EGR valve failed while driving on the freeway. Loss power. Check engine light on. Propulsion power reduced. It is safety and emissions related.
#11611633 |
The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve has failed, which causes issues with the fuel propulsion system, can cause the cooling system to fail, and affects the emissions system. We are unable to obtain a replacement valve anywhere and have been on a waiting list at the dealership for months. The car is not safe to drive in this condition.

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled with the message “Gasoline Engine not Available” displayed. The vehicle was restarted; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the EGR valve had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

While driving my 2017 Chevy Volt on the highway, a “Propulsion power is reduced” message appeared accompanied by the CEL. Prior to this there had been no indication that anything was wrong. The warning was quite vague and it wasn’t at all clear what it actually meant so I continued driving. Shortly after this, I began to notice a bit of a “chuggle” or lurching sensation (particularly on hills). This made the acceleration slightly unpredictable, and at one point even triggered the forward collision warning when the car accelerated a bit after I took my foot off the gas pedal (coming up behind another car at a traffic light). I pulled over and attempted to figure out what the issue was. I had a notice regarding the BECM recall in my glove box which listed a reduced power mode as a potential symptom, so I scheduled a service appointment (figuring...

While making a 90 mile drive on 7/20, after having depleted the primary battery charge and switched to hybrid mode, a "propulsion power is reduced" warning appeared on the console, along with the Check Engine Light. Other than somewhat reduced power (max displayed of ~40-50 kW), performance otherwise seemed unimpeded. Contacted local dealership to schedule service for earliest available date of 7/26. Car made return 90 mile trip on 7/21 without issue additional issue ("propulsion power is reduced" message remained.) Service identified "numerous codes", but replaced a fuse known to result in the above issue and observed no other issues. Car was driven purely on battery at that time, and for the intervening time until a 170 mile drive on 8/2, where the message and Check Engine Light reappeared, again after battery charge was consumed and car switched to hybrid power mode. Dealership was again contacted to schedule service, slated...

10 months ago, I took my vehicle in to the local chevy dealership because the check engine light was on and I had noticed the vehicle seemed to be running rough. I had also seen a message that said the vehicle was running at reduced propulsion. The dealership told me I had a shorted EGR valve which also cause fuse 3 to blow and ordered the part. Then I waited. My vehicle stopped running on the road once. Just died. I had no battery charge remaining either. That was a safety issue for me and anyone who might hit my car because it was on the road. I sat there for a while and then tried to start it. I wasn't far from home and was able to limp home. I waited for months, contacted the Chevy/GM manufacturer and kept in contact with the dealership. Over the next 10 months...

[XXX], while driving on [XXX], check engine light came on with reduced propulsion warning. Continued driving to destination without incidence. Did not drive again until [XXX]. [XXX] while driving using "hold" method of propulsion using internal combustion engine, check engine light remained on, after the engine warmed up, all of the sudden, there was a noticeable reduction of power, followed shortly by the internal combustion engine shutting off while I was entering onto an interstate highway ramp. Fortunately I was able to pull off to the side of the road and back down the ramp without incidence and return home under grossly reduced battery propulsion. July 8, took vehicle to Chevrolet dealership (Baierl Chevrolet, Wexford PA) under battery power. Was told ECM module was bad. ECM module was replaced, error codes cleared, vehicle ran as expected. after driving approximately 50 miles, check engine light with reduced propulsion warning returned. Turned...

I was driving down the highway at normal speeds when I noticed the engine temperature began climbing out of the blue, and eventually the CEL light came on before the dashboard read "Propulsion Power Reduced" and eventually the engine stopped entirely and I had to coast to an area on the side of the highway where I could pull over. The battery-only part of the car was drained but there was plenty of gas in the tank, so my only way out was via the ICE. I turned the car off, waited for it to cool down, then turned it back on, only for the same issue to occur within another couple of miles of highway driving. I had to repeat this process until I was able to get to an exit and coast to a business that would let me recharge the battery enough to drive on battery-only where...

Driving at highway speeds, check engine light came on with a warning of "reduced propulsion power" and sudden loss of speed in heavy traffic. Dealer diagnosed issue as failed EGR valve but is unable to source repair part due to frequency of failure causing years-long backorder.

On a recent trip on a highway on our 2017 Chevy Volt, the Exhaust Gas Recirculation [EGR] failed and caused "low propulsion" errors. We ended up with a surprise bill of more than a thousand dollars to replace the EGR cooler assembly, but the problem was not resolved. The dealership then said we need to replace the EGR Valve which is estimated above $2700 plus labor. Upon checking the GM-Volt users community this is a reoccurring issue on several thousands of vehicles and the inflated price is due to the fact that GM redesigned the EGR valve to fix their original faulty design. We as consumers shouldn't be responsible for such an outrageous cost and mainly safety due to a design flow by GM. This issue should warrant a recall by GM to fix the issue once and for all.

