2015 DODGE JOURNEY Engine Problems

Valve rocker arms and lifters faulty due to inadequate manufacturing, and engine oil cooler/oil filter housing leaking engine oil due to poor quality materials used during manufacturing.

About 3 months ago my check engine light and abs lights are permanently on and I barely have any drive power. I have fixed all possible issues and the lights are both still on and I don’t have much drive power while I drive.

Vehicle has oil cooler leak which plastic oil filter casing and oil cooler adapter cracked and leaked. Oil pooled up on top of engine casing channel below intake plenum and dripped down to electrical connectors that go into transmission. Engine oil heated and smoked because of heated motor and smoke goes into vehicle cabin causing oil smoke film inside with occupants. Oil mist is in the inside windshield and outside windshield along with wipers. There is a recall for this year journey 2015 this year engine 3.6 vet and transmission combination fwd 6spd ;however, the Vin number is not applying to correct the oil cooler and filter replacement under a recall. There is an upgraded part made that does not fail S44 recall; however I had to pay full price for the repair at a dealership and they replaced with the upgraded recalled part. Vehicle has P0740 code of which is a recall on the transmission pump. The recall is S 44 however my vin does not apply even though it’s the same make,model,year, engine and drivetrain as the recall. Please include my Vin number in the recall because the vehicle stalls/ hesitate when the gas pedal is applied and the transmission is trying to downshift when speeding up to change lanes. The situation is dangerous because the driver can lose control of the vehicle when planning to execute and not get a response from the vehicle when accelerating or changing lanes. The contact owned a 2015 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 45 MPH, she observed a burning odor and the vehicle then stalled. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was coasted to the side of the road where she observed smoke and flames from the engine compartment. An unknown driver stopped and used an extinguisher to extinguish the fire but the flames grew too large. The fire department extinguished the fire. A police report was filed. Today while driving on the highway at about 60mph my vehicle lost power causing the car to surge forward. I was unable to steer or brake for several seconds. The gauges completely dropped. It was as if someone had shut the vehicle completely off. The vehicle then restarted on its own. I was nearly rear ended by a semi and am terrified of driving this vehicle anywhere. I did a google search and came across numerous complaints of this happening. No warning lights prior to it happening or afterwards. We have had no issues with this vehicle until this point. It has approximately 90k miles on it.

I have had my car repaired a couple of time for the same issue, and both mechanics have told me that there is a recall on my cylinder 2 engine and the manufacturer was not saying anything which is causing the check engine light to come on and codes reading the same every single time: misfire, spark plugs and gaskets which have all been replaced twice in the 5 years of owning this car. The dealership won't help, if there is a recall or issue with my vehicles I need to know so I can transport my family and I safely back and forth. I see a lot of people complain about the same exact problem I'm facing currently. I'm probably out of about $5k maybe more.

On/about [XXX] I was driving from St. Petersburg, Florida to Winter Park, Florida. I was eastbound on [XXX]. The traffic was heavy and therefore slow. As I was proceeding at about 35 mph, the engine suddenly died. The vehicle became difficult to steer and the brakes felt abnormally difficult to apply. Faulty keyless ignition node

Won't start. Multiple repairs and it still happens. Online forums say it's common on 2009-2017 year models

This was not an overnight thing. The hoses were being exposed to maximum temperatures each time i drove the car. The hoses going from that extreme heat to cold over and over again which caused little air bubbles in the hoses. As time went on the hoses were forming holes on the inside (up til this point there was no warning indication) because of that three hoses burst. Which caused my car to overheat very suddenly to the point my oil temp shot sky high (which was the first warning light saying my oil was over 300 degrees) and my head gasket was blown before i could get off the road. My windows instantly fogged up from the heat which impaired my vision and resulting in me almost hitting another vehicle when seeking safety to see what was wrong. Car's check engine on randomly turned on, lost engine power and steering became hard and had to come to an emergency stop. There was no message for the check engine and a couple tries later the car was able to turn back on and made it back home. Could've been much more dangerous situation had we been on a busy road with nowhere to pull over.

