Engine has a rod knock problem at 72,000, miles. Vehicle will likely need a full engine replacement.
A small "knocking" noise was noticed a couple weeks or so ago in my 2018 Honda Odyssey. Noise got progressively worse. Vehicle was taken to the Honda Dealership for assessment/repair. Was notified by a service technician that a rod knock was present on the lower end of the engine and that the engine needed to be replaced. Options were: new engine, used engine, or trade in my vehicle towards purchase of a new one. All maintenance records are meticulous and performed by a certified Honda service department.
This is in relation to Investigation PE25008. The engine in my 2018 Honda Odyssey Elite failed at 91,307 miles due to a connecting rod bearing issue, despite perfect dealership maintenance.
The vehicle started running rough and the check engine light with other error lights were coming on the dashboard display. 1. Engine Failure due to connecting rod/bearings 2. Vehicle ran rough and struggled to start 3. Problem was reproduced and confirmed by dealer (as seen in attached invoice) 4. Vehicle has been inspected 5. No warning lamps or messages prior to incident Sortly after I replaced my engine (per dealer recommendation) Honda released a recall (NHTSA Recall No. : 23V-751) but said that my vehicle was not covered under -- even though it appeared to have the exact same issue as my vehicle... they said that the recall was only for a smaller set for engines produced as a specific manufacturing plant... and I believe that it is likely more wide spread.
Rod bearing knock
Engine knock due to a spun bearing
I own a 2018 Honda Odyssey Elite. While driving to ER for my daughter engine started making weird knocking sounds, when I stopped at a red light to turn left off the interstate Odyssey just died and began to smoke. My daughter and I were advised to get out of the vehicle for safety reasons, due to smoke. There was no warning lights or any other indication that the Odyssey had a problem. 911 was contacted fire and police responded, it was determined that engine reached max temperature. Odyssey was towed to Honda dealer for diagnostics, it was determined that connecting rod bearing was bad and long block needed to be replaced, starter also imploded and needed to be replaced. I contacted manufacturer to ask for a "Goodwill Repair" due to NHTSA Campaign Number 23V751000. Per manufacturer Honda would not offer any assistance for the engine repair even though recall...
My car needs a complete engine replacement due to "rod knock" or "bottom-end failures." It's my understanding that some Honda vehicles were recalled due to this (Recall 23V-751). And that there were other vehicles having issues beyond the scope of this recall (Query RQ24013). I'm disappointed because my Honda mechanic and independent mechanic have cited my impeccable service records and have told me there is nothing more I could have done. This feels fraudulent.
2018 Odyssey EXL engine seized up at 111k miles. There's now a bunch of metal shavings in the oil. The engine will not turn over.
A rattle noise when initially pressing the accelerator pedal. When starting a vehicle, I had to press the start button multiple times. Kept stalling. All the lights on a dashboard started flashing. Saying check engine! We took it to the dealership and they confirmed engine problems. This was their diagnosis: Confirmed concern - found noise coming from engine internally due to CYL NO 2 rod knocking - oil heavily contaminated w/metal particles - recommend engine replacement! Mileage is only 93805.
Engine damage from connecting rod bearing wear. The dealer inspected the vehicle. The dealer confirmed that the damage was caused by a connecting rod bearing. The engine had to be replaced. I was told by the dealer that the VIN did not fall within the recall range. Therefore, I had to pay for the engine replacement myself. The engine damage was the same as the NHTSA ID Number: 23V751000 recall.
My vehicle repeatedly and unexpectedly shifts into neutral while in Drive, causing a sudden loss of power in traffic. This has happened multiple times without any input from me and has nearly caused a crash.
At highway speed on cruise control the engine went out. Van only has 118,000 miles on it.