EGR valve fails causing vehicle to become disabled in traffic or stranded on a remote section of the highway. Also fails emissions testing. Chevrolet has NO REPLACEMENT parts available.
#11592562 |
While driving down the highway a "reduced propulsion" message appeared on the dashboard and the drive became very rough if speed changed, also the engine temperature increased but it did not overheat before we could stop. This was diagnosed as an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve failure. I spoke to multiple dealers and did research online as well and this is a very common issue on this vehicle. So common that the part is impossible to get and has an eight month wait which means I cannot drive my vehicle. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? EGR Valve How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? My car had reduced propulsion, engine temperature increased and it suddenly lost speed quickly on highway when my foot was removed from gas pedal. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed...

Driving at freeway speeds when suddenly the cars propulsion power failed and I went from 75mph to 45mph with no warning and no way to accelerate. Happened multiple times even after pulling over and turning the car on and off. I was told by the dealership that was a gas engine part and that I could drive it on the electrical engine only. When attempting to drive on the electrical engine, I received a notice of engine failure and had to coast into the driveway of a dealership. I was told the engine “could explode” if I continue to drive it

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated while her son was driving approximately 55 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that the battery system became inoperable. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the cells and battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer informed the contact that parts were on backorder. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The failure mileage was approximately 69,000.
#11588409 |
Check Engine light came on codes indicate the EGR and EGR cooling components have failed and a Propulsion Power Is Reduced message is displayed. Max speed at this point in 10 mph. This would be my second time replacing the EGR valve if the parts were available but they are not and there is no anticipated delivery date. The parts are covered in CARB states (those that have adopted California's emission rules) but not my state of NC.

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the next morning when he attempted to start the vehicle, the vehicle made an abnormally loud sound. The contact shifted into reverse and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The vehicle was diagnosed with a battery malfunction. The vehicle was repaired; however, the check engine warning light remained illuminated. The contact related the failure to Manufacturer Communication Number: 10251431 (Electrical System) and TSB Number: N232422680 (Special Coverage Battery Energy Control Module Malfunction). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included. The failure mileage was approximately 142,974.

My service engine light came on. After that happened, my engine started to get hot. It got up to 230degF, received a reduced propulsion message and wanted to shut down when going 70mph on the interstate (depended on the construction). Quick reaction on my side before the engine shut down I had "held" the battery (which i do for long trips to ensure options in event of emergencies). Meaning i still had energy in the battery that could be used to propel the vehicle. I was able to shut down the engine by unholding the battery before losing control of the vehicle due to no propulsion. The electric propulsion took over and I could get off the freeway. Conditions were: I was driving in a rain storm on a very busy interstate around Eau Claire wisconsin right around 5-6pm with lots of road construction. If I would have lost the...

Had to replace EGR valve after losing power on the highway back in 2022. Lost power steering and reduced engine power while driving at highway speeds, luckily was able to get off the highway and limp the car back to my house. I almost crashed due to loosing engine power and power steering. It's appears to be a BECM issue.

We bought the car for our son when he began to drive. We liked the idea that it was gas and electric. At the time, our son was into electric vehicles. At 44, 000 miles, 7/10/20 the car was taken to the dealership. The engine light was on at this point, the message displayed "Propulsion Power is Reduced". Once the diagnostic was done it was said that the EGR valve needed replacing. Of course, this is during the of COVID. Everything was shut down. No one is working. It is now a wait game. Prior to this our Chevy Volt has been in and out of the dealership with either recall or something else. We enjoy the car because of how it operates with gas and electric. Fast forward it is 80,000 miles now, and the car is at the dealership again. It has currently been there for almost a...

EGR Valve failed and blew fuse while I was on road. I do have the part for inspection if necessary. Part failure caused reduced propulsion in traffic on interstate. Due to GM not manufacturing part, I had to order a refurbished part from China so I could get it put in and use my vehicle after 3 months of waiting for OEM part to come in. Component has not been inspected by anyone, outside of mechanic who would have replaced it. No warnings or symptoms of issue were observed before the part failed.

