I am reporting a series of safety concerns regarding my 2017 Chevy Volt, which have persisted despite multiple attempts to address them with the dealership. These issues pose significant risks to my safety and that of others on the road. On January 18th, 2024, I brought my vehicle to the dealer after experiencing reduced propulsion power while driving on the highway, coupled with the illumination of the check engine light. The mechanic performed a quick inspection and used a GM scan tool to diagnose the issue, revealing the code P1E00 for the Hybrid Powertrain Control Module 2, which was cleared without a thorough investigation. I was advised to return if the issue reoccurred. Despite the reset, the problem persisted, and on February 9th, 2024, I scheduled another appointment due to my Chevy Volt's High Voltage battery charging only to 65% capacity despite indicating a full charge. Subsequently, on February 11th,...

Several years ago, when I was driving the vehicle, I got a sudden "reduced propulsion alert" and the onboard coolant temperature gauge showed a significant spike in temperature. To avoid overheating, I had to pull over on the side of the highway. In the onboard fuse box, there was a blown F3 fuse. I replaced the fuse and the same issue happened again last year. After some online research, it is clear that the EGR valve failed. Unplugging the valve and replacing the fuse has returned the vehicle to normal operations, but it's now out of compliance with local emissions regulations. GM has failed to properly produce replacement parts. As of Feb 11, 2026, a local GM dealer in Bloomington, IN quoted a backorder and unclear wait time on a replacement part and quoted me at $2,000+ just for the part. If not for my quick thinking, this part failure...

EGR valve and EGR cooler failure. Engine power was reduced and EGR fuse kept blowing. Has code for EGR flow failure/restriction. Check engine light remains on even when reset
#11692401 |
My EGR system caused a check engine light. P0401 This is an extremely well documented issue on Gen2 Volts, especially 2017 models. Simply searching "EGR" on the Volt subreddit or forums returns hundreds of related threads. This issue can lead to a clogged EGR valve, causing further damage. A temporary resolution is unplugging the EGR valve, which i have not yet done. But this leaves the CEL illuminated, and without daily scanner, I wouls not know if other issues arise, causing a significant safety hazard.

EGR Valve failed in this vehicle <55,000 miles. The EGR valve has an electronic component that, when fails, can cause the car to shut down by blowing the "walk home" fuse. This is a safety issue. This is a well documented problem (internet) and Chevrolet refuses to fix it, leaving the owners with an expensive replacement quoted at $3900 (Sept 2025). Recommend that it be covered by the emissions warranty, which was recently extended to 150,000 miles and 8 years for other problematic emissions components. An electric vehicle that cannot be driven because an EGR valve is faulty - it's a joke.

Thousands of 2014-2017 Chevy Volt owners are having issues where the EGR Valve malfunctions and the engine shuts down. The Volt's EGR valve can cause the car to shut down by blowing the "walk home" fuse. This is a safety issue. In many cases cars are in the shop for months because the part is on "backorder". That's my situation-- dealer just told me it's a $2800 repair job, but the part is on "backorder". The car only has 49K miles. My 2017 Chevrolet Volt is experiencing "a malfunction involving the battery energy control module (BECM)" as diagnosed by the Davis-Moore dealership. This failure of the BECM has now caused "a reduced power mode, a no start condition, or a no charge condition". The car currently does not start or charge. My vehicle has be diagnosed as needing a BECM replacement at a Chevrolet dealership. The vehicle is currently inoperable as it will not charge, it will not engage the electric drive mode, and it will not engage the range extender (engine). The car does not start. GM is showing that there is no active recall or special warranty for my vehicle, however, I believe special warranty N23243268 should apply.

I was driving my car from Houston to Dallas when I got the "reduced propulsion" message and a check engine light. When I first saw the reduced propulsion issue I thought it might be related to the BECM issue again since I had already experienced that problem before. In the last few minutes of my trip the AC started to get hot and when I checked the coolant temperature I noticed it was around 240 - 255 F. I hadn't noticed it since there was no warning light for high temperature which I am used to with other cars. I'm not sure of the full extent of the issues yet, but I know for certain that the EGR valve has failed completely at about 71,500 miles. This is with very few miles on the actual ICE. I typically only use the ICE for a few hundred miles of driving each...

EGR Valve stop functioning, which caused Service not available engine check light on. This is a hybrid plugin, when battery is low, it is dangerous is Gas Engine not functioning. This EGR Valve is super expensive, the fix (Parts and Labor) is over $3300. The car milage was only a little over 58800 miles. Without getting this repaired, the emission inspection will not be passed in Virginia.