Summary: Engine seized due to internal bearing failure with metal shavings found in oil filter. Full Description: My 2018 Honda Odyssey experienced a sudden engine failure around 116,500 miles. The dealer confirmed the engine is seized and showed significant metal shavings in the oil filter and pan. I have performed all maintenance according to Honda’s recommended schedule using the correct oil and filters. Honda corporate denied assistance based solely on mileage, even though this issue matches symptoms described in current NHTSA investigation PE25-001 (connecting rod bearing failure in Honda 3.5L V6 engines). There were no prior warnings other than a brief check-engine light and rough running before the engine locked up. The vehicle was in motion at the time and could have caused a hazardous stall, serious injury, or death. Given that Honda has issued recalls for similar rod bearing defects in other model years (2015–2020) and this failure mode...
Recently had the fuel pump recall completed. Within days had intermittent dash emissions light come on then go away. Then a few weeks later, while driving, my odyssey put itself into N and I coasted to a stop. It would not allow me to put the car into P or anything. I had to put the emergency brake on in order to not roll forward. The van at that point would not shift into any gear. It was towed to dealership and I was given the following 2K dollar repair needs. PROBLEM. ADVISE. [Other]: TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE) AND TRANSMISSION SUB-HARNESS Needs replaced.
The contact owns a 2018 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the message "Engine Management System Failure" was displayed on the instrument panel. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle hesitated while depressing the accelerator pedal, with an abnormal clicking sound coming from the vehicle. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic and was informed that there was a failure with the engine and the transmission. The dealer was then notified of the failure and the contact was informed that there were no recalls on the VIN related to the engine or the transmission. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
Short Summary (for “Briefly Describe the Problem”) Sudden catastrophic engine failure — engine threw a rod at ~85,000 miles despite proper maintenance and fluid levels. Detailed Description (for “Provide Details of the Incident”) While driving, the vehicle began making a loud noise similar to a helicopter taking off. I immediately took it to a certified mechanic, who diagnosed that the engine had “thrown a rod,” requiring a full engine replacement. The vehicle has approximately 90,000 miles, has been regularly serviced per manufacturer recommendations, and all fluids were at proper levels at the time of failure. There were no warning lights or prior signs of mechanical issues. My mechanic and I contacted Honda to determine if NHTSA Recall 23V-751 applied to my vehicle; Honda confirmed it did not. Despite this, the symptoms appear consistent with known defects covered by that recall. Honda has declined to provide assistance or repair. The sudden...
I have a 2018 Honda Odyssey, with 66,855 miles. I maintain my vehicle with regularity at my Honda dealership. On [XXX], I was driving home from Las Vegas, NV to Pasadena, CA, when near the state line at Primm, NV, I started hear sounds from my engine and it started losing power. I had to pull over and then had my van towed to a dealership in Las Vegas, NV. The van is available for inspection. The problem has been confirmed by the dealer where i paid for a diagnosis to be performed. The engine light did turn on prior to me noticing the engine problem and a low oil light came on later. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
My 2018 Honda Odyssey (VIN: [XXX]) experienced a catastrophic engine failure due to a spun connecting rod bearing in Cylinder 4. While driving, the engine suddenly began making a loud knocking/tapping noise. I immediately drove the vehicle to the Honda dealer, and as I was pulling into the service bay, the engine completely seized. The dealer confirmed that the engine suffered a spun bearing in Cylinder 4, with severe crankshaft and connecting rod damage. The failed parts and metal debris in the oil system are available for inspection if requested. This failure occurred without any prior warning lights, messages, or check engine indicators. There was no advance notice other than the sudden onset of knocking just before failure. The defect caused loss of engine power and risk of stalling in traffic, which could have easily resulted in a crash or fire. This type of failure is consistent with Honda Recall...
My Van has only 110,000 miles on it. Yesterday I was driving my family home from a sports event my wife myself and my four kids. I got a flashing check engine light and was able to pull over, but it was an unsafe area on the side of the interstate. After sitting there for a while. we were able to get the vehicle to Honda. Honda is telling me that it is bad rod bearings. But that my vehicle falls outside of the recall that is already issued for bad rod bearings in a van that is the same year as mine. This rod bearing issue put myself and my kids in an unsafe position.
