2017 FORD EXPLORER Structurebody Problems

The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that she discovered that the side panel trim for the front passenger’s side window was missing from her vehicle upon exiting the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they diagnosed that the adhesive had deteriorated causing the panel to detach from the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact stated that she had read an article regarding the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Left windshield trim suddenly detached while driving on freeway, which presents the risk of flying debris striking other cars; since I was in the left lane during the incident in the middle of Nebraska and it landed in the median, no others were known to be struck. Since the problem was a known issue within a Ford Explorer owner's group on Facebook, I simply ordered a replacement part soon after it happened and did not notify anybody. However, keep in mind that since I had a windshield crack and it was replaced with a new trim panel in December 2022, the replacement part is not available anymore as well.

The dealer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the driver's side front window trim needed to be replaced; however, the replacement part was on backorder. The contact was able to purchase the replacement part online; however, he had to glue it to the front driver's side window due to fractured clips used to secure the window trim in place. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 12,000.

Front drivers side trim piece for windshield flew off going 75mph on interstate. Had it replace and did it again a few months later. Passenger side is loose but has not come off yet.

Windshield trim panel flew off my car while traveling at highway speeds. I was traveling on the highway when suddenly the trim and seal under the trim flew off my car and got caught on my side mirror. I was in the middle of a trip nowhere near a ford dealer and had to tape up my car so that it was protected from the elements. I had to pay hundreds of dollars to fix this problem on my own.

At the end of December 2022, my entire right side of my windshield trim piece flew off on the highway. In addition, my right side passenger applique has come off twice on the highway since summer of 2021. The second one was a replacement and it only lasted less than a year before flying off while on the highway again in the fall of 2022. Pictures attached show the windshield piece completely cracked and flew off taking the seal with it.

Driving from Lubbock Texas home to Carlsbad New Mexico on January 18. Very windy out. At approximately 6:00 pm my wife and I heard a noise like something light hit our windshield. It was dark when we got home and we went to bed. Got up to go to the office in the am and same the drivers side A pillar windshield trim piece missing. Saw that there was a recall for this issued in Dec 2022. Went to the Ford Dealer and they said this vehicle was not in the recall list. Why?

The right side trim piece on the windshield came off while driving and was dangerous for me and my passenger. The whole side is exposed and will most likely leak. The rubber gasket tore after the trim piece came off and was hitting the side window.

Front hood top coat issue. I bought the vehicle in Oct ‘22, and it had a pre-existing issue on the front hood.

The side pillars on both the driver side and front passenger side became loose. There was a definite rattle sound inside the car. Thankfully I noticed it before they flew off and hit another person/car on the highway. This could have led to multiple injuries. When I brought the car back to the dealership they mentioned that this has happened to other cars. Perhaps there needs to be a recall. This only compounds the situation I had in April of 2022. While driving on a highway I suddenly had a rattle in the front window. I discovered that the moulding had rotted and the window was separating. When replaced by the dealership, they told me that they have dealt with this problem numerous times. Is it time to recall and have Ford pay back these expenses?

I WAS DRIVING ON I95 ON FRIDAY AND THE DRIVER LEFT SIDE WINSHIELD OUTER PILLAR OUTER TRIM MOLDING FLEW OFF IN THE WIND VERY HARD. ON SATURDAY I WAS DRIVING ON THE BELTWAY WHEN THE PASSENGER SIDE RIGHT SIDE WINDSHIELD OUTER PILLAR OUTER TRIM MOLDING FEW OFF I WAS SO SCARED BECAUSE I DONT KNOW IF HIT THE WINDSHILED OF THE CAR BEHIND ME. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. NOW BOTH ARE GONE.

I purchased 2 2017 ford explorers and they both developed the same problem . The plastic windshield pillar facia trim breaks off at highway speed. Not only is this a dangerous distraction to the driver, the part flying off at 65 mph becomes a projectile that is a hazard to vehicles following behind. Based on forums, you tube videos, and the availability of aftermarket replacement trim, this would appear to be a wide scale problem.

While driving on the highway the driver side windshield flew off the car into the roadway.

