TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH THE VEHICLE LOST POWER AND DECREASED SPEED TO 10 MPH. HE WAS ABLE TO AVOID A CRASH AND DRIVE ONTO THE EMERGENCY LANE. HE WAS ALSO ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO HIS RESIDENCE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE IGNITION COIL CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO LOSE POWER. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THERE WERE NO RELATED RECALLS. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 52,000. UPDATED 03/01/10 *BF THE CONSUMERS DAUGHTER HIT THE FRONT SEAT AND SUSTAINED A BLODDY NOSE. UPDATED 09/16/10
IGNITION COIL!!! WAS ENTERING INTERSTATE AND ACCELERATED AND ENGINE LOST A LOT OF POWER AND STARTED RUNNING ROUGHLY. WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE ONLY A FEW MILES AWAY FROM A VW DEALERSHIP (NOT MY OWN, WE WERE OUT OF TOWN). THEY SAID #1 COIL FAILED, BE CAREFUL BECAUSE THE REST WILL PROBABLY FOLLOW SHORTLY, BUT RECOMMENDED I WAIT FOR ANOTHER ONE TO FAIL AND THEN REPLACE THE REST. $230 AND 16 DAYS LATER, ANOTHER FAILED. WAS NOT ACCELERATING HARD, JUST NORMAL HWY DRIVING. STARTED DOING SOME RESEARCH, FOUND OUT THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM AND HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR 5 YRS!!! WILL COMPLAIN TO HIGH HEAVEN TO GET THESE REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. FAILURE OF IGNITION COIL PACK AS DESCRIBED IN NHTSA ACTION NUMBER DP05004. COIL PACK FAILURE WAS DIAGNOSED BY DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT (WHERE WE HAD THE CAR TOWED AFTER IT DIED ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY). THE DEALERSHIP INTENDS TO BILL ME ABOUT $700 TO REPLACE THE COIL PACK. WHEN I MENTIONED THE CUSTOMER SATISFACTION CAMPAIGN CITED IN THE ACTION SUMMARY ON YOUR WEBSITE, BOTH THE DEALERSHIP AND THE VW CUSTOMER CARE CENTER SAID THEY HAD NO INFORMATION ABOUT IT AND WOULD NOT HONOR IT. *NM
WHILE DRIVING IN THE AFTERNOON, MY VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOST POWER AND ACCELERATION CAPABILITY WITH THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT COMING ON AND BLINKING. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER IMMEDIATELY. I AM INFORMED MY 2002 VW JETTA 1.8T HAS "3 FAULTY COILS." THE FAILURE WAS SUDDEN AND WITHOUT WARNING. I MAINTAIN MY CAR ACCORDING TO VW SPECS. IN 02/2003 VW ACKNOWLEDGED A PROBLEM WITH THIS IN OVER 530,000 2001 TO EARLY 2003 VEHICLES. I FEEL THE FAILURE WAS PREMATURE (AS TO WHAT COULD BE TYPICALLY EXPECTED OF AN ENGINE/VEHICLE FOR RELIABILITY), AND A DANGER. OBVIOUSLY THE FACT THAT IT HAS REMANIFESTED IN SUCH A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME SHOWS THAT IT WAS NOT PROPERLY ADDRESSED WITH THE ORIGINAL FIX ONLY 2 YEARS AGO. PLEASE REFER TO MY PREVIOUS COMPLAINT SUBMITTED 9/17/2005 REGARDING MY '02 VW JETTA. THE CRASH WAS A RESULT OF SUDDEN ACCELERATION AND EXTENDED BRAKING DISTANCE. THE REASON I AM WRITING AGAIN IS TO ADDRESS THE FACT THAT MY LOCAL NEWS (DENVER CHANNEL 7 NEWS) DID AN UNDERCOVER FEATURE IN REGARDS TO THE VOLVO'S SUDDEN ACCELERATION AND DECELERATION. THE MECHANIC USED IN THE PIECE DETERMINED THE PROBLEM WAS THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE. THUS, VOLVO IS ANNOUNCING A MAJOR RECALL ON ALL 1999-2002 VOLVO'S. CONSUMER VEHICLE STALLED ON TWO DIFFERENT OCCASIONS CAUSING CONSUMER TO REPLACE COIL. *TS THE VEHICLE HAD ERRATIC ACCELERATION LIGHT PRESSURE ON THE GAS PEDAL. THE ENGINE DID NOT RESPOND IN AN EVEN PATTERN, INSTEAD IT WOULD SUDDENLY SPEED UP DANGEROUSLY. *JB
I BOUGHT A USED 2002 JETTA AND AS SOON AS I DROVE IT OFF THE LOT IT BEGAN WITH THE BUCKING. IT TOOK 3 VISITS TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, 2 DIFFERENT SERVICE SITES, AND 3 WEEKS WITHOUT A VEHICLE TO FIND THE PROBLEM. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT IS REPLACING THE COIL, HOWEVER STATED THEY WERE GOING TO CHARGE ME. I AM CURRENTLY DISPUTING THE CHARGE. I FEEL UNSAFE AND UNHAPPY WITH MY PURCHASE.