I have maintained 2018 Honda Odyssey regularly, getting it serviced when or before it was due. A month ago (at 90K) miles, we started to hear a noise in the engine. I took it to Honda and they said that I need an entirely new (rebuilt) engine. I did see there was a safety recall report 23V-751 regarding crank pins that were produced out of specification. This did cover some 2018 Honda engines, but my VIN was not one of them. Is there any possibility that this deffect could have effected other Honda engines of the same year? My engine should not be failing at 7 years and 90k miles. Currently the vehicle is not being driven until we figure out the best course of action.
The throttle can loose power at stop and then suddenly engine picks up the throttle which not normal and this is not maintenance issue as service station and Honda does not confirm the behavior a defect or a problem. This is very concerning.
The engine stalled while driving the 2018 Honda Odyssey van on the freeway. It happened while cruising on the freeway. Engine suddenly locked out/stalled after a loud 'thug' sound. The situation posed a high safety risk to the occupants. Luckily no vehicular accident occurred. The dealer checked it out and confirmed it is an engine problem. Their recommendation is to change the engine and charged the cost to the owner. Dealer said the problem is not covered by recall. Dealer will not specify the engine problem unless the engine is opened for inspection. There were no warning lamps and messages of the problem prior to the failure.
Engine has been running very rough the last 20k miles, and East Coast Honda in Surfside Beach, SC noted engine bearing wear prior to the rough engine performance during a service visit in May 2023. In June-July 2025 driving on [XXX] driving between Washington D.C. and Surfside Beach, SC, we went to pass and the engine cut RPM's drastically and went into 'limp mode' nearly causing an accident with the sudden decrease in speed. We have asked American Honda Customer Service [800-999-1009] to provide an engine evaluation but they have declined and have stated our VIN is not included in the rod bearing recall/TSB. We did mentioned about the further investigation for 2018 Honda Odyssey's but was advised any action we take would not be compensated since the vehicle is out of warranty by date and mileage (73,000 miles). Several people have told me that they hear a banging or thudding heavy sound coming my 2018 odyssey engine. The sound frequency increases as the engine rpm’s increase. I have seen many reports that state that this symptom could lead to a total engine failure which makes the car unsafe and is caused by incorrectly machined crank shafts (oversized). I called Honda and was told there is no recall at the time ( 8/23/25). In my opinion there should be a recalled. There was not warnings presented. Another failure occurred when mice ate the fuel injector wiring. This caused the engine to malfunction . The cause of this failure I have been told was caused by Honda using wire with a soy based insulation which mice eat.
While driving vehicle, check engine light began to flash. Vehicle was moved safely to side of road and turn off. Vehicle was allowed to sit for more then five minutes and started again. no check engine light or other indicators were illuminated. Vehicle was driven another 60 miles when suddenly multiple warnings appeared with a solid check engine light. Vehicle was moved to a safe location and parked. Vehicle was transported to a Honda dealership the following day and was discovered to have metal in the engine oil due to connecting rod bearing failures with grooves worn in the crankshaft.
Vehicle has a vibrating shake when you go about 26 to 40 miles per hour like it does not know on what gear to be me I took the car multiple times to the dealership, and after charging me hundreds of dollars they had the face to say it is what it is. That the design of the car. I even called the corporate and no one really cared. I am always scarred that engine or transmission will fail and cause an accident. On the last trip, as I was stuck in traffic, stop and go was hard on this condition as car wants to think on what gear to be.
There is a recall on this engine, same year, same make and model, but not my VIN number, same problem as the recall. Honda NHTSA campaign 23V751000 On [XXX] my husband and I were driving from our home in Scottsdale, AZ to Las Vegas, NV. About one hour from Las Vegas a yellow light came on the dash. I immediately pulled off the highway and looked up what the light meant. The manual said to continue to nearest service location and add oil. I restarted the car and there was a very loud clanking sound and a warning of Emissions System Failure came on. I turned the engine off, called AAA and had the vehicle towed to AAA Las Vegas. In the late afternoon of [XXX] they advised us that the car needed a new engine. Also troubling is that Right Honda did not fully evaluate the engine, but charged...