The acceleration stopped, the lightening light, traction light and skid light all came on and would not accelerate. Car was on but no gas pedal in the middle of the highway. Oil was changed a week before and no leaks on ground but oil is low. It is very dangerous as it has done this several times over the last month and has caused me to almost be in several wrecks because speed drops and cars almost rear end me. Have replaced the Crankshaft Position Sensor twice no in a month.

This vehicle has a known design defect with the oil filter housing and cooler assembly. This plastic assembly will crack and leak oil into a valley in the engine compartment and eventually will leak oil over the rest of the engine and onto the floor. Other times it will fail completely and leak a large amount of oil and/or coolant causing engine failure. Repair if this occurs out of the warranty period is over $800US. There are many web sites with this same information and they are all the same cause. Chrysler will not affect repair for this issue unless it is in the warranty period. I have made several attempts to fix the continual misfiring, loss of power while driving performance to no avail. After spending thousands of dollars at the local Dodge dealership(s) and mechanics, I now have a car that is unsafe to drive due to known issues with the 3.6 Pentastar engine. This engine was recalled by Chrysler for years prior to my 2015 year. However, the Dodge cars like my Journey are experiencing the very same problems. I have reached out to my state of consumer department in Georgia. They have referred me to NHTSA as they have declared it a safety issue which outside of their scope.

The engine started racing, but did not show on the Tachometer. No dashboard lights. This problem started this morning (9-19-22). When I put it in gear, it jerks. My car has completely locked up going down the road as in I had gas to go but no power steering nothing overn2nd gear all safety lights came on no brakes and after i got it stopped and turned off it wouldn't turn back on. The vehicle intermittently shakes at about 45-50 MPH. It sounds and feels as if you were going at accelerated speeds over rumble strips. Sometimes this is followed by hard engine thumping. I have noticed during rain and days leading up to rain the issue is more predominant. There are also issues with misfires at idle that is unexplained by several mechanic shops (11 in a matter of 3 years). Because they are unable to recreate any of these issues they are unable to diagnose them. Car Engine Started knocking while driving home from work. No Check Engine Lights or warning Chimes, was not over heating. Car made a loud bang and blew out a puff of smoke. Was stranded along side a busy state route. Was towed to a local garage where they informed me that the engine was blown. They showed me the oil pan which had chunk of metal and pieces of a connecting rod in the pan. This car only had 76,000 miles and we have only had it for not even 6 months. Had an oil change 3 days prior to the failure. I’ve been buying dodge my entire life but this will be the last one. It was the family car so It put us in a tight spot. Cant get another car because we owe over $13,000 on the loan which still will have to be paid.

I was told by Bob Steele Chevrolet that the oil change housing is a known problem and cracking which causes oil leakage

@roughly 87500 miles p0302 error with check engine light and slight vibration felt. Replaced all plugs + all coils no effect. additional research found known flaw in earlier years ref: service bulletin and extended warranty (X56) - 3.6L Left Cylinder Head - Select 2011 -2013 Vehicle. Called car manufacturer they referred to dealer saying warranty not extended for 15 year. Dealer states still known issue but cant help roughly 3800 out of pocket to fix. or we can contact FCA to beg them to fix. FCA referred back to dealer. You are my next step.

In 2/2021 After having dealership replace thermostat and front brakes/rotors, I got my car back and then the same day the ABS, Traction control and ABS lights were on the dash, so I returned to dealership, resulting in full corrosion on the wiring harness repair from water leakage and anti lock brake module replacement. Now in late Sept (less than 3000 miles later) the ABS, traction control and Service AWD light on the dash AGAIN and dealership said it niw needs ABS sensor replaced, the module had water in the ABS module. This is a safety issue with disables ABS and ESC disabled. This appears to be related to other similar complaints and Chrysler recall R61 for 2015 Dodge Journeys, but not showing up for my VIN.