ON THE PREVIOUS TWO FAILURES, VW WOULD NOT REPLACE ALL FOUR COILS, BUT ONLY THOSE COILS THAT WERE THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. AS A RESULT WORK TIME HAS BEEN LOST, AND IT HAS BEEN A GREAT INCONVENIENCE TO TAKE TIME OFF OF WORK, HAVE THE CAR TOWED, AND TRAVEL TO THE REPAIR FACILITY. I WANT TO KNOW WHY NHTSA HAS DONE NOTHING ABOUT THE VW IGNITION COIL FAILURES. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE --THE CAR CAN DIE AT ANY MOMENT, AT ANY SPEED, UNDER ANY CONDITIONS-- BUT APPARENTLY THE AGENCY DOES NOT CARE. IGNITION COILS ON THE VW JETTA HAVE FAILED TWICE. THE COMPUTER MODULE ON THE CAR HAS ALSO BEEN REPROGRAMMED IN AN ATTEMPT TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. WHEN THE IGNITION COILS FAIL, THE CAR IS UNSAFE AND NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE. IGNITION COIL FAILURE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS COULD BE INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS. IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS MY 2002 JETTA 1.8T HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP 3 TIMES FOR FAULTY COIL PACKS AND NOW I NEED ALL NEW FUEL INJECTORS. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED. ON A VERY COLD NIGHT, I PULLED OUT OF A PARKING LOT AS NORMAL WHEN THE CAR LOSS ACCELERATION AND THE ENGINE LIGHT STARTED FLASHING. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO VW DEALER FOR REPAIRS. VW SERVICED THE CAR UNDER WARRANTY AND REPLACED THE FAULTY IGNITION COIL. WHILE DRIVING 2 IGNITION COILS FAILED ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO STALL. THE FIRST FAILURE WAS ON 11/30/02 AT 9500 MILES AND THE SECOND FAILURE WAS ON 01/18/03 AT 11000 MILES. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THAT THEY WILL ONLY REPLACE DEFECTIVE COILS WHEN THEY FAIL. *NLM

HOW CAN A CAR MANUFACTURER ALLOW SOMEONE TO DRIVE AROUND IN A UNSAFE VEHICLE ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU OR THE DEALER CAN NOT PREDICT WHEN THIS WILL HAPPEN NEXT? HELLO. MY COMPLAINT IS ABOUT THE 2002 JETTA 1.8T. I PURCHASED MINE IN MAY 2002 FROM CURRAN VW IN STRATFORD, CT. WITH JUST 400 MILES ON THE CAR, AN IGNITION COIL MALFUNCTIONED, AND THE SHIFTING PERFORMANCE WAS VERY POOR. IN NOVEMBER, THE SECOND IGNITION COIL MALFUNCTIONED. I WAS PLACED IN A RENTAL FOR ABOUT 10 DAYS. MADE THE TRIP BACK TO MA TO PICK UP THE CAR, GOT BACK TO CT JUST TO HAVE THE THIRD IGNITION COIL MALFUNCTION, LESS THAN ONE WEEK LATER. THEN, TWO WEEKS AGO THE CAR BEGAN, ONCE AGAIN, TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AND LOSE POWER ON I-95 AT 6:30AM ON MY WAY TO WORK. I WAS FORCED TO TAKE THE CAR DOWN TO 20MPH. I DROPPED THE CAR OFF AT VW FOR INSPECTION AND WAS TOLD IT WAS FINE AND THAT IT WAS NOT THE IGNITION COIL, BUT THAT THEY RESET THE COMPUTER FOR MY PEACE...
I HAD MY FIRST IGNITION COIL PACK FAIL A FEW DAYS AGO. THE DEALER WAS GREAT AND VERY PREPARED TO HANDLE THIS PROBLEM THE BEST THEY COULD, HOWEVER VW CANNOT MAKE THE PARTS FAST ENOUGH TO SATISFY THE DEMAND AND I WILL HAVE A LOANER CAR FOR AT LEAST 3 WEEKS. I KNOW THAT VW WILL ONLY REPLACE THE COIL THAT FAILED SO I GUESS I CAN LOOK FORWARD TO THIS HAPPENING SEVERAL TIMES IN THE FUTURE. GREAT. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO HAVE A CAR THAT IS ONLY ONE YEAR OLD TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY VOLKSWAGEN WOULDN'T DO A VOLUNTARY RECALL ON THESE AS THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE WIDESPREAD. I AM HAPPY WITH THE SERVICE I RECEIVED (COLONICAL VOLKSWAGEN, WESTOBOROUGH MA) BUT DISAPPOINTED IN THE MANUFACTUER FOR NOT STEPPING UP TO THE PLATE AND NOTIFYING OWNERS BEFORE THEIR CAR LEAVES THEM STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD.

