The engine loses power unexpectedly, making merging into traffic dangerous. It's intermittent and can't be duplicated under the same conditions every time. There is an open recall for VANOS bolt issues, Recall Campaign 14V-176: N51, N52K and N52T Engine – Replace VANOS Gear Bolts that I believe to be the root issue, but it doens't seem to apply to my VIN. I think this issue is more widespread than the recall addresses.
The serpentine belt ended up behind the crankshaft pulley. As it rotated and shredded, the belt was also penetrating the crankshaft seal. Shreds of rubber along with the seal entered the VANOS system. Rubber filled the oil pan, oil pick up tube was filled with bits of what was the belt. The engine has internal damage from the interception into the timing chain. Independent Service Center The warning light was not present until after stopping, exiting the vehicle, then returning and trying to crank. The oil light, engine light, and red car image (BMW dash light) were thn presented, Doing some research and talking to the shop, it's a far too familiar problem.
I own a 2011 BMW 328i xDrive with a known issue of Vanos bolts being sheered off, which is what just happened to my vehicle. There is only a recall on some of the vehicles and not all. My car is not covered through VIN which is ridiculous because it is a known issue. Upon contacting BMW here in El Paso, TX all they could tell me was my VIN was not covered. Since this issue affects far too many like models from the same time frame, BMW should be held responsible. Now I have to spend $1500 with an indy car shop and I hope we get reimbursed.
I've had my car for less than a year, and started having issues with my engine around cold weather season. I would constantly get a light signal on the dashboard indicating that my engine needs coolant due to it overheating, although my car remained up-kept with coolant and fluids. there were times where I had to stop my car on the road due to an extensive amount of smoke and burning odor coming from the engine compartment, after being serviced a numerous amount of times, the only issue found was in regards to my engine overheating, and supposedly fixed by adding more and more coolant. eventually my engine gave out after taking a short 30 minute trip to my parents home on thanksgiving day. Now that a recall has been placed on my vehicle, I have an understanding that a PCV valve heater malfunction can cause an engine to overheat,...
Vehicle was idling rough. Would periodically accelerate without pressing the gas pedal. It would then go into limp mode. And display Services engine soon light. I took the valve cover off to inspect the camshafts and found the camshaft adjuster gear bolts were all loose. 5 of the 8 bolts were snapped off. 2 of the 5 missing bolt heads were found in the head of the engine 3 were found in the oil pan. If I did not discover the bolts were broken the timing chain could have slipped off causing an accident.
I buy the car in December 02 2022 and the same day a few hours the car engine it's star a sound in the engine. I go to my mechanic and he said don't run the car have problem with the timing belt. I go to de dealer and they said don't worry I pick up and our mechanic check the car but I pay the car but I don't have my car yet. I pay my loan 5 month but I don't have my car back and they don't say nothing.
The engine made noise and then turned off. Would not restart. BMW dealer diagnosed the problem as a failed exhaust camshaft Vanos unit. BMW refuses to repair it even though it the engine, model and year fit the Vanos recall. This is the second BMW vehicle I have owned that failed for this reason, but was outside the covered claimed VIN numbers. I am requesting that you investigate this as wider range of vehicles, fitting the recall description exactly, but not covered, are failing...this vehicle is a 2011 with only 62,000 miles. I would also like a list of the VIN numbers currently affected.
The contact owns a 2011 BMW 328I. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was a rattling sound coming from under the hood. The check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic that the bolts were missing from the exhaust VANOS camshaft unit side and the other bolts had backed out on the intake side and needed to be replaced. The dealer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that no recall existed for VANOS bolts. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the VIN was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 119,000.
Due to this recall other parts of my vehicle are failing and it is frustrating that my vehicle overheats regularly especially when it is hot outside. The recall has been for a year but BMW has not come up with a remedy for this problem. We had to pay $951.67 in 2022 to get our vehicle inspected but they said if the recall was fixed I would not have had the issue I had. Please push BMW to fix this issue.
