2016 KIA SOUL Engine Problems

The contact owns a 2016 Kia Soul. The contact stated that while his wife was driving approximately 70-75 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power. The check engine warning light was illuminated. This was the fourth recurring failure where the dealer had replaced the catalytic converter on three separate occasions. The vehicle was towed a fourth time to the dealer. The dealer did not diagnose the vehicle. The vehicle was then towed to another dealer, Hutchinson Kia of Macon (3931 River Pl Dr, Macon, GA 31210) where it was diagnosed that the catalytic converter had melted and caused the engine to fail, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that the only current recall was for the piston rod and that the vehicle did not meet the recall requirement...

My check engine light was continually going on and off for a month took it t get it check found out it was converter and their a recall for converter . Took to the Kia dealership with check engine light on to have this taken care they did only a reboot of the engine and light was off so I thought the problem was solve bit the very next day the light was back on went again to the check engine light and again they said it was the catalyst converter took it back to dealership and told their was no more recall on my vehicle I told them about the problem and recall they didn't fix and was told it cost me to do diagnostic test and I week to do that I told I can't be with out a car that long so it was nothing they can...

The component that has failed on this vehicle is the catalytic converter. Two weeks before taking the vehicle in, I noticed that the check engine indicator light was on. As of this writing, the vehicle was taken into Car town Kia ( Oct. 6, 2021) for inspection and computer upgrade but vehicle was not fixed to solve the problem. There was a recall for this particular item but the vehicle still was not fixed. High exhaust gas temperatures may damage the catalytic converter, possibly resulting in abnormal engine combustion, damage to the engine's pistons, and possible piston connecting rod failure but yet, the vehicle has not been fixed. I am afraid that this vehicle will probably catch fire while I am driving it while family members are in the vehicle. I believe my safety as well as the general public can/could be jeopardized if the vehicle were to catch fire....

My soul is having same problems as others with catalytic converter and engine. Had to replace throttle body that showed bad code to pass inspection. Turned out to be a needed software update to computer not bad throttle body. I'm out $600. Now getting p0420 code. Car stall out around 9/22/21. Another software update given on 10/2/21. Reset, still getting code. Car is also losing oil with no sign of leak. Possibly causing code. Damage may already be done to engine. Telling me I have to pay for repairs if needed.

Was told by my dealership where I bought the car new. That there have been issues with them burning oil. I checked the oil dip stick and showed no oil and called them and that's what they told me. I was never told or received any kind of notice about this issue

My Kia Soul's engine failed when we were exiting the highway. The car started making awful grinding sounds and went into "limp mode." When I tried to restart the vehicle, the oil lamp and check engine lamp illuminated. The car had shown NO issues the entire day and I had put oil in it earlier that morning because I noticed it was low (I try to check the oil every time I get gas). I had my partner and our dogs in the car with us and had to walk down the highway to the gas station to call somebody since we didn't have service. It was also 110 degrees outside, so the car failing put us in a pretty dangerous situation. Catalytic converter, recall SC176? Have issues with code: p0420, replaced the Catalytic converter once and code appears again with engine light on, Kia dealership says they won't perform recall since car is slightly over 80,000. Also oil is constantly running out, not noticing a leak on the ground so must be burning away?

After having my oil and filter changed at jiffy lube in approximately 3 weeks my oil light came on. Had to add 3 quarts. Have had to add 1 quart every 400 miles since. Never had to add oil before the last change. No signs of leak/burning etc. Making an appointment with Kia dealer to investigate - also having them perform the WCU upgrade related to Kia Product Improvement Campaign dated 8/20/20. I was never notified. I have read a number of complaints and quite a few are related to both oil and knock sensor issues. I will update after visit to Kia Dealer.

My newly permitted driver was driving when after crossing highway my car all of sudden was halted to an almost complete stop. the motor stalled in the middle of the highway, thankfully no oncoming traffic was coming. I took the vehicle to mechanic and they said i could have a recall on catalytic converter, called dealership and they state that my car was not in the recall. However my car did exactly what the recall states. now i'm looking at anywhere from 2000-3000 to fix my car is only 5 years old with 75,000 miles. Three issues: 1) Upon stepping on the gas from a stop, the car often takes 4 or more seconds to actually move. This more than once has gotten me almost hit in the back by the other cars. 2) The car often makes "tractor noises" that are extremely loud and annoying. 3) The mechanic at the shop I took it to said that there's a crazy amount of oil going though the exhaust system. This could result in hat accumulation in the engine and jam it up (at best) or actually lead to a spontaneous fire. I am afraid of getting stranded so I haven't been driving very much. The KIA dealership said that there's nothing they can do. are you kidding me?