While driving on the highway at speed, without warning or any dash check lights we heard a loud pop from the front of the car followed by white smoke. The engine seized, lost all power, and the along with it the brake system shutdown so the car became uncontrollable on a busy highway. The car was towed to a local honda dealership and is currently being looked at. The vehicle was recently inspected at a honda service center where there was no indication of any engine issues. There were no check engine lights untill the engine seized.
Rod knock diagnosed and confirmed by dealership July 15, 2025. Van is currently at dealership and is available for inspection. I have paused work to allow Honda (case 15705425) and now this team the opportunity to diagnose and inspect first hand. Inspection and first hand visuals have only been completed by certified Honda dealerships. All warnings and my concerns are documented in our ROs with Honda dealerships. When any light or reminder came on, I immediately took the van to Honda for service. Safety: slow starts and sluggish acceleration. Noise that was not normal. Out to eat 30 minutes away from home July 13 and van wouldn’t start. Dealership thought initially battery but then kept van overnight and nod rock confirmed. Also repaired back suspension. Additional details: Problem has been reproduced and confirmed. Have been experiencing slow start, van not driving properly. Our family went out to lunch July 13...
We do not own the vehicle anymore, but I just learned of recalls for this issue and wanted to make sure I submitted this as our lives were significantly affected. In July 2023, on the way home from a trip, we began to hear knocking in the engine and shortly after the check engine light began flashing. We got to the closest mechanic, and they suspected an issue with rods due to metal filings in oil. We had it towed 2 hrs to the closet Honda dealership. Garcia Honda in Albuquerque, NM. After days in a hotel and the dealership making the repairs they thought it was, we were told it was ready to go, they just needed to do a test drive. On the test drive, the engine lights come on again, and on closer inspection, they too heard knocking, and diagnosed engine failure due to rod issues and...
High flow fuel pump failure. Discussed at length with Honda repair shop
I bought a 2018 Honda Odyssey new. When the recall for the fuel pump came out, I had it completed on the emergency basis because it said if you had been experiencing the engine cutting out, to call and get it completed soon. I had had issues with the engine cutting out. Recently, I noticed a loud engine rumbling and rough noise during idling and acceleration. I took it to a Honda dealership, and they diagnosed a failing high-pressure fuel pump that required immediate replacement. There were no warning lights. The most frustrating part is that so many other 2018 Odyssey owners are reporting the exact same issue. It’s all over forums and Reddit — people with Odysseys from around this year are dealing with premature high-pressure fuel pump failures. This is clearly not an isolated case — it's a widespread defect that Honda has yet to acknowledge. While Honda...
While driving Oct-Nov 2023 I noticed a rod knocking sound in the engine and made an appointment with Jones Honda, Lancaster PA for inspection in Dec 2023. While driving to my base in Horsham, PA on [XXX] the engine seized and shut down leaving me stranded with my family. We had it towed to Reedman Toll Honda, Downingtown PA and it was determined by the Honda technicians that it was the same issue that affected thousands of other makes/models of the same year. Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Acura TLX, 2016-2020 Acura MDX, 2016 and 2018-2019 Pilot, 2017 and 2019 Ridgeline, and 2018-2019 Odyssey vehicles. Due to a manufacturing error, the connecting rod bearing in the engine may wear and seize, damaging the engine. A damaged engine may run improperly or stall while driving, increasing the risk of a fire, crash, or injury. The technicians verified...
Check engine light came on while driving and engine making rattling noise. Stopped vehicle and restarted with difficulty starting and loss of engine power. Towed to nearest Honda dealer and diagnosed with cylinder 3 rod bearing damage. Engine replaced under Honda extended warrenty with used engine per warrenty company preference. Called Honda customer service to report the incident. They confirmed my VIN was not included on the recall for vehicles of the same year with similar issues. They confirmed over the phone that they would file a NHTSA report on my behalf, but I have not seen the report on this website.