My experience required me to tow my 2017 Chevy Volt from a parking garage, where the BECM died, to 2 different dealerships back and forth to my home. I have been charged over $1,000 in towing and diagnostics at my local dealerships. As usual they informed that I need a new $10k battery. I did my own research and the error codes (U2603, U2604, U2605, U2606, U2617, U2618, U2619, U2620, U2621, U2622, U2623, U2624 and P1E00) clearly indicate that my BECM failed. I was able to check the health and status of the traction battery and it functioning correctly. On my 3rd trip to my local dealership service department with the Special Coverage Program N232432680 in hand, the dealership informed me that yes my BCM had failed and there was a Special Coverage Program for 2016-2019 Chevy Volts, but that MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT COVERED. There were a limited...

While driving the vehicle, the car shut down. Thankfully I was coming to a yield at a round about after exiting the Interstate. I was finally able to get it to restart and proceeded on my way. If this had happened on the Interstate myself, and other drivers would be at risk due to unassisted steering and braking. I also have experienced intermittent periods of "Reduction of Power" while on the interstate and other 55MPH plus highways. This presents a hazard to myself and other drivers as well. These issues ARE covered for similar vehicles under Special Warranty Coverage N232432680 as required by NHTSA on March 6, 2024. My vehicle also exhibits all of the primary symptoms described in that coverage, but GM claims that my vehicle is NOT covered. CEL is on. Can't charge condition Reduced power No start condition

My 2017 Volt reported a "Propulsion Power is Reduced" message on the display. When I took the car to the dealership for service, they stated that a new EGR valve was needed. The part alone is $1847. The total service with labor would have been over $3000. Looking online, it is a very common issue for the gen 2 Volts. Unfortunately, the dealership is saying this repair is not covered under warranty.

There is a part that fails on a lot of GM vehicles due to getting clogged (an EGR valve). It prevents the vehicle from reaching high speeds on the highway and can fail while driving (which happened to me). I could have lost control of the vehicle on the highway and crashed or gotten rear-ended. GM refuses to pay for repairs involving this part despite so many people reporting the issue that they needed to do another production run of the part after discontinuing it. Here are many others that experienced this problem: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

There was a recall for the HPCM2 where the propulsion power reduced warning would come on whenever the car's cell battery was depleted. This happened with my car and there were several times it slowed on the freeway and on exit ramps as I tried to safely get my car off the road. It first happened on 4/13/25. I took my car to a regular mechanic who charged me 3k of repairs on basic maintenance, new tires, etc but were unable to fix this issue. They advised it was a manufacturer issue and to go to a hybrid specialist or a dealership. I called a hybrid specialist who found the faulty code and advised the same. I took my car to Felix Chevrolet (3330 S. Figueroa St. LA, CA 90007) and they offered to do many maintenance service items that I had done earlier this week in an attempt to...

My Chevy Volt went into Reduced Propulsion System Power Mode, the Engine light came on and the vehicle stalled while sitting at a traffic light on [XXX] at [XXX] in Tyler Texas. Checking the computer and the complaints online I found that my 15 AMP #03 fuse (No Walk Home) had blown. I replaced the fuse and the next day on [XXX] the same thing happened again after driving 30 miles. The vehicle stalled at an intersection outside of Tyler Texas. The EGR Valve is known to cause the fuse to blow, so I had no choice but to unplug the EGR Valve and replaced the fuse and has not blown the fuse since. This is BOTH a safety issue and an emissions issue, but the replacement part cannot be found anywhere to purchase anymore so I am having to drive this vehicle with this ongoing safety issue. Due to...

My car needs an Egr valve replacement and this is a known and common problem with this car and now they are trying to charge me outrageous prices for an issue that they know is defective. The becm , the Egr valve, and the shift to park. need to be recognized as recalls

On December 2023 the vehicle lost power and lost control while driving speed limit 55 Mph followed by check engine light associated codes due to known issue with BCEM controller failing. June 2024 Vehicle experienced the same issue with duplicate check engine codes associated with prior issue. Dealer states the vehicle has a bad battery pack and has been there for over 8 months. Vehicle has a BECM warranty due to a law suite filed and also has a battery pack warranty from GM that was extended for 150,000 miles or 10 years.