On/around August 13, 2021 I went to get an oil change and Safety recall performed for the 1.6L engines to protect it from excessive connecting rod bearing damage at a Kia Dealer. It was performed in the AM drove it pretty much all day. the next morning 8.14.21 in the AM drove it for roughly 1hr parked then decided to move the car out of the sun the car would not start. My husband was exiting the highway when the engine began to sputter and then "explode" into a cloud of smoke from the engine and tail pipe. There was a oil smell. The car was towed to the local Firestone where my husband was told the engine now has a hole in it. Just a few months ago the engine was worked on because one of the cylinders had frozen. Recalls were taken care of prior to our moving to Dallas from San Antonio. If there were more needed, we received no notification despite having service done on this vehicle several times over the past year. My husband could have been on the highway when the engine blew and ended up in a major accident. There were no warning lights to indicate the car had a problem before it blew.

The check engine light is indicating catalytic converter issues. I took it to the mechanic and he is describing the exact problem as found in recall 19V120000. He measured 900-degree exhaust gas temperatures on one side and 500 degrees on the other. The catalytic converter has subsequently been damaged. The Kia dealership is telling me that there is no open recall under the VIN number for my vehicle yet my vehicle is having all the problems as indicated in the aforementioned recall. I'm afraid that this car will catch on fire. What are my options if the dealership refuses to repair this problem as a recall item although my vin number is not listed?

Catalytic converter failed, sending pieces into engine, causing engine to catch fire. Melted some major components while driving. Same thing as last MAJOR recall in which Kia Replaced my engine. so, this was a BRAND new 1 1/2 year old engine. This vehicle is currently at Keifer Kia in Eugene, OR awaiting Kia National to do their fire investigation.

Right around kia announced catalytic converter recall issues with 2016 kia souls my car stopped running it was brought to a kia dealership where the muffler intake manifold was replaced for $3,000 and told it wasn't the catalytic converter despite having 90% of the listed "symptoms " of the recall.. a complaint was put in to you guys. An extended warranty Catalytic Overheating Protection Engine Control Unit logic to prevent overheating of the catalytic converter.was put on. A year later car Stopped again where i was told catalytic converter and even with replacing so much damage had been done most likely to engine since it was burning so much oil that it was a temporary fix. Only way i could sell it was to get it fixed though so another $2800 was spent to replace it. Yet all the issues i have with car are exactly what the recalls state....

The engine light is starting to appear more frequently this started about two years ago and every few months would appear and the oil would be a little low and more recently after oil changes... I had brought the car in late last year to check on the recall of the engine & mentioned concern... I was told everything was fine and this problem started occurring while before I reached 100,000 miles... Bought used Nov2020. June 2021 took for a long road trip. Daily car use is less than 10 miles a day. So a long road trip should be fine. Got regularly scheduled oil change 1 month before trip, according to them no major problems with vehicle to take long drive. Drove over 1200 miles in a weekend, oil light came on, the check engine light immediately after. Stopped at gas station to put oil in allow to cool. Not over heating but wanted to allow to cool. Turned on car, check engine light and oil light still on. Then it went pop and I was stranded. It wouldn’t start.

In 2020 Kia Motors America sent letters about a Product Improvement Campaign. This 'campaign" was intended to update software for a Knock Sensor System (KSDS) that detects vibrations indicating the onset of excessive connecting rod bearing wear in the engine. Per letter "The KSDS is designed to alert the vehicle driver AT AN EARLY stage of bearing wear BEFORE the occurrence of severe engine damage including engine failure". I never received this letter. I never knew that there was a severe issue with my car, my check engine lights never came on. I took my car in to Car Pros Kia in Huntington Beach a couple months ago for a transmission fluid change and they never told me anything was wrong or that this Product Improvement Campaign was available. Engine started knocking and stalled on the highway going 70mph, almost caused a major accident. Had it towed to local KIA Dealership. Although I was the second owner, and the car was over 5 years old and had 71,000 miles, KIA replaced the engine under warranty. Metallic debris was found in engine, probably causing failure.