- The weather stripping around my front windshield failed and caused the molding around the windshield to also fail. - This failure occurred while driving at highway speeds. The flying debris alarmed me and could have obstructed my view. It could also have hit another vehicle and caused an accident. - There are instances online of this happening to Ford Explorers. Unknown if it has been inspected by dealers. - My vehicle has not yet been inspected for this defect. - There were no warning lamps or messages/symptoms before this failure. It first appeared on 12/1/2022. My vehicle is a 2017 and at 56000 miles.

Sunroof leaked & water dripped into top center light assembly and down either side of the windshield support frames, then into the back of the plastic panels under them, continuing down the supports that lead to far left & right frames and into the carpet under the rubber mats.Very concerned about water mixing with electrical parts of the lights in the overhead area over the dash & starting a fire.Tried to open sun roof so I could wipe the channels dry and reclose sunroof but the electric components to it stopped working probably due to water damage,so sunroof was now partially opened to the environment. The hood on the vehicle has decay/bubbling. It is most prevalent along the front edge of the hood. I am not sure if this affects the structural integrity, safety worthiness, or latching aspects of the hood. If so, this is a major concern for all owners of this vehicle. I was made aware by another owner of same make and model that this is common occurrence.

Carbon monoxide leaking into my car—tailgate area and through the front hvac. Weird sound from engine that sounds and smells like electrical burning or something overheating.

The windshield trim has flown off of my car twice. It's happened twice bc I repaired and then 3 mos. later it happened again. The 1st time it flew off I was driving home in rush hour traffic in downtown fort worth, tx and it flew off into the oncoming traffic. I could have seriously injured someone or caused a wreck, having car parts flying off at high rates of speed in the middle of a major city.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, there was an abnormally loud sound coming from the vehicle without warning. Upon inspection, the contact discovered that the front passenger pillar trim had detached from the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to a dealer where the pillar trim was replaced; however, a year later, the same pillar trim detached from the vehicle a second time. The dealer was notified of the failure and the contact was given an estimate for a second repair. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and informed her that there were no recalls on the vehicle; the contact was referred to the NHTSA for assistance. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

On May 9, 2022, sometime during my drive on the HE Bailey Turnpike from Lawton Oklahoma to Oklahoma City, the driver side Pillar Trim of my 2017 Explorer came off; I was driving 70-75 miles per hour, and it was very windy. During the drive, I heard a noise but didn't think much about it until I got out of the car in Oklahoma City. Thats when I noticed the driver Pillar Trim missing. Traffic was very light during the drive and to my knowledge, the Pillar Trim did not hit another car or do any damage to anything. If there had been another person or automobile hit by the Pillar Trim, I feel that it could have resulted in an accident or serious injury to a person. Windshield Molding broke off while driving on road. Causing the vehicle behind me to swerve off the road. Damages were done to the other vehicles windshield.

A-Pillar exterior windshield trim became detached from the passenger side at highway speeds without warning and no prior indication of damage. This appears to be a very common issue with this generation of models based on a simple internet search, and I am shocked that Ford Motor Co. is doing nothing to resolve this. The loose piece becomes a hazard to other motor vehicle operators where it could potentially strike a vehicle causing windshield damage, startle an operator causing loss of control, or in the case of motorcycles, injure the operator. Even if it does not strike another vehicle or operator, it becomes road debris and is a safety hazard to other vehicles, and to persons attempting to retrieve it. While we were fortunate that it did not cause any further incident, the potential for a serious accident is high with this defect.

The contact owns a 2017 Ford Explorer. The contact stated that the front side of the roof connected to the upper center of the windshield was severely corroded. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist unless the part was perforated. The contact stated that as the roof became perforated, the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the roof and the windshield needed to be replaced. The dealer sent a diagnostic report with pictures to the manufacturer. The manufacturer advised that they would cover the repair of the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 67,000.

Window trim flew off while driving striking another cars windshield. Causing that driver to swerve.