The camshaft gear bolts on my car broke causing it to stall in a roadway. Upon further investigation BMW did issue a recall for this very well known problem to them however they decided to EXCLUDE the station wagon models. All of these cars have the exact same engine whether its the coupe, sedan, or convertible. All the same exact engine. My car is a station wagon which was excluded. This is a major issue for all owners of these cars. BMW used aluminum bolts in this location and they end up shearing off causing major engine damage. BMW needs to remedy this issue by adding the station wagon cars to the recall. This problem should have been fixed years ago.
My Vehicle has been on Recall since March 2, 2022. There are increasing problems and an occasional smoke and burning smell. This is effecting me getting an inspection and registering my vehicle.
BMW has Recall: #22V-119:407 - POSITIVE CRANKCASE VENTILATION (PCV) VALVE HEATER still open with no remedy in sight. It has been months if not a year already (or longer) and I am waiting, together with thousands of BMW owners to get this issue fixed. It is totally unacceptable that a company as BMW leaves their customers hanging and allowing them to drive unsafe cars due to their laziness to fix this. What is NHTSA going to do about this? Thanks. Happy New Year!
* What component failed: The VANOS gear bolts broken on the 2011 BMW 328i. *How was your safety put at risk? The car will suddenly stall during high speed driving that risk some car will hint from behind or high possibility of lost the control. The car stall and shaking very bad during high speed driving *Has the problem been confirmed by dealer and independent service center. Yes. It was confirmed by dealer and independent service center. There are four broken bolts were discovered on the oil pan. The broken bolts were come from VANOS gear. *The vehicle has inspected by BMW dealer and independent service. *Check Engine light was on. No symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. After failure, the symptom is the car stalls during driving. The attached doc include the recall related to VANOS assembly bolts. However, the BMW refuse to take responsibility for recall...

This car has a heater problem with the PCV that causes the car to not run in cold weather. The PCV fails intermittently and the car will not idle or run in cold weather. BMW issued this recall in March but it is not November and they have offered no fix for this. It is a safety issue and it's also affecting how the car runs. How could we be 8 months into this without a fix?
Recall was issued March 2022. The remedy is still not available.
My 2011 328i convertible has the Vanos Cam shaft bolts broken, and the dealership never said anything about the recall for this issue. When I brought it to their attention they gave me a bill for $800 to find what I told them was wrong with the car. For the 10 years I had the car I have only use one dealership for repairs, and had an additional warranty on my vehicle and NOTHING was said about the bolt heads breaking off on the sprocket cam
The Vanos Cam Tensioners bolts were a known issue (to back out and shear inside of the engine) in my car and a few years prior, and BMW recalled 150,000~ and gave 170,000~ vehicles a 10year unlimited mile warranty on the issue. My car had this issue a month ago and BMW would not help (a year out of the warranty with only 74,000 miles). A BMW dealer diagnosed it and I got it repaired at an independent shop for $5,000+. I’ve seen other people have this issue after the warranty so obviously 10 years was not sufficient. This issue can lead to stalling while driving and rough running. Luckily, I heard the awful noise from my engine before it got worse and could’ve been catastrophic/dangerous. The car did not even have a CEL at the time. This can be a dangerous thing to happen and BMW did not fix...
The bolts for my VANOS adjuster unit failed at approximately 143,000 miles on my 2011 328i xDrive Wagon (chassis code E91). In 2014, BMW issued a recall (campaign No. 14V-176) for this exact issue. On the first page under the "Model" section, it is stated that the E91 chassis is affected. However, on the second page, the E91 chassis is not listed under "Affected Vehicles". When checking the VIN number, my car does not have an open recall regarding this issue. However, the engine equipped in my car is also equipped in other models that are eligible for the recall, and my engine is clearly suffering from the exact failure described by the recall. I request the NHTSA to investigate why BMW did not include my model in this recall, and require BMW to issue the recall for my model.