I WAS DRIVING AT 40MPH AND IT STALLED. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND REALIZED THERE WAS NO OIL IN IT.I WALKED TWO MILES TO WALMART FOR OIL. NONE OF IT LEAKED OUT. I RECENTLY HAD AN OIL CHANGE. A FEW MONTHS AGO CAR INTERMITTENTLY STARTED BUCKING AS IF WATERY FUEL OR FUEL DEPLETION WAS OCCURRING ACCOMPANIED WITH A LOUD SOUND AS OF GRINDING METAL. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON INTERMITTENTLY FOR A SHORT WHILE AND THEN GO OFF AGAIN. BRAKING AND SLOWING WOULD TEMPORARILY STOP IT UNTIL IT RECURRED. WITH TIME THOSE EPISODES GREW MORE FREQUENT. I CONSULTED MARTIN KIA OF BOWLING GREEN, KY FROM WHOM I BOUGHT THE CAR WHOSE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SEEMED TO OFFER NO SUGGESTION AS TO THE DEFECT. TWO AUTOZONE STORES TESTED THE ENGINE, ONE WITH WITH CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OFF AND ANOTHER WITH IT ON, AND BOTH TESTS AGREED THAT THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WAS MALFUNCTIONING. TESTS AT THE ABOVE KIA DEALER CONFIRMED THAT FINDING AND REPLACED THE CONVERTER AT A TOTAL COST OF ALMOST $1300.00 SAYING ITS 98000 MILES WAS OUT OF EMISSIONS WARRANTY. PROBLEM IS, THE INTERMITTENT BUCKING AND GRINDING PERSISTS....

MUCH LIKE OTHERS ON HERE, WAS DRIVING NORMALLY WHEN WITHIN MOMENTS, THE CAR BEGAN TO MAKE A NOISE IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY SMOKE. THIS CAR HAS HAD REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND IS JUST OVER 100K MILES. THESE ENGINES ARE OBVIOUSLY SUFFERING FROM THE SAME PROBLEM AS THE 1.6 LITER. KIA NEEDS TO RECALL THESE IMMEDIATELY.

ENGINE IS COMSUMING TOO MUCH OIL TOO FAST. HAD OIL CHANGED RECENTLY AND BEFORE IT WAS TIME TO GET IT CHANGED AGAIN THE OIL LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD CAME ON. TOOK CAR TO PLACE TO WHERE THEY CHANGED THE OIL LAST TIME AND THEY CHECKED THE OIL AND SAID THE LEVEL WASN'T EVEN HIGH ENOUGH TO TOUCH THE DIPSTICK. CAR IS NOT DRIVEN THAT MUCH NOR IS IT LEAKING OIL. TECH SAID TO SEE IF THERE IS A RECAL FOR THIS AS HE REMEMBERS THERE MAYBE BEING ONE.

I HAVE NOTICED WHERE THERE WERE RECALLS FOR 2016 KIA SOUL. MY CAR HAS ALOT OF THESE PROBLEMS BUT I HAVE NOT RECEIVED INFORMATION ABOUT A RECALL. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF MY CAR IS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THANK YOU.

BLOWN ENGINE AFTER SOME WORK WAS DONE UNDER CURRENT RECALL (CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT)

SEEMS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND OFF AND WHEN TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY CANT FIND NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAN STAY ON FOR DAYS AND THE ENGINE RUNS RUFF. WHEN THIS IS TOLD AT THE DEALERSHIP THEY SAY THEY CANT FIND ANYTHING. THIS LIGHT IS ON WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING WEATHER ITS SITTING STILL OR DRIVING.

KIA AND DEALER AWARE OF THIS VEHICLE CONSUMING EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL WHICH COULD CATASTROPHICALLY CAUSE ENGINE FAILURE WITH A HIGH RISK OF DRIVER/PASSENGER DEATH IF VEHICLE RUNS OUT OF OIL. KIA IS UNWILLING TO REPLACE/REPAIR/FIX THE PROBLEM. THIS LACK OF ACKNOWLEDGEMENT BY BOOTH THE AUTO MANUFACTURER AND THE DEALER IS JUST CAUSE FOR NEGLIGENCE AND MAY RESULT IN DEATH OR FATAL INJURY. THE VEHICLE IS AT 65,000 MILES AND HAS HAD TWO OIL CONSUMPTION TESTS PERFORMED BY SPITZER KIA, CLEVELAND, OHIO AT 1000 MILE INTERVALS. THE PROBLEM IS WELL KNOWN TO THE AUTO MANUFACTURER AND THEY WILL NOT INTERVENE WITH REPLACEMENT. ENGINE FIRE COULD CAUSE ACCIDENT, AND OR DEATH TO OCCUPANTS AND OR OTHER VICTIMS IF ENGINE RUNS OUT OF OIL AND CREATES EXCESSIVE HEAT. WARNING LIGHTS DO NOT ILLUMINATE TO WARN DRIVER AND OCCUPANTS OF DANGER. A LAW FIRM SUGGESTS REACHING OUT TO NHTSA TO RESOLVE.

EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. KIA DEALER STATES AFTER PERFORMING TWO OIL CONSUMPTION TESTS BACK TO BACK AT 1000 MILES EACH THAT THE ENGINE NEEDS REPLACED. KIA WILL NOT REPLACE ENGINE AS VEHICLE HAS NOW PASSED THE 60,000 MILE ENGINE WARRANTY. VEHICLE HAS 65,000 MILES. DEARLER STATES THAT I HAVE TO PAY.