Battery Energy Control Module failed and left my daughter stranded.
#11645145 |
Yes this vehicle can be made ready for inspection upon request. According to the registered Chevrolet dealership who inspected my vehicle and gave me the diagnosis - The cars EGR valve control board is shorting out Fuse #3 which leads the car to enter “reduced propulsion mode” and keeps you from using the generator engine due to being in this mode. This happened as I was driving home from work one day and the car notified me of this issue and entering into this mode. This could leave people stranded if low on battery charge, or in danger due to reduced propulsion. Chevy no longer manufactures this unique EGR valve and thus the repair requires obtaining back ordered parts from a manufacturer outside of the US for thousands of dollars. Alternatively you can drive without the EGR power cord connected, which means greater emissions and environmental risk/damage. This is not...

The EGR valve failed. This caused the vehicle to have insufficient propulsion while driving. The dealer has confirmed the EGR valve is the problem. The vehicle is at the dealership. The check engine light came on. The dealer is now stating the replacement EGR valve is a $4000 part because GM stopped making the part when they discontinued the Volt. An EGR valve should cost $250-$400 not $4000. The current trade-in value of my vehicle is only $7000. I cannot get my vehicle fixed due to the cost and the vehicle is too dangerous to drive due to the power loss issues.
#11641741 |
The car has a Check Engine Light and "reduced propulsion" warning. Based on OBDII errors, the EGR on my chevy volt failed. I am not in a CARB state (i'm in Hawaii, though I bought my Volt in CA, which is a CARB state). The EGR issues plague all Gen2 Chevy Volts, and tends to break around 40-70k miles into the life of the car. EGR spare part availability is very limited. Given the frequency with which this car breaks for this issue, and the negative impact on emissions, this should be a recall issue nationwide, not just for states that keep CARB requirements.

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the vehicle failed to start. The contact stated that the message “Unable to Charge” was displayed with the check engine warning light illuminated. The local dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000.

I was driving at about 50mph all of a sudden I got a propulsion error and my car stopped working it had no power! People had to swerve around me and I was almost hit. My car would not drive I shut it off and back on multiple times. Finally it started but would not go above 25 it was so scary. I went to the dealership they said it’s known issue since 2016 and that my miles were too high so it would not be covered to fix the total amount it almost 3,000 this seems unfair that Chevy would continue to sell a vehicle knowing it had issues with a energy control module and not fix it for free. Especially when you could be killed while driving it!!
#11636544 |
My car's check engine light went on and after a while started blinking. The car would not go. When I got it towed and checked by the dealership, they said my EGR Valve had an issue and needed to be replaced. They said the part was on backorder and it could take months and tried to charge me $2,000 up front to "reserve the part." It seems like GM has deprioritized this part and is putting drivers like myself at risk of not being able to use our cars and not being able to pass emissions inspections required in my state. This was originally diagnosed in spring 2024 and I have been unable to get a replacement as of January 2025

This is a safety issue for Chevy Volt. After seven years of good operation, our 2017 Chevrolet Volt stopped running in traffic while we were driving on [XXX]. The Check Engine Light was on, and "Reduced Propulsion" Message on dashboard panel. We brought it to the dealer from whom we purchased the vehicle. Tech Report paraphrased, Customer states CK Engine Light is on and "Reduced Propulsion" Message on dash Fault Codes: P0030, P0031, P0054, P0135, P0403, P0405, P0443, P0458, P0489, P0597, P0598, P06DA, P06DB Found fuse [F03] blown for EGR valve Likely EGR Valve sticking and causing fuse to blow. The technician stated the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve is defective, and needs to be replaced. Replacements are scarce, on backorder, and can be many weeks or months to wait for a part. Many report their Volt unusable, sitting idle, waiting for EGR replacement. EGR valve replacement cost is quoted...

My car stopped all of a sudden and lost power while my wife was driving. She could've been in a major accident since the car lost power. This has happened a few times in the past. Luckily she wasn't on the freeway or she could've been rear ended at highway speeds. There were warning lamps that said check engine and "Lost Propulsion". This should be looked at closely as my safety as well as the safety of others was at risk. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION! I had my car towed to the nearest auto repair shop where it is being looked at.
#11629322 |
The vehicle tells me to "stop and shift to park" while I am driving, and power was lost to accessories such as the climate control. Since the EGR was identified as the cause of the problem, the car remains on "Propulsion Power Reduced" mode. The EGR has been backordered for months, if not years, and aftermarket third-party EGR valves are not readily available either. However, there is no recall, and this is clearly a common problem on these vehicles as attested on GM-Volt forums. The EGR failed about one year ago, but now the message on reduced propulsion power is presented every time I start the vehicle.

