2017 RAM 1500 Power Train Problems

I am reporting a persistent safety defect involving loss of intended drivability in my 2017 Ram 1500 with an 8-speed automatic transmission. For the past 3 years, on almost every use of the vehicle, the transmission enters an abnormal operating state where it becomes stuck in a single gear (most often 3rd or 4th) and will not upshift or downshift. When this occurs, the vehicle experiences reduced ability to accelerate and loss of normal drivability. The condition does not resolve while driving and requires me to pull over, shut the vehicle off, and restart it to restore operation. This defect has occurred multiple times at freeway speeds, requiring me to pull over onto the highway shoulder due to loss of vehicle function. The crankshaft tone wheel failed just like the TSB's and recalls. The vehicle would not restart. There are multiple bulletins and recalls along with warranty extensions for this issue but for some reason it does not seem to apply to my truck even thought it falls in the tsb years and details of failure.

I was driving my truck today. I went to turn on cruise control and as I got to the mileage that I wanted, I hit set and then after I hit set about a half mile down the road a truck after wanted to lose power and then allowed bang from the transmission then it did it again bang I turned the cruise control off. I pulled over and I looked it up and it told me do not use the cruise control again and try to get home safely and that’s exactly what I did.

Electrical problems with the power steering. Shifting and RPM’s transmission

The vehicle was then taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed with tone crankshaft failure. Additionally, there were 2 sensors that were damaged due to pressure sensor and battery failure. Front Drive-Shaft Broke in half. It was rusted on the outside.

1.The components that failed were the entire rear dif. It will be available for inspection and I will make certain that my mechanic takes photos. 2. My brakes completely locked up on me TWICE and the vehicle stalled. I was left in the middle of the road on a downward slope and on a curve, a blind spot. I was extremely fortunate that this didn't take place on the interstate and that there wasn't a tractor trailer following behind me!! 3. Vehicle is a 2017 RAM 3.0L ECO-DIESEL. Vehicle's electronic throttle control service light came on. Vehicle was taken to dealership for diagnostic. Safety recall 66A/NHTSA 23V-411 was performed for software. Transmission was diagnosed with a bad Tone Wheel (RAM recall X94-Warranty Extension. Applies to RAM vehicles built on or after June 13, 2014 and on or before March 26, 2018 equipped with a 3.0L Turbo Diesel Engine). My vehicle is the make, type, model, and engine specific vehicle, however; it does not meet the VIN specificity for the X94 extended warranty coverage. I would like to know why.

Rear axle pinion gear broke causing lack of motion could cause me to wreck or get hit

My RAM 1500 Pickup has a NHTSA recall 23V-411 that I never received that is a loss of crank shaft signal and causes engine to stall and loss of power. This happened to my vehicle while I was in the passing lane overtaking another car. It was a very dangerous situation as I had to try and navigate to the shoulder as other cars were now passing me on the right. When I did manage to get to the shoulder of a narrow two lane hi-way, my vehicle would not start. I had to call for a tow truck and wait in a very dangerous location for the tow truck to come for over an hour. I was never notified by RAM of this recall and they are also not covering the cost of the part that was involved with the recall as well. This is a very serious situation...

While driving, the truck started shuttering and as I was able to stop where I was, the D light was flashing and the truck died. It would not start, it would not let me put it in N to be able to try and get off the road.

Engine started making a ticking sound approximately around Oct 15th 2023 Called ram cares because my 2008 chrysler aspen with 180k on the same 5.7 liter engine had the same sound and a private shop replaced. Lifters. Started escalation case number [XXX] on October 25th 2023. 2017 ram went to Larry Miller dealership, Boise, ID on Oct 30, 2023. Eric service manager says technician diagnosis was warped exhaust manifold and loose bolts. This is coming with the 5.7l hemi and they have replaced over 20 this year alone and with miles as low as 30,000 miles. Engine shutoff instantly while traveling at approximately 50MPH on a highway. We were able to coast to the shoulder. There was no warning, the engine just shut off instantly while driving. It would not restart and we could not even shift out of park to move the truck off the highway shoulder. Truck was towed to my home at my expense and is not movable due to this issue.

I’m filing a complaint on the recalls already on my vehicle. Neither one of my recalls have been fixed. I keep getting told parts are not available. When ask for timeline I am ignored by the dealers. They haven't even offered at this point to by my vehicle back or give me a vehicle that works correctly. I need some kinda of solution taken care of ASAP.

I have problems when my truck is shifting from park to reverse. There is a jerk that happens when I put the truck in reverse. Sometimes when I put the truck in reverse a prompt on the dash says the vehicle must be in park and the R on the 8 speed dial blinks. When I’m on flat pavement and I shift from P to R I feel no jerk. The truck shift perfectly when driving. I also noticed when the vehicle had been sitting for a while and when I go from P to D and start driving I get a hard jerk. I took it to the dealer they reset the Transmission and the problem still exist. I was told that I have to replace the transmission.