On 2/11/23, our 2017 Chevrolet Volt displayed a check engine light and the engine started to overheat, as determined by the driver from the dash coolant temperate display, while driving down the interstate after 1 hour of driving. The car was pulled over to the side of the road and towed home. Upon inspection of the Chevy Volt later, the F03 15 amp mini-fuse(referred to as non-walk home fuse) in the main engine fuse block had blown, which had likely caused the electronically controlled thermostat to close and the engine to quickly overheat, due to lack of coolant. The reason why the F03 15 amp mini-fuse blew is because the control board for the EGR valve catastrophically failed and overloaded the fuse of this important shared electrical circuit. The electronic thermostat is part of this shared circuit, in addition to the EGR valve and possibly other important vehicle functions. I...

On [XXX] my 2017 Chevrolet Volt with just 24,000 miles on it suddenly jerked/lost power/revved up while on the highway while using the gas engine--frightening/dangerous -- and continued to do that until I got to my destination. The error read "reduced propulsion". I was afraid of pulling off the highway for fear the car wouldn't restart and I had my 91 yr old mother in the car so we bucked along in the slow lane, the car revving fast, then losing power. It was very frightening and i proceeded with the flashers on. Took car to dealership balise in warwick ri. Tech said it was a bad EGR valve. They told me that GM would cover the repair under warranty but the part was on backorder. I opted to leave the car at the dealership hoping for the best but they said another customer had been waiting since September. They...

On Christmas day, 12/25/2023 my EGR valve failed about 60 miles from home blowing my F3 fuse and putting the car into walk home mode. Luckily after some quick searching i was able to self diagnose the EGR valve as the problem as this appears to be a frequent problem with this model of car. Lots of posts online. I replaced the fuse and unplugged the valve and was able to get my vehicle home. Jan 6th 2024 a dealer confirmed the diagnosis and confirmed it as a warranty repair. Stated since the car was drivable (ev mode) i could bring it home until the part came in since it was back ordered. It has been 66 days since the diagnosis, 13 since my safety inspection expired taking my vehicle off the road due to the check engine light on. Working with both the dealer and GM directly, neither have...

WE WERE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC. THE BATTERY HAD PLENTY OF CHARGE. SUDDENLY, THERE WAS A WARNING NOTICE ABOUT PROPULSION POWER PROBLEM AND THE CAR CONVERTED TO GASOLINE MODE. WE CONTINUED TO DESTINATION AND PARKED. WHEN WE WENT TO START THE CAR, IT WOULD NOT START AT ALL. HAD CAR TOWED TO OUR LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP (ALL SERVICE DONE THERE) AND THAT IS WHERE IT IS STILL SITTING. THE PART NEEDED (BATTERY) IS ON BACK ORDER. THIS OCCURRED ON JULY 21, 2023. TODAY IS MARCH 13, 2024! AS OF TODAY....APPROACHING 250 DAYS SITTING IN THE DEALERSHIP OPEN LOT,

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The contact stated that the vehicle was restarted but stalled again after driving for several miles. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the EGR belt needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,382.

I purchased my chevy volt on 8/17/2022. Early to mid November 2022 the check engine light appeared on the dash. It was determined the EGR valve needed to be replaced. I took the vehicle to Ferman Chevy Tampa on 11/21/2022. They replaced the EGR valve and we paid $1346.07 for the work completed. Then late December 2022 - Early January 2023 the check engine light appeared once again on the dash. It was determined that the EGR valve placed in the vehicle was a faulty part and the volt needed a new EGR valve. We waited approximately 1 month for the repair. Early November 2023 the check engine light came on once again. After inspection it was determined that once again a faulty EGR valve was placed in the vehicle. This is the 3rd time the same issue has occurred in a year. Today is Monday 2/26/2024 and volt has...

Sudden failure of exhaust gas recirculation valve resulted in unexpected significant power loss on limited access highway and immediate loss of speed and acceleration. Driver was able to move to side of road with care and proceed in "limp home" mode. No warning lights activated prior to this event. Event could have been catastrophic if it occurred during heavy traffic conditions. Occupants could have been trapped in vehicle stuck in left or middle lane with no way to safely merge into oncoming high speed traffic. Car is available for inspection. GM dealer has provided the diagnosis of repair and suggested replacement of ERG valve and ERG valve cooler. This is a known defect and GM is unable to provide timely delivery of replacement parts. Waiting period of up to six months was predicted by GM dealer. Driver reports posted on internet forums reflect many Volt drivers reporting these same events...

Recall work was performed by dealer for EVAP pipe. Insulative repair was used because pipe had not worn through. This was advised to me from dealer that performed recall work. June 2023 took vehicle to dealer due to check engine light being on. Was advised that insulation that was applied to resolve recall had "slipped" causing EVAP to develop a hole and was needing to be replaced at this point. Opened case with GM with no resolution due to failed recall work. Did not feel I should be responsible for labor due to failure of their recall fix.

