2016 FORD F-150 Back Over Prevention Sensing System Camera Problems

APIM unit and plastic body components 2016 F150, 31,071mi., Sync3 v3.0.20204 Symptoms: Malfunction of the power window controls, radio controls and instrument panel. The APIM also controls many other safety functions, such as rear camera, safety lanes, park assist, backup guides, gps, cruise control, trailer/tow information, and other warnings/features. It is notable that Ford has issued recalls for the APIM due to safety issues in different year F150s, as well as Explorer, Escape, Expedition, Fusion and Lincoln models Navigator and MK2 models, to name a few. This has been reported once, I spoke with a Ford representative and he setup an appointment at the dealership that was to setup an appoint for diagnosis before they setup a repair/replacement appointment. Backup camera not working

The back-up camera on my 2016 Ford F150 does not work after the Sun has been shinning on it for a while and it gets hot. At night or when or when the camera is cool it will work. The problem started sometime in 2019. I have not reported it to a Ford Dealer. I have a Co-worker who has a 2016 Ford Mustang with the same problem.

The contact owns a 2016 Ford F-150. The contact stated that while reversing, the backup camera display was fuzzy. The camera display then went from dim to blank. The backup light was illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was unknown.

The dealer was contacted and informed the contact that the software needed to be reprogrammed. The contact learned of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V151000 (Back Over Prevention) however, neither the VIN nor the year, make, or model was included. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 25,000.

I have been having APIM problems. The screen does several things: 1) occasionally is blacked out, 2) the reverse camera stays on while I'm travelling forward; not in reverse, 3) it's extremely slow to react to changes I want to make to radio stations, change screens, and basically all functions. As I understand it this is a known issue and is quite expensive to repair.

Rear-view backup camera inoperative. Started with broken/fuzzy images with lines then went to blue screen after several weeks. Completely inoperative now. Electrical connections at tailgate have been checked, camera replaced to no avail. Available for inspection if necessary. Safety issue as I can no longer see my front sidewalk when backing into or out of my driveway as children frequently ride scooters up and down the street’s sidewalks. The vehicle has not currently been inspected by anyone for this issue. No warning lamps or messages, just the inoperative display when the camera should be on. Everything else works as intended.

The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the backup camera and vehicle alert system would intermittently malfunction causing a visibility and safety hazard for the driver while in reverse. Also, the defrost system was intermittently faulty. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the failure listed was due to a faulty Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) computer system and the system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 75,000.

The back up camera has been sporadic for over a year, sometimes it is vertical digit multicolor lines, sometimes it is very dark and "over contrasted", sometimes it is a blue screen, and then sometimes it works perfectly. It started last summer, but before I got around to fixing it, winter came and it worked perfectly until spring. There is a recall for 2020 vehicles experiencing the same problems, so where is my justice? I might add, there is a recall on Ford back up cameras and I had to select "other"? I would think if you know there is a problem with a back up camera that it should at least be an option!

TOUCH SCREEN THAT CONTROLS HEATING SYSTEM AND HEATING STEERING WHEEL VERY SLOW TO RESPOND. REAR VIEW CAMERA MALFUNCTIONS. SCREEN GOES BLANK WHEN BACKING UP THEN COME ON AND STAYS ON WHILE GOING FORWARD. BEEN READING ONLINE AND THIS IS ATTRIBUTED TO A FAULTY APIM ACCESSORY PROTOCOL INTERFACE MODULE.

BACK OF CAMERA SCREEN FAILED. WHEN PUTTING TRUCK IN REVERSE THE SCREEN IS BLANK. THIS SAME SCREEN ALSO DISPLAYS THE RADIO, AND IT IS ALSO BLANK. HAPPENS WHEN STATIONARY OR MOVING. AT FIRST THE SCREEN WOULD GO OUT, AND AFTER YOU DROVE THE CAR AND TURNED IT OFF IT WOULD WORK AGAIN. THEN IT STARTED TO GET FUZZY, AND FINALLY IT WENT COMPLETELY OUT. UNSAFE IF BACKING UP UNLESS YOU ARE AWARE THAT THE BACK UP CAMERA SCREEN IS NOT WORKING. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND BROUGHT IT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE DEALER WHEN IT FIRST HAPPEN WHEN UNDER WARRANTY BUT BECAUSE IT WAS NOT FAILING THEY STATED THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM, UNFORTUNATELY FOR ME IT FAILED OUT OF WARRANTY AND I PAID TO HAVE THIS FIX BUT I FEEL OTHERS MAY BE HAVING SIMILAR PROBLEMS. PROBABLY ABOUT 95% OF THE TIME WHEN USING MY BACK UP CAMERA HAS A DISTORTED IMAGE WITH LINES AND COLORS THOUGHT OUT THE WHOLE SCREEN.

FORD HAS JUST RECALLED 700,00 VEHICLES OF VARIOUS 2020 MODELS DUE TO THE REAR-VIEW CAMERA, WHICH FEATURES A CIRCUIT BOARD THAT CAN BE FAULTY RESULTING IN "BLANK OR DISTORTED IMAGES" ON THE SCREEN. I AM SUBMITTING THIS COMPLAINT AS I BELIEVE THIS ISSUE AFFECTS OTHER MODEL YEARS, SPECIFICALLY THE 13TH GENERATION F-150. I HAVE A 2016 F-150 THAT IS EXPERIENCING THE SAME SYMPTOMS AS DESCRIBED IN THE CURRENT RECALL AND OF WHICH I HAVE REVIEWED SEVERAL COMPLAINTS POSTED ACROSS MULTIPLE FORUMS. THIS ISSUE PRESENT A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY CONCERN AS VISIBILITY BEHIND THE VEHICLE IS LOST WHEN THE CAMERA MALFUNCTIONS. I HAVE INCLUDED AN IMAGE OF MY CAMERA WHEN VEHICLE IS PLACED IN REVERSE. I AM REQUESTING THAT THE NHTSA ENCOURAGE FORD TO EXPAND THEIR RECALL TO INCLUDE ALL AFFECTED MODELS AS THEY MUST BE AWARE THE ISSUE IS BROADER THAT WHAT IS BEING COMMUNICATED.
