> While driving the car, the low oil pressure indicator came on, and within less than a mile later there was a sudden loss of power, engine stalled and then would not start again, requiring the vehicle to be towed off the road and to a repair garage. > Vehicle was immobile on the road putting driver of this vehicle and other vehicles on the road at risk of an accident and injury. > Vehicle originally inspected by non-dealership garage that strongly recommended the vehicle be evaluated by BMW. Vehicle was towed to and has been inspected by BMW Sewickley [XXX] . > Only immediately prior to stall. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The contact owns a 2011 BMW 328I. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds and attempting to slow down, the vehicle started to jerk abnormally, with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer and was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the camshaft adjusting unit was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 106,000.

RE: Recall on 2011 328i Vin# [XXX] I drove the car to run an errand, car was running ok but had a miss. During my drive home, the car stalled. I had to quickly coast to a parking lot in order not to get hit by the car behind me. I tried to restart the car, but it acted as if it needed a jump. Tried to jump the car but it turned over slowly without starting. Ended up getting it towed to Metairie very early the next morning, due to parades. Had a friend of mine, a BMW shop owner, take a look at the car. He told me that he found out that it had a few recalls and he thought that may be the problem. I spoke with a service advisor at BMW dealer that checked the vin and said the recalls would be taken care of...

i took my car in for the vanos bolts recall at a bmw dealership they said they could fix the car.keep in mind i drove the car there just fine and now there saying its gonna cost $3300 to fix my car and its not drivable and idk what to do because im not spending that much money when i took my car in for a recall

The vehicle has been under recall for over a year and the fix is known and takes approximately 4 hours. BMW has had ample time to coordinate a repair, please enforce the repair for the vehicle.
#11628356 |
Nothing has malfunctioned yet on the vehicle, however, these recalls are putting my daughter at risk while driving as there is an air bag and engine recall on the vehicle. Every time we contact the dealership, the recall is still unavailable.

My car has the same issue as other BMW 328i made in 2011. however, when i put the vehicle vin number in my car does not pull up this as a recall. The Camshaft timing bolts are kicking off a check engine light. There is already a recall on this for other cars like mines see campaign 23V707000. Not sure what to do, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had my car towed to BMW Northwest in fife on October 8th to have my recalled fixed for the vanos bolts that can cause engine problems. My car had shut down the day prior I couldn’t drive it. Through October 8 all the way till the 31st I had been in contact with BMW checking on the status of my car .. I have text messages between me and BMW about my car . I was told that 4 vanos bolts broke off into my engine and that bmw couldn’t find them they had to take my engine apart.. Then on October 31 I had got a call from BMW saying that they could not fix the the recall due to sludge on my engine, and that the reason that my engine had shut down was due to power maintenance . My car has all maintained regular oil change...

Recall for 2011 BMW 328i PCV Heater valve was conducted on or around March 12, 2023 at my local BMW private shop Bimmer Engineering located in Lancaster, CA. After service was performed was contacted by BMW representative that this service I paid out of pocket would be reimbursed, but would need to take to BMW dealership to be inspected to ensure BMW part had been replaced properly and with the authorized OME part manufactured by BMW. Vehicle was inspected at the Valencia BMW dealership on or around March 15, 2023 and verified manufactured part was replaced properly. After submitting a claim, letters, and invoices to BMW North America which concluded roughly a year later. I was informed that the reimbursement would not be honored due to recall not affiliated and TREAD ACT does not apply. This information was provided on or around October 11, 2024 by Executive Customer Care Relations...

There is a Voluntary Safety Recalled #23V707 issued for my 2011 BMW 328i that deals with the Vanos Solenoid. My VIN is not included on this recall per website. My check engine light diagnosis shows a vanos solenoid issues. Dealership replaces vanos solenoid. Light comes back on, now the whole unit needs to be replaced. I separately went to a German mechanic and he communicated two times that my issue should be covered under the recall. How is this not associated with the safety recall issued in October 2023? Wouldn’t faulty bolts directly impact the engine and cause the whole unit problems? I feel terrified driving my car as I transport my elderly parents and fear for our safety.

Recall No. 23V-707 information from BMW North America was received in December 2023. No further communication or remedy has been provided by bmw. Per information letter, a compliant can be filed to nhtsa if bmw does not provide a remedy in a timely manner. Since it has been 9 months since this recall was issued and no timely fix from bmw, please follow up on this compliant with bmw. Thank you.