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle failed to restart. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the engine valves. The vehicle was not repaired due to parts not being available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 84,000.

I was traveling at 75 mph with the cruise control on when a message came on about reduced purpulsion. My vehicle lost all power and rapidly decreased speed, the gas pedal did nothing until my speed had dropped under 60 mph. I was on the freeway and could have caused an accident. Chevrolet says a programming update was needed to fix the problem but my BECM is now also out.
#11569029 |
BECM failure on car confirmed at 128,000 miles. While driving the car's check engine light came on; immediately followed by a message of reduced propulsion and the EV range dropping to 0. Vehicle switched to gas and ran very rough for a short distance to an available stop. Have been informed by dealership that the vehicle is now unsafe for driving due to a potential stall.
#11569137 |
Driving on the road with a near full electric battery and then lost most of my power and got this message on the dash along with a check engine light. "Propulsion Power is Reduced" - I was in freeway traffic on a hill and had to put hazards on to move to the slow lane. Engine came on and seemed to be revving to full power to maintain speed.
#11567845 |
Vehicle lost power on highway and on local streets. “Propulsion power reduced” warning. Car brought to dealer 7/2023. EGR valve ordered at that time. The EGR valve has not been available since that time. No time frame for availability has been given.

While we were driving on the freeway, we saw a check engine light and “propulsion power is reduced” message. The car began driving very roughly and we had to slow down. We had this happen once before where the car engine stopped working entirely while driving at city speeds after seeing this error earlier in the summer, so we pulled over as soon as we could. We were traveling in a remote area at the time, just before the holidays, and it was fairly cold out. The car dealer inspected the car and told us it was unsafe to drive, that we could not take it back until it was fixed, and that it was an EGR valve problem. We previously had this fixed under warranty as well for similar behavior, and the car is barely five years old with very few miles on it. It’s our only car and...

Upon starting vehicle and shifting to drive, vehicle gives message to "shift to park" and will do nothing else. Also, while battery is fully charged, vehicle will display "unable to charge" and show no mileage left on EV mode - then at times (but not always) upon starting vehicle, mileage increases to what it expected.

The Volts BECM has failed. There are warning lights constantly warning about Engine and low Propulsion. There are multiple symptoms. Most serious is that car has stalled while driving 3 times. If I pull over, put in park, then turn off; I can restart the engine using battery mode. It does not drive well in gas mode where gas fuels generator to charge battery for propulsion. It is now very loud and often won't allow you to drive faster than 30 MPH. The mileage diagnostics (MPG) are just over 50% of what they were before problem started. It often randomly switches from battery mode to gas. This is undesired. My problem is that the only certified tech is on other side of Island Volcano. I have no confidence that I can drive it to dealer, given the distance and power required to climb mountain. So, I am stuck with no...

My Chevy Volt has been having spotty pop-ups stating that "Propulsion Power is Reduced" for about a month, but I was not sure how reliable the pop-up was as there were plenty of days the pop-up would not come on when starting the car. On the day of my incident in October 2023, I once again received the "Propulsion Power is Reduced" pop-up when I started my car. While driving, I stopped at a stoplight, and my battery drained. When the battery is drained, I usually don't have anything to worry about, as the Volt is an EV hybrid, and I can use the gas until I can charge my vehicle again. But the Check Engine Light came on when the battery drained this time. When the light became green, I started to drive like normal, but I suddenly got a pop-up on the screen regarding the engine no longer...

Loss of Motive Power due to EGR Valve. I was driving down the highway when I experienced a loss of motive power and the Volt entered a reduced power state while in moving traffic. After the EV battery ran out and the ICE turned on, the following message showed up on the instrument panel "Propulsion Power Is Reduced" and the check engine light turned on. The Volt slowed down and would not accelerate to the speed of the moving traffic. I was able to get off the highway and drive home under reduced power which was still not safe. The engine ran very rough on the way home and was not able to maintain speed high enough for the flow of traffic on the roads. The dealer diagnosed the issues as a failed EGR Valve. The part was on backorder for about a month. In that time, a GM trained...

