WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH ON I-40 EASTBOUND IN EAST TENNESSEE I WENT THROUGH SOME ROUGH PATCHES AND POTHOLES IN THE ROADWAY. THIS RESULTED IN MY STEERING WHEEL BEGIN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY BACK AND FORTH, MAKING IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO HOLD ON TO AND CONTROL. BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF TRAFFIC I WAS ABLE TO QUICKLY APPLY THE BRAKES AND ONCE IT REDUCED SPEED TO ABOUT 30 TO 40, IT STOPPED. DURING THE NEXT 200 MILES IT OCCURRED 3 MORE TIMES. ONCE WHILE DRIVING AT 60 MPH AND GOING OVER A ROUGH PATCH WHERE A BRIDGE AND ROAD MEET, AND TWO OTHER TIMES DUE TO POTHOLES THAT I WAS ABLE TO PREVENT/STOP A FULL BLOWN VIOLENT SHAKING EPISODE BY DRIVING SLOWER AND BEING AWARE OF WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN. HAD I BEEN IN TRAFFIC OR ANYWHERE ELSE IT MIGHT HAVE RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT.

WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE THE SAID VEHICLE HIT A BUMP OR BAD SPOT IN THE ROAD. THE STEERING WHEEL AND FRONT OF VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE AND VIBRATE EXTREMELY ERRATIC. WE HAPPENED TO BE ON A 65MPH HIGHWAY. WITH HAZARD LIGHTS FLASHING WE DID MANAGE TO GET OFF THE MAIN ROAD TO THE SHOULDER. I NEW IMMEDIATELY WHAT IT WAS. MY WIFE WAS WITH ME AT THE TIME AS WELL. WE HAVE OWNED THIS TRUCK SINCE IT WAS BRAND NEW. AT 9000 MILES THE SAME THING HAPPENED. THEN AGAIN AT 16,500, 18,900, 24,440 AND THE MOST RECENT TIME IS 27,500. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN ADDRESSED 4 PRIOR TIMES. EACH TIME THEY CHANGE THE STEERING DAMPER...

I WAS DRIVING DURING MODERATE RAIN AND WET ROAD CONDITIONS. MY TRUCK HIT A SEAM IN ROAD AND THE ENTIRE FRONT END STARTED TO SHAKE AND BOUNCE. I HAD TO GET ON THE BRAKE FAST AND THIS WAS EARLY MORNING LOTS OF SEATTLE TRAFFIC AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 60MPH. WHEN I GOT BACK ON ACCELERATOR, I AGAIN RETURNED TO HIGHWAY SPEED ONLY TO HAVE IT RETURN WORSE AFTER HITTING BUMPS IN THE ROAD. AFTER HAVING THE FORD DEALERSHIP LOOK AT THE VEHICLE 4 SEPARATE TIMES TO TRY AND FIGURE OUT THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM, THE ISSUE STILL HAS NOT BEEN SOLVED. SO FAR THE FIXES TRIED BY THE DEALER HAVE BEEN BALANCING THE TIRES, INSTALLING NEW STEERING DAMPENER, NEW TIE ROD ENDS, NEW DRAG LINK AND TWO SEPARATE ALIGNMENTS.

2017 FORD F-350, TRUCK CAN HIT ANY BUMP IN THE ROAD AND THE STEERING WHEEL GOES CRAZY SHAKING EXTREMELY VIOLENTLY. THIS HAPPENS AT SPEEDS FROM ABOUT 45MPH AND FASTER. THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE SHAKING IS TO IMMEDIATELY PULL OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND SLOW DOWN TO ABOUT 25-30MPH. IT'S VERY HARD TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE WHILE IT'S SHAKING, AS YOU DO NOT HAVE FULL CONTROL OF THE STEERING. A BIG PROBLEM IS THE FACT THAT YOU CAN'T TELL WHICH BUMPS WILL CAUSE THE VIOLENT SHAKING. IT COULD BE A LARGE UNAVOIDABLE POTHOLE, OR IT COULD BE A SMALL CONCRETE JOINT IN AN OTHERWISE VERY SMOOTH FLAT ROAD. I HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED THIS WHEN THERE WERE NO BUMPS IN THE ROAD. ON 9-25-20 MY WIFE AND I WENT TO PICK UP A DESK AT A RESIDENCE 20 MILES FROM OUR HOUSE. AFTER LEAVING THE RESIDENCE I ACCELERATED TO HIGHWAY SPEED 50-60 MPH ON A PAVED TWO-LANE HIGHWAY. WE HIT A ROUGH PATCH, RIPPLED SECTION OF PAVEMENT. THE STEERING WHEEL STARTED SHUTTERING BACK AND FORTH IN MY HANDS AND THE TRUCK STARTING STEERING INTO THE ONCOMING LANE. I HAD NO CONTROL OVER THE VEHICLE, I GRIPPED IT AS HARD AS I COULD WITH NO RESULT TO RETURN THE TRUCK BACK TO THE LANE WE WERE IN. I ALSO WAS PUSHING THE BRAKE PEDAL TRYING TO SLOW THE VEHICLE AT THE SAME TIME, BUT WAS HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME SLOWING DOWN....

MY 2017 FORD F-350 HAS STARTED THE WELL KNOWN (DEATH WOBBLE AT SPEED ABOVE 30 MPH AFTER HITTING SEAMS, REPAIRED HOLES AND POT HOLES. IT BECOMES VERY UNSTABLE AT TIMES ON HIGHWAY. I HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH MY 2008 F-350 CREW CAB 4X4. I GUESS FORD DOESN'T SEE THE VIOLENT SHAKE AS A CONCERN.

EXPERIENCING DEATH WOBBLE. IT CAUSED ME TO LOOSE CONTROL OF THE TRUCK. I HIT UNEVEN PAVEMENT ON THE INTERSTATE, THE WOBBLE BEGAN AND I SPUN 180 WHILE TRAVELING 65MPH ON THE INTERSTATE. AS A COURTESY THE DEALER INSTALLED A STEERING DAMPER ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT STEERING DAMPER MAY CORRECT THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE FAILURE WAS NOT FIXED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 42,588.