The Auto Idle Stop system causes the engine to stall or fail to restart after being stopped. The error that comes on sometimes says "Collision Mitigation System Problem" on the dashboard, or sometimes "Transmission Problem. Apply Parking Brake When Parked", but either way it happens when I release the brake to drive again after a stop when the Auto Idle Stop comes on. To fix, I'll have to turn off the car and turn it back on.
I bought a 2018 Honda Odyssey EX-L with around 80,000 miles. Not long after, I noticed a loud engine vibration and rough noise during idling and acceleration. I took it to a Honda dealership, and they diagnosed a failing high-pressure fuel pump that required immediate replacement. There were no warning lights or messages — just a sudden failure. The most frustrating part is that so many other 2018 Odyssey owners are reporting the exact same issue. It’s all over forums and Reddit — people with Odysseys from around this year are dealing with premature high-pressure fuel pump failures, often between 70,000–90,000 miles. This is clearly not an isolated case — it's a widespread defect that Honda has yet to acknowledge. While Honda recalled the low-pressure fuel pump, they’ve ignored the high-pressure pump — even though it presents serious drivability and safety concerns. I was forced to pay $1,273 out-of-pocket at...
My van started making noises and driving weird. Took it in to get checked out. These are the issues found: SAFETY RECALL: 2018-19 ODYSSEY CONNECTING ROD BEARING : 2024-04-19 TSB : ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE:HARD PARTS INTERNAL/MECHANICAL : 2023-11-13 TSB : SAFETY RECALL: 2016-19 MULTI-MODEL CONNECTING ROD BEARING STOP SALE : 2024-03-08 The vehicle is available for inspection at request.
There is a recall on other 18 model year vans for the rod bearing failure. This happened to me on my van and it has had regular oil changes and has around 139000 miles on it. This could have been catastrophic for the ones around me if I was driving on the interstate and the bearing gave out and hurt my family due to the engine seizing. The vehicle has not yet been inspected due to this just happening. I am not the only one with this model year having this issue and my vin not being covered by the existing recall. There were no warnings prior to the issue. Oil was always clean and changed on time. This vehicle has a good history report and records.
Automatic Idle Stop function causes car to stall in the middle of roadways. Idle is initiated when car comes to a complete stop at intersections, traffic lights, etc. Instead of rolling back on, engine stalls and brake seizes up, causing us to block traffic in the middle of roadways, intersections, traffic lights, etc. Car does not restart when power button is pushed. Only solution that has worked is to completely turn car off, open driver door and pretend to be ending trip by getting out, closing the door, walking away so car locks, waiting 30 seconds, then reapproaching the car and starting over from the beginning. This obviously causes major issues in the middle of roadways. On one occasion, no solutions worked, the brake pedal completely seized, and the battery had to be jumpstarted, despite the fact that it was a fairly new and undamaged battery. Problem persists even after...
Engine shut down driving on [XXX] in Colorado just past [XXX] (XXX). Had to pull over and car towed to shop that found engine would not start, locked and could not rotate by hand. They suspect timing may have jumped causing major internal damage to engine, possibly bent valves. Hole found in side of engine block thought to be from cap or other component breaking off. The rod bearings failed causing immediate decreased acceleration on [XXX]. I was going 70ph on the highway. I was fortunate not to have crashed. The dealer confirmed that the rod bearing failure was under safety recall for my exact 2018 odyssey, however, my VIN was no included in the VINs that were eligible for recall. [XXX] There was not any warning light or message prior to the catastrophic engine failure on [XXX]. Honda has denied my case American Honda Motor Co., Inc. Case #: [XXX] despite that fact that the car has been well maintained (records attached) INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Vehicle failed to restart after auto shut off engaged at red light. I was unable to move and had to turn vehicle off completely and restart.