My engine has been giving me trouble and my car is now unsafe to drive. There was factory recall issued for the VANOS system in my engine back in October 2023. The VANOS system is where I am experiencing the problems. It has now been 9 months since the recall was issued and there has yet to be a remedy available. I don't feel that a solution is being found in a timely manner. I am unable to drive my car safely until a remedy is found.

I was driving down the highway when the car started to stall and it sounded like it wanted to shut down. The engine light came on and the airbag light on. I pulled over to the side of the road and the car started jittering and the engine was stalling and making a hit pitch noise. This incident was really dangerous in the highway where sometimes you don’t have enough time to pull over especially with engine problems. I had to pay to tow my car from the high way to my house because the dealership wouldn’t take it in to fix it, they want to charge me for a diagnostic check to see what is wrong with it but my issue is that if I pay for this and they want to charge me for other work and at the end of the day the issue is still happening,...

I received recall notice 23V-707 in December 2023. In January of 2024, less than a month after receiving the notice for recall 23V-707, the SES light came on. The recall letter states that if this happens do not continue to drive your vehicle. You should immediately bring the vehicle in for recall repairs. I contacted my local BMW dealership and was told to bring the vehicle in, but there was nothing they can do at that time and there is nothing they can do at this time. I have contacted BMW's consumer relations department and have been given the same information. There has been no subsequent information or update by BMW. It is now June 2024; I feel this recall has not been handled in a timely matter. Had I brought my vehicle into my local BMW dealer 6 months ago, where would they have stored it, they do not...

My car falls under Safety Recall 23V-707 VANOS. This RECALL came out around October 2023...today we are in June 2024 and BMW has not taken care of this problem yet. Eight months have passed and they still say "no remedy available". Are they taking responsibility if someone has a catastrophic accident while driving these recalled vehicles? Will they pay hospital/funeral expenses if someone gets hurt or die? I am scared of driving my car and had to find alternate transportation thanks to BMW and their ineptitude to take care of this problem in a timely manner.... BTW...they are not covering the expense of the alternate transportation costs.... When will the NHTSA take action to get this fixed? Eight months of waiting are too much already. Thanks.

The engine started stalling and rough riding. Now it will not start. The issue is with one of the recalls that there is no remedy for. I have a car that I cannot drive and that I am still paying for.

BMW issued a recall 10/23/2023 for VANOS Assembly (Engine) Bolts and I have been trying to get my vehicle repaired since January 2, 2024 when my care started having a rough running engine with the Check Engine lamp illuminated and the car was barely maintaining speed on the interstate. I was fearful of having a wreck or being run over by the other cars since my car was not responding to giving it gas to accelerate on the road. I have contacted BMW on 1/2/2024, 4/15/2024, and gain today 5/21/2024 and they are telling me the remedy is still not available. I had Groves Automotive, a certified BMW repair shop, who are my automotive repair shop call for the repair too. My car was just serviced at Groves in the last 3 weeks and passed inspection. The Check Engine warning lamp came on again this morning while driving to work...

The engine has been making some rattle noises like the sound of loose bolts for months now. I have contacted various BMW dealerships in orange county and san diego, and all of them say the same thing: A remedy is not available yet so we cannot help you. Finally today, my "Service Engine Soon" light went on. I did some research and failure of the VANOS bolts can lead to the car stalling at speed, risking a crash! This recall has been open for half a year now, and it seems the remedy is simply to replace those aluminum bolts! PLEASE help me get this through so that I don't end up in an accident or on the side of the road. This is for Recall Campaign No. 23V-707. The recall even states "if there is unusual engine noise, which may include illumination of the check engine or service engine...

THIS VANOS BOLT RECALL HAS BEEN OUT FOR SOME TIME NOW. I CAN'T BELIEVE BOLTS ARE HOLDING THIS UP? I'VE CALLED BMW ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT "THERE IS NO ETA" ON THE PARTS. I DON'T BELIEVE BMW WANTS TO PERFORM THIS RECALL ON A 2011 CAR.
#11582211 |
VANOS related service light has been on for months. BMW refuses to quickly and expeditiously resolve an open recall on said VANOS bolts. Technicians inform me that there are NO open recalls on this vehicle, which is clearly untrue.