THIS WAS THE 2ND FAILURE OF ONE OR MORE IGNITION COILS ON MY 2002 JETTA 1.8T CAUSING A DRAMATIC LOSS OF POWER. THE FIRST TIME WAS NOVEMBER WHEN 2 COILS FAILED CAUSING CAR TO BE ALMOST UNDRIVABLE, NO ACCELARATION AND VERY HARD TO MAINTAIN SPEED. SECOND FAILURE, LUCKILY, ONLY HAPPENED A COUPLE OF BLOCKS FROM THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP. SAME PROBLEM WITH NO POWER, ETC. IF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY IT COULD LEAD TO A RATHER BAD ACCIDENT. THIS PROBEM SEEMS VERY PREVELANT ON THE 2001 AND 2002 VW AND AUDI MODELS WITH THE 1.8 TURBO ENGINE.

THE COILS IN THE 2002 VW JETTA 1.8T ENGINE ARE FAILING. WHEN THEY FAIL, THIS CREATES A SAFTEY ISSUSE WITH THE CAR STALLING. THIS HAPPENS UNEXPECTLY WITHOUT WARNING, AND COULD HAPPEN WHILE TRAVELING IN A HIGH SPEED LANE. OVER A HALF MILLION CARS ARE AFFECTED BY THIS POORLY DESIGNED PART. AN INDEPTH REPORT APPEARED IN THE BOSTON SUNDAY GLOBE AUTOMOTIVE SECTION (1-26-03) DESCRIBING THE PROBLEM WE HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING. VW CHOSES ONLY TO FIX FAILED COMPONENTS, NOT THE ONES THAT HAVE NOT FAILED. THERE ARE FOUR COILS ON THIS ENGINE, AND THE CONSUMER HAS FOUR CHANCES OF BEING IN A ACCIDENT WHEN THE PART FAILS. VW SHOULD REPLACE ALL FOUR PARTS OF THIS KNOWN PROBLEM, AND NOT WAIT FOR THE ACCIDENTS TO HAPPEN.

IGNITION-COIL PROBLEM
VW JETTA 1.8T ABRUPT ENGINE FAILURE STOPPING CAR DEAD IN HEAVY FREEWAY TRAFFIC. WAS TOLD IT WAS KNOWN IGNITION DEFECT FIXED ONE OF FOUR DEFECTIVE "COILS". VWOA WOULD NOT REPLACE OTHER THREE AND SAID THAY WOULD PROBABLY FAIL ALSO BUT IT IS NOT THEIR PROBLEM UNTIL IT FAILS. EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! THIS SEEMS TO BE WIDESPREAD THROUGHOUT AUDI ANDVW.
WHILE DRIVING ONE OF VEHICLE'S IGNITION COILS FAILED CAUSING CAR TO STALL. THE DEALER ADVISED CONSUMER 1 MORE COIL OUT OF THE FOUR IS BADLY DAMAGED AND WILL SOON FAIL. DEALER WILL NOT REPLACE UNTIL COIL FAILS. TS