Driving on Interstate 95 at 70mph, windshield pillar on left side broke away and hit a gentleman on a motorcycle behind me in the face shield of his helmet. I pulled over to apologize profusely. Right side is loose aswell and plastic abs wiper Cowl is dry rotted and flapping making noisy whistling. Under 65K miles. It started at 45K. This is terrifying and now a eyesore. Please investigate this.

Driver door “b pillar” trim 3m stripping peels off allowing trim to catch air underneath and snap in half. $300 replacement piece

The clear trim panels by the driver side door with the electronic numbers to unlock the doors, came off while I was driving on the highway going 70mph. Which resulted in lights going off on on in the cabin of the car, as well as my back tailgate flying open while driving. The clear panel was attached to wires which was reported to me to have caused multiple fuses to be blown one of which was the tailgate door. Once I pulled over to close the door, the door had to be forced closed and the warning light tailgate ajar remained on as well as all the lights in the cabin remained on. Once I was able to park my car none of the lights would turn off once the engine was off and the car would not lock. Both of these panels on the drivers side and passenger side...

The windshield trim piece on the passenger side started making a noise while I was going down the interstate and suddenly flew off. It caught me off guard and almost made me swerve and the car behind me had to swerve it as it landed on the road luckily he was paying attention and didn’t hit anyone else. The whole incident could have ended worse

The windshield gasket along with the door gaskets are all becoming thin and thatching. While driving on he freeway the windshield rubber gasket on the driver side began to flap around as it has apparently lost it's full seal. I noticed much of the rubber gaskets on the door as well are loose and not properly functioning. It appears the rubber used is poor quality as this should not happen on a car that is only 4 years old. I asked the dealership and they indicated it seemed to be normal wear and tear. I can't imagine how this could be normal wear and tear on a car only 4 years old. This problem needs to be looked at as it seems Ford is using an inferior rubber product on its vehicles. This will cause harm especially from the windshield issue.

Pieces of the windshield trim have flown off while driving. The keyless entry door panel is loose and vibrates while driving. Others have said theirs has come off the vehicle while driving. Will be contacting the dealership. Absolutely no warning for this.

All of the plastic trim around my car including the both my passenger and driver side windshield trim molding pieces on the exterior of the car are coming very loose. I'm worried it may become dangerous if they fly off while driving.

Passenger side window trim molding detached while driving on highway. No previous issue with it being loose and no previous problems with trim. If there had been traffic behind or to the side, it could have caused damage to another's vehicle, injury to a person, or caused an accident. I directly went to a Ford dealer. I was told by service person that it is a known issue. I paid for the parts (one on order, as they no longer had all the parts in stock due to replacing other moldings) and was told that I would also have to pay for the installation (separate charge). Upon doing research on the internet I found that this is a known issue to Ford and has been listed for different years the Explorer has been made with this trim molding. If I had known of this issue I would not have purchased...

Trim pieces flying off while driving down highway. Keyless entry trim flew off while driving.

While driving on a public road at approximately 55 mph the passenger side windshield trim piece flew off of my car. Fortunately, the piece did not strike any other vehicles on the road. I am now concerned that the driver's side windshield trim will also fly off while I am driving. At this time, Ford does not have a safety recall for this item. I have received a recall notice for another item. The notice indicates, "On your vehicle, it may be possible for the roof rail covers to become loose or detach from the vehicle". I scheduled an appointment to have this repaired but the service technician told me that they are not able to resolve the issue at this time. Apparently the initial "fix" did not work and Ford is trying to find another solution. These removable parts are a huge safety risk for everyone on the road....

Roof rail came off on drivers side, passenger side is rattling and I'm worried it's going to come off while I'm driving and cause an accident.

THE DOOR DOOR KEYLESS ENTRY PAD BROKE OFF AND FLEW FROM THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. NO PRIOR DAMAGE TO THE KEYPAD/DOOR TRIM PRIOR TO THIS OCCURRING. UPON INSPECTION THE PASSENGER DOOR TRIM (WITHOUT THE KEYPAD) ALSO SEEMS TO BE "LOOSE" AT THE TOP, POTENTIALLY HAVING IT FLY OFF DURING NORMAL USE OF THE VEHICLE. DEALER SAID THAT A RECALL WAS IN PLACE FOR THE DRIVERS SIDE BUT THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. ALTHOUGH, ALL DESCRIPTIONS I COULD FIND SEEM TO HAVE INCLUDED EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO MY VEHICLE.