Vehicle went to low power mode on the interstate (I4) and was unable to drive at normal safe speeds. Engine overheated and would not allow vehicle to drive over about 10 mph, had to drive slowly on interstate until I could pull off safely to let it cool and get towed home. Technicians verified it is the known EGR valve issue, which happens often and isnt covered under any warranty. From research online this is a common problem that strands people in Volts and GM wont fix and cant even get more parts for to repair vehicle. Can leave people with sudden power loss while driving and limit driving speeds to unsafe levels unexpectedly.
#11627678 |
The EGR valve failed and has been on order for over 6 months. I unplugged it to keep the car operational, but it will not pass an environmental inspection without a new valve. THIS IS A VERY COMMON COMPLAINT ON ONLINE FORUMS. Something needs to happen to force GM to resolve this issue.
#11622133 |
While operating my Chevy Volt on a Los Angeles Freeway, warning lights came on informing me to park immediately, and that the power propulsion was reduced. The Check Engine light also came on. At that point the “Shift to Park” message came on. My car is experiencing the “Shift to Park” issue. I already had this happen previously in 2023. The repair cost $1,200. There are many, many references to this issue on the Internet. The “Shift to Park” defect is well known in the Chevy Volt community. When this happened the SECOND time, ([XXX]), I was stranded on the side of an LA freeway. The car will not start. It will cycle through the “Shift to Park” message on the dashboard and it will not go anywhere. The car initializes, so there is power in the vehicle, but no propulsion. In what appears to be (based on Google search) hundreds of Volts have the failure whereby the ERG valve fails, but GM is no longer making the part and has an indefinite date to produce them. When this part fails the engine light comes on the the vehicle is not allowed to go over 45 MPH, creating a safety issue when on highways (I live rural, all all roads are over >=55 MPH). GM is unwilling to trade the car at fair value for a new one, nor willing to provide loaners. So the car can only sit in the garage with no resolution. GM is aware of the issue, nut is unwilling to address.
#11618964 |
Just purchased and not a week in it dies after I have charged it. I was in drive, at a red light when all of a sudden the car dies. No warning whatsoever. Was not able to turn it on afterwards. Had to get towed to my local Chevrolet dealership that has not been able to fix it for the last month with no ETA on a fix.

On July 21st, 2024, the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve failed. It blows the “Non Walk Home” F03 fuse, resulting in the check engine light and a “Propulsion Power is Reduced” warning message. The vehicle is not to be driven in this condition. The EGR valve is included in the Emission Warranty Parts List and the PZEV Emission Control System Defect Warranty (15yr/150,000mi) is active on the vehicle. The vehicle has been to two Chevrolet service centers, Mission Bay Chevrolet on July 22nd and Kearny Mesa Chevrolet on August 6th without successful repair. They explain that the EGR valve part is on backorder and have no estimate for its availability. The vehicle has been at the Kearny Mesa Chevrolet service department for 55 days. Having the vehicle suddenly and unexpectedly enter a diminished propulsion mode at freeway speeds is unsafe.
#11616888 |
As I understand it, the EGR valve failed causing the car to shut down suddenly on the highway. Apparently by blowing the "walk home" fuse. The EGR valve has been unavailable from GM worldwide since Oct 2023 and there is no estimate when it will, if ever, be available.
#11616085 |
Reduced propulsion message appears on the dash and car lost propulsion on the highway. The EGR blew a fuse and the car enters the walk home mode. This problem should be covered under warranty but my dealership says it is not covered. This issue causes the car not to be able to drive. Chevy is back ordered for the part and there is no estimate of when the part will be available. They apparently do not make the part anymore and there is no fix. Th EGR seems to have bad soldering and blows the fuse #3.

While driving on high-speed devided highways including stretches where traffic was 2-way (single lanes separated by concrete barrier during road maintenance) Chevy Volt indicated "reduced propulsion", and in 2 cases forced shut-down of electric and gas engine where the single-lane travel had cement barriers on both sides of the driving lane.In at least one case, the engine forced 30-40 mph travel until a break in the right-hand cement barrier was interrupted and I could get off the highway. In another case, the engine and fuel propulsion shut down but there was a breakdown lane on the right allowing traffic flow but exposing me to risk due to how close 65 mph traffic was passiing me. In each failure case, after turning off and re-starting the vehicle, the vehicle seemed to have re-set propulsion control and I could continue the trip at normal speed until another warning but not complete faillure...