The VANOS adjustment unit develops an internal oil leakage that will no longer allow the VANOS to adjust quickly enough. This will result in activation of the engine emergency mode and the engine malfunction will become permanently active. BMW Service bulletin that is applicable: SI B11 07 14 Recall Campaign 14V-176 Documentation was inspected by local BMW dealership. They denied the recall due to the VIN not being attached to the Service Bulletin and Recall Campaign. Background: My VIN has motor type N52K and vehicle production is April 2011. The vehicle was running rough and had developed an oil leak from the oil pan gasket. The current service bulletin it states: “Affected Vehicles: This recall involves certain E70, E71, E82, E88, E89, E90, E92, F10 and F25 vehicle’s with the N51, N52K and N52T engines produced from September 2009 to November 2011.”
There is a safety recall on my car. This recall involves an engine component known as the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve heater. The PCV valve heater may not have been produced to specifications which could lead to a short circuit. BMW DOES NOT HAVE AN AVAILABLE REMEDY FOR THIS RECALL AND DOES NOT HAVE ANY TIMELINE FOR FIXING IT.
My 2011 BMW 328i turned off while i was at stop sign at top of the street. My children and I could of died! Car starts but keep shutting off. Smells like its also burning! No remedy available still. Now have no vehicle to drive!!!!!
Unknown my car has been smoking g very bad lately idk if it is cause but this but this recall has never been fixed on my car would like to get looked at
Upon starting my vehicle there is a strong smell of gasoline in the cabin. The car was making a noise that has been diagnosed by a mechanic as engine failure and this vehicle is only 10 years old. This car is my only means of transportation. I need someone to help figure out what to do with it. These cars are too costly to consumers to be just be dead in a year span. There is no possible way the manufacture is unaware of these issues. My car has had a burning smell that could never be located by the dealer. Though it all there are still zero safety lights to point me in any direction.. how can it be possible that something seeming so unstable have no warning lights to give indication that something is wrong with it . I’m just tired of all these entities being able to...
Vehicle started smelling like smoke and making loud screeching noise in February. Took car to BMW certified shop to be fixed, put out thousands of dollars to have valve replaced, check engine light will still not turn off. In April I received a letter from BMW about the a recall on the PVC Valve. It is now July and they just diagnosed a remedy. Called around to every local dealership, they cannot fix it due to lack of parts. It has been over 5 months without having a car. BMW North America is giving me the run around and dealerships keep referring me to call BMW North America. Also have told me that they might not refund me for this since the problem wasn’t fixed even though BMW is at fault.
Received letter in March 2022 about an "Important Safety Recall" for Recall Campaign No. 22V-119: PCV Valve Heater. Letter stated that "Remedy is Unavailable" and "is currently being developed". Manufacturer has not followed up to remedy this safety recall for your vehicle in a timely manner, and per the instructions in the letter, I am filing a complaint with NHTSA.
There was a recall on my vehicle, and I have been without a vehicle since. My vehicle smokes when i try to drive it so, i have been without a vehicle and BMW sent out a notice of this back on March 2, 2022 and they still do not have a resolution. something needs to be done as i am without a vehicle.
My car was brought in to the BMW dealership for knocking noises, a fire smell, and shaking. I was told my car could not be repaired due to engine failure.l was informed that replacing the engine would cost me more than the vehicle is worth. He recommended l sell it for parts. Currently there are no lights/ indicators present on my dash board indicating that something is even wrong . l did not receive any warnings before the shaking and /or during the knocking . On the other hand; I have made multiple complaints to my mechanic about smelling fire or burnt rubber for the past six months and he thought it was coming from the radiator and he replaced it.. The smell did not improve .. he was still in the process of guessing what it could be . I guess we know now. The safety of my family...
The contact owns a 2011 BMW 328i. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the vehicle started smoking from the hood. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the smoke extinguished by itself. The contact drove the vehicle home and called the dealer. The contact drove the vehicle to the dealer but the vehicle was not repaired. The mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacture was not informed of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.