Hi. I am filing a report regarding the recall shown below. After several calls to BMW they still have no fix or parts, or an estimate of when they will have anything to adress this recall notice. It's coming up on 6 months since the recall was issued. My Vanos bolts on the exhaust camshaft have failed and my car no longer can drive. Oct 20,2023 Manufacturer Recall Number NA NHTSA Recall Number 23V707 Recall Status Recall Incomplete, remedy not yet available Summary VANOUS BOLTS: The VANOS assembly (engine) bolts may, over time, loosen, and eventually break. If this occurred, a reduced engine power (safe mode) may be activated. In some cases, the engine may not be able to be restarted after switching off and, in rare cases, the engine could stall which could increase the risk of a crash. Safety Risk

BMW issued a recall for VANOS bolts on Oct 20, 2023. Vehicle had service engine soon light illuminate. Vehicle was diagnosed by Tucson BMW as having issue with VANOS bolts shortly before (within a month) recall being issued. At that time car was not repaired-but BMW suggested bolts be replaced at a cost of approximately $6,000. BMW advised car was not safe to drive. BMW had a solution- but wanted to charge for it (as the recall had not yet been issued). Now that recall has been issued BMW seems to be waiting out the clock and hoping owners get rid of the car before they have to repair the vehicle. Also they are now saying we can drive the vehicle until the remedy is available, which directly conflicts with dealers advice when they wanted to charge for the repair. They have not given any indication of time frames. We...

Recently there is a grind/rubbing noise coming from the engine compartment on my vehicle, Ive recieved a SAFETY RECALL notice from BMW in regards to the VANOS bolts coming loose. Notice states that remedy is unavailable, recently visited my local BMW dealership in Milford DE, and was simply told that they cant help. The recall clearly states the possibility of crashing or vehicle not turning on after shutting off. I've also gone ahead and purchased an endoscope and can clearly see that some bolts are loose in my engine, meaning that is only a matter of time before it gets really bad. A remedy is needed now, if the VANOS bolts are not available, simply replace the sprockets assembly( these are available and include the bolts on them). Solution needed ASAP, please help!

vanos bolts my engine is currently roughing very very rough and im sure its due to the recall and its been over 5 months still so solution.

There is a known issue with my vehicles Vanos assembly (bolts). BMW issued recall 23V-707 in October 2023. To date both local dealerships and bmw North America will not make the necessary repairs to the vehicle as they claim parts are not available. My vehicle is sporadically experiencing the issues related to this recall which includes sudden power loss while driving which is a major safety issue. Continued driving could result in complete engine failure. As the vehicle is needed and self cost of repair is cost prohibitive it also leaves owners with no choice but to drive the vehicle.

I currently have my service engine light on because of VANOS issues. I took my vehicle to a BMW service center where I was informed that the issue is because of a faulty VANOS unit that would be fixed when the 'Recall Campaign No. 23V-707' has a remedy to be performed. My registration expired January 1st of this year, but can't get a new one since the vehicle won't pass emissions (I live in Arlington, VA). The BMW service center told me to go to DMV to get a possible emissions waiver. The DMV told me to contact Virginia DEQ. I've been in contact with Vehicle Emissions Compliance Officer trying to receive an emissions waiver. He has told me to reach out to BMW of North America to try to get parts expedited to perform the recall, but they told me that I would have to wait until a remedy...

The contact owned a 2011 BMW 328I. The contact stated that the vehicle was at an independent mechanic having minor body repairs completed; however, while the vehicle was being test driven, the engine caught on fire. The independent mechanic extinguished the fire. The contact was no Police or Fire Department report filed. The contact reported the failure to the dealer. The dealer informed the contact that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V119000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The dealer informed the contact that the VIN was included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and deemed the vehicle a total loss. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

Received letter of recal Dec 2023 For recall Campaign No 23V-707 Is been almost two months and BMW not communicating with me to find solution letter said remedi unavailable Engine bolts may over time loosen and eventually break how they want public to drive like that this should be a priority is dangerous

There is a recall campaign no. 23v-707 Vanos assembly bolts on this car that began with correspondence in December 2023. This is a dangerous situation if the bolts break, therefore I have parked the car upon receipt of the letter. I contacted both BMW of North America and a local dealer in both December and February and they have stated that there is not a remedy for this and have no information as to when one may be available. When contacting BMW, they have me call the dealer, and the dealer recommends that I call BMW. I am concerned with the car sitting for this time period, seals and the like are going to deteriorate and BMW will not cover the cost.