WHILE DRIVING, A WARNING CHIME SOUNDED AND A MESSAGE APPEARED SAYING "PROPULSION POWER REDUCED." THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ALSO APPEARED. THE CAR LOST POWER, WOULD ACCELERATE ONLY VERY SLOWLY, AND EVENTUALLY DIED ALONG A BUSY ROAD. AFTER A PERIOD, I WAS ABLE TO RESTART CAR AND DRIVE VERY SLOWLY TO DEALER. I WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS A FAULTY EGR VALVE, WHICH WAS BLOWING A FUSE AND WOULD DO SO AGAIN. DEALER WAS UNABLE TO FIND A REPLACEMENT VALVE ANYWHERE IN THE NATION. GM APPARENTLY IS NOT MANUFACTURING REPLACEMENTS FOR THIS COMPONENTS, AND FROM REPORTS FOUND ONLIINE, PLENTY OF OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. THE TEMPORARY FIX IS TO DISCONNECT THE EGR VALVE, WHICH RESULTS IN INCREASED VEHICLE EMISSIONS. I WILL BE UNABLE TO PASS MY NEXT EMISSIONS TEST NEXT YEAR. THE SAFETY ISSUE IS THAT THE VEHICLE CAN QUIT RUNNING WITHOUT WARNING IN ANY SITUATION.
#11615126 |
Reduced propulsion power and check engine light. EGR valve failure per mechanic. Part has been on a global back order for 1.5 years. The car will not pass emissions testing and can blow a fuse that will make the car inoperable. The part is also costly at 2400.00 without labor costs. My car has 83,000 miles, is well-maintained and only 7 years old and now I can’t drive it or sell it.
#11614669 |
I was driving on the interstate when my check engine light came on and the car told me it was going into reduced power mode. I then had to limp my car along on the interstate till I could get off the road, many close calls going 45-50 mph on a 70 mph road.
#11614569 |
Experienced severe engine failure while driving on the freeway, which cost to be in operable due to failure of EGR valve. This is a warranty repair however GM has part on backorder for over a year with no plan to fix. My car is now disabled and I have no other transportation.

Received the vehicle on 8/6/24 with 96,500 miles on it. On 8/15/25 I received a check engine light with error code P0401 indicating an issue with the EGR Valve. I took the vehicle to my dealership which confirmed the issue and was informed that it was a common failure with this type of vehicle. I was placed on a waitlist for the part which as of today, 9/9/24, still is not available. A quick Google search shows that that this error is extremely common for these vehicles.

Component or System Malfunction: The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve in my Chevy Volt failed, causing a complete loss of vehicle power and potentially leading to engine overheating. This malfunction has been widely reported among other Chevy Volt owners, and the EGR valve has been improperly designed. The part is not available for replacement, making it impossible to fix the issue, even though Chevy lists the cost at $3,000 to $4,000. See [XXX] as a sampling of people experiencing the problem. Safety Risks: The failure of the EGR valve puts both my safety and the safety of others at serious risk, as the sudden loss of power could result in accidents, especially when driving at higher speeds or in heavy traffic. Additionally, the potential for engine overheating increases the risk of further damage or even fire. Problem Confirmation: This problem has been reproduced and confirmed by my local dealer, who...

I was driving on a highway around 70 mph on cruise control, without warning a “propulsion power reduced” message came up with the check engine light turning on and the car stopped accelerating/let off of cruise control. Very dangerous when driving at speeds above 70mph. I took the Car to Chevy and they said it’s a EGR valve issue and that it would cost roughly $3,800 and the part is on massive back order. r Reading online, there’s many Volt drivers with the same issue and can’t get the part for months on (with some being offered a repurchase of the car from GM so the problem would go away) it seems like Chevy and or GM do not have sufficient parts to fix the massive amount of Volts having this specific problem and on top of that, this is the largest quote I’ve seen for this repair.

Purchased the '17 Chevy Volt for my Daughter on [XXX] with 58,867 miles. On [XXX], 60,600 miles; She was driving on the interstate when the engine temperature spiked, followed by a check engine light and a warning message: "Engine unavailable." The vehicle suddenly lost power when she reduced pressure on the accelerator, causing a rapid reduction in speed. nearly causing her to lose control. The vehicle's OBD Codes were scanned at a nearby auto parts store resulting in 30 DTC appearing. I found hundreds of complaints and posts about the F3UA fuse blown and a faulty EGR valve. A service bulletin for this issue was published by GM in Feb 2023. I notified the dealership of the issues and the vehicle was brought to Deacon Jones Chevy of Clinton, NC on July 16th. The service department informed me that the 12V Battery was bad and needed replacement to "correct" the...