BMW HAS A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE 328XI ABOUT THE PCV VALVE HEATER AND HAD SENT NOTICE OF THE NEED TO REPLACE AND IT HAS BEEN OVER 2 YEARS AND THEY HAVE NOT FOUND A REMEDY FOR THE FIX. THE BMW WARRANTY GROUP CONFIRMED A DATE ON MARCH 7, 2022 FOR THE REPAIR. UPON GOING TO THE HERB CAMBERS IN BROOKLINE, MA. THEY TOLD ME THEY DID NOT HAVE A REMEDY TO FIX THE ISSUE AND WILL CONTACT WHEN THEY HAVE A FIX. ON APRIL 2022 THEY SENT A LETTER STATING THE PCV VALVE HEATER NEEDS TO BE FIXED UNDER (17V-673 / 19V-273) AND THE REMEDY IS UNAVAILABLE AND A NEW REMEDY NEEDS TO BE PERFORMED. ISSUE IS THAT IF THEY DO NOT FIX THE VALVE HEATER THE ENGINE COULD HEAT UP AND COULD CAUSE A FIRE. THEY SAY A REMEDY IS BEING WORKED ON, BUT BMW SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE...
I have a 2011 BMW 328i Sedan, the car has only 50,000 miles on it. No accidents. The VIN number is [XXX] I've been hearing the increased engine noise on my vehicle, then the car engine has stalled while it's stopping in the intersection a couple of days ago. The engine has failed to start after that. I've called my mechanic he removed the engine's valve cover, he found 4 bolts attached to the VANOS adjusting unit have broken off. I checked online it looks like there's a safety recall on these bolts (see the attachment). I visited the BMW service center in San Francisco, they claimed they couldn't find any related safety recall on these bolts and refused to fix the issue. I'm glad that there's no crash or injury during the engine stalled event. These VANOS bolts are clearly not safe. I saw the manufacturer recall these bolts...
The vehicle keeps stalling on the highways and on the streets. We have taken the car in and have towed the car in to the bmw dealership costing us hundreds of dollars on what they think the problem is and it does not fix the issue. They perform a diagnosis and can’t find an issue but the car keeps stalling. The car first starting stalling last year around February.
While I was driving approximately 35 mph the vehicle shut off. Then a check engine light came on. When a code reader was placed on the vehicle a code p0335 for the crankshaft position sensor. Thankfully I was able to coast the car safely to the shoulder of the roadway. Had I been on an interstate highway who knows what the outcome would have been.
Engine Compartment Suddenly Caught Fire and Came into the Vehicle Cabin of my 2011 328i E90 BMW on 12/04/2021 at 10:04 AM PST in the city of Garden Grove, CA. Emergency first responder Captian Rick King of the Garden Grove Fire Department conducted an initial investigation of the cause of the fire due to a defective fuel pump. BMW North America LLC should be held accountable for this accident as it could have cause serious injury or death.
Vehicle stalled with no power while driving highway speed. Engine is locked up and needs to be replaced
The 4 vanos bolts that secure the housing for the variable camshaft timing adjustment (VANOS) unit broke and fell into my oil pan. This has caused oil to leak onto and break the eccentric shaft sensor. This has caused my vehicles engine to loose power. Had this occurred at a faster speed, it could have harmed myself and others on the road. My engines light came on just a few miles before my cars engine had weakened power. I pulled off the road to safety. I had my bmw towed and it is currently at the dealership with an estimated quote of $4963.91 to fix. I’ve had my bmw for less than two years. It’s had one previous owner and no accidents. It only has 64,984 miles. According to the U.S Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, the average highway miles driven per year in 2019 were 14,263. If this...
The contact owns a 2011 BMW 328i. The contact stated that after driving, the vehicle failed to restart without warning. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and was diagnosed that the camshaft housing bolts had sheared off. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the repairs were not covered under the warranty. The contact stated that the failure was like NHTSA campaign number: 14V176000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.
The contact owns a 2011 BMW 328i. The contact stated while driving 40 mph, he heard an abnormal grinding sound coming from the engine before the vehicle inadvertently stalled. The service engine warning light was illuminated. The contact pulled to the side of the roadway and restarted the vehicle and continued driving his residence. The contact stated upon checking the engine, he noticed that the vanos bolts had fractured and were missing from the engine. The dealer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the Vin was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V176000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that the Vin was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 98,000.