The latest episode with my 2017 Chevy Volt is a culmination of years of issues with the low clearance on the vehicle causing continual damage and unsafe driving conditions that require expensive repairs due to the design flaw (note - I had a 2014 Chevy Volt that had NONE of these problems). My son was driving the car a week ago and the Engine Control Module (GM part # 12700116) fell OUT of the car. This led to the car to stop driving instantly - if he had been anywhere other than a quiet residential street it could have been catastrophic. Upon having towed the vehicle to the dealership, I was informed that the wiring harness failed which led to the ECM falling onto the street. I drive this car strictly in city limits and on major highways, and despite this the bottom undercarriage is constantly damaged because it is...

so we inspected your vehicle and it needs a battery module, that part is on back order and we have no ETA when it will come in. That is what the dealership sent me. There are people on Chevy Volt forums saying it's the EGR valve and they've been waiting months with non-working cars. Is anyone doing their job around here?
#11560414 |
EGR failure can cause the car to become immediately inoperable w/ no propulsion due to fuse pop. EGR required to pass emissions regulations but none are available.
#11559657 |
While driving to work, the vehicle shook a bit and entered into "reduced propulsion mode". The vehicle had a significant reduction in engine power on the road (the propulsion became very jerky), which became dangerous on the highway. There were no previous indicators of any type of issue. After brining the vehicle to the dealership, I was told it would be okay to drive until my appointment (which was scheduled for the subsequent week). Two days later, the vehicle would not start. When attempting to start the car, the "Shift to Park" message displayed. I had to get the vehicle towed to the dealership at that point. The dealership mentioned it is likely an issue with the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM). However, I'm still waiting for a resolution.

Around the tenth of November my car, a 2017 Premier Volt bought used, began to display an information message that the propulsion power is reduces. It displayed 0 mi EV range, even though I knew I had some left. When I started to drive the engine seemed louder than usual and the check engine light was on. I pulled into a parking lot, and checked under the hood just to make sure nothing was obviously smoking or sparking. I turned the car on and off, and drove around the parking lot a few times until it resumed normal functionality, however the check engine light remained. This was after dark, when I got off work, and I drive home on Highway 49. I did not want to drive it home on the highway in the dark until the issue seemed resolved. Since the manual claimed that if I see both reduced...

On 2 separate time periods, "propulsion power reduced" message appears on dash: - 1st incident in November 2022, car would not move after powering off the vehicle. After sitting idle for a week, decided to retry, and car seemed to work normally. Took it in to Chevy service, they replaced the BECM. Car worked fine after this - 2nd incident in November 2023, again 'propulsion power reduced' message appeared. This time, however, car would suddenly cut off gas engine (even at highway speed), switching to 100% battery mode, and displaying 'Engine not available' on dashboard. Fuel level indicator would immediately display 'LOW' (even though gas tank was full). Reduced acceleration on battery mode. Car is now in same service center awaiting fix for the past month. Was quite an unsafe situation, especially at highway speeds, and especially given the fact that the battery also may have been at a low...

I was driving on the freeway and the engine turned off. I was able to continue driving as the hybrid system still had some charge to continue powering the car. I had to get the EGR valve replaced. No warning lights prior to this occuring but had check engine light after. Car would not shift into drive nor would it accept a charge for the main drive battery. Had to be towed to a shop and resulted in getting the Battery Energy Control Module (BECM) replaced.
#11558332 |
1. 2 BECM failures: The original BECM failed and the replacement BECM failed as well. 2. Sudden loss of electric propulsion on the freeway while my wife (pregnant at the time), my son (1 year and a half) and I were driving. The car was still driving but was unstable when steering and with weak braking. The dealership identified the issue as BECM failure and the part was changed. 3. A couple of months later the car would not start at all leaving me stranded at work. The car was towed to the repair shop. The dealership diagnosed BECM failure again. 4. There was no warning indication or message prior to these issues. 5. The vehicle was only inspected by the dealership to the best of my knowledge.

Sometimes when the vehicle powers on, it will not engage to drive in gas or electric mode when fully charged or with a full gas tank. Also sometimes while driving, it will say "gas mode not available propulsion limited". It frequently says "charging not available" as well. This is an on going, intermittent, problem.
#11558204 |
My Volt will suddenly lose propulsion. The air conditioner will stop working and the car will not properly accelerate. There has also been multiple occasion where the car will not power on. Additionally, there has been multiple occasions where the car won’t charge. The failed component is most likely the battery engine control module. My safety and that of others is at risk because of the sudden loss of power and inability to maintain highway speeds. The issue was confirmed at the dealer. The check engine light goes on even after erasing codes, and there are 13 permanent codes related to this issue with no direct resolution. This is a recurring problem.

Car intermittantly lost propultion while driving. this started happening more and more frequently. One time driving on the freeway propulsion cut out and I barely made it to the side of the road. Put the car in park and it would start again. Drive for a few hundred feet then it would cut out again. Finally took it into the dealer when I was driving down the highway and propulsion cut out and I was stuck in the middle of traffic. As I was driving the instrument cluster power remained on but the engine just cut out. I was using the electric motor at the time but this is happened on the ice as well. As I rolled to a stop in the middle of traffic I put it in park so that I could restart the car as I had been able to previously but it would not start....