While driving the steering wheel locked up and the brakes stopped working, the engine was still running. Breaks were extremely hard to press and was not able to turn the steering wheel at all. Was able to coast to a stop and place the car in park. Once I stopped I placed the car in park, turned off the car and restarted it and worked fine.

I noticed that my heater hose looked like it had some crusted coolant around the Tee joint. I looked closer and realized that the Tee joint appeared to be cracked on both bottom left and right side of the joint. I literally just grabbed it and it fell apart. OIL FILTER ADAPTER HOUSING IS LEAKING. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD BY DEALERSHIP, THIS IS A NATIONWIDE ISSUE AND THE PART IS ON BACK ORDER FOR UP TO 4 MONTHS OR LONGER. AND WAS TOLD BY DEALERSHIP VEHICLE CANNOT BE DRIVEN.

I OWN A 2015 DODGE JOURNEY 63000 MILES. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON A MAJOR STREET TRAVELING 49MPH THE CAR JERKED, DEACCELERATED ABRUPTLY AND THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME TIGHT. TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID IT WAS "FAILED CRANK POSITION SENSOR." IT HAD A CODE OF P0339. WE PAID DEALER TO FIX IT - OBVIOUSLY. I NOTICED THERE IS A RECALL FOR CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR ON 2016 DODGE JOURNEY - I BEG THAT YOU RECALL CANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR FOR DODGE JOURNEY 2015.

THE CAR SHUT OFF ANYWHERE AND ALL THE TIME HAS ALMOST BEEN KILLED BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE

POWER SURGING OR FUEL SURGING DURING ACCELERATING. WHEN I TRY TO GET UP TO SPEED IT IS LIKE IT CUTS OUT ON FUEL AND SURGES.

MY WIFE'S CAR HAS STALLED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE RUNNING IN TRAFFIC AT 55 MPH AND ABOVE. SHE EASILY COULD HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN A COLLISION. CAR HAS BEEN TO DEALER 4 TIMES FOR REPAIR, BUT STILL HAS SAME PROBLEM. CAR HAS UNDER 60K MILES.

P0339 CRANK SHAFT POSITION SENSOR INTERMITTED MY ENGINE COMPLETELY LOST POWER. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. THIS IS A RECALL ON THIS CRANK SHAFT ON 2012-2016 MODELS FOR DODGE JOURNEY. I WAS DRIVING ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET GOING 35 MPH AND MY CAR STALLED AND THE ENGINE LOST COMPLETE POWER.

DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE MY JOURNEY JUST 'SHUT DOWN.' ONCE GETTING IT TO A SHOP THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE ENGINE WAS PROBABLY THE CAUSE. THE VEHICLE IS AT 119,323 MILES AND DROPPED A CYLINDER RESULTING IN HAVING TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE ENGINE.

MY VEHICLE HAS ABOUT 124,000 MILES ON IT. OUT OF THE BLUE ONE DAY IT STARTED SPUTTERING. I FIGURED IT NEEDED A TUNE UP SO I TOOK IT IN AND THEY TOLD ME I NEEDED TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER. IT HAS TO DO WITH THE SIXTH CYLINDER MISFIRING. I TOOK IT IN MARCH AND THEY HAVE HAD THE CAR EVER SINCE. THEY HAVE NO PARTS TO FIX IT AND TOLD ME THAT IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THAT VEHICLE AFTER 100,000 MILES. THEY HAVE CONTACTED CHRYSLER TO MAKE THE PARTS FOR IT. *TR

THEY SAID IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP, HAD IT REPLACED BUT CAR WOULD START AND IT TURN OFF LESS THEN 5MIN. CARMAX SUGGESTED TAKING TO DODGE DEALERSHIP FOR ENGINE TARE DOWN TO FIND OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT.