MY CAR CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE WHOLE CAR IS DAMAGED. THERE IS NO FRONT THE INTERIOR IS GONE. I HAVE STARTED A CASE WITH KIA. MY VEHICLE WAS GOING UP A HILL ABOUT 30 MINKES AN HOUR WHEN IT STARTED SMOKING. IT WAS PULLED OVER AND THE HOOD WAS POPPED. THE ENGINE WAS ON FIRE. SOON THE WHOLE FRONT AND MIDDLE OF THE CAR WAS ON FIRE. THIS WAS AT 14000 JERICHO STREET AT THE ENTRANCE OF BOWIE STATE UNIVERSITY IN BOWIE MD. POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS WERE CALLED.*DT*JB*DT*DT

WHILE DRIVING ON THE NJ TURNPIKE AT NIGHT TIME, I WENT TO CHANGE FROM THE RIGHT LANE INTO THE MIDDLE LANE AND THE CAR STALLED NOT ABLE TO PICK UP SPEED. AS THE CAR STALLED THERE WAS A FAST MOVING TRUCK WHICH WAS COMING AND THAT WAS ABLE TO SWITCH LANES FORCING ME TO MOVE INTO THE LAST LANE WHICH MADE THE CARS BEHIND ME HAVE TO COME TO A SUDDEN STOP. I THEN HAD TO PUT ON MY HAZARDS AND SLOWLY MOVE BACK OVER TO THE SHOULDER. ONCE COMPLETELY STOPPED I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. AFTER WAITING FOR SOME TIME I STARTED THE CAR AGAIN, BUT NOTHING CHANGED. I REMAINED IN THE RIGHT LANE WITH HAZARDS ON AND DROVE THE CAR NOT BEING ABLE TO GO ABOVE 40 MPH. EVENTUALLY THE CAR GOT BACK TO DRIVING NORMAL RIGHT BEFORE ARRIVING HOME WHICH WAS ABOUT A 40 TO 50 MINUTE...

WHILE SITTING IN TRAFFIC MY CAR BEGAN TO SHAKE AND THEN STALLED AND TURNED OFF. IT WAS ABLE TO RESTART AND THEN LATER WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE IT BEGAN TO STOP ACCELERATING WHEN I PRESSED THE GAS. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO THE SHOULDER FROM THE LEFT LANE AS CAR SLOWED TO A STOP AND THE BREAK PEDAL LOCKED UP. THE CAR WOULD NOT TURN ON ANY MORE. AFTER MECHANIC INSPECTION, THEY REPORTED THAT A PISTON HAD MELTED IN THE ENGINE AND BECAUSE THE OIL HAD DRIED UP, EVEN THOUGH THE CAR HAD ITS LAST OIL CHANGE TWO MONTHS AGO.

I HAD A NEW ENGINE PUT IN APRIL 2020. MY CAR IS NOW DOING THE SAME THING AS BEFORE. MY OIL LIGHT FLASHES WHILE IT IS IDLE OR WHEN PRESSING BREAKS AND STARTS TO MISS OUT.

2016 KIA SOUL /W 2.0 LITER LONG BLOCK ENGINE. APPROXIMATELY 85K MILES AT THE TIME OF ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO SPONTANEOUS OIL LOSS. VEHICLE HAD BEEN WELL MAINTAINED WITH REGULAR OIL CHANGES. DEALERSHIP AND KIA CORPORATE REFUSE TO PROVIDE ANY CONSIDERATION THAT THE FAILURE IS DUE TO MFG. DEFECT DESPITE NUMEROUS REPORTED INCIDENTS OF THIS EXACT FAILURE.

CAR HAS ONLY 34K MILES. HAD IT FOR TWO MONTHS NOW. HASN'T HAD IT'S FIRST OIL CHANGE. HOWEVER, THE OIL LIGHT COMES ON AND BLINKS THEN SHUTS OFF, DOES THIS EVERY TIME I DRIVE OR IN IDLE. I PUT 4 QTS OF OIL IN THE CAR A WEEK AGO. THERE IS NO REASON THE OIL NEEDS TO BE FILLED AGAIN. I'M GOING TO HAVE TO PUT ADDITIONAL 4 QUARTS OF OIL AGAIN. THERE IS NO LEAKS, NO BURNING OR ANYTHING ELSE. I'M WORRIED ABOUT THE ENGINE BLOWING UP OR CATCHING ON FIRE. THERE WAS A RECENT RECALL ON THIS CAR BUT I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I AM NOT BEING TOLD, OR INFORMED. THE ENGINE IS USUALLY QUIET, BUT WHEN THE OIL LIGHT BLINKS, IT'S ALSO ACCOMPANIED BY A KNOCKING SOUND.