2011 BMW 328i stalled in an intersection, car then started to act bogged down. Waring light came on. I took the car to a mechanic shop where they found a bolt head inside / bottom of our oil pan. I then researched online and found that BMW has a recall for a (Vanos failure sheared bolts/recall). I contacted my local dealership and received a very unwelcomed response to this issue. They told me because another mechanic worked on this vehicle other than a certified BMW mechanic/location that the recall would not be valid. I called BMW customer service line and was told that is not true. It is a safety recall and to try calling another dealership to set up an appointment. Unfortunately, other dealerships won't even call me back to set anything up. It seems no one cares even though we have the proof with this bolt in hand....

i was driving to work and the car stalled in the middle of traffic when i slowed the vehicle down, the idle is rough and all over the place, car is very hesitant to accelerate and vibrates or shakes when approaching any speed. then the check engine light popped on and is still on, i’ve parked the car since the incident to do some research on what the cause could be.
#11565959 |
1) Vehicle idling problem, it automatically accelerate while vehicle is idle and pcv valve problem is very prominent during the winter. 2) Airbag problem, automatically airbag is popping up.
#11565960 |
The contact owns a 2011 BMW 328I. The contact stated that while the vehicle was idling, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact stated that several attempts were needed to restart the vehicle before being able to accelerate forward. The contact stated that while accelerating, the engine was louder than expected while revving. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The air bags warning light was also illuminated. The contact stated that the failure was more persistent during the winter months. The vehicle had been taken to an independent mechanic however, the cause of the failure was not determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been made aware of the failure and it was confirmed that there no recalls associated with the VIN. The failure mileage was 90,000.

I reported this failure to NHTSA at the time of the incident as well. You should have a record of it. The engine failed under the exact circumstances as the recall it's under. Upon inspection our BMW dealer service department determined that our engine experienced extensive damage and would need repairs beyond that of simply replacing the VANOS bolts or mechanism. BMW NA is refusing to repair my vehicle under the guise of the "remedy is not available" it is almost a year that we have been without the use of our car so please instruct them to begin repairs now as the new bolts will surely be available by the time the rest of the engine is either repaired or replaced. Thank you.

NHTSA Recall Number23V707 Recall StatusRecall Incomplete, remedy not yet available. This recall has been open for over 2 months and I can not drive my car since then. When will there be a fix? I cant afford to keep renting a car to wait for this fix.

The contact owns a 2011 BMW 328I. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that a bolt had fractured in the engine. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who replaced the engine. While at the local dealer, the inspector noticed that the mechanic had fractured another bolt. The manufacturer was not notified about the failure. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V707000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The failure mileage was approximately 138,000.

I have an open recall (10/20/23) and called both the BMW Recall Hotline and my local BMW dealer for more information. (East Bay BMW, Pleasanton, CA) The Dealer would not provide the Recall information and the Hotline provided some of this information. Neither could provide me with a timeline for BMW setting a Remedy. Unfortunately my BMW is experiencing some of the symptoms. When can I reasonably expect a Remedy decision? I appreciate your help BTW- I have set up a claim with BMW. Thank you, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Engine is making weird noise and a mechanic told me it’s related to this recall that still has “no remedy” when it should’ve been a recall YEARS ago when the cars first came out and this issue became more apparent. I do not want to keep driving the car I paid hard earned money for just for a manufacturer defect to destroy it

Engine camshaft bolts sheered off inside top of motor , did searching online and found this common problem in certain years and model. Bmw offered a 10 year replacement campaign for faulty bolts and damage they caused. The only problem is mine is beyond that time period as it just happened. similar to many other BMW owners "it happened after the warranty period has ended" even though defective bolts are still causing problems. This should be a simple be a recall with no warranty period , because bolts are defective and still damaging motors.

VANOS Assembly Bolts Broke and engine stalled. Vehicle was taken into dealership two weeks earlier due to check engine light being on. Dealer checked and cleared "check engine errors" and reset and reported that I would need to replace "VANOS Solenoids" intake and exhaust soon so I was told I could drive the car and if the solenoids went out I could still drive the car. two weeks later is when the bolts broke and car stalled and would not restart. At this time I arranged to have the car towed in and after inspecting car I was told that the "VANOS assembly bolts" broke. To better understand the repair I went online and found this. Recall Campaign No. 14V-176: VANOS Assembly Bolts. This is the same issue as the recall so I don't understand why this car or vin was not part of the recall.
#11541033 |
While driving my 2011 BMW 328i, I experienced the engine stalling and would not re-start. I had the vehicle towed to an independent BMW mechanic near my house. It was determined that the VANOS cam shaft bolts sheared and went down into the oil pan. I contacted BMW knowing that there was a previous recall on the VANOS bolt failure (Recall Campaign 14V-176: N51, N52K and N52T Engine – Replace VANOS Gear Bolts) and BMW says that my vehicle is not an affected vehicle although the production year matches and the engine type match.
