEEDS, THERE IS A KNOCKING/ POPPING FEELING THAT IS FELT THROUGH THE STEERING WHEEL. THIS IS BEING GENERATED FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE AND MAKES THE TRUCK FEEL LIKE THE WHEELS ARE GOING TO FALL OFF. THIS SEEMS LIKE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE WHICH FORD NEEDS TO ADDRESS. *TR
TWO ISSUES HERE. FIRST ISSUE. WHEN MAKING TURNS THERE IS A CLUNK SOUND FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE AFTER THE TURN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS RETURNED TO FORWARD POSITION. HAPPENS INTERMITTENT. CANNOT FEEL THE CLUNK IN THE WHEEL, BUT THE SOUND IS LIKE METAL ON METAL. SECOND ISSUE: REAR SUSPENSION CLUNKS AND SQUEAKS A LOT. (LIKE IT IS 20+ YEARS OLD.) STANDING ON THE BUMPER OR PUSHING SIDEWAYS ON THE FENDER MAKES THE REAR-END SQUEAK. I TOOK IT TO FORD FOR REPAIR AND THEY STATED THERE WAS A TECHNOTE THAT TOLD THEM TO 'LUBE' THE REAR LEAF SPRINGS. FOR A FEW MONTHS IT MADE THE SOUND GO AWAY, BUT MADE THE BACKEND FEEL LOOSE OR LIKE IT WAS SLIDING SIDEWAYS ON CORNERS. AT THIS SAME VISIT THE ENGINE PERFORMANCE CHANGED NOTICEABLY. ACCELERATION WAS SMOOTHER AND DID NOT HESITATE AS MUCH. (THEY SAY THEY DID NOTHING THAT WOULD CAUSE...
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 FORD F-150. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE DRIFTED FROM ONE LANE TO ANOTHER. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO CONTROL THE STEERING WHEEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TESTING BUT THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. ONE OF THE TECHNICIANS ADVISED THAT THE STEERING SYSTEM COMPUTER REQUIRED UPDATING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO SEVERAL OTHER INDEPENDENT MECHANICS, ALL OF WHICH ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WAS NOT A STEERING COMPUTER IN THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 45,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
OCCASIONALLY WHEN STEERING THE TRUCK TO THE LEFT, THE STEERING WILL FEEL LIKE IT IS STICKING. IT BECOMES HARD TO TURN TO THE LEFT AND WHEN THE TURN IS COMPLETE, THE VEHICLE WILL NOT RETURN TO CENTER. ON ONE OCCASION WHEN I FIRST STARTED THE TRUCK AND BEGAN TO BACK OUT OF A PARKING PLACE, I COULD NOT TURN THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE LEFT AT ALL. I SHUT THE TRUCK OFF THEN RESTARTED AND THE SAME THING. ON THE SECOND TIME I SHUT THE TRUCK OFF THEN RESTARTED, I COULD TURN THE WHEEL NORMALLY. I HAVE A 2011 FORD F-150 4X4 ECOBOOST AND HAVE HAD ONE STEERING RACK REPLACED ALREADY. IT WAS REPLACED DUE TO POPPING IN THE STEERING AS WELL AS BUMP STEER AND WANDERING.