It seems that the Bolts holding the Vanos unit intact have come loose or sheared and cause a loud high pitch squealing along with a higher volume in oil loss and this has also cause a seal of some sort or go bad and excess oil burning. Also, the car has a loud tick in the engine now. My vin number is not accepted u der the recall list but my cars make model and year for the credentials along with the problems that the engine continues to have. I would Appreciate it if the company adds this car and it’s vin to the list of recall so i can Have it properly fixed
TIMING CHAIN FAILURE, ENGINE KNOCKING, VANOS BOLT FAILURE
MY ISSUE IS EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN RECALL CAMPAIGN 14V-176, ALSO LISTED AS SI B11 07 14. IT IS A FAULTY VANOS UNIT WITH FAILING BOLTS. MY CAR'S MODEL AND YEAR ARE LISTED IN BOTH OF THESE DOCUMENTS, HOWEVER MY SPECIFIC VIN IS NOT LISTED AS PART OF THE RECALL. MY CAR IS CURRENTLY DAMAGED DUE TO THE VANOS BOLTS SHEARING OFF COMPLETELY AND FALLING INTO THE OIL PAN, AS DESCRIBED EXACTLY IN THE ABOVE RECALL NOTICES. THIS IS THE DIAGNOSIS FROM BMW OF SEATTLE. IT IS VERY CLEAR THAT MY CAR SUFFERS THE SAME FAULTY PART AS LISTED AND SHOULD BE PART OF THE RECALL. I BELIEVE IT IS IN ERROR THAT IT IS NOT. AS IT STANDS, BMW CANNOT HELP ME AND ARE FORCING ME TO PAY OUT OF POCKET. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN TELLS ME THAT MY VIN SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND DOES NOT UNDERSTAND...
CYLINDER HEAD BOLT DETACHMENT FROM FACTORY PRODUCTION CAUSING MASSIVE OIL LEAK ON ENGINE BLOCK. MY VEHICLE RAPIDLY LOST 1 QUART OF OIL IN 2.1 MILES OF DRIVING. WHEN I TOOK IT TO A CERTIFIED BMW SERVICE CENTER, THEY FOUND THAT THE CYLINDER HEAD BOLT WAS COMPLETE SEVERED FROM THE BOLT STEM CAUSING OIL TO SPRAY OUT OF THE ENGINE. THIS DETACHMENT CAUSED OIL TO SPRAY OUT OF THE ENGINE, RAPIDLY DEPLETING OIL FROM THE VEHICLE. THIS OIL SPRAYED RAPIDLY ONTO THE ALTERNATOR, BELT AND OTHER COMPONENTS IN THE ENGINE BAY. THE CERTIFIED BMW MECHANIC STATED THAT THIS ISSUE IS SEEN FREQUENTLY WITH BMW FROM THE FACTORY PRODUCTION METHODS AND TORQUE SPECS IN FACTORY PRODUCTION PROCESS. THE CYLINDER HEAD BOLT BECOMES SEVERED FROM THE BOLT STEM/THREADED PORTION OF THE BOLT (SEE PICTURES INCLUDED). ACCORDING TO CERTIFIED BMW MECHANIC, THIS BOLT WOULD ONLY BE MANIPULATED DURING FACTORY PRODUCTION. I WAS ABLE TO...
RECENTLY I DROVE MY CAR AND THE ENGINE STARTED TO MAKE A HIGH PITCHED NOISE. I SMELLED A GASY BURNING SMELL COMING FROM THE CAR. I BROUGHT IT TO A MECHANIC AND HE SAID BOLTS HAD COME LOSE IN THE ENGINE. I ASKED IF IT WAS SOMETHING I HAD DONE AND HE SAID HE HAD SEEN IT WITH MANY BMW CARS OUT OF NOWHERE.

HE RECOMMEND GASKET REPLACEMENT AT A COST OF $1100 I WROTE LETTER & CALLED BMW CORPORATE USA FOR INVESTIGATION AND RESOLVE THE ISSUE. BUT 1 YR LATER, THEY HAVE NOT RESOLVED THE ISSUE & HAVE USED MY EXPIRED WARRANTY AS REASON FOR NOT LOOKING AT ISSUE. I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS COMMON ISSUE WITH BMW CARS THROUGH MY ONLINE RESEARCH. I WOULD LIKE NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE THESE COMPLAINTS.