Honda has issued a recall for the 2018-2019 Honda Odyssey vehicles and certain Acura, Pilot, and Ridgeline vehicles due to a manufacturing error on the connecting rod bearing in the engine, which can damage the engine. Might also be in service bulletin 24-003. This recall, identified as #23V751000, was announced on November 12, 2023. MY VIN is not currently covered by this recall yet I am experiencing the exact same symptoms. I have 6 children that a transport in the vehicle daily and we are moving from Minnesota to Georgia soon. I cannot afford to pay for the repairs of this manufacturer defect out of pocket. Local Honda dealership estimates over $10,000 for this repair! I am now going to an automotive service center to see if they have a more affordable solution. It isn't looking good. I am still driving this vehicle, but the knocking coming from the engine...
The car has stalling problems and low power problem (changed 3 batteries in 5 years), took to dealership first time and they could not confirmed what's wrong. The problem became worse and stalled a few times, took to local shop and code p2638 torque management feedback signal came back, indicating problem with transmission or TCU. Then, it was noted that there's a NHTSA RECALL NUMBER:19V-299, specifically "Low voltage situations resulting from loose battery terminal connection(s) or a degraded battery could cause the Transmission Control Unit to reboot and shift the transmission to Park". The recall was on 2018-19 Honda Odyssey, however, my car's VIN is not included, therefore it is not covered. Contacted Honda corporate, they are saying since VIN is not part of the recall, it is not covered. The year, the model and the problem are exactly matches what's in the recall but Honda refuse to cover it...
The contact owns a 2018 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving 30 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and failed to accelerate as intended. The contact stated that an abnormal sound was coming from the engine. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the engine had failed. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the spun rod bearing had fractured, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that on a separate occasion, while diving at 30 MPH around a bend, the Forward Collision Avoidance warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and an unknown part was greased. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.
On this 2018 Honda Odyssey, at 93000 miles, an abnormal noise started to occur under acceleration. Dealer diagnostic indicated the noise is coming from the bottom end of the engine, likely from the rod bearings. The dealer indicated that this specific VIN number is not included in the current Honda recall, however is exhibiting same symptoms.
My 2018 family van purchased brand new. Exclusively serviced at dealer. Immaculately maintained records kept. Driving 70 mph on toll road while driving to dealer for service, car lost power and had to be towed remainder of the way. 100k service done at dealer, 40k miles later car had to be towed back to dealer due to broken rods. Honda says my vin# not effected yet car is inoperable for exact issue with open recall effecting rods. Recall states cars effected produced 2015-2020. Honda offered for us to pay $10k for new engine and they would cover remaining $4k. We do not believe we should get stuck with larger portion of payment when Honda has a known issue with part. Research on line states many more cars affected than the 250,000 initial recall. We appreciate NHTSA’s 2nd probe into this issue.
There is a major safety issue that has happened a few times now. As I come to a stop, or come out of a stop, the engine stutters and completely shuts off. All electronics stop too. Immediately there is a message flashing “right sliding door problem.” I have to put my foot on the brake and restart the engine to get going again. This recently happened as the red light turned green, and a car almost slammed into me from behind.
I took my 2018 Honda Odyssey to the dealership for a fuel pump recall repair. The next day, the engine warning light turned on, and I heard a loud abnormal noise from the high-pressure fuel pump.I scheduled an immediate service appointment. The dealer charged me $230 for a diagnostic but claimed no fault or error code was found. They turned off the warning light without explaining why it was triggered. The abnormal noise from the high-pressure fuel pump persisted, and the dealer recommended replacing the high-pressure fuel pump for $1,942.78 while denying any connection to the recall repair. Component/System That Failed: High-Pressure Fuel Pump Engine Management System How Was Safety Put at Risk? A fuel system failure can cause engine stalling, leading to sudden loss of power while driving and an increased risk of a crash. Has the Problem Been Confirmed by a Dealer? Yes. The dealership acknowledged an abnormal noise...