COIL PACK FAILURE - THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WITH NEWER VW AND AUDI MODELS WITH THE 1.8T ENGINES. WHILE VW SAYS IT'S NOT A SAFETY ISSUE - WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU'RE ON A HIGHWAY AT 70MPH WITH A TRUCK RIGHT BEHIND YOU AND YOU SUDDENLY STALL OR LOSE POWER? WHAT ABOUT TURNING IN FRONT OF TRAFFIC AND LOSING POWER OR STALLING?
COIL FAILURE IN 1.8T ENGINE. I HAVE A '02 JETTA 1.8T. ONE OF THE FOUR IGNITION COILS DIED WHILE DRIVING. RESULT WAS COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER AND SUDDEN STOP WITHOUT BENEFIT OF BRAKE LIGHTS. THE CAR IS THEN UNDRIVABLE AND NEEDS TO BE TOWED TO A DEALER. THIS IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE AS HAD I BEEN MERGING INTO TRAFFIC OR HAD SOMEONE BEEN BEHIND ME, THIS WOULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. VW ACKNOWLEDGES THAT THERE WAS A FAULTY DESIGN AND HAS SINCE REDESIGNED THE PART. THEY ALSO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT AT SOME POINT EVERY COIL WILL FAIL IN A SIMMILAR MANNER. THEY, HOWEVER, REFUSE TO REPLACE THE OTHER THREE PRE-REVISION COILS WITH THE NEW PART UNTIL EACH OF THEM FAILS ON ITS OWN. THEY FURTHER REFUSE TO EVEN SELL THE PART (AS IT IS EASILY FIXED AND WOULD KEEP SOMEONE FROM BECOMING STRANDED IF THEY HAD A SPARE.) THIS IS...
WHILE DRIVING "CHECK ENGINE" STARTED FLASHING, AND THERE WAS A ODOR COMING FROM THE AIR VENTS. THE DEALERSHIP INDICATED AFTER THAT THE NUMBER 2 IGNITION COIL HAD BURNT OUT. A MONTH LATER THE NUMBER 1 IGNITION COIL HAD BURNT OUT. REPLACED PART ON BOTH OCCASIONS. PH

IGNITION COILS OF A 2002 VW JETTA 1.8T "BURNED OUT" ACCORDING TO THE DEALER. HE INFORMED ME THIS IS A KNOWN AND WIDESPREAD ISSUE. THIS CAUSES THE CAR TO BEHAVE IRRATICALLY, CAUSING MY VEHICLE TO LUNGE FORWARD WHILE IDLING AT A RED LIGHT, AND VIBRATE VIOLENTLY WHILE DRIVING AT 20 MPH ON MY RESIDENTIAL STREET. AFTER DOING RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET TALKIGN TO THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER WHO TOWED THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND INFORMATION FROM THE DEALERSHIP'S MECHANIC, I HAVE FOUND THAT A LARGE NUMBER OF OTHER OWNERS HAVE HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH THIS PART. VW NORTH AMERICA WILL NOT ISSUE A RECALL VOLUNTARILLY, AND THIS COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS OR FATAL DRIVING CONDITION IF THIS HAPPENS WHEN TRAVELLING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND THE CAR BEGINS TO VIOLENTLY SHAKE AND VIBRATE AS IT DID WHEN I WAS DRIVING, AND I FEEL THAT IT WARRANTS FURTHER INVESTIGATION BY...

MY 2002 VW JETTA 1.8T ENGINE STARTED TO RUN ROUGH, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEGAN TO BLINK, AND CAR SMELLED FOUL LIKE BURNING RUBBER AND SULFUR. ENGINE POWER WAS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED. I WAS IN BUSY TRAFFIC, BUT FORTUNATELY, WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER SAFELY. HAD CAR...... TOWED TO VW DEALER. NO SURPRISE- FAULTY IGNITION COIL. ALTHOUGH THIS IS KNOWN TO BE A BAD PART, DEALER STATED THAT VW WOULD NOT REPLACE ALL 4 COILS, JUST THE BAD ONE, BECAUSE THE COMPUTER CODE ONLY INDICATED ONE BAD COIL. DEALER SAID THAT VW DOESN'T HAVE ENOUGH REPLACEMENT PARTS TO REPAIR ALL 4. JUST WAITING FOR THE OTHERS TO FAIL...HOPEFULLY IN A SAFE LOCATION.
TWICE NOW, A SINGLE IGNITION COIL HAS FAILED ON MY 2002 VW JETTA 1.8T THIS RESULTS IN IMMEDIATE FAILURE OF THE CAR TO HAVE SUFFICIENT DRIVING POWER, PREVENTING THE CAR FROM BEING DRIVEN ANY FURTHER. THE COMPANY HAS NOT RECALLED THEM _YET_ HOWEVER THOUSANDS OF US ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. MY BIGGEST COMLIANT IS THAT THEY WILL ONLY FIX ONE COIL AT A TIME, VIRTUALLY GUARANTEEING THAT WE WILL BE STRANDED 2 MORE TIMES IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS.