I was driving on interstate and my vehicle was running fine. Without any warning, my check engine light came on and "Service ETC" flashed. Vehicle went into limp mode and would not go over 10 miles an hour. Had it towed to dealer, a gasket on the EGR was bad, had been leaking oil into my turbo for "quite some time" according to the dodge dealership. My turbo was blown and manifold melted. This is a diesel and I only had 108,000 miles on it. Always have done the maintenance. The cost of the repair was $11,971.62. On Saturday, July 16th, I was passing a vehicle at approximately 65mph on a two lane road with no shoulder when my engine stalled. Fortunately I was on a straight stretch of the road and was able to coast to a safe location to attempt to restart my engine. After I stopped, I attempted numerous times to restart my engine without success. This stall caused me to be on the side of the road with no shoulder partially sticking out into the roadway. My rear axle is at a ram dealership have the complete rear axle replaced. It has 90,000 mi and a few thousand miles ago it started to emit a whining noise that just continued to get louder the more I drove it. I took it in one week ago and after a tech checked it out I was told that the entire rear axle had to be replaced at a cost to me of over $5600. On Sunday March 27, 2022 my daughter and I were in my 2017 Ram 1500 Bighorn 5.7 liter Hemi, driving east bound on a major road leading from my neighborhood. Purchased Truck 2017. Truck is less than 5 years old and engine is now at 66,000 miles. Truck purchased from David Dodge, Glenn Mills Pa. Truck oil changes and 57 point inspection completed with no identifying issues reported. Truck has been serviced by Dodge Dealership with 57 point inspection up to and including 2021. It is a issue for Dodge 5.7 Hemi's. The problem has been a reoccuring issues for Hemi's identified from manufacturing 2009 forward. Dodge Dealership stated warreny ends at 60,000 miles / or 5 years. Dodge Dealers never identified the manifold bolts breakage issue. On 7/16/2021 I was driving my truck when with no warning at all it completely shut off and would not restart and would not let me take the key out. I had to call for a tow truck to pull me out of the drive thru I was stuck at and my truck is currently at my mechanics shop. WE HAVE A RECALL FROM LAST YEAR THAT THEY SAY THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHEN OR IF IT WILL OR CAN BE FIXED ON OUR 2017 RAM 1500 ECO DIESEL DUE TO THE SAFETY HAZARD (FIRE/EXPLOSION) OF THIS RECALL AND THAT THEY HAVE HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO FIX IT, WE ASKED FOR A LOANER VEHICLE UNTIL OURS COULD BE FIXED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. VIN TOOL CONFIRMS PARTS NOT AVAILABLE.

THIS VEHICLE HAS TERRIBLE PEDAL LAG. WHEN I PRESS THE ACCELERATOR, THERE IS A 2-6 SECOND LAG RESPONSE TO ACCELERATE. WHILE MOVING FORWARD AND PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR, WHEN THE LAG CATCHES UP TO THE ACCELERATOR IT'S LIKE IT KICKS INTO HIGH GEAR (JERKS) AND ADVANCES. TAKING OFF FROM A STOPPED POSITION IS THE WORSE BECAUSE IT'S FRIGHTING - YOU DON'T KNOW HOW LONG THE LAG WILL TAKE TO RECOVER. WHEN IN MOTION AT HIGHWAY SPEED AND ACCELERATING TO PASS SOMEONE, THE LAG DOES THE SAME THING. IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME, UNLESS YOU ACCELERATE VERY SLOWLY, AND KEEP YOUR SPEED SLOW. I'VE DRIVEN THIS TRUCK FOR 13 MONTHS NOW. THE DEALER SAID THE PROBLEM WILL GO AWAY AS YOU DRIVE IT ..WELL, IT HASN'T.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER HAD EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. A DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. VEHICLE BEGAN INTERMITTENTLY "POPPING" OR "JERKING" WHILE DRIVING AND WOULD HAVE GEAR ISSUES SUCH AS APPEARING TO REMAIN IN 1ST GEAR OR WOULD FAIL TO GO INTO REVERSE. THE POPPING INTO A LOWER GEAR WOULD HAPPEN WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS MOVING AND THUS CAUSED AN IMMEDIATE TRAFFIC SLOWDOWN AND POTENTIAL ACCIDENT SITUATION. ALSO, THE VEHICLE WOULD FAIL TO REVERSE AT TIME AND WOULD ONLY REMEDY ITSELF AFTER TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF AND THEN BACK ON. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD INTERMITTENTLY COME ON AND OFF AND ALMOST A YEAR AGO, I WAS ADVISED BY THE DEALER (TALLAHASSEE DODGE) THAT THERE WAS A GEAR RATIO ISSUE. HOWEVER, WHEN I RECEIVED THE VEHICLE I WAS TOLD THAT ANOTHER SENSOR HAD A LEAK AND THERE WAS NO INDICATION OF A TRANSMISSION ISSUE (AT 55K MILES). NOW, THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN HAVING THE SAME INTERMITTENT ISSUES AND I HAVE RETURNED IT TO THE DEALER...

ON NOVEMBER 9, 2019, AT APPROXIMATELY 12:PM, I WAS AT MY AREA'S ATM, SITTING STILL, WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE TRUCK JUST TURNED OFF, WITHOUT WARNING AND I HAD TO GET IT TOWED HOME BY MY AAA SERVICE

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 RAM 1500. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY, IT FAILED TO ACCELERATE IMMEDIATELY WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. TOWBIN DODGE (275 AUTO MALL DR, HENDERSON, NV) WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000.

THE "SERVICE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL" LIGHT AS WELL AS THE "CEL" ILLUMINATE AND THE VEHICLE GOES IN TO LIMP MODE. I HAD THIS ISSUE AT 3100 MILES AND IT LEFT THE VEHICLE INOPERABLE UNTIL A DEALERSHIP PERFORMED A PROGRAMMING FLASH. NOW AT 31100 MILES THE ISSUE HAS HAPPENED AGAIN NEARLY CAUSING ME TO GET T-BONED DUE TO THE LIMP MODE CAUSING A SIGNIFICANT POWER REDUCTION. THE TRUCK HAS BEEN SITTING AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR FOUR DAYS NOW WITHOUT ANY FURTHER COMMUNICATION FROM THEM. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY RAM, MY TRUCK HAS THE ECODIESEL ENGINE. I HAVE FOUND MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THIS SAME ISSUE ACROSS THE FIAT/ CHRYSLER LINEUP.