THE TRIM MOLDING IS COMING OFF THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR AT THE TOP ABOVE THE ELECTRONIC KEYLESS ENTRY TOUCH PAD. AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS IT MAKE A NOISE THAT I CAN HEAR AS I AM DRIVING. I AM AFRAID THAT IT WILL BREAK OFF AND FLY LOOSE IMPACTING ANOTHER VEHICLE.

THE ADHESIVE HOLDING ON THE PANEL COVERING ON THE DRIVER DOOR FAILED. THIS HAPPENED WHILE TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY THE PANEL PRIED LOOSE AND FLAPPED AGAINST THE CAR, CRACKING AND SENDING A CHUNK OF THE PLASTIC COVERING BEHIND INTO TRAFFIC. THIS COULD HAVE HIT A MOTORCYCLIST OR OTHER VEHICLE AND BEEN VERY DANGEROUS. I KNOW THIS CAR HAS ANOTHER RECALL FOR THE ADHESIVE FAILING ON THE ROOF COVERINGS. THIS FAILURE SHOULD ALSO BE FIXED. THE CAR IS A 2017 SO NOT THAT OLD.

DEALER SERVICED MY ROOF RACK 12 DIFFERENT TIME BECAUSE THE COVER WHICH IS APPROXIMATELY 5 FEET LONG HAS BECOME LOOSE 12 SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE MOST RECENT ISSUE WAS THE COMPLETE COVER BLEW OFF THE TOP OF THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE. THE VEHICLES TRAILING ME TOOK EVASIVE MANEUVERS TO AVOID BEING STRUCK BY THE ROOF RACK COVER. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY ORDERED NEW PARTS AGAIN WHICH ARE UNDER RECALL BY FORD. THE ISSUE NOW IS I'M DRIVING THE VEHICLE THAT CURRENTLY HAS A LOUD WHISTLING NOISE THAT STARTS AT 50 MPH AND BECOME SO LOUD IT IS A DISTRACTION ABOVE 60MPH. I CANNOT SAFELY DRIVE THE VEHICLE ON THE INTERSTATE BECAUSE OF THE MISSING ROOF RACK COVER. THE DEALER SAID THEY ARE STILL WEEKS AWAY FROM RECEIVING THE BACK ORDERED PARTS. USED MY REMOTE START AS USUAL, PULLED OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AND AT THE END OF MY STREET I HEARD MY BACK WINDOW BURST. IT LOOKS AS IF IT'S EXPLODED FROM THE INSIDE, AS THE WINDOW IS BOWED OUTWARD.

THE HOUSING FOR THE ANTENNAS AND GPS ON THE TOP OF THE EXPLORER CAME OFF WHILE DRIVING. TWO DIFFERENT FORD SERVICE TECHS SAID THAT IS A KNOWN PROBLEM. WE WILL NOW BE OUT OF POCKET $650 FOR A PROBLEM THEY KNOW ABOUT.

PLASTIC WINDSHIELD MOLDING ON DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE ARE PULLING AWAY FROM THE WINDSHIELD AND ARE NOW LOOSE. ROOF RAILS HAVE STARTED TO PULL AWAY FROM THE ROOF AND ARE WARPING ALONG THE EDGES. THE ROOF RAILS WERE REPLACED WITHIN A MONTH OF ORIGINAL PURCHASE FOR THE SAME ISSUE. PLASTIC MOLDING AT THE DOORS APPEARS TO BE MELTING AND WARPING IN SEVERAL AREAS.

PAINT IN FRONT OF ROOF STARTED BUBBLING DO TO CORROSION FORMING UNDER THE PAINT. FORD WONT COVER IT BECAUSE IT NEEDS TO HAVE A HOLE FOR THEM TO COVER IT.
